It's time for a rather chunky section of a damaged play. We have the end of this play, known as Good Order, or Old Christmas. Printed by William Rastell in 1533, it covers the conclusion of a play about how an excess of good cheer over Christmas can be a bad thing. Hint, hint. Yes, you. PUT THE MINCED PIE DOWN! The Pudcast returns with co-hosts Korey Maas (Lutheran), Miles Smith (Anglican), and D. G. Hart (Presbyterian) in the after glow of a very long holiday season -- that seems to get longer the older the observer becomes. The recording starts with question of whether the five to six weeks between Thanksgiving and New Years -- when everyone seems to return to pandemic levels of output in the workplace -- is too long. Included is attention to the particular aspects of holiday observance among Lutherans and Anglicans (with Lutherans getting lots of credit for using the phrase, "The Divine Service" most often). Material that stimulated the discussion was Ross Douthat's speculation that secular liberalism has run out of steam and Eli Lake's report on the Jewish-Americans who wrote so many of the secular Christmas songs. Listeners who have not seen Whit Stillman's movie, "Metropolitan" should do so asap even if it is no longer Christmas or Advent or Debutante Ball season. Owing to the recent death of former POTUS, Jimmy Carter and Donald Trump's election victory, the co-hosts also speculated about the effects of past and future presidents on the religious vibe in the United States and elsewhere. Bonus content: here is an introduction to Washington Irving's Old Christmas, a story that shaped American customs surrounding the holiday.

Moore had St. Nicholas coming on Christmas Eve, rather than Christmas Day, as did Washington Irving, in his Old Christmas series of essays. The Christmas visitor had many different influences at the time, and the popularity of this poem solidified the character of Santa Claus. Often referred to as “T'was the Night Before Christmas”, it was originally published in 1823. I remember a simple yet enchanting holiday moment—it began with my grandparents standing beside the Christmas tree. Its lights were glowing gently in the early evening, and the house carried that pleasant hush that settles in once the day's bustle has quieted down. They leaned toward me and said, “Squint your eyes, and you'll see the lights better.” Naturally, as a curious child, I obliged. In an instant, those bright points of color blurred into radiant halos, as if each bulb had become a tiny star in its universe. It felt like stepping into a world shaped by whispers and warm glances, where small acts—like narrowing your eyes—could turn the ordinary into something magical... In this episode I explore the influence of author Washington Irving on Christmas traditions in the Victorian era in Michigan. Washington Irving, more well known for his stories 'The Legend of Sleepy Hollow' and 'Rip Van Winkle' also was quite passionate about writing stories about Christmas. He is often regarded as the one who laid the foundation for many Christmas traditions that are still kept today in America, with his famous essay 'Old Christmas'. In this episode, Mary and Emma discuss the meaning of January 6th as the Feast of Epiphany. According to the Christian Liturgical Calendar, this day commemorates the three Magi's visit to the scene of the nativity and marks the end of the Christmas season. In the Appalachian tradition, Epiphany was known as "Little Christmas" or "Old Christmas," hearkening back to Old World traditions of extending the Christmas season over 12 days as an extended period of celebration and rest, ending with "Little Christmas" on January 6th. This episode concludes with Mary's telling of an Epiphany story from Italy, the Legend of Old Befana, which is a replay from two years ago.
