Send us a textWhen I last spoke with Sarah Wells Rolland, The Village Potters in Asheville, North Carolina was 13 years into it's incredible, communal existence. And frankly (at least from my perspective) was a well oiled machine. With a residency program, community classes, a gallery, and 17 kilns it wasn't on my short list wondering “gee, I wonder where they are now?” That is, until Hurricane Helene hit. And absolutely everything changed. Introducing: Where are They Now? Picture a future where octopi run underwater factories and construct amphibious settlements along what used to be Miami's coastline! Maintaining and ensuring the success of a microservice-based system can be challenging. Sarah Wells, a seasoned tech consultant with over 20 years of experience, offers valuable insights in her book "Enabling Microservices Success" and a discussion on The New Stack Makers podcast. Drawing from her tenure at the Financial Times (FT), Wells illustrates how transitioning to microservices and adopting DevOps and SRE practices enabled FT to accelerate software releases from 12 annually to over 20,000. This transformation required merging IT organizations, investing in automation, and fostering team autonomy. Wells emphasizes that successful microservices adoption depends not only on developer expertise but also on organizational structures. She highlights the importance of continuous delivery and proactive communication, especially during critical periods like major news events. Additionally, she discusses the evolving roles of senior engineers and the need for flexibility in defining architectural responsibilities. Wells advocates for "engineering enablement" over "platform teams" to better support effective service management and evolution. My guest today is none other than Sarah Wells. Sarah is an Olympic hurdler and Pan Am Silver Medalist and has learned how to overcome hurdles both literally and figuratively. During her pursuit of the London Olympics, she was sidelined for months just the year before due to injury, but was able to finish as an Olympic semi-finalist and one of the youngest competitors in the field. There is a whole other story about when she pursued her second Olympic games, but we will save that for our conversation today. Outside of competitive sports, she coaches people to pursue their goals through the Believe Initiative, an organization she founded on—fittingly—a message of resilience. Through the Believe Initiative, she has helped over 120,000 students across North America understand the importance of being resilient and the power of believing in themselves. In the corporate world, she has worked with organizations such as Salesforce, Deloitte, Proctor and Gamble, Kraft-Heinz, Bell Media, and RBC on how to build more resilient teams through keynotes and customized workshops. Sarah recognizes not everyone is going to have that, teacher, coach or person in their lives, who believes in them, so the Believe Initiative was created in 2017 to be that person for as many people as possible. Looking to shake up your dinner plans tonight? That chuck roast you have in the fridge doesn't have to automatically mean pot roast. Sarah Wells is a first-generation farmer living in Rio, Wisconsin. During our conversation, she shares her secrets for spicing up dinner and how cooking a traditional chuck roast can serve as the base for several different recipes throughout the week. She also talks about ordering custom meat to fill your freezer – what cuts, the price, and when's the best time to order. Also, how building connections with your local producers at the farmers market can ease a lot of concerns when it comes to all the “buzz words” we find on food labels – like “grass-fed beef” or “organic.” But honestly, what makes this conversation is what her daughter said when it comes to the life cycle of farm animals – she is wise beyond her years answering a question many consumers have (Don't miss it - it's at the 16 min. mark). . . This podcast episode has so much game-changing information for moms who are going back to work, that you'll want to make sure to give it a listen. Sarah Wells was working in DC, trying to juggle pumping with a busy routine that involved commuting, meetings, and even congressional sessions. She searched high and low for the right pumping bag, but couldn't find one that fit what she needed, looked great, and made life for a working mama easier (you know, all the things a pump bag should do). We sat down with Sarah to hear the story of how she created her own gorgeous pump bags that go above and beyond the call of duty, but also to get her real-life advice and wisdom for working moms. Hear her passion for moms, life, and why every employer should be hiring working mamas. What we covered: How to make sure to make time for pumping at work. How and when to speak to your employer about needing to pump after returning from maternity leave. The benefits of seeking out a coworker who has gone before you. What employers can do to improve pumping areas for work. The creation story for Sarah Wells Breast Pump Bags and Sarah's personal experience with pumping. Since that time almost a decade ago, Sarah's business has become an internationally recognized brand in the baby products industry. Sarah is a mom, an entrepreneur, and a women's health advocate. Prior to starting her business, she spent 15 years running national nonprofit organizations committed to achieving quality healthcare for Americans, with a personal passion to improve policies for girls and women.
