Podcast Overview PEN America's Mission and Background PEN America is a 100-year-old organization focused on defending the freedoms of writers, including academic freedom and freedom of expression. Originally stood for Poets, Essayists, and Novelists but now just "PEN" to be more inclusive of all writers. PEN International has over 140 PEN centers worldwide. PEN America's activities include awards, literary festivals, global writer protection, advocacy against book bans, free speech advocacy, and higher ed advocacy (Freedom to Learn program). PEN America is described as "center-left," maintaining relationships with organizations across the political spectrum. The Threat to Academic Freedom and Free Speech There's a growing movement to constrict the space of ideas available to students on college campuses. The argument often made is that universities lean left, and the solution is to limit existing voices, not to add more conservative perspectives. This trend manifests in attempts to ban courses, curricula, and harass administrators. The "solution to speech is more speech," and increased voices are beneficial. Book Banning and the Underlying Agenda Book banning often involves claims of obscenity but is ultimately an attempt to constrain ideas, not to protect children from inappropriate material. Analysis of banned books reveals they disproportionately feature minoritized identities, including LGBTQ, race, and sexual violence. Those who want to ban these books view them as encouraging those types of identities. PEN believes people need to see themselves reflected in books and that banning them is an attempt to cut off viewpoints for students. "America's Censored Classrooms 2024" Report An annual report tracking legislation that censors colleges and universities. Tracks "educational gag orders" that censor topics/ideas and restrictions on university autonomy (DEI offices, curriculum, accreditation standards, tenure, governance). Focuses on trends in proposed and passed legislation and predictions for the future. Jawboning as a Form of Censorship Jawboning refers to lawmakers threatening or bullying university presidents into actions they want without passing laws. This includes pressuring universities to close DEI offices or eliminate certain programs. It is a stealthy approach as there are no democratic elements, no hearings for public comment, and no laws in place to challenge. It creates a difficult situation for presidents who have limited leverage and no recourse. Congressional hearings on antisemitism have become another form of jawboning intended to intimidate university presidents and make political points. The goal often isn't to address the issue at hand but to exploit them for political gain. Florida as a Case Study in Censorship Florida is cited as "Armageddon for higher education." The state passed the "Stop Woke Act," which is a direct restriction of faculty speech. SB 266 banned DEI and placed significant restrictions on curriculum, causing numerous course eliminations. The University of North Florida removed its interfaith center due to thinking it was a DEI program. The governor replaced the board of New College of Florida with conservative figures who dramatically altered the curriculum and mission. PEN America has opened a permanent office in Florida to respond to these threats. DEI Bans in Higher Education and Their Impacts DEI bans result in the closing of cultural centers, women's centers, and multicultural centers. Staff are often reassigned or laid off in states that pass bans. Iowa has passed the most draconian ban, including a ban on developing any programming "with reference to race." It restricts universities from opining on 16 topics related to race, gender, and identity or any related topics. Universities can't even discuss bias, including the term. Extremist Attacks on Accreditors Project 2025 has a plan to weaponize accreditation, forcing accreditors to remove any reference to DEI. The government is threatening to censor ideas by forcing this change in standards. WASC considered preemptively removing DEI language but backed off after pushback. PEN America is not concerned with DEI standards themselves but with government censorship of those standards. The Impact of Censorship Laws It takes years to reverse censorship laws, even if they are ultimately deemed unconstitutional. Once laws are put into place, universities have to comply until they are challenged. This can lead to the loss of programs, funding, and staff for years. The "Stop Woke Act" was ruled on in four and a half months, which was exceptionally fast. Institutional Neutrality and University Leadership Presidents are scared, and there are laws banning them from commenting on anything. Institutional neutrality is a good principle, but the judgment of what concerns the university's mission must be made internally. The government is inserting its judgment over the judgment of the people who are running the institution. Academic freedom is not possible if the leaders are under the direct ideological thumb of the government. University Presidents' Responses and Strategies: Managing Laws and Defending Ideological Independence Many presidents are doing the wrong thing, unilaterally disarming by preemptively closing DEI programs. It is a strategy