In this episode of THE MENTORS RADIO, Daniel Ruettiger—who the world knows as "Rudy"—joins Host Dan Hesse to discuss the movie about his against-all-odds mission for admission to the University of Notre Dame, and his even more unlikely tackle in a football game. The movie "RUDY," a 1993 American biographical sports film directed by David Anspaugh, captures that now-famous tackle and the remarkable story leading up to it, in what USA Today calls “the greatest football movie of all time.” But some don't know that Rudy's greatest achievement might be getting the movie made in the first place – a “Rocky” story, but one that actually happened! Dan and Rudy discuss this journey as well as Rudy's chance encounters with Elvis Presley and Kobe Bryant. After listening to this episode you'll know first-hand why Rudy Ruettiger has become such an in-demand motivational speaker. December 31, 1973... The Fighting Irish taking on the Alabama Crimson Tide in the Sugar Bowl with the National Championship hanging in the balance. Ara Parseghian coaches his Notre Dame kids to a 24-23 upset win over Bear Bryant with Tom Clements leading the way and Frank Allocco on the sidelines, as usual, rooting on the starting QB. That was Allocco's job as the backup quarterback and he did it the way he did everything... with grace and enthusiasm. And after the 1974 season ended, Alloco's patience and work ethic would pay off. He would be the starting QB for Notre Dame. And then he wasn't. A separated shoulder before the season began ended his senior year. He would never start a game while playing at South Bend. Most would be devastated that the dream they had worked so hard to fulfill only to have it taken away when they were so close to achieving it. But not Frank. He admired greatly his coach Ara Parseghian who would often say, ‘Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents that which under prosperous conditions may have remained dormant.” Allocco graduated from ND and started a coaches clinic for basketball. Years later, that turned into a high school coaches job in California in Walnut Creek where he won a state championship in 1995. From there, he went to Concord De La Salle High School and won a 2nd state championship there. He would go on to win 600 games faster than any coach in the history of California and ended his 24 year coaching career 2nd all-time in winning percentage and is the only coach to win state titles with 2 different schools. Now at the University of San Francisco, Allocco is still changing young people lives, just like his coach and mentor Parseghian did at Notre Dame. He relishes his time in South Bend and tells us how he went from 9th on the depth chart to the backup. How he admired the tenacity of another player at Notre Dame just looking for a chance: Rudy Ruettiger. And how a chance meeting with an 86-year old "Angel" changed his life. 50 years ago he was the backup to the man on the cover of the 9/30/74 issue of Sports Illustrated, Tom Clements, but on the Past Our Prime podcast he's the starter and the winner. This time Roger looks back at the CanUKUS hits from the month when the movies helped make Jack Skellington and Rudy Ruettiger household names. The charts featured some bedroom boasting, reefer-fueled madness, anti-consumerist Swedish rap, an icon's first major pop hit, possibly the best disco hit of the 90s, and that song that those guys on that show did that thing to. Katie and Bridget spend 20 years trying to play football at Notre Dame as they re-watch the movie: Rudy! It's a story all about how if you have a dream, you're gonna have to work your 5-foot-nothing butt off to make it happen AND potentially become homeless along the way! Come along as we meet Rudy, a guy who's name is thankfully not actually Rudy Ruettiger. He spends his life aspiring to play football the University of Notre Dame, but faces hurdles when he doesn't have the grades, talent, or even height to make it happen right away. With a little help from his newfound hype man - aka D-Bob - Rudy gets the grades to get into the school (thankfully without having to become a priest). Rudy gets put on the team as a personality hire and soon he teaches all his teammates about what it means to be DEDICATED. At the last home game of his senior year, Rudy is given a chance to play and SPOILER ALERT HE MAKES US ALL CRY. Will Rudy be able to earn the respect he wants at the end of it all? Does Fortune's tear-jerking speech answer that question while simultaneously making us cry!? Released in 1993 (the best year for movies), it stars Jon Favreau, Ned Beatty, and Samwise the Brave himself: Sean Astin.
