2022 Cigar of the Year Countdown (Coop's List): #18: Fonseca by My Father Robusto (Audio)

Coming in at #18 is Fonseca by My Father Cigars Robusto. At the end of 2019, one of the more surprising stories that hit the news was the acquisition of the Fonseca brand by My Father Cigars from the Quesada family. The Fonseca brand was established in Cuba by Don Francisco Fonseca in 1892. The Dominican version of the Fonseca brand has been made by the Quesada family since 1974. While under the Quesada stewardship, the brand maintained an important part of the Quesada portfolio. In 2020, the Garcia family would release its own interpretation of the Fonseca Brand with the Fonseca by My Father - which would become a regular production offering in the My Father portfolio. The Fonseca by My Father is produced at the My Father Cigars factory located in Estelí, Nicaragua. The blend features 100% Nicaraguan tobaccos grown by the Garcia family. The blend is highlighted by a shade-grown Nicaraguan Corojo '99 wrapper. The Robusto size measures 5 1/4 x 52. The Fonseca by My Father Cigars delivered a mix of natural tobacco, earth, hay, pepper, and baker's spice. This cigar was medium for both strength and body. It's a cigar that I found a little less aggressive than many My Father offerings and a little more aggressive than most of the Quesada-made Fonseca offerings. For My Father Cigars, this marks the sixth year it has landed a cigar on the Cigar Coop Countdown. If you are keeping score at home, Nicaragua has now landed nine of the 13 cigars unveiled thus far on the 2022 Countdown. It's also the 12th different company and 11th different factory to land on this year's countdown. Full Report: https://wp.me/p6h1n1-ol3

In our search for the best cigars to pair with coffee, I stumbled upon the Drew Estate Liga Undercrown Shade, a cigar I've seen a lot of people talking about, but one I have yet to try. After pulling the Undercrown Shade out of the cellophane and giving it a big sniff, I could smell wheat and grass. Not green grass, but grass that's been aging under the sun for a few days.Cigar Monster Deals: CigarScore.com/CigarMonster03:14 - DTT Sobremesa Brulee Review: https://www.cigarscore.com/cigar-review-dunbarton-tobacco-and-trust-sobremesa-brulee-toro/Top 10 Best Cigars to Pair with Coffee: https://www.CigarScore.com/BreakfastCigarsWith a punch, the draw was perfect, and I could taste Grape Nuts cereal. San Cristobal De La Habana La Punta - Still easily one of my too 3 cuban smokes, could be number one! Floral notes with wood flavors, so good they don't last long in my humidor. La Aurora Puro Vintage 2004 - Excellent smoke, perfect burn, draw, and construction, A+ smoking experience. Needs a little age, but awesome flavors (subtle spice with sweet tobacco) and great complexity Ramon Allones Specially Selected - I like this smoke, good cuban change of pace cigar for me, lots of earth, not your typical cuban flavor profile. Tatuaje Anarchy - The most bland Tatuaje ever, could not find much flavor, and what I did get was not very enjoyable Montecristo Edmundo - Nice light cedar flavor, this is my new morning smoke! Goes great with coffee and isn't a really heavy or strong cigar, but is filled with flavor. Punch Double Corona - Weird burn and draw, but still very enjoyable. Nice flavors throughout, a bit more bold in the flavor and strength department than several other similar cigars from Cuba. Partagas Serie D #4 - Still one of my favorite cuban cigars, like It far better than the RASS or Bolivar Petite Corona, tons of flavor and very complex. Paul Garmirian Reserva Exclusiva Corona - I like the panatella better, but thats like saying you like duck better than top sirloin. Outstanding flavors on this cigar, not a lot of change (if any), but a solid smoke. Illusione Singulare Phantom LE 2010 - Awesome smoke, my favorite Illusione. Such amazing flavors this cigar delivers, very enjoyable! Opus X Forbidden X Lancero 2009 - Lots of leather, touch of sweet flavor, snug draw. Just okay, not amazing. La Flor Dominicana El Jocko - Super old cigar, was still full bodied and had an awesome sweetness. This cigar was from 2003. Hoyo De Monterey Churchill - This was also a great stick, the flavors were not as well balances as some of the other Cubans I smoked, but still a solid smoke. These need lots of age, and are good when not aged, but really come to life after 4 years. Overall, very enjoyable, and box