Returning to Step Off! Radio, we are joined again by none other than emcee Jag Arreola of Kozmik Force who returns to the show to discuss his latest album ‘Unmasked'. More than five years after the release of his debut solo album 'Maria's Seed', Jag is back with his intimate and personal project yet to date. During our talk on the show we catch up with Jag to talk about the album, his experience as a member of the Justice 8, the challenges of losing his job as a middle school history teacher following his arrest, and making music while fighting the charges that were brought against him. Likewise, we also discuss how the project pushed him to step into new waters concept-wise, behind-the-scenes accounts discussing the album's long recording process, as well as what the future holds for his music in 2025 and beyond. More than twenty-five years ago Brother Ali stepped on the music scene in the early 2000s as a fresh-faced emcee. As a noted community activist and an early member of Atmosphere's Rhymesayers Entertainment hip-hop collective, the acclaimed Minneapolis-based independent record label, Brother Ali quickly gained a reputation as one of hip-hop's most outspoken and profoundly authentic artists for his biting critiques of the U.S. government, white supremacy, and treatment of the working class. Along with his revolutionary politics, Brother Ali's albinism and legal blindness have made him one of the genre's most unique, distinguishable, and enduring emcees. Over the years the Minneapolis-based activist and rapper has a released string of over a dozen critically acclaimed studio albums and mixtapes which have garnered him a reputation for incorporating complex lyricism, honesty, and unapologetic humanity into his music. Much like his other musical contemporaries such as Immortal Technique, an outspoken social justice message is present throughout much of Brother Ali's music. Discussing themes such as racial inequality, slavery, and critiquing the U.S. government has often put him at odds with the greater music industry for the past twenty years. Most recently his vocal support for Palestine and speaking out against genocide in Gaza has affected his career greatly; resulting in him being blackballed by the music industry for over a year. In today's episode, Brother Ali joins Step Off! Radio to discuss his new album 'Satisfied Soul' (with long-time collaborator producer Ant of Atmosphere). As well as his early life growing up with albinism, taking shahadah at 15, the origins of his music career, and his thoughts on a litany of social issues taking place both here in the U.S. domestically and abroad. Have you ever caught yourself speaking critically about someone, convinced you were in the right, only to feel uneasy later? Slander and judgment often feel justified in the moment, but they leave behind a trail of broken relationships, unresolved tension, and a deeper issue that we rarely stop to examine. Welcome to the Daily Devo. Our text today is James 4:11-12: Do not speak evil against one another, brothers. The one who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks evil against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge. There is only one lawgiver and judge, he who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor? — James 4:11-12 So, this text is worth a short inductive study. I like to do this occasionally so you can see how we study the text. First, lets make some observations in this text: OBSERVATIONS Keywords: "Katalaleō" (speak evil) appears three times, emphasizing the severity of slander. "Judge" conveys both condemnation and the assumption of divine authority. "Brother" stresses the familial bond of believers. "Law," "lawgiver," and "judge" highlight the legal and divine authority. "Save" and "destroy" remind readers of God's ultimate sovereignty over eternal destinies. Characters: "Brothers": Fellow Christians within the community. "Lawgiver and Judge": God alone, the one with authority over the law and human souls. "Neighbor": Broadens the scope to include all people, not just believers. Grammar: Subjects: "The one who speaks evil" or "judges." Verbs: "Speaks," "judges," "slanders," and is "not a doer." Objects: The "law," the "brother," and "God's authority." Contrast: "Speaking against others" vs. "doing the law." "Humans who judge" vs. God, the "true Judge." Structure: James moves from a command ("Do not speak evil") to explaining slander's more serious implications. The logical flow: Speaking evil → judging the brother → judging the law → usurping God's authority. Genre: A mix of moral exhortation and theological correction INTERPRETATION Who: James addresses believers struggling with internal conflict and self-deception, often marked by slander, rivalry, and judgmental attitudes. What: Slander is not just a relational offense; it is an act of arrogance that defies God's law of love and usurps His role as Judge. Judging others reveals a presumptive heart—claiming divine authority over matters of eternal significance. Where/When: Likely written to dispersed Jewish Christians in the early church, a time of persecution and internal tensions that led to interpersonal conflicts. How: James uses strong language to confront the readers with the gravity of their actions: slander and judgment are not minor offenses but direct challenges to God's sovereignty. Why: To expose the root issue, a lack of humility and an indifference to their own sinfulness, and to remind believers of their obligation to live out mercy, reflecting God's own mercy toward them. THE DEVOTIONAL James highlights a fundamental problem within the church: slander and judgment. These sins go far beyond careless thoughts or words—they're acts of rebellion where we attempt to climb onto God's throne, assuming His role as Judge. In doing so, we not only harm our relationships but challenge God's authority and distort His mercy. Let's be honest: everyone has slandered at some point. It often stems from unresolved conflicts, inflated pride, or personal agendas. We might excuse it as harmless venting or a way to “set things straight,” but James tears down these justifications. He calls slander and judgment what they truly are—arrogant attempts to take God's seat of authority. Instead of obeying His law, we elevate ourselves above it, making ourselves judges