Shotgun Spratling and Chris Trevino return behind the microphones for another episode of the Helium Boys Podcast, a serious non-serious USC football podcast. The Helium Boys are back to break down the Trojans' deflating finish after pushing No. 5 Notre Dame in the Coliseum only to see the game slide through their hands in the final four minutes and the loss of fourth-year junior quarterback Miller Moss to the NCAA transfer portal. The episode opens with the Helium Boys staple 'Two-Minute Drill' that features Shotgun discussing the wildness of rivalry weekend and flag planting before Chris uses his 'Two-Minute Drill' to discuss the atmosphere in the Coliseum late in the fourth quarter when USC was driving to try to tie the game against at top five Irish club. Chris and Shotgun then dive into their Stock Up/Stock Down segment looking at the players and themes that saw their stock rise or dip this week. Action at the 1-yard line is discussed as is quarterback Jayden Maiava's performance through the first 55 minutes. The Helium Boys both have Quinten Joyner and Makai Lemon on their stock up section while the tight ends receive some love after being on the field on nearly every snap. Shotgun also brings up doghouse Ja'Kobi Lane, who played like a dawg becoming the first USC receiver with three touchdown catches against Notre Dame since Dwayne Jarrett nearly 20 years ago despite only getting 22 offensive snaps. On the flip side, Shotgun and Chris discuss everything falling apart late in the game and how 'handling pressure' saw its stock slide while the Trojans struggled to finish strong. The unfortunate end to Woody Marks' reception streak is also brought up as is the performance of the offensive line. After a break, the podcast duo answer your mailbag questions discussing the impact of USC's wide receiver usage and the debate about signature wins. There are also questions about transfer portal strategy and the possibility of an "Inferno Game" at USC in the future.. The episode concludes with Chris quizzing Shotgun with some Take It or Leave Its about the Trojans. Please review, rate and subscribe to the Peristyle Podcast on Apple Podcasts! Make sure you check out USCFootball.com for complete coverage of this USC Trojans football and basketball teams. October slipped away like a pint of Guinness... That's the famous line, right? Well anyways, the Irish just sunk Navy and we're here to take account of the first 8 weeks of this Irish season. First time guest Jack Rogers subs in for Ian as we run through our picks for offensive and defensive MVPs and Newcomer of the Year, drill into Riley Leonard's progression as the Notre Dame QB, and peer into our gambling crystal balls.
Today's Rapid Fire topics include: * We discuss Marcus Freeman's comments on defensive lineman Gabe Rubio. Did the Irish miss the edge he brings when he was out with injury for five games? * On a scale of 1 to 10...What's your confidence Riley Leonard breaks Brandon Wimbush's record of 14 rushing touchdowns in a season? * Scale of 1 to 10...What's your confidence Leonard breaks Tony Rice's single season rushing record of 884 yards? * Is it at all a bad thing if Leonard breaks either of those records? * There was a question posed on IB's Champion's Lounge recently. It's about the situation last week when Notre Dame was winning a lopsided game with the reserves in the game still throwing the ball and trying to score in the fourth quarter. His question is: Is it running up the score when you let your reserves actually play the game or just waste time by kneeling down? * If you could pick one classic game to go back in time and watch in person, what game would it be? * Which receiver will make the bigger impact after being traded this week: Amari Cooper to Buffalo or Davante Adams to the Jets? * Thoughts on Thursday's breaking news that Virginia basketball coach Tony Bennett is retiring effective immediately. Can Alabama's offensive line overcome its struggles against Tennessee's formidable front seven? With nine tackles for loss allowed against South Carolina, the Crimson Tide's line faces a critical test. Meanwhile, Georgia's Trevor Etienne has yet to break 100 yards rushing in a game this season, making his upcoming performance against Texas pivotal. Notre Dame's Riley Leonard is showing promise, averaging 9.3 total yards per attempt in his last outing, and his continued improvement is key for the Fighting Irish's playoff hopes against Georgia Tech. Rocco Becht is leading Iowa State with impressive stats, throwing for over 10 yards per attempt in four of six games. His upcoming game against UCF is crucial for maintaining the Cyclones' undefeated streak. Additionally, the NCAA's recent rule change on 12-men penalties could impact game strategies moving forward. For your next listen, check out the Locked On College Football podcast! December 31, 1973... The Fighting Irish taking on the Alabama Crimson Tide in the Sugar Bowl with the National Championship hanging in the balance. Ara Parseghian coaches his Notre Dame kids to a 24-23 upset win over Bear Bryant with Tom Clements leading the way and Frank Allocco on the sidelines, as usual, rooting on the starting QB. That was Allocco's job as the backup quarterback and he did it the way he did everything... with grace and enthusiasm. And after the 1974 season ended, Alloco's patience and work ethic would pay off. He would be the starting QB for Notre Dame. And then he wasn't. A separated shoulder before the season began ended his senior year. He would never start a game while playing at South Bend. Most would be devastated that the dream they had worked so hard to fulfill only to have it taken away when they were so close to achieving it. But not Frank. He admired greatly his coach Ara Parseghian who would often say, ‘Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents that which under prosperous conditions may have remained dormant.” Allocco graduated from ND and started a coaches clinic for basketball. Years later, that turned into a high school coaches job in California in Walnut Creek where he won a state championship in 1995. From there, he went to Concord De La Salle High School and won a 2nd state championship there. He would go on to win 600 games faster than any coach in the history of California and ended his 24 year coaching career 2nd all-time in winning percentage and is the only coach to win state titles with 2 different schools. Now at the University of San Francisco, Allocco is still changing young people lives, just like his coach and mentor Parseghian did at Notre Dame. He relishes his time in South Bend and tells us how he went from 9th on the depth chart to the backup. How he admired the tenacity of another player at Notre Dame just looking for a chance: Rudy Ruettiger. And how a chance meeting with an 86-year old "Angel" changed his life. 50 years ago he was the backup to the man on the cover of the 9/30/74 issue of Sports Illustrated, Tom Clements, but on the Past Our Prime podcast he's the starter and the winner. Missouri is adding a QB through the portal in Drew Pyne, the former Arizona State and Notre Dame QB. With Brady Cook back as one of the better SEC QBs returning, Pyne figures to be his backup. After Sam Horn underwent Tommy John surgery, there was an obvious hole on Mizzou's QB depth chart, so Drew Pyne is a welcome addition for Eli Drinkwitz.Other football tidbits include Ole Miss hiring Zach Arnett as an analyst, while also adding Bryan Brown as co-defensive coordinator and secondary coach; Greg Byrne says they didn't want a Saban disciple to replace Nick Saban; Brian Kelly and LSU add another commit for 2025. It was a busy end to the SEC basketball weekend and now we are set with the SEC Tournament - Mississippi State needs some wins as they are on the bubble, while Tennessee and Kentucky have a chance to improve their projected tourney seeding if they can go on deep runs.South Carolina defeats LSU in the Women's SEC Tournament, and it got scrappy as a fight led to a long stoppage of the clock and several ejections. Lastly, we recap a busy weekend for SEC baseball as they prepare for conference action this weekend. Texas A&M remains undefeated, while Georgia is off to one of their best starts ever. Mississippi State is heating up, while Tennessee and Arkansas keep rolling as well.