worthy. Tim's List Ortega Serie D No. 6 - This Corona from Eddie Ortega (formly of EO Brands Inc) features a Mexican San Andreas wrapper, and a binder/fillers from Esteli, Nicaragua. I paired a glass of Fonseca 10 year Old Tawny Port. Wow! What winning combination. The Ortega Serie D began with some cocoa and coffee notes and quickly transitioned to earth, leather, and pepper. I really enjoyed the smoke and will be picking up more of these soon. “Box Worthy”. La Aurora Puro Vintage 2004 - This was my disaapointment of the week. It is one sexy looking cigar. Unfortunately, it seemed to be a little under filled and consequently burned hot. I countered the effects by less frequent draws and was presented with a bread like flavor profile with the additional appearance of spice and burnt caramel that would take turns on my palate. The last third was a wash, as it became too hot to finish. Consequently, I am going to hold off on making an assessment until I can revisit. Tatuaje 109 Federal Cigar 90th Reserva - This cigar was a limited run created for Federal Cigar in New Hampshire last year. This 7 x 50 Nicaraguan cigar features a Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper. An opening of cocoa quickly transitioned to bitter sweet chocolate, leather, and pepper. The pepper was subtle at first but increased in strength as the cigar progressed. Burn and draw were good. An interesting cigar but it did not “wow” me either. If you come across a few singles (they are sold out now) I would grab a couple to try. Romeo y Juiletta Short Churchill - Box date on these are June 2011. While not as smooth and tastey of the 2010's I recently reviewed here, still an enjoyable mild/medium body smoke. I cannot wait to smoke another! "Box Worthy" Gran Habano Corojo #5 Imperiales - A friend gifted me this 6 x 60 monster. I was working late Monday night from home, so I decided to fire this bad boy up. This stick features a Nicaraguan Corojo wrapper, Nicaraguan Habano binder, and Nicaraguan, Mexican, and Costa Rican fillers. The burn and draw were perfect and I would describe the strength and flavor as a solid medium. It was a good smoke but didn't change up much. Having smoked the Habano #3 in the past, I do find the darker flavors of that stick more to my liking. Still a solid smoke the money and I would recommend it to anyone who wants a medium strength smoke while they work arond the yard. "The Angler" Kristoff Kristania Toro - Released at IPCPR 2011, this Kristoff retails for less than $6.00 and offers some nice flavors including coffee and vanilla. Burn and draw were decent. For the money a definite smoke I could keep around for when I am fishing or grilling. "The Angler". Padilla Miami 8&9 Belicoso Finos - Wow what a great smoke. This Nicarguan Puro from 2008 was a gift from fellow BOTL, Will. Thank You, it has been a while since I had one of these! This blend was created by Don Pepin Garcia and this particular size was an exclusive to CI (2008-2009). "Box Worthy" Stogie Tech: Using Cigar Auction Sites How it works There are few auction sites on the Internet. The two that we have used most are CigarBid (From Cigars International) and Cigar Auctioneer (From Famous Smoke). Once you create an account you are able to place bids. When you create an account you give them a Credit Card number to keep on file. Then you choose when you want to have your cigars shipped, as they will ship once a week in a batch. For example, Cigar Auctioneer charges $5.99 flat rate shipping and ships to me every Wednesday. This means everything I bid on before Tuesday at midnight will be included in that shipment and usually arrives at my house on Friday. Its also important to get to know the different auction types and terminology: Lots - A "Lot" is an item or a group of items that has been posted for auction. For example, "Arturo Fuente Don Carlos Robusto". Note that a lot can contain one or more items. English Auctions - In an English Auction, a lot is offered for sale at a given starting price. Bidders bid the highest price they are willing to pay for that lot. At the closing of the auction the lot is sold to the highest bidder at their bid price. Yankee Auctions - A Yankee Auction is a variation of the Dutch Auction where one or more identical items are offered for sale at the same time. In cases where a lot contains multiple identical items, at the closing of the auction, the highest bidders win the merchandise at their