that is ineffective when they are dealing with a national campaign, not local lawmakers. Presidents should be prudent about public statements but strategically defend the university's ideological independence. They should embrace cooperation with lawmakers on non-ideological issues (budgets, safety, etc.), but not on controlling ideas. Presidents need to use their limited leverage to protect the independence of the university. Faculty's Role in Protecting Free Speech Universities sometimes fail to share their strategies with faculty and restrict the faculty from expressing viewpoints that could help the institution. Faculty can be more outspoken than institutions, and using the "I'm not speaking for the university" disclaimer can be helpful. Universities should not comment on current events unless they directly affect the institution. Universities should not silence alternative viewpoints. Leaders should avoid inserting themselves in debates where there is no role for them. Free Expression and Institutional Mission Universities must welcome all viewpoints to allow for robust debate. This allows the university to state whether a view aligns with the values of the institution. They must defend the right for all to speak, but they must be able to freely express their own views on the matter. There is no constitutional exception for hate speech, only incitement to violence. Champions of Higher Education PEN America has created the Champions of Higher Education, which is a group of over 300 former college presidents who speak out against these laws and attacks. It is important to protect all kinds of speech on campus, as well as to maintain a safe campus environment. Four Takeaways for University Presidents and Boards "Don't do the censors work for them." "Don't comply in advance." "Promote the values of free expression, no matter what is happening in the country." Train all members of the university community in how free expression works. Final Thoughts Dr. Young's insights highlight the serious and growing threats to academic freedom in the U.S. The interview reveals the complex strategies used by those attempting to censor higher education, the challenges faced by university leaders, and the importance of actively defending free expression. Institutional accreditation is in dire need of change, even though it provides institutions with more external recognition, improves the likelihood of gaining more resources, and boosts the respect of staff and faculty. And with an increasingly high number of professional accrediting bodies now touching and impacting many colleges and universities, now is the time for higher ed leaders to strive to support and understand how accreditation can improve overall to strengthen post-secondary education even more. In the second and final episode of this two-part series, Dr. Drumm McNaughton speaks with Ralph Wolff, the founder and former president of the Quality Assurance Commons for Higher and Postsecondary Education, and former president of WASC, the Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, on several issues. These include ·       What conversations should accreditors have with institutions, ·       Should accreditors focus on licensure, ·       What the Department of Education needs to hold accreditors accountable for, and why, ·       What analyses should accreditors perform and make more transparent, ·       Why accreditation should look at how effectively higher ed prepares graduates for licensed professions, ·       Where public members of commissions can play a more critical role in accreditation processes, and ·       The polarization of higher ed and boards. Podcast Highlights ·       Accreditation should lead conversations on the quality of adaptability, teamwork, the ability to work with new technology, and traversing multiple careers in one's lifetime. In addition, accreditation should pay more attention to licensing certification issues, performance, and employer satisfaction, and ensure students are prepared for more than one job by receiving repeated mentoring, internships, and counseling. ·       Accreditation should evaluate how adjunct faculty are deployed and how they are supported and trained when assessing student learning employability skills. ·       A traditional faculty senate model that is separate from and often antagonistic to the administration can be a barrier to change. The Chamber of Commerce is working on creating an alternative model to get employers to sidestep higher education. ·       Accreditors are not held accountable for internal effectiveness because the Higher Education Act doesn't fully allow the Department of Education to make any substantial judgments on the efficacy of accreditors. However, accreditors are membership organizations, and the membership elects their Commission. Thus, accreditors should be held accountable by their Commission and their members. ·       None of the former regional accreditors have been able to maintain relationships with those associated with K-12 schools following the Department's governance changes. ·       There's a lack of transparency. For example, no compilation or analysis of institutions on probation exists. Higher ed needs more capacity and analysis of accreditors' work so accreditors can learn