of others and, ultimately, judges of the law itself. But here's the reality: God alone is the Lawgiver and Judge. He alone has the wisdom, knowledge, and moral perfection to discern hearts and make eternal judgments. Our role is not to rule from a place of self-righteousness but to step off the throne, trust God's perfect justice, and reflect His mercy. As recipients of His abundant grace, we are called to extend that same grace to others by showing love and humility in every relationship. So, it's time to stop slandering. It's time to stop making sinful, self-righteous judgments. It's time to step off the throne that was never yours to sit on in the first place. Instead of playing God, surrender to Him. Trust in His perfect justice, guard your words, and examine your heart. Let His mercy be the lens through which you see others, and ask Him to cultivate humility in you. Today, step down and let God's mercy rule your heart, mind, and words. Let's do this together. Say it out loud today. "I am stepping off Your throne." #GuardYourWords, #GodIsJudge, #SpeakMercy

Like clockwork, with every election cycle immigration becomes a lightning rod for politicians on both sides of the aisle to take advantage of and exploit. Beyond the empty often vitriolic rhetoric, seldom are the nuances, intricacies, and perhaps most importantly the shortcomings of the nation's immigration ever system truly explored in-depth by our public leaders and officials. However, for decades artists have taken to a plethora of mediums to explore not just the effects of the U.S. immigration system, but what it means to be an immigrant in the U.S.. Art is not only a reflection of our society. It is also a means by which we air our frustrations, channel our grief, and collectively document the general sentiment that is often held at a given time. In our latest episode, we are joined by Dr. Lizbeth De La Cruz Santana, an assistant professor of Chicano Studies in the Department of Black and Latino Studies at Baruch College in New York City. Dr. De La Cruz Santana is also the director of both the Playas De Tiajuana and the El Paso del Norte Mural Projects, as well as a researcher for the Humanizing Deportation project. A community-based digital storytelling project and the world's most robust public qualitative archive that documents the human consequences of contemporary migration and border control in the U.S. and Mexico. Dr. De La Cruz Santana joins us on Step Off! Radio to not only share her work as an academic but, also as someone who regularly spends her time on the ground at the border to work with disaffected communities. All too often the conversation around immigration is told by people who don't come from immigrant backgrounds, who are not from border communities, and people who simply do not understand the complexities and nuances of what is the busiest and most consequential border crossing on the entire planet. It goes without saying most of Technique's music focuses on issues pertaining to U.S. and global politics. His views expressed in his lyrics largely share commentary on issues such as class struggle, socialism, poverty, religion, government, imperialism, and institutional racism. Over the years the Peruvian-born, Harlem-raised activist and rapper has a released string of three critically acclaimed studio albums and a mixtape which have garnered him a reputation for incorporating complex lyricism, unfeigned humanitarianism, and highly intellectual historical analysis within his music. Likewise, Immortal Technique not only talks the talk but backs his lyrics with concrete action. Immortal Technique's humanitarianism has reached far and wide – from mentoring youth in prison to building an orphanage in Afghanistan funded by his third album, The 3rd World, to helping to rebuild Haiti after 2010's devastating earthquake and delivering life-saving supplies for migrants traveling in the treacherous deserts of the U.S.-Mexico border, Technique's life's work both inside and outside of the recording booth have truly been with the people. Likewise, during the height of the pandemic in 2020, he started his own charity, The Rebel Army Runs to take care of the elders in his community of Harlem NY, and many others around the U.S.  In today's episode, Immortal Technique joins Step Off! In the last episode, Megan Burns and I talk about the Hedonic Treadmill . It is a problem that looms ove customer experience improvement efforts. What do you do? Improve the experience, only to have that improvement raise expectations for customers as they adapt to the new normal? Well, in this episode, I go describe two ways of improving customer experiences that will not activate the Hedonic Treadmill. You first set clearer expectations for the experience to come, and meet the expectations you have set. Rather than customers expecting you to raise the bar, they expect you to fulfill your promises. That's a great experience.Second, empower and enable employees to deliver surprise and delight moments at scale. Human-powered moments feel more authentic and of-the-moment, and therefore something that they are less likely to adapt to and expect every time. What God Showed Me At The Playground • The Todd Coconato Show Website: www.PastorTodd.org To give: www.ToddCoconato.come/give Yesterday afternoon, I took my daughter to the playground and God showed me something… Life, in many ways, can be likened to a playground—a place filled with opportunities, challenges, and a spectrum of experiences. From a Biblical Christian perspective, this analogy can help us understand the journey of faith, the choices we make, and the attitudes we hold toward life's ups and downs. Just as a playground is dotted with slides, swings, and sandboxes, life presents us with a variety of paths and experiences. The biggest slides could symbolize the moments that require courage and faith, the opportunities to step out in trust, believing that God is with us even in the most daunting challenges. My daughter was scared and shaky, but she knew her father was with her so she went to the highest slide and when she did, she loved it! These moments often lead to significant growth and exhilarating experiences in our faith journey, much like the thrill of going down the biggest slide. On any playground, you'll notice some children hesitantly