bid price as opposed to paying the price determined by the lowest qualified bidder (as in a Dutch Auction). (NOTE: Auto-bidding is not available for a Yankee Auction) Free Fall Auction - Unlike other auctions where the price is driven up by bids, the Free Fall Price is driven down by us and you decide what you are willing to pay. Free Fall Auctions allow you to purchase an item at a discounted price, eliminating the bidding process. QuickBuy - QuickBuy allows you to purchase an item at a discounted price, eliminating the bidding process. CAUTION: Stay away from any auction site that charges you to bid, its pretty much a scam. Sure, you can bid $1.00 on a box and win, but everyone is paying for bids. So items that get a lot of bids make up for the box you got for a buck. Its just a scam, read about it in the forums for more information. MORE CAUTION - Take notice on bids where you are bidding on single cigars and multiples. For example, sometimes its not clear whether the price is for EACH cigar or the entire lot. You can get yourself into trouble if you start bidding $30 on 5 cigars, and thats the cost per cigar not for all 5. When you want to bid on cigars, here are some rules Rule 1: Decide the maximum price you are willing to pay before you bid - This is the most important rule. Ignore what anyone lists as the MSRP. When you find something you want to buy on auction, search around on the Internet and your local B&Ms and see who has the lowest price. Then, when you bid, make sure you are at least 10-20% below that price (Don't forget you have to pay shipping). Rule 2: Be mindful of the shipping cost and frequency - Sometimes I will bid on something and forget that I am outside my shipping window. So, I may have a box and 3 5-packs on the way, but the 3 cigars I just bid on won't come until next week. This is when I will bid on more stuff, just to offset the shipping. Rule 3: Set a reserve if you can - Reserves are great, and I love the English auctions. It really allows me to say "I would pay as much as $X for that", set my reserve, and forget about it. The cool part is sometimes you get it for the initial bid! Example, if I need to bid $100 on a box of cigars to be the highest bidder, but would pay $125, I set my reserve to $125. If I win the lot for $100, its a score! Rule 4: Use Favorites or Watchlists - This allows you to keep track of stuff you are interested in, which is nice. I will look at all of the stuff available on auction, and add the good stuff to my watch list for later. On Cigar Auctioneer you can look at future auctions too. Rule 4: Get a Larger Humidor - If you start getting good at this, you're going to need more space! I use a giant cooler with beads to store my overflow stuff. Who knows, you may be able to win a new humidor on auction cheap! Stuff I have won on Auction recently La Aurora Puro Vintage Salamone 2003 - 5-Pack $29.00 La Aurora Puro Vintage Salamone 2003 - 5-Pack - $41.00 - So I got 10 of these for $70, meaning $7.00 each. MSRP is $20.00 each, and CI is selling them for $16.95 each. Gurkha Cigarnivore No. V Sampler - 18 Cigars - $34.00 La Aurora Preferidos LE Lancero Cameroon (Single) - My Winning Quantity 5 of 7 - $7.00 Each Guillermo Leon Corona Gorda - 5 Pack - $19.00 Blazer CG-001 Cigar Lighter $30.00 Alec Bradley Black Market Robusto 5 Pack $22.00 Padron 3000 Box $112.00 La Riqueza No. 4 5 Pack $15.00 La Aurora Escogidos Robusto 3 @ $3.00/each

Cigar of the Week - San Lotano Oval - by AJ Fernandez. Wrapper: Habano 2000 Wrapper (4+ years) Binder: Nicaragua Filler: Nicaragua / Honduras (AJ Fernandez Secret Filler) What else have you been smokin' Dale? Indian Tabac Super Fuerte Robusto - 5 x 50 A cigar I have smoked for years, this is one of the sticks that put Rocky Patel on the map. Made in Honduras with Nicaraguan, Honduran and Costa Rican tobaccos wrapped in a Corojo wrapper, this blend provides creamy rich flavors - coffee, chocolate and nutty, with some tangy exotic spices. Don Lino Africa Gordito Torpedo - 4” x 58 Tobaccos from Honduras, Dominican Republic, Nicaragua and Africa combine for a bold smoke in a short “me too” size. Smooth and complex, but full of hearty flavors What else have you been smokin' Bob? La Sirena - The Prince : 5x50 version of the cigar launched in late 2010 by Miami Cigar & Co, produced by My Father Cigars. Utilizes Nicaraguan Criollo 98 and Nicaraguan Corojo 96 in the filler plus a dual Nicaraguan Habano and