Against all odds, Rudy Ruettiger changed the game at Notre Dame. The 1993 film Rudy is a true story of a small-town kid from Illinois who harbored dreams of playing football at the University of Notre Dame despite significant obstacles such as his height, cognitive skills, and economic status. Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger joins Liz on the podcast to discuss how he secured a Notre Dame education and landed a position on one of the most prestigious college football teams in history. He later teases the director's cut of the film he inspired, releasing on Nov. 14th. Follow Liz on Twitter: @LizClaman Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Stewart AnsteadTake a walk with me down Fascination Street as I get to know Stewart Anstead. Stewart is an artist, more specifically a painter. In this episode, Stewart takes us on a journey of finding that thing in life that pulls you, that part of you that won't be ignored. He shares with us the path that led him from California's North Bay (Chico) to Utah (BYU), and the artistic steps along the way. We discuss the artistic value he sees in brands like: Nike, Converse, lettering, and even the human hand. Of course, we talk about such greats as: Warhol, Klimt, Picasso, Pollock, Banksy, and Bob Ross. Stewart's art is hanging in many homes & businesses, including The San Francisco Giants back offices, and comedian Adam Carolla's home. His art features the likes of: Paul Newman racecars, Shelby American, Secretariat, Rudy Ruettiger, Madison Baumgartner, and tons more. Today I'm talking about the ultimate walk-on player, Rudy Ruettiger. Rudy's journey started after witnessing the horrific death of a co-worker at the coal plant where they worked. After seeing his friend die, Rudy was overwhelmed with the feeling that it was time to chase his dreams. He quit right away and set out to attend Notre Dame and play football. He did just that and the story was turned into one of the greatest sports movies of all time. But the story of getting the movie made is even more impressive then the story told in the movie as Rudy spent 8 years trying to get his story told. Today Rudy continues to inspire millions as he travels the country speaking to people about love, kindness and taking responsibilities for your dreams. Growing up, many of us found inspiration in the 1993 film "Rudy" and its portrayal of unwavering perseverance. However, the true story of Rudy Ruettiger, the man who served as the film's inspiration, is even more motivating. Rudy's struggles in making the movie, from getting his story out to seeing the film through to completion, are far more inspiring than the finished product. Rudy grew up in a large family and idolized his hardworking father, who worked three jobs to support his family of fourteen children. Seeing the sense of pride and hope his father felt each time Notre Dame won a football game, Rudy set his sights on one day playing for the team himself. Despite facing many obstacles, Rudy remained persistent in pursuing his dreams. He applied to Notre Dame multiple times before finally being accepted, and even after that, he faced eight years of setbacks and rejections in his attempts to get his story out to the world. However, his "nothing-to-lose-attitude" and unwavering determination kept him going. Rudy's resilience and positive outlook are a testament to the power of hard work and determination. Tune in on this conversation and let it become a reminder that no matter how daunting the challenge, we should never give up on our dreams. Through Rudy's example, we can learn to embrace setbacks and turn them into opportunities to grow and persevere.

Welcome to December 16, 2022 on the National Day Calendar. Today we celebrate rooting for the underdog and the tradition of poor taste. It's an accepted fact that people love cheering for an underdog. Whether in movies or sports or movies about sports, nothing engages our emotions like watching someone win against all odds. Do you guys have a favorite underdog story? John: The 1980 Winter Olympics Hockey Team. Miracle on Ice. Marlo: I grew up watching Underdog as a kid. John: Oh, it was such a great cartoon. Why can't you find Underdog in reruns? Anna: I don't know but what's the story about that guy Rudy, that movie? John: Notre Dame football, Rudy Ruettiger. Marlo: That's a great story too. We have plenty of them actually. Lots of underdogs. On National Underdog Day, celebrate your favorite unlikely hero that inspires you to go the distance. Anna: Marlo, what's with that outfit? Marlo: Well, what? That's an interesting outfit you have. Anna: John, back me up. Are you color blind, Marlo? I don't know what's going on with you there. Marlo: I'm not sure either, actually. John: The lights and glitter are an interesting touch. Marlo: Maybe that's why I can't see so well right now. Hang on a second. Let me dim the lights a little. John: Wait a second, is that panel on the front an advent calendar?! Anna: That's what it is. Marlo, are you celebrating Ugly Sweater Day by any chance? Marlo: Ta Da! Anna: Okay. Well it's that time of year when some people have parties to raise money for charity or Toys for Tots donations with an ugly sweater dress code. On National Ugly Christmas Sweater Day show your holiday spirit with something fun and hideous. I'm Anna Devere and I'm Marlo Anderson. Thanks for joining us as we Celebrate Every Day. In this week's edition of the Hey Reb Podcast with Tony Cordasco and Joe Arrigo, the guys preview the Rebels game against Notre Dame on Saturday. They are joined by Rudy Ruettiger to talk all things Fighting Irish, recap the Air Force game, they take your questions and much more.