from one another. ·       Public members of the commissions can play a much more critical role in identifying if accreditation deals effectively enough with essential policy issues such as the $1.7 trillion in student debt, rising costs, the attrition rate, and the inadequate preparation of so-called inadequate preparation for jobs. In addition, public members on all accrediting boards should know what the public demands on accreditation. ·       There likely won't be room for the seven former regional accreditors in 15 or 20 years. Now more than ever, accreditation is essential in higher education. An increasingly high number of professional accrediting bodies touch and impact colleges and universities to the point where accreditors have the potential to lead or even stifle change in higher ed. This is especially true given that accreditation is the gatekeeper for over $150 billion in federal financial aid. In the first of this two-part series, Dr. Drumm McNaughton speaks with Ralph Wolff, the founder and former president of the Quality Assurance Commons for Higher and Postsecondary Education, and former president of WASC, the Accrediting Commission for Senior Colleges and Universities of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges, about how and why accreditors should help higher ed identify what is good enough for them and to improve their transparency of throughput, academic quality, and academic rigor. They also discuss accreditors' stances on DEI, the politicization of critical race theory, and the professionalization of college sports. Podcast Highlights DEI is multi-dimensional, and the political elements of critical race theory are important to discuss, not just to legislate. Accreditors are addressing these issues, but they could be doing even more. Up until recently, the federal rule required that institutions publish an aggregate rate of outcomes after four and six years. Now they are producing programmatic data and grouping disciplines together. Accreditors are beginning to look more at outcomes. Still, they need to push higher ed to be more transparent with specific outcomes, such as the percentage of students who have graduated with particular majors and their salaries one, three, and five years later. The University of Texas System's UT SEEK, Georgia State, the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce, and Third Way are pioneers in publishing the outcomes that students care about. Accreditation needs to get higher ed to take more responsibility for defining what is good enough for them, e.g., grade-point averages, competency-based learning, and retention and completion. During accreditation, outcomes between majors and two- and four-year programs, for example, should be separated. Higher ed needs to address its integrity issue with the special treatment that student-athletes generally receive. His family lived in a small 2-bedroom post-WWII bungalow where his mom and dad raised 3 boys. Phil was the youngest and quite surprised as his mother was in her early 40s when I was born. Three boys in one small bedroom with a coal-burning furnace with no air conditioning. Phil was born 6 weeks prematurely, weighing approximately 4 pounds. His first 6 months were spent in an incubator at the local Brantford General hospital. Phil has dyslexia. It is a neurological disorder he was born with. He failed Grade 3 and Grade 5 and was labeled as a “slow learner”. Phil started working when I was 9 years old pulling copper wire out of factory dumpsters and selling it for 5 cents a pound. By the time Phil was 12, he had a part-time job working in a production factory loading boxcars and working as a caddy at the local golf course. On December 3, 1967, Phil's mother died from cancer. It was two days after Phil's 14th birthday. Phil made a decision that was to change the trajectory of his life. It was a snowy January night around midnight and Phil was taking his dog Duke for a walk. Standing behind a local factory Phil decided to “go for it”. He was going to see what was on the other side of the hill and come back and help his friends that had already given up on life. That decision began the 54-year journey that continues today. Phil became an “A” student throughout the rest of grade school and high school. His dad died in May 1974 as he was completing Grade 13. Four years later he graduated at the top of my class from the De Groote School of Business at McMaster University in Hamilton Ontario, Canada. He also played football and basketball.  