Nicaraguan Corojo binder wrapped in a hearty Connecticut Broadleaf Maduro wrapper. A hearty and sumptuous smoke with coffee, leather and a savory sweetness. I like them so much I bought a box. Oh and you have got to love that band that covers at least a third of this size, I remove it before lighting to avoid flash fires. La Sirena is offered in the following 5 sizes: Sea Sprite – 5.5 x 42 The Prince – 5 x 50 Divine – 5.5 x 52 (figurado) King Poseidon – 6 x 60 Trident – 7 x 50 Padron 1964 Anniversary - When you want a full flavored cigar that will transport you back in time to a simpler place where men smoked cigars, dogs were allowed in the saloon and gas cost less than a dollar a gallon, grab yourself one of these. This is the most expensive cigar I smoke regularly, not daily but a couple a month because this cigar is perfectly balanced, well aged and smooth flavored. Everything a guilty pleasure should be without the guilt. Choose your pleasure in maduro or natural wrapper. La Reloba Sumatra - Another product of My Father Cigars. This is still one of my favorites and I have decided I prefer the Sumatra to the Habano. Medium to full bodied these cigars are affordable and flavorful. The Sumatra has a woody-leather flavor profile that balances out nicely with the savory accents and sweetness of this cigar. What's My Band? - The Ilusione mj12 provided by Liz. Overall, Bob was not particularly fond of this cigar. He felt that the flavors were OK but that there was no particular balance. Palio Cutter Contest: The August winner of a classic black Palio cutter is Gregory Dunn from Massachusettes. For September's contest, we are looking for photos of you and your friends enjoying cigars. Send your entry to theshow@cigarmedia.tv. As a follow up to the July 2nd DWCR episode, George Edmonson sends in an email clarifying HR 1639's (Traditional Cigar Manufacturing and Small Business Jobs Preservation Act of 2011) definition of traditional premium cigars. The Cigar of the Week is the Monte Pascoal Minuto. The cigar featured on the "What's My Band?" blind smoke test is the Vegas de Santiago Toro Maduro in the Puro series. A special thanks to listener Magnus Stensson in Australia for sending in the cigar samples used in this week's unbanded segment. Check out the live show! Cigar of the Week - Monte Pascoal Minuto (4 ⅜ x 42) Wrapper: Brazil Mata Fina Binder: Brazil Mata Fina Filler: Brazil Mata Fina and Mata Norte Box of 25 What else have you been smokin' Dale? Camacho Liberty 2005 - This year’s Independence Day celebratory cigar! With 6 years of age, I was expecting great things, and I was not disappointed. Opening the red, white & blue flag theme individual coffin, I see an 11/18 size cigar wrapped in tissue paper. Upon removing the tissue, I was greeted with a plume covered stick, still glistening from the oily dark wrapper. Flavors were typically Camacho, with a very smooth earthy character. Cane sugar sweetness underscored the peaty, smokey core. Deep leather, toasted almond and malted barley flavors danced around each puff. Very full bodied and bold, but age has tempered the Camacho strength. Truly a magnificent cigar befitting the occasion! Gurkha Beauty - I received another of these in a sampler pack. My opinion remains the same, a really good medium bodied cigar but the large ring size is not comfortable for me. Calle Ocho Churchill 7” x 50 - Also arriving in a sampler pack, this cigar left me wanting more. The light wrapper and mild-med blend wasn’t unpleasant, but just lacked in balanced flavor and excitement. Good construction, great burn and a nice herbal room aroma were the only highlights..... and the price is low - can be found for around $40 per bundle of 20. Made in Nicaragua with Nicaraguan fillers & binder and wrapped with a Ecuadorian grown Sumatra leaf. Padilla Series ‘68 Golden Bear 6” x 60 - Nicaraguan Corojo wrapper over a Nicaraguan filler blend of Jalapa and Condega grown tobaccos. This line has been consistently outstanding, and although I don’t prefer the 60 ring gauge, the cigar was excellent! The wrapper is a dark reddish color and provides a molasses sweetness to the smoke. Coffee, cedar, lemon and light spice notes accentuated the core of toasted, well aged tobacco flavors. A creamy, thick full bodied smoke with great complexity. What else have you been smokin' Bob? El Hijo - A Smoke Inn exclusive. The complete run was only 650 boxes, packed 15 cigars to a box. The