Against all odds on a gridiron in South Bend, Indiana, Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger carved his name into history books as perhaps the most inspiring graduate of the University of Notre Dame. As fans cheered "RU-DY!, RU-DY!," (which is now considered to be the underdog chant of a lifetime) this "five-foot nothin', a hundred and nothin' … without a speck of athletic ability", sacked the quarterback in the last 27 seconds of the only play in the only game of his college football career. He is the first player in the school's history to be carried off the field on the shoulders of his teammates. As the son of an oil refinery worker and third of 14 children, Rudy rose from valleys of discouragement and despair to the pinnacles of success. It took years of fierce determination to overcome obstacles and criticisms, yet Rudy achieved his first dream - to attend Notre Dame and play football for the Fighting Irish. In 1993, TRISTAR Productions immortalized Rudy's life story with the blockbuster film, RUDY. Written and directed by Angelo Pizzo and David Anspaugh, the award-winning team who brought us HOOSIERS, the critically acclaimed RUDY received "Two Thumbs Up" from Siskel and Ebert, is considered one of the "Most Inspirational Movies of All Time" by Fandango, IMDB, Ranker and countless other websites. USA TODAY ranked RUDY as the #1 "Best Football Movie of All Time." The film continues to inspire millions worldwide. Today, Rudy Ruettiger is an Emmy Award Winning Motivational Keynote Speaker, author, and producer with over 25 years of Experience speaking to Corporations, Universities, Sports Teams, and Special Events. His Captivating personality and powerful message of "NEVER QUIT" and "YES I CAN" comes from his personal experiences of adversity and triumph and lasts a lifetime. Time and time again, Rudy's appearances receive thunderous applause and standing ovations as he inspires groups of 200 to 20,000 around the world. Recently, Rudy offered his message in his orginal production, DREAM BIG: Rudy Ruettiger Live on Broadway, presented at the Samuel Friedman Theatre, along with his daughter Jessica Noel Ruettiger who made her Broadway debut performing her original song, "This Is My Dream" in the show's finale. Dream Big has plans to tour to other cities including Chicago, Boston, and Las Vegas. In Celebration of the 25th ANNIVERSARY of the Movie RUDY, the film was presented on the big screen at the Microsoft Theatre in LA while the Famous Hollywood Orchestra performed the film's musical score live in perfect time during a sold-out screening of the film. Rudy's candid nature and willingness to connect with every person he meets with a bold, refreshing and relevant message has poised him to exemplify his message in his real life, over-coming obstacles, persevering through adversity and making every second count. He is a willing, able and inspirational speaker who is looking forward to being a part of your next event. Millions have been inspired by the movie RUDY, now let the man behind the movie inspire you! https://www.rudyruettiger.com/ #collegefootball #notredame #rudymovie

His story was told in a 1993 motion picture that USA Today ranked as the number one "Best Football Movie of All Time," centering on his time trying to get into Notre Dame and on their football team, and eventually into a game against Georgia Tech when he sacked the quarterback with less than 30 seconds to play in the game. He is a U.S. Navy Vietnam Veteran and has gone on to be a motivational keynote speaker, including having spoken at the White House under two presidents. He has co-authored several books and offered his message in his original production live on Broadway. He also is the co-founder of the Rudy Foundation.
In this episode we're talking cryptocurrencies. But I guess who isn't talking about crypto these days, right? Crypto is the future! Crypto is over! What the heck even is crypto...?!? While we might debate what's in store for crypto currencies, one thing that's undeniable is the impact that they've had on sports marketing. Crypto firms have been everywhere in sports, running super bowl ads, renaming arenas, partnering with athletes… seems like every time you went to watch a game, there was another crypto company. And then the bottom appeared to fall out of the market. So what's next for crypto companies and sports? How are their sports marketing strategies changing? Are they even looking for new opportunities? To help us answer these questions and more, we're talking with Sina Nader, Head of Partnerships for FTX US. FTX has been one of the most active and visible crypto businesses in sports, partnering with leagues, athletes, facilities, and colleges. We'll dive into his history with crypto and where he sees things headed, both in terms of the industry, and their partnerships in sports. Sina also shares one of the greatest walk on stories since Rudy Ruettiger donned a golden helmet for Notre Dame.