Phil spent 5 years studying Electrical Engineering while beginning what turned out to be a 20-year career in the semiconductor industry. By the time his career in that industry had ended, he had become a corporate executive. He was traveling over 60,000 miles per year throughout North America and the Pacific Rim. Phil eventually decided to leave corporate America, breaking away from the herd to lead it in a better direction. A short time later he turned down two Vice Presidential roles so that I could begin the creation of what has become the Master of Business Leadership program. Jon talks with with Dave Johnson, 15 years' general counsel for several Silicon Valley tech cos. Lecturer, Stanford Law School and Hasso Plattner Institute of Design at Stanford (a/k/a the d.school). Teaching Adv. Negotiation/Transactions, and Negotiation by Design. David Johnson has been teaching Negotiation at SLS annually since 2006, in conjunction with his full-time practice of law in Silicon Valley from 1996 to date. In addition, he is a Lecturer in the Hasso Plattner School of Design (a/k/a “the d.school”), where he has recently completed the third instance of his new course, Negotiation by Design. He has testified before the California Assembly on legislation addressing software liability. Thereafter he appeared before Congress, as lead counsel for the Business Software Alliance in hearings before the House Subcommittee for Science and Technology. He currently serves on the California State Bar Executive Committee on Alternative Dispute Resolution, and its subcommittee on Education and Inclusivity. David is a regular speaker at conferences, seminars and panels on various subjects in law, science and technology, as well as negotiation. David brings to his teaching a unique blend of breadth and depth in the practice of law. He began his career in the courtroom, with over 20 civil trials, jury and bench, state and federal. He has briefed and argued a dozen state appellate matters, with 6 opinions issued, including one state Supreme Court argument challenging the prima facie constitutionality of a sales tax on commercial speech. More recently, he was appointed as Special Assistant Attorney General for the State of Washington in order to appear for the State before the Alaska Supreme Court in a case of first impression directly impacting all of Washington's state-owned hospitals. In Silicon Valley, he has litigated scores of patent, copyright, trade secret, trade dress, antitrust, and business cases, and worked on corporate transactional and governance matters. First with Fenwick & West, and thereafter Morgan/Lewis, he represented an array of technology and business clients such as: Apple, Brøderbund, Cisco, Electronic Arts, Go Remote, Homestore.com, Intuit, Juniper, McKesson, Merrill-Lynch, Micron, Rambus, Sankyo Pharma, Sun, Symantec, Tibco, and The Computer History Museum, pro bono. David's first General Counsel role was with Internet pioneer, AllAdvantage, blending online advertising, social media and user-data capture & mining. A Credit Suisse portfolio company pre-IPO, AADV ultimately fell victim to the crash. Thereafter, he took the reins as COO and GC of Palo Alto-based innovation accelerator MG Taylor, negotiating to closing their joint-venture-to-acquisition with Vanderbilt University Medical Center to create the nation's first Healthcare Innovation Center, installed and operating at Vanderbilt's Center for Better Health. Remaining in Silicon Valley, David moved next into biotech, as Deputy General Counsel for Xenogen (NYSE: XGEN), which coupled innovations in genetic engineering and in vivo biophotonics, invented by Chris Contag, Stanford Professor of Microbiology, to create breakthrough improvements in cancer research. David co-managed Xenogen's public-public merger with Caliper Life Sciences (NYSE: CALP), a global microfluidics and lab instrumentation developer. Upon closing, he was brought over as Caliper's Deputy General Counsel. Several years hence, David took another leadership position as a Principal and General Counsel of former client Triage Consulting Group, a privately-held revenue-cycle consultancy for academic, children's and other hospitals nationwide. For the last three years, David has served as General Counsel for a non-profit foundation operating a WASC-accredited STEM graduate university in Silicon Valley. For his JSM degree in Law, Science & Technology, David's interdisciplinary research and writing proposed that both object-modeling technique (OMT) and fuzzy set theories, as proven design schemas in computing, should therefore find applications in law, policy, and decision-making; eliciting from his faculty advisor the observation that he was “one of the most widely-read people I know.” In addition to reading, David is an avid skier and golfer, and a diligent but decidedly average tennis player. This is a conversation with Sex Coach Lex, about his work as a coach, how he helps people get where they want to be, and the foundations needed to get there. Coach Lex is a WASC certified sex coach (WASC stands for World Association of Sex Coaches). He specializes in sexual communication in order to create a world where people can speak about sex as comfortably as they speak about breakfast. His work includes individuals, couples, and the polyamorous community, as well as the LGBTQIA+ and kink communities. Lex facilitates groups, workshops, and works with clients one-on-one worldwide. Today we're talking with WASC and WSCUC President, Jamienne S. Studley. She's worn many hats, from being a civil rights and education lawyer to a senior official in the Obama administration. President Studley describes herself as mission-driven and says the job of education is excellence and humanity, with quality and equity being priorities as well. She says the hardest position she's held was as a college president because it's a singular spot that receives a lot of focus and attention. There's a certain amount of isolation to the presidency, and she values the teamwork that came with working for the