stick will retail $9.75 ea / $146 a box. This is an amazing smoke and offered in such limited quantities. My Father cigars has continued to grow and sophisticate over the years. There is nothing lost from the orginal Cuban classics but much gained in the added smoothness, fine tobacco, excellent construction and a burn that goes for days. Great smoke. Thank you Abe Dababneh, proprietor of Smoke Inn, for sending these outstanding smokes for Bob to experience! What else have you been smokin' Craig? Quesada Espana Robusto - If I was writing a top 10 list for 2011, this would be included on it. The ‘young ones’ have proven their maturity with this outstanding new blend that is making an impression throughout the industry. Expect that at the upcoming IPCPR convention, Quesada’s booth will be all a flutter with people interviewing & trying to get the new scoop on this hot new product from the Dominican Republic. Ashton La Aroma de Cuba - Mi Amor Robusto - What a little rocket! I love this blend and think of it as perhaps my favorite blend out of the My Father factory in Esteli, Nicaragua. A must try that will always have a place in my humidor. J. Fuego - 777 Maduro - Yumm!!! What's My Band? - this week's Unbanded Cigar is the Vegas de Santiago Toro Maduro which was provided by listener Magnus Stensson. Thanks Magnus! Bob: Very nice cigar with a touch of spice on a solid leather foundation. It was a little tough getting smoke out of this at times but over alll I really enjoyed it. This week Bryan Newbury, Manager of Centro Cigars in Lawrence, Kansas and regular contributor on "What's hot? What's not? What's next?" is a guest on the show. Bob interviews Christopher Fernandez and Julio Quinones, owners of Cigar Bros. The Encendido from Cigar Brothers is the Cigar of the Week. Carl Holtman provides this week's unbanded cigar, the La Flor Dominicana Cameroon Cabinet Lancero. David Dennis from Toledo suggests this week's show topic: branded cigar lounges. Don't forget to check out the show while it is being recorded at www.livestream.com/cigar_radio where the show is broadcast live most Friday evenings at 9 PM EST. Cigar of the Week - Encendido from Cigar Bros. This is a 100% Costa Rican Puro. It is a medium- to full-bodied cigar and packed full of flavor! Cigar Brothers specially selected each and every leaf that has gone into this cigar to make sure that it is not only up to their standards but also up to the cigar connoisseur's standards. Dark Side - - No Dark Side this week. What else have you been smokin' Dale? CAO America Robusto - First one of these I ever had did not suit me at all, but this one this week really satisfied! Deep flavors with a wonderful sweetness. Gotta love that fine natural stripe on the maduro background too. A beautiful cigar. Punch Rare Corojo 10th Anniversary Toro - New blend in this line for 2011, with a Conny Broadleaf binder over Hond, Dom & Nica fillers. The wrapper is a Connecticut grown Corojo leaf, where the regular Rare Corojo line uses an Ecuadorian grown Sumatra wrapper. Banding for the 10th Anny edition is also different, more white than red. Not a bad smoke, but I far prefer the regular blend. The 10th Anny is a tad harsher and not as rich. J. Fuego 777 Maduro Robusto - Having revisited all the 777 line up in the last few weeks, the maduro still comes out as my favorite. Although the Brazilian grown Corojo wrapped version is very good, I think the Maduro wrapper and the blend gives more complexity and richer flavors. The whole line is nice, but given my druthers, make mine a Maduro! What else have you been smokin' Bob? Miami Cigar Art Deco - A collaboration of Nestor Miranda nad Don Pepin Garcia, the blend consists of 60% Nicaraguan and 40% Dominican San Vicente, dual Dominican Criollo ’98/Nicaraguan Habano ’00 binder, and a dark, oily and aromatic Nicaraguan Corojo ’06 wrapper leaf affixed with a triple cap. A metallic band gives the cigars a finishing touch with a striking contrast. Don Jose ‘Pepin’ Garcia, renowned for his creativity with Nicaraguan tobacco, has also chosen a Dominican San Vicente leaf, which comprises more than a third of the blend’s core leaves. An amazing blend using 40% Dominican tobacco. In lieu of the traditional wood boxes, Nestor Miranda Art Deco is presented in a handsome, metallic art-deco designed tins of 21 cigars, in three popular sizes: Coffee Break - 4.5 x 50 Robusto Grande - 5.5 x 54 Gran Toro - 6 x 60 EPC White Album