watching from the sidelines, perhaps overwhelmed by fear or discouraged by a previous fall. Similarly, in life, some of us find ourselves on the sidelines, held back by fear, past failures, or a sense of inadequacy. We watch others embrace the fullness of life's playground, longing to join but unsure if we can. Instead, we remain on the bench. I even saw a few kids crying. Crying at the playground? They were missing out on a good day and many awesome memories! The Bible encourages us to not be controlled by fear but to trust in God's presence and promises. Isaiah 41:10 says, "So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand." This verse is a gentle nudge to step into the playground of life, reassured of God's unfailing support and guidance. We need to get off the bench and participate. We still have many opportunities ahead, and we need to enjoy the moment. The playground is most enjoyed when we participate fully, whether that's by tackling the biggest slide, swinging as high as we can, or simply enjoying the sandbox. Similarly, life is richest and most fulfilling when we engage with the opportunities God places before us, using our talents for His glory, and stepping out in faith where He leads! Paul's words in Philippians 4:12-13 remind us of the secret to contentment and strength in every situation: "I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, ... I can do all this through him who gives me strength." Encouragement to Step Off the Sidelines For those of us on the sidelines, it might be time to wipe away our tears and trust that the same God who created the universe is with us on the playground of life. He's cheering us on, ready to catch us if we fall, and encouraging us to experience the fullness of life in Him. The playground analogy serves as a reminder that life, with its challenges and joys, is an opportunity for us to live boldly and faithfully. It invites us to move beyond our fears, to embrace the adventures God has in store, and to experience the profound joy and fulfillment that come from trusting and walking with Him. What God Showed Me At The Playground | Todd Coconato Show Website: www.PastorTodd.org To give: www.ToddCoconato.come/give Yesterday afternoon, I took my daughter to the playground and God showed me something… Life, in many ways, can be likened to a playground—a place filled with opportunities, challenges, and a spectrum of experiences. From a Biblical Christian perspective, this analogy can help us understand the journey of faith, the choices we make, and the attitudes we hold toward life's ups and downs.   Just as a playground is dotted with slides, swings, and sandboxes, life presents us with a variety of paths and experiences. The biggest slides could symbolize the moments that require courage and faith, the opportunities to step out in trust, believing that God is with us even in the most daunting challenges. My daughter was scared and shaky, but she knew her father was with her so she went to the highest slide and when she did, she loved it! For the past several years, Sham Blak has made a name for himself as one of the most versatile emcees in San Diego's Underground Hip-Hop scene. Originally hailing from Southeast San Diego, Sham has made it his mission to deliver raw, unapologetic Hip-Hop with the sensibilities of today's modern audiences. Over the years Sham Blak has pulled influence from a plethora of classic artists and his peers in the local Hip-Hop scene. He has also consistently shown his appreciation for dark beats and incorporating clever rhymes into his music to create a unique tapestry of sounds that has set his catalog apart from the standard run-of-the-mill music heard throughout much of the region. As a member of the Hip-Hop collective Spooky Gaang and having released a slew of mixtapes over the years; Sham Blak has quickly made a name for himself with his use of dark production and sharp lyrical wit which has further set him apart from his contemporaries in the local San Diego underground scene. In today's episode, Sham Blak joins Step Off! Radio to discuss the inspirations behind his music, growing up as an aspiring emcee in Southeast San Diego, his time in the military, and the backstory behind some of his works. Broadly interested in zoonotic diseases and their wildlife reservoirs, Cylita's research focuses on bats and their pathogens. Using both field surveys and computational methods she is investigating why bats seem to be good at carrying viruses that they sometimes share with humans, but rarely get sick from themselves. When not in the field catching bats or at her computer analyzing data, Cylita looks to help others foster their own sense of curiosity and discovery about the natural world. In conjunction with the High Park Nature Centre Cylita has started a Junior Bat Biologist program to engage young, future scientists. She also works as a Host at the Ontario Science Centre, educating the public about diverse scientific topics. Finally, Cylita's hilarious field exploits are featured in a general audience book titled Fieldwork Fail: The Messy Side of Science! In her down time, you can find your friendly neighborhood batgirl chasing her next big outdoor adventure. Maija was born to a family of musicians in the heartland, far from the sea. Minnesota was her first hailing port. School, university and adventures took her to Finland, Wisconsin and Lebanon. After receiving her B.A. in International Relations and Environmental studies, she followed the smell of sweet salt air and ran away to see the sea aboard her 28-foot sloop. In 2008, the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater appeared on the horizon and she jumped at the chance to combine her interests in music, sailing, teaching, science, water ecology, environmental advocacy and pumping the bilge. The Utah Jazz fell to the New York Knicks last night in a game where they were just a step slow all night long. The Jazz turnovers have become an issue because it is leading to a ton of transition for the opponent. With that said their were a lot of things to like from the Jazz they played right, they shared, they got good shots and had good shot distrubution.Kelly Olynyk is better the more we watch him and David Locke, radio voice of the Utah Jazz and Jazz NBA Insider, thought it might turn out to be the opposite.