Department of Education. The year 2020 was a difficult one, but President Studley has found the silver linings. People are more able to see the needs of students and are rolling up their sleeves to get things done. She's also noticed that people are finding and embracing the need to collaborate. Her leadership in particular has evolved as a result. She's been reminded that people are hungry for clarity. President Studley says she tends to think big and broad, and while people do want the big picture, they also need to know the steps, the specifics. When it comes to the best advice she has received, President Studley says that it is to be very clear about what matters and repeat it over and over again. The advice she most gives to others is usually with regard to picking jobs. She says to choose based on purpose, people, and the part you want to play. Some advice she has trouble taking is to give people room and let them fail. She also admits having a hard time with spending money to staff up the people needed and not worrying so much about the bottom line. President Studley just came back from her first in-person event in over a year, and she was impressed that the event organizers found ways to keep attendees safe. Studley says people came with a lot of ideas, and she was amazed at how much being in-person matters. She usually defines herself as an extrovert but found her inner introvert through her time away. Furthermore, Studley discovered that her balance of people-time and reflection-time has changed a bit. Laura Lorenze is a proud wife and a mother. She has three great kids: Nathan (16) Nicholas (14) and Natalie (9). She was born and raised Mormon and graduated from Brigham Young University. Laura worked for corporate America for ten years but always had a desire to work with high school students. She left a very lucrative career and went back to school at 32. She was the second student admitted to the very new counseling program at Azusa Pacific University. Laura earned her graduate degree in Educational Counseling and earned a credential to be a high school counselor. Laura and her husband opened Valencia Tutors, which today has earned WASC accreditation, NCAA and AP certification and partners with the local school district. They have supported thousands of students in earning high school credits. Their company consists of many different facets: tutoring, high school and college courses for credit, SAT/ACT prep, special education support and college counseling.  Laura felt unprepared and recognized that counselors really didn't have the answers and went back to school and was accepted into UCLA's college admission program. The Western Association of Schools and Colleges provided a letter of formal notification of action summarizing WASC Senior College and University Commission's (WSCUC) Special Visit to Cal Lutheran on Dec. 2-4 2020, and its subsequent meeting on Feb. 19. The letter outlined six issues or action items that the commission is asking the university to address. Nancy Kroonenberg (ASIJ High School Assistant Principal 1996-2013) Educator ​ Before wending my way to ASIJ, I lived in the United States, France, The Netherlands, and Hong Kong. ASIJ was my third international school. Pre-Covid we were inveterate travelers with trips to Machu Picchu, Uzbekistan, Cambodia, South Africa among a few of our favorites. I retired (sort of) from ASIJ in 2013. Within a half year I was working at the American International School of Rotterdam (AISR), first as Interim Secondary Principal, then as Admissions Director. AISR is an IB school rather than the AP Program which I knew at ASIJ so it was a steep learning curb. I retired again (sort of) in 2016. I have since committed myself to volunteer work. I was keen to stay connected with internationals so joined a help desk where we offer info about schools, jobs, healthcare, housing and everything else to international newcomers in Amsterdam. After four decades in schools, it was difficult not being among students. Well, that has been short-lived as well. WASC, the organization which accredits ASIJ, needs volunteers to serve on visiting teams. I have been doing that since 1989. Since being back in Europe I have been on WASC teams in Sweden, Italy, Spain, Israel, South Africa and Qatar. On two teams, my teammate was a friend from ISSH in Tokyo. I love staying connected with people. I’ll never forget the first time I heard someone mention WASP and realized they weren’t talking about those bee-like creatures who sting and are really scary. I was quite young and when the acrostic was explained to me I realized I was still lost. I only understood what one of the four words meant. WHITE ANGLO SAXON PROTESTANT. Ok. I thought I got the WHITE. The other three, forget it. I’m guessing everyone has their own story of how they came to discover the identity of their family, skin color, racial background, national identity, religion, etc., but it isn’t something that comes very intuitively. These are all categories that require some degree of learning and context.As the years went by I learned a bit more. Anglo Saxon in my mind just meant English or British and I didn’t get the difference between those two at all, but at least I had a bucket into which I could put Anglo and Saxon. Protestant? That