errr....E.P. Carrillo New Wave Connecticut - Country of Origin: Dominican Republic Brand Name: E.P. Carrillo Binder: Nicaragua Filler: Dominican Republic, Nicaragua Wrapper: Ecuador 777 One - Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper, Nicaraguan Corojo Binder, 2/3 Nicaraguan Corojo and ⅓ Nica Criollo filler 777 Corojo wrapper is Brazilian Corojo, the binder is Nicaraguan Corojo and the filler is 2/3 Nicaraguan Corojo and ⅓ Nica Criollo EPC Elencos - From the creator of the original La Gloria Cubana comes the Elencos Series. Following the outstanding success of the Elenco (2010 LE rated 94 by Cigar Aficionado and their No.8 cigar of 2010), Ernesto decided to launch an entire line based on the blend. The cigar features a beautiful Brazil Habano wrapper, with a Dominican binder and a Nicaraguan blend of filler. Medium to full bodied, complex and full flavored. What's My Band? - this week's Unbanded Cigar, the La Flor Dominicana Careroon Cabinet Lancero (a non-production cigar), was provided by Carl Holtman. March Palio Cutter Contest Winner: Darren Powell from Urbana, Illinois, won the black carbon fiber Palio Cutter. Enter the April contest now to win a Burl Palio Cutter. This week Bob interviews Abe Flores about Pinar del Rio cigars. Bob and Dale discuss cigar rituals, the New York City outdoor smoking ban, and the upcoming Studio Tobac Tour. They also field several chat room questions from listeners viewing the show at www.livestream.com/cigar_radio (where the show is broadcast live most Friday evenings at 9 PM EST). Thanks goes out to Adam Zilinski from Canada for providing this week's unbanded, the Gran Habano SLS 3 Salomones. Cigar of the Week - Pinar del Rio 1878 Cubano Especial Capa Natural Darkside - HOYO DE MONTERREY LE HOYO DU DEPUTE Length: 110mm (4.3”) Ring Gauge: 38 One of the 7 Global Brands (as defined by Habanos SA), HdM is made to be a lighter character cigar. The Du Depute is a Trabucos vitola, more commonly referred to as a Short Panatela, and is a pre-1960’s release. No longer sold in the slide lid box of 50 or in the cardboard 5 pack, they only come in boxes of 25 today due to Habanos SA tightening their portfolio. What else have you been smokin' Dale? Romeo y Julietta 1875 Reserve Toro - 56 x 6” From the Flor de Copan factory in Honduras, the filler is Honduran & Nicaraguan, the binder is Nicaraguan and the wrapper is Honduran. This stick is a couple of notches above the regular RyJ line in richness and smoothness. A very good cigar that should be re-visited if you like earthy flavors surrounded with some complexity of mild spice, vanilla and hearty herbal notes. Esteban Carreras 5150 Toro - 50 x 6” The binder and filler all come from Corojo tobacco grown in Nicaragua and the cigar is covered in an Ecuadorian Sumatra leaf that is dark brown & silky. Medium bodied with wood, spice and some fruity sweetness (pears came to mind). I’ve had several of these now and all exhibit great construction, perfect draw and an even burn. The price is right too - the 5150 and it’s companion release, the 187 are around $5-$6 - a good value! Ernesto Perez-Carillo new release - This week I’ve smoked another each of two new cigars coming from the new EPC factory in Santiago. They were both toro size, one had a light Ecuadorian wrapper and one a darker Nicaraguan wrapper. No line names had been decided when I picked these up from Yunior Torrez at the EPC factory a few weeks ago. This new line, as with all the EPC cigars exhibit outstanding construction - very firm and even bunches, silky smooth and top grade wrappers and a perfect draw. Deep rich flavors on the savory side of the spectrum from both, with the lighter cigar leaning a bit towards an herbal character, the darker cigar having more developed sweetness and body. Hopefully these will be named and released this summer - I saw a few thousand sitting in the aging room in several sizes. What else have you been smokin' Bob? Jesus Fuego Origen Robusto - wrapper: Brazilian Corojo; binder: Costa Rican Corojo; filler: 1/2 Dominican Corojo, 1/2 Nicaraguan Corojo; price: MSRP $7.00 Padron Anniversary 1964 Romeo y Julietta Viejo Gold Band Box Pressed - Viejo, a recent addition to the Romeo y Julieta family, features a San Andres maduro wrapper and a multi-country blend of fillers. The flavor boasts notes of wood and bread, provides a moderate finish, and is medium in body. Each cigar is box pressed and comes packaged in