For the past 25 years, her work has focused on building resilience and embracing emotional well-being. She has been a program director at the VA San Diego Healthcare System and an associate clinical professor at The University of California, San Diego School of Medicine. A life-long yoga enthusiast, Rebecca has also been a yoga instructor. She was able to combine the ancient wisdom of yoga and mindfulness with compassionate recovery from addiction in her books. Rebecca has collaborated for over ten years with marriage and family therapist, Julie Kraft. Their first book together, The Mindfulness Workbook for Addiction: A Guide to Coping with the Grief, Stress, and Anger that Trigger Addictive Behaviors is popular with both therapists and recovering clients. Their workbook is used in virtual counseling, group therapy, and addiction recovery centers across the country. The Mindfulness Workbook for Addiction has been translated into Korean, Japanese, Hungarian, and coming soon in Russian! Continuing their writing journey together, Rebecca and Julie created a new book, The Gift of Recovery: 52 Mindful Ways to Live Joyfully Beyond Addiction. The Gift of Recovery is like a pocket coach offering lots of in-the-moment mindfulness skills and adds powerful daily affirmations as clients continue on their personal healing journey. The Mindfulness Workbook for Addiction: A Guide to Coping with the Grief, Stress, and Anger that Trigger Addictive Behaviors (winner of the San Diego Book Award) and The Gift of Recovery 52 Mindful Ways to Live Joyfully Beyond Addiction (Gold Winner of the Living Now Book Award and Silver Winner of the Nautilus Book Award)Memorable Moments: 4: 32 So being mindful means to stay, it's to center yourself in the present moment, which a lot of us can do, if we really focus on it and we learn the skill.5: 43 Mindfulness is a way to slow down the ability to react to craving. So if you have a craving for drugs or alcohol, for example, even during the pandemic, it's been a little bit out of control, of course. We'll talk about that I hope. You know mindfulness just tells you to be in the present moment, slow down, breathe.9: 40 This is an ongoing practice of continually taking the negative thoughts that are agitating you, affecting you negatively and moving them through. Thoughts aren't permanent. Feelings aren't permanent.16:00 In fact, addiction in the justice system is between 50 and 80% of folks who are incarcerated, have a substance abuse problem. So any clinician out there you're going to be dealing with folks who've been in the justice system if you're dealing with addiction. 17: 46 Usually there's softer emotions underneath that are being kind of protected, like feeling sad, hurt some of these softer emotions. Along with bringing it into the room, we also want you to bring patients into the room. My feeling is that stuck emotions really need your attention and they also need to have that kind of, that yin yang of self-compassion and patience.22:20 A lapse is not a relapse. So if someone lapses to a substance I would recommend that they remind themselves that a lapse is a one-time, you know, falling off the wagon kind of thing, where you'd use a drug or alcohol, and then you realize, oh my god, let me get back on the horse. Let me, let me get back on track.21:30 I would just want to convey to folks your listeners that call it a lapse, move into the lapse. If you have a lapse and get, go back to your wellness basket and return to the things that make you feel the strongest.Dear Mind, You Matter is brought to you by NOBU, a new mental health, and wellness app. To download NOBU, visit the app store or Google Play. This podcast is hosted by Allison Walsh  and Dr. Angela Phillips. In this episode of the podcast Joe talks to author Chris Baron about the art of writing. Joe and Chris discuss his latest releases, the importance of instilling a love of reading within our kids, and ultimately why Chris writes. It's a fantastic conversation I know you're going to enjoy, cannot wait for Chris to come back on the show! About Chris Baron Chris Baron is the award winning author of two Middle Grade novels in verse, ALL OF ME, and THE MAGICAL IMPERFECT (2021) from Feiwel & Friends/Macmillan, a contributor to the Young Adult Anthology, EVERY BODY SHINES, (2021) from Bloomsbury, and the author of Under the Broom Tree, (2012) from CityWorks Press as part of Lantern Tree: Four Books of Poems: winner of San Diego Book Award. He is a Professor of English at San Diego City College and the director of the Writing Center. Baron has published numerous poems and articles in magazines and journals around the country, performed on radio programs, and participated in many readings, lectures, and panels. He grew up in New York City, but he completed his MFA in Poetry in 1998 at SDSU. HE lives in San Diego with his family. About "The Magical Imperfect" Etan has stopped speaking since his mother left. His father and grandfather don't know how to help him. His friends have given up on him. When Etan is asked to deliver a grocery order to the outskirts of town, he realizes he's at the home of Malia Agbayani, also known as the Creature. Malia stopped going to school when her acute eczema spread to her face, and the bullying became too much. As the two become friends, other kids tease Etan for knowing the Creature. But he believes he might have a cure for Malia's condition, if only he can convince his family and hers to believe it too. Even if it works, will these two outcasts find where they fit in? About "All Of Me" ALL OF ME is the story of Ari, an overweight boy