was a bit harder. We went to a different church building (as if we ever went) than the Catholics did and we could eat meat on Friday and if we had a cross hanging in our home it wouldn’t still have Jesus hanging on it. And our ministers wouldn’t wear those long dresses or black clothes during the week with a white thing called a collar.But so what? What really mattered was discovering what this meant to others. Some seemed very proud of being WASPs, like attainment of sorts, and somehow superior to other categories. And there didn’t seem to be variations of it. Never heard of WASC or WHITE ANGLO SAXON CATHOLICS. OR BASPs. BLACK ANGLO SAXON PROTESTANTS.I could go on, but you get the point. What’s the big deal? For my Grandmother is was a huge deal because she was DAR (more initials) or Daughter of the American Revolution and even an elite one because she was also a DAM, Daughter of the Mayflower. That’s about as close to royal pedigree as one could have as it was explained to me in Elementary School. My blood must be red white and blue.Now I know that WASP was referring to a certain combination of Race, Heritage, and Religion which somehow meant I had hit the jackpot. I was privileged. Over time I came to discover that lots of people didn’t like WASPs and the subtleties and nuances surrounding the issues weren’t going to go away-certainly not anytime soon if you read the same newspapers I do.So today I decided to bring in a special guest. She is more white than me. She is way more English than I am and she’s worked in the City in London and on Wall Street in Manhattan with names that look exactly like the ones on your checking account. Privileged indeed. Born English. Raised in Cambridge. Mother of 3. Miss Julia Kate Nand. Welcome to Church Hurts And.

Right now!” An alleged shareholder, P, sought an immediate injunction to stop a Co declaring a dividend or reducing its share capital: [1] P’s alleged status a shareholder, P said, gave rise to an entitlement to $700K in dividends. Failure to pay those dividends was a breach of the Co’s constitution – which was, P said, a breach of duty and oppressive: [2] In the substantive claim, P was seeking orders requiring the Ds to purchase P’s shares: [3] The Court was satisfied there was a serious question (whether P was indeed a shareholder in the Co) to be tried: [6], [7] However, The Court rejected P’s argument that damages would not be adequate compensation, a necessary step to get an interlocutory injunction. In the substantive claim, P was seeking was a declaration that it owned shares and an order that the Ds buy those shares i.e. P wanted money. Clearly P considered the payment of money to be adequate: [8] The Court characterised the relief as a “freezing order” in essence. Dear DCIS Parents, We have finally reached the end of a very busy and successful term and I am sure all members of the DCIS community are looking forward to a well-earned rest. The highlight of the half term was the visit by the CIS and WASC accreditation teams. As I write we are still waiting for the formal outcome of the process but we had some lovely feedback from the visitors and we eagerly await the formal reports. We are very proud of our achievements at Dover Court and (without getting too far ahead of ourselves!) therefore we are grateful of an external validation of this from two respected accreditation agencies. I will be in contact early next term with the official outcome of the visit and a summary of the commendations and recommendations the team makes. We have had some really interesting visitors to the school including Adrian Hayes, who holds the record for climbing Everest and visiting both poles in 18 months. He will be back next term to speak to more of our year groups. Zoe Griffiths enchanted our Secondary students with the wonders of the power of Maths and we had visitors from Michael Ng and Esther Seah Hui En from The Institute of Southeast Asian Studies (ISEAS) to support our students’ learning in History. We also enjoyed two very powerful visits from NAE Juilliard specialists in Drama and Dance. The UN Day was another wonderful success this year. It was fantastic to see our families representing and sharing information on the 55 countries and territories we have in the school community. I am grateful for the hard work of our UN committee led by Ms Hyland and Ms Gray for their great work pulling this together. One of my many regrets of not being at DCIS next year is seeing how the school continues to develop this lovely exposition of our diverse Dover Court community. Our choir have been involved in two high profile events this half term. The first was singing, with the choirs from the other British Schools in Singapore and southern Malaysia, at the annual Remembrance Service at Kranji. The second was providing the welcome entertainment at the Great British Ball organised by the British Chamber of Commerce and the British Club. We had a number of trips and expeditions this term. A group of intrepid Secondary students took part in the World Scholars Cup, firstly in Manila and then at the Grand Final in Yale, USA. The team came back with an impressive haul of medals. Year 5 started the year group expeditions with a four-day trip to Indonesia and came back with many an exciting tale