traditional boxes of 20. Unfortunately I did not like one of two of the cigars that I had. The first one was OK, not a bad smoke and actually pleasant and unassuming though not as complex as they would have you believe. But the second version of this cigar I tried was a difficult smoke and half way through I gave up. No smoke, hard to draw and therefore no flavor. I felt it was a waste of my time. What's My Band? - #951, the Gran Habano SLS 3 Salomones, provided by listener Adam Zilinski. February Palio Cutter Contest Winner: Jared Street from Akron, Ohio, won the silver Palio Cutter. In addition to being a long-time listener, Mark administers a cigar friendly web site (http://www.tobaccoevents.com/) that lists cigar events for Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee, Indiana, and Illinois. The site also includes great articles of interest, product reviews, photos and videos, product offers from local retailers, and smoker-friendly locations. Bob and Dale are planning another live show for New Years Eve! Details coming soon. Check out livestream.com/cigar_radio the new home (maybe) for our live recording sessions and enhanced chat room. You might catch Bob & Dale at 9 pm EST on Fridays as they test the capabilities of their equipment in preparation for the live show on New Years Eve. Cigar of the Week - Art Deco. Developed by Nestor Miranda and rolled in the My Father Cigar factory in Estelli, this cigar is distributed by Miami Cigar and Company. Introduced at the 2010 International Premium Cigar & Pipe Retailer convention (IPCPR), this new cigar's blend is 60 percent Nicaraguan Corojo 99 and 40 percent Dominican San Vicente, dual Dominican Criollo '98/Nicaraguan Habano '00 binder, and a dark, oily and aromatic Nicaraguan Corojo '06 wrapper leaf with a triple cap "We wanted to get Pepin out of his comfort zone, which is using Nicaraguan tobacco," said Nestor Miranda. "He accepted the challenge and came out with an amazing blend using 40% Dominican tobacco." Instead of using traditional wooden boxes, the Nestor Miranda Art Deco will be sold in metallic art-deco designed tins with 21 cigars each. The sizes are: Coffee Break / 4.5 x 50 Robusto Grande / 5.5 x 54 Gran Toro / 6 x 60 Dark Side - Romeo y Julieta Churchill First produced in the 1850’s by Alvarez Rodriquez and Jose Garcia, the brand was named after the famous Shakespeare characters. In 1903 the brand was purchased by Jose Rodriquez Fernandez also known as Don Pepin. This was the personal cigar (produced only for him) of Winston Churchill until about 1947. Factory name: Julieta 2 Ring Gauge: 47 Length: 7 inches A true classic that ages well and is best with at least 3 years of age. Also available in an aluminum tube What else have you been smokin' Dale? Padilla Miami Churchill - 7 x 48 - One of the old line made for Padilla by Pepin Garcia, this cigar utilized Corojo tobacco for the wrapper & binder and Criollo for the filler. The cigar has a base of creamy smoothness with cedar, earthiness and leather being the main flavor components. There is also a definitive “Cuban Twang” type of spiciness in the last 3rd which is very nice. Room aroma was surprisingly mild, but on the palette there was plenty of flavor. Vegas Robaina Edicion Regional Canada - 4.3” x 52 Petite Robaina - One of the 2009 ER releases, this cigar has the standard Robaina band with an additional Exclusivo Canada band below it. The factory size is actually a Petite Edmundo. Examples I smoked last year all had a tight draw, so I let a few sit a while. This latest one still was a bit snug in the draw, but very acceptable. Flavors very much like the Famosos, but perhaps a bit smoother. Lots of coffee bean, cocoa and peaty earthiness, with a creamy texture. Good spice in the middle of the cigar, growing to a sharp pepper in the last third. A wonderfully long finish accented by the coffee, but with a vanilla overtone. Thoroughly enjoyed this cigar and will dip in the box again more frequently now! What else have you been smokin' Bob? HC Habano Colorado - Grande 6x60 - Pre-smoke aroma is a sweet barnyard that lures you into the cigar. Although I am not typicaly a fan of 60 ring guage cigars, the aroma from the foot caused me to anxiously cut and light this fat boy. The HC Series is produced for Xikar by famed Cuban blender Jesus Fuego. The Habano Colorado engulfs the smoker in deep chocolates and a hint of sweetness that emphasizes the cigar's finely aged