who loves cryptozoology and role-playing games. He has body-image issues, and he is tired of letting his weight define him. After a move across the country, his parents work selling and promoting his mother's paintings and sculptures. Ari's artist mother needs space to create, and his father is gone for long stretches of time on "sales" trips. Somehow Ari is supposed to prepare for his already late bar mitzvah! Meanwhile, Ari makes new friends: Pick, the gamer, the artsy Jorge, and the troubled Lisa. He is also relentlessly bullied because he's overweight, but he can't tell his parents—they're simply not around enough to listen. After an upsetting incident, Ari's mom suggests he go on a diet, and she gives him a book to help. But the book—and the diet—can't fix everything. As Ari faces the demise of his parents' marriage, he also feels himself changing, both emotionally and physically. Here is a much-needed story about accepting the imperfect in oneself and in life.   To quickly and easily leave a rating/review for this podcast please go to:  https://ratethispodcast.com/dtalkspodcast Thanks to Snuffy for this episode of the podcast! *INTERNATIONAL BOOK AWARD* *AWARD WINNING FINALIST* Based on a lifetime of research into shamanism, visionary states, the evolution of written communication and the roots of storytelling, award-winning author, editor, and shamanic explorer Matthew J. Pallamary takes those with open minds courageous enough to question the illusions that most of us think of as real on an expansive journey that pierces the veil of reality itself. Pallamary's in-depth analysis of human perception, shamanism, visionary states, cognitive neuroscience, plant and animal consciousness, and sacred geometry, as well as the prehistoric roots of our deepest cultural myths not only lay bare the illusory roots of what we have built our failing society on, it provides a detailed map that points the way through the non-sense hall of mirrors that we currently find ourselves trapped in. The Center Of The Universe Is Right Between Your Eyes, But Home Is Where the Heart Is, available on Audible, is Pallamary's thirteenth book, and in it he weaves a convincing tapestry that alternates threads of ancient philosophies and preserved indigenous wisdom with recent discoveries in quantum physics, psychology, and the timeless, persistent archetypes of our subconscious. About the Author Author of over a dozen books, Matthew J. Pallamary is an award winning writer, musician, and sound healer who has been studying shamanism all of his life and incorporates shamanic practices into his daily life as well as into his writing and teaching. His historical novel of first contact between shamans and Jesuits in 18th century South America, titled, Land Without Evil received rave reviews along with a San Diego Book Award. It was also adapted into a stage show, the making of which was the subject of a PBS series that garnered an EMMY nomination. Matt has spent thirty years studying Ayahuasca, its rituals and traditions and its “helper plants”, and has done extended shamanic plant dietas in the Peruvian Amazon for the last twenty years. He has also studied and worked with numerous other visionary and healing plants found worldwide. His memoir Spirit Matters detailing his journeys to Peru, working with shamanic plant medicines took first place in the San Diego Book Awards Spiritual Book Category, and was an Award-Winning Finalist in the autobiography/memoir category of the National Best Book Awards. Spirit Matters is also available as an audio book. His book on writing, Phantastic Fiction: A Shamanic Approach to Story took First Place in the International Book Awards Writing and Editing Category, and his popular Phantastic Fiction Workshop has been a staple of the Santa Barbara Writers Conference and the Southern California Writer’s Conference for over twenty five years. Aside from lecturing at numerous venues throughout the United States and appearing on numerous radio shows, podcasts, and television shows, Matt has spent extended time in the jungles, mountains, and deserts of North, Central, and South America pursuing his studies of shamanism and ancient cultures. #consciousness #perception #universe #thoughts #awareness #shadow #attention --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/voiceoverwork/message

With this gentle, easy-to-use guide, you’ll learn how to navigate relationships, take time for self-care, and build a mindful, sustainable, and joyful recovery. Deciding to get help for addiction is the first step toward recovery. But addiction recovery doesn’t happen all at once—it’s something that must be worked for, every day. Sometimes, it will be easy. When things are going well, you may not be tempted to give in to your cravings. But when life is stressful, you’ll need strategies to help you cope. Written by the authors of The Mindfulness Workbook for Addiction, this on-the-go mindfulness guide offers fifty-two powerful and effective meditations to help you manage the stress, depression, and strong emotions that can get in the way of a full and lasting recovery. You’ll also find skills based in cognitive behavior therapy (CBT), dialectical behavior therapy (DBT), and acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) to help you stay grounded, as well as links to online resources. Deciding to overcome an addiction can feel like leaving a relationship. It’s hard and sometimes lonely—but it is truly an act of courage. This book will help guide you as you continue making courageous steps toward peace, joy, and fulfillment. About the authors: Rebecca E.