Two of Iowa football's greatest are on this year's college hall of fame ballot. OT Robert Gallery and Tight End Dallas Clark are among 80 players and 9 coaches nominated by the National Football Foundation. Voting concludes the end of June and we'll know who's in this years class the end of December. Both Gallery and Clark were consensus All Americans from small town Iowa. Both were highly coveted 1st round Nfl draft picks, Gallery #2 over-all by the Oakland Raiders. Clark was chosen with the 24th selection by the Indianapolis Colts. Born in Sioux Falls and growing up in Livermore in Northern, Iowa, population 380, Dallas Clark would wear his Incredible Hulk pajama's most of the day if allowed. Folks in Humboldt county had no idea then that Clark would grow into the Nfl's version of the short tempered Dr. Bruce Banner. Clark played a mad blocker and pass catcher at Iowa for a couple years and then for 11 seasons as QB Payton Manning's main target, winning a Super Bowl along the way. While Dallas Clark loved Marvel comics super hero's he settled for a Rudy Ruettiger role. Rudy was turned down three times by Notre Dame before he was allowed to walk on, Dallas Clark arrived in Iowa City in 1999 wide eyed and with out a scholarship offer but determined to work his way into a Hawkeye uniform. The rest is material that books and movies are made of. Dallas Clark joins us on this week's Fight for Iowa podcast.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

If you saw the movie "Rudy" than you know all about our guest "Rudy Ruettiger" who did what some feel was the impossible. Standing only 5'6" and weighing a mere 165 lbs. Rudy talked himself onto the Notre Dame football team. Although he was placed on the scout team, a squad that helps the varsity team practice for games, Rudy was never meant to actual play in a Notre Dame football game. However on Nov. 8, 1975, on the last game of Rudy's senior season, with only one play left in the game....Rudy was put in to play....the rest is history. We visited with Rudy in studio and found him to be a wonderful person whose determination and courage are awe inspiring. Photo courtesy of: Student Union Sports
My guest today, Rudy Ruettiger, exemplifies what it means to have the deep resilience and persistence needed to make a dream come true. For those who are not familiar with Rudy Ruettiger, his life story was made into a major motion Hollywood sports film in 1993 and to this day, nearly 30 years later, still stands as one of the most inspiring sports movies out there. In fact, in the words of the late, great Kobe Bryant: “If Rudy could accomplish what he did without being blessed with the physical talent to play football at that level, what could I accomplish if I worked as hard as he did? After watching that movie, I decided that I would always work as if I'm the last man on the team that had everything to prove.”Kobe describes Rudy as being the one person who's had the biggest influence on his life and he literally broke down in tears the day he met Rudy in person letting him know what a difference he made in his life and career. As well, 4 US presidents were so moved by the movie that they wrote hand written letters to Rudy himself. The 4 presidents were both Bushes, Bill Clinton and Barrack Obama. Rudy Ruettiger was an undersized walk on who earned a spot for two years on the Notre Dame Fighting Irish football team in the 1974 and 1975 seasons. Although he did not dress for games, he was given the opportunity to put on the uniform and dress in the last home game of his senior year in 1975 and got in the game in the the closing minute to record his first ever tackle in the final moments of the game. The final scene of this movie is a moving tribute to who Rudy was and why he was so loved. His story, however, is about so much more than football which is why Hollywood and Notre Dame deeply supported the making of this movie. Full disclosure here, as a college football player myself back in Canada in the 1990s, I was an undersized player who had to work very myself to have a chance to be starting quarterback and punter for my university team. The movie Rudy was a great inspiration to me at the time and taught me that I needed to push myself even harder to be the best I could be with the talent I possessed. In our episode today, Rudy and I talk about what it was like for him growing up in the family of 14 brothers and sisters, the loss of his best friend which ultimately sparked his desire to quit his job and move to South Bend Indiana to make the Notre Dame dream happen, and we also talk about his spirituality and the desire he has to make a difference in the world by sharing his story. We also chat about Hollywood actor Sean Astin who played his character in the movie and how he and Sean collaborated in order for Sean to do the very best he could in the role of Rudy in the movie. I was super excited to record this podcast with Rudy, but due to technical difficulties and a poor internet connection, there were a number of glitches that prevented us from recording the entire interview. After editing, I managed to capture only 17 minutes of our 40 minute conversation but there are still some gems in there.