tobaccos. The filler is well packed with a dense ash, as if that really matters. What does matter is that the cigar smokes cool if you are careful with the draw which is gentle with only a slight hint of resistance. This is not a mild cigar but the strength is in the pure tobacco flavors and not borne of nicotine like some of today's macho blends. This is a long, engaging smoke not to be taken lightly or quickly. Just as a fine wine is meant to be savored, this is a cigar best enjoyed slowly - sipped and savored while one reflects on life and the glorious enjoyment of smoking fine cigars and the success of one's favorite sports team. Pardon me while I drift away for a few minutes enjoying this fine cigar. I’m back, reluctantly, from a land where cigar smokers are free to enjoy their passion without oppressive laws or critical disdain from family and friends. But I digress, lets get back to the HC Series from Xikar. I have been smoking this darkly enticing cigar for about an hour now and it still shines through with its complexity shrouded in the simplicity of fine tobacco expertly blended. This is a fine cigar from Xikar and the hands of Jesus Fuego. What's My Band? - #940: Siglo Limited Reserve VII Bob: Another churchill, nice barnyard aroma on the foot. Slightly tannic flavor. November Palio Cutter Contest Winner: Bob Baranek from Weymouth, Mass. won the carbon fiber Palio Cutter. Enter the December contest now to win a burl Palio Cutter. Do you have a Herf Line Review? Cigar of the Week - Di Fazio Maduro We did an interview with these folks almost a year ago before any one had heard of the cigars. We liked what we smoked then and now they have become a hot stick getting reviewed by all the major blogs and such since an appearance at the International Premium Cigar and Pipe Retailers (IPCPR). Dark Side - Punch Punch - Ramon Allones What else have you been smokin' Craig? New Tatuaje releases: Veracu #5(unbanded 4x40), Petit Cazadores (uncut wrapper) & Petit Reserva - 4x28 was the most enjoyable. 1998 Punch Monarcas en tubo Hunters & Frankau Selection. What else have you been smokin' Dale? Bad Dog Maduro Torpedo God of Fire Robusto (2006) Fresh Rolled LGC, Leo Perez What else have you been smokin' Bob? Zino Platinum Sceptor Master Edition 2009 Maduro from Davidoff - One fine smoke with terrific flavors of sweet peppers and subtle but charming hints of cocoa. Zino Platinum Master Edition 2009 Maduro cigars come in a variety of shapes and sizes inspired by the urban, pop-culture spirit. The blend consistes of 3 Dominican filler tobaccos, a rare Peruvian filler leaf, a 4-year-aged Connecticut binder and a 1-year-aged Ecuadorian wrapper. Really a great smoke. Tatuaje Havana VI (red label) Nobles - The 5x50 Nobles is an excellent example of the cooperation between its maker, Don Pepin Garcia and the creator Pete Johnson. The Havana VI is the product of Pete Johnson's vision and Pepin Garcia's craftsmanship. A Nicaraguan puro, the filler is a blend of Nicaraguan tobaccos (the Havana VI blend), the binder is from Nicaragua and the wrapper is Nicaraguan Corojo 99. It is a medium- to full-bodied cigar released in October 2006 in 6 models. The cigars have a simple red band with white print. La Aurora 107 Robusto - Still one of my favorite go to cigars for great Dominican taste. Full of flavor but not too strong, these cigars fit the definition of and are a testament to the great blending skills of Jose Blanco and Guillermo Leon. EP Carillo Short Run Populares - I only hope that the Short Run runs long enough to get some more sticks from the hands of EP Carillo. Makes you wonder what we may have missed out on all those years he was working at General Cigar. EP is taking advantage of a new environment that allows him to make cigars in smaller batches, taking advantage of tobaccos that are in limited quantity but of outstanding quality. Hoyo de Monterrey Reposado en Cedros - Actually was looking forward to these after seeing them at IPCPR, unfortunatley I find they are not my cup of tobacco. The flavors seem to be disjointed and in opposition. Too much going on in this complex cigar to let the smoker get comfortable and relax. What's My Band? - #930 from Liz; La Flor Dominicana Double Ligero; 6 x 52 Chisel tip, nice dark oily wrapper. August Palio Cutter Contest Winner: Dave Wallace won a gold Palio Cutter in the August contest. Enter the September contest now to win a classic black Palio Cutter.