of their adventures. In sport our first ever NAE games team made up of 19 boys and girls from Years 5 and 6 competed against 9 other NAE SEA schools in Vietnam. A great time was had with some good team performances. The ACSIS season 1 ended in November, with some fantastic results for DCIS. Our U16 boys football team won a bronze medal and our U12 netballers “cleaned up” with gold, silver and bronze medals in their respective divisions. There was also the Middle School Swimming Championships, with many swimmers setting personal records. It was really good to see over 90 runners from Years 3-12 representing DCIS at the ACSIS cross-country championships held at Pasir-Ris. A huge well done to our U14 Boys team who gained a bronze medal out of 19 schools. Within Primary PE it has been superb to see a record number of teams and students competing in a variety of sports in a non-competitive environment, with up to 15 teams playing each week. We have also been really pleased to introduce numerous new teams, including our first ever U11 boys and girls basketball teams, secondary girls contact rugby teams an U16 boys rugby team and several dance groups.

Dear DCIS Parents, Last week we had a very successful visit from the Council of International Schools (CIS) and Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) accreditation teams. The Chair and Co-chair spoke to staff on Friday and gave some lovely feedback on our children and the school. We will receive the full report once it has been ratified by the CIS and WASC boards. This week is STEAM week and the children in Years 4 and 5 have enjoyed taking on the second STEAM challenge of the year, set by MIT, today. The rest of Primary and some classes in Secondary will enjoy their STEAM days during the rest of the week. We are also very excited to have Juilliard dance curriculum specialist Donna Costello visiting us for two days. Donna is running a number of workshops across the year groups, as well as with members from our PE department. We look forward to welcoming parents to tomorrow's dance workshop. There are a few places left if anyone is interested, please sign up using this link. There has been a certain buzz among the Year 5 students today, as they will depart for Telunas on their Residential trip early tomorrow morning. We look forward to them telling us all about their adventures upon their return on Friday. Our counsellor Mr Moody will run two workshops this week. During the Navigating the Exams Rapid parent workshop tomorrow, 26th November, Mr Moody will go through how parents can support their children during the intense mocks and exam periods ahead. This workshop is aimed at parents of children in Upper Secondary and will take place 8.45am in The Lounge. On Thursday, 28th November, 7.30am the second Forum for Dads will run in The Lounge. This time Mr Moody will be leading a talk about Parenting Teenagers. All dads are welcome! The DCA Christmas Fayre is just around the corner. It is usually a lovely event that puts all in the festive spirit. I look forward to seeing you on Saturday, 7th December at 3.00pm. For Episode 5, I sat down with Claudia Weintraub, Executive Director of River Oaks Academy, a TK through 12th grade, independent study, or personalized learning as they like to call it, charter school that has two locations in Westlake Village and Oxnard. This school has concurrent enrollment available at the local junior college so students can be earning college credit while in high school. A very unique thing that River Oaks has is they are dual accredited with WASC and the NCAA. Since they have that NCAA Accreditation they get a lot of student athletes that enroll in their program.   I've been friends and a fan (fran?) of Christelyn Russell-Karazin for a long time. A mom of two, freelance writer and founder of BeyondBlackAndWhite.com, Christelyn has impressed/shocked me with her razor-sharp stance on interracial relationships. A black woman married to a white man, who also had an unplanned baby with a black man, she is adamant that women of color find love, marriage and family men they deserve -- regardless of race.  What sets Christelyn's blog apart from any other voice on race -- aside from the astonishing interaction with readers -- is that in her smart and sharp voice, she admonishes everyone brands, the media, Washington and black men and women alike for their stance on race, relationships and policy. She gets pissed off, takes a stand and says front-and-center what trolls typically post in the comments section. In between posts about beauty products, her garden and love stories about interracial couples, recent topics include criticizing a black woman for suing her boyfriend for messing up her hair in the pool;  being irate that only light-skinned, straight-haired women of color are considered beautiful, and her own on-point take about the recent conviction of a white police officer for raping black women. In this episode Christelyn schools me on the pressures successful black women face to marry within their race -- including from the church -- and shares her own journey from being an unmarried mom with what appeared to be the perfect black man, to meeting and falling in love with a white catholic guy from waspy Westport, Conn. (a "Wasc" she calls him).
