Send us a textWhat makes a Christmas song timeless? We set ourselves a deceptively hard challenge: pick the single most iconic holiday track from each decade, starting with the 1960s and ending in the 2010s, then fuse them into one perfect album side. Right away a pattern emerged—so many beloved songs weren't immediate smashes. They took years to climb, re-entered charts as rules changed, and found new life through radio, TV specials, movies, and, later, streaming. We start with Darlene Love's Christmas (Baby Please Come Home), released on the day of JFK's assassination and later crowned by time, then square it against Burl Ives' Holly Jolly Christmas, seared into memory by Rankin/Bass. In the 70s, Lennon and Ono's Happy Xmas reframed the “Christmas song” as purposeful protest while McCartney's Simply Having A Wonderful Christmas Time perfected the carefree synth sleigh-ride. The 80s deliver spectacle and sentiment: Band Aid's Do They Know It's Christmas birthed charity supergroups and Live Aid, while Wham's Last Christmas kept quietly climbing until it nearly topped the chart four decades later. The 2000s were a tougher hunt, but they showcase platform power. Faith Hill's Where Are You Christmas rides the Grinch soundtrack into perennial status as Britney's My Only Wish (This Year) evolves from TRL-era fluff to streaming favorite. Then the 2010s give us precision nostalgia: Kelly Clarkson's Underneath The Tree, crafted with Greg Kurstin to echo Phil Spector's wall of sound, stands shoulder to shoulder with Mariah Carey's All I Want For Christmas Is You, the modern juggernaut that finally reached No. 1 decades after release and returns every year like clockwork.By the end, we've got a front-to-back holiday playlist with a story: how classics are born, forgotten, revived, and ultimately adopted as tradition. Hit play, then tell us your decade winners, the sleepers we missed, and the holiday deep cuts you swear by. If you enjoy the show, follow, share with a friend, and leave a quick review—it helps more listeners find their new favorite December soundtrack. One idea. Six songs. Infinite possibilities...

Send us a message, so we know what you're thinking!A quick final episode to see out the year!  Christmas is many things to many people.  To us, it's a chance to talk about themed music, or, in this case, movies that fit the theme.  We talk about Phil Spector's “A Christmas gift for You”, which is nowhere near as bad as it could be with that title.  Elsewhere in Rolling Stone's 25 Greatest Xmas Albums, (which lives up to the terrible standard set by all their other “Greatest”), Elvis ranks below Phil Spector, The Carpenters wish us Season's Greetings and Weezer's “A Weezer Christmas” ranks below 2012's “Christmas Joy in Latvia – Latvian Christmas Cantatas”.    If you've never heard of Red Peter, you're probably lucky, as the song titles on his, “It's a Red Peter's Xmas” contain gems like, “It's Christmas & you're Sucking My Balls!”  So tasteful!  As Kiss' Ace Frehley is now “Knockin' on Heaven's Door”, we look at a few of the many times those happy Kiss guys had disagreements.    For a change, we look at IMDB's list of the Top 10 Christmas movies.  No real surprises, but it'll bring joy to your heart & a tear to your eye.   See you on the last Sunday in January for our first episode of 2026. Enjoy the playlist. Xmas Playlist! References:  Red Peter, Red Peter's Naughty Christmas, 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, Robert Dimery, A Christmas Gift for You, Phil Spector, The Ronettes, The Crystals, Darlene Love. GRAMMY® Winner, Rock n Roll Hall of Fame Inductee! Happy Holiday's, Merry Christmas!! Featured in the Academy Award Winning Documentary "20 Feet from Stardom", Darlene Has done a LOT!! #1 Hit Make, Actress on Stage & in Motion Picture Blockbusters like the "Lethal Weapon" Movies Rolling Stone Magazine has proclaimed Darlene Love to be “one of the greatest singers of all time” and that certainly rings true, but perhaps Paul Shaffer says it even more concisely: “Darlene Love is Rock N' Roll!” From her first number #1 Hit,"He's A Rebel", through her string of label hits with legendary producer Phil Spector, including "Da Doo Ron Ron", "He's Sure The Boy I Love & "Christmas Baby Please Come Home" a classic she sangs every Christmas season on the "Late Show with David Letterman (it is David's favorite). Darlene on Lead Vocals #1 Hit ~ "He's a Rebel" ~ The Crystals #10 Hit ~ "He's Sure the Boy I Love" ~ The Crystals Darlene solo ~ "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" In December 2010, Rolling Stone Magazine ranked "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" first on its list of The Greatest Rock and Roll Christmas Song, saying that "nobody can match Love's emotion and sheer vocal power." Several of the classic hit song's she sings backup on: Sam Cooke's ~ "Chain Gang", Bobby "Boris" Pickett ~ "The Monster Mash" "(You're My) Soul and Inspiration" ~ The Righteous Brothers "Walking In The Rain" ~ The Ronettes The Beach Boys ~ "In My Room" "Poor Side of Town" ~ Johnny Rivers "Rock and Roll Lullaby" ~ B.J. Thomas "Let Us Pray" ~ Elvis Presley "Get It Right" ~ Luther Vandross And many other top 10 hits of the Rock n Roll Era. Her voice is on countless songs she sang backup on for artists like Sam Cooke, Elvis Presley, Dionne Warwick, Cher, Luther Vandross and Aretha Franklin. One of Darlene's biggest fans is "The "Boss" Bruce Springsteen. She has proven herself a talented actress as well, on stage and screen, starring as Danny Glover's wife in all of the LETHAL WEAPON films and lighting-up Broadway in such musicals as GREASE and the Tony-award nominated LEADER OF THE PACK. Darlene Love was just a high school sophomore in Los Angeles when she was discovered out of a gospel choir, and asked to join a burgeoning girl group called The Blossoms, who began recording for Phil Specter. Soon thereafter, other artists like Sam Cooke were attracted to her powerful sound, and sought Darlene on their recordings. With The Blossoms and Bob B. Soxx and the Blue Jeans, Darlene sang lead vocals on some of the greatest music hits of the 60's. The Blossoms landed a weekly spot on the landmark television series SHINDIG & Elvis's 1968 Comeback Special and through the 60's and 70's, Darlene continued to perform with and back-up such diverse artists as The Beach Boys, The Mamas & The Papas, Tom Jones, The Righteous Brothers and Sonny & Cher. She has received great national press exposure, including a feature in PEOPLE magazine, a CNN television documentary on her life, and bookings on numerous national television programs, including NBC-TV's TODAY, Wendy Williams, CW and Oprah as her yearly stint on the David Letterman show which she has done 26 years strong. Ken Kessler from Sounds of Christmas and I dive into the wonderfully odd “Motown Merry Christmas!” From the Temptations to Smokey Robinson, this one celebrates Christmas the Motown way…with several non-Motown acts?!Hosted by Miami Vice's Philip Michael Thomas, the special begins with a version of “‘Twas the Night Before Christmas.” The Temptations then sell it hard with a rendition of “White Christmas” à la The Drifters. After the Pointer Sisters nail “Santa Claus is Comin' to Town,” Santa Redd Foxx and elf Marsha Warfield provide some comedy. Following that, Ronnie Spector and Darlene Love sing a Christmas medley with awkward transitions between each song. They kill it so hard, though! Great stuff!Desiree Coleman, Smokey Robinson, and Natalie Cole wow the audience with soulful carols. Of course, the Temptations sing “Silent Night.” There's more comedy bits with Foxx and Warfield, then Run DMC and Stephanie Mills get turns to provide holiday music. It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas and can you hear what I hear? I hear it's after Thanksgiving now and I need to fit in some retro review of movies that could really be Christmas movies, just in an action movie's clothing. In this episode, we find “Lethal Weapon” first under the Christmas tree. I mean, the movie has a Christmas song playing over its opening credits for God sakes! “Lethal Weapon” was a surprise action hit in 1987 that paired Mel Gibson with Danny Glover as L.A. detectives Riggs and Murtaugh. The movie started a trend of hundreds of copycat buddy-cop movies faster than Santa deliver presents on Christmas. The “fun” starts in the movie when the daughter of an old Vietnam buddy of Murtaugh's is found dead. As Riggs and Murtaugh investigate into the death further, they uncover a network of bad little elves delivering drugs from overseas for all the bad little boys and girls. All this happening while Murtaugh has to deal with Riggs' reckless, death wish behavior over the death of his wife. Have a Holly Jolly Christmas with this movie! Is this a Christmas movie? Find out on this episode of Movies Merica! “Lethal Weapon” also stars Gary Busey, Mitchell Ryan, Tom Atkins, Darlene Love, Traci Wolfe, Jackie Swanson, Damon Hines, Ebonie Smith, Mary Ellen Trainor, Steve Kahan, Jack Thibeau, Grand L. Darlene Love's 1963 classic “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” remains one of the most beloved holiday songs of all time, but it wasn't an instant hit. Produced by Phil Spector, the track eventually found success thanks to its heartfelt lyrics and Love's powerful performance, though it took years to catch on. Its release was also overshadowed by the tragic timing of the JFK assassination, which happened on the same day the album came out. Still, the song proves that truly great music always finds a way, and this week, Chris DeMakes and Chris Fafalios explore its backstory, creation, and the musical magic that has kept it a holiday staple for six decades. The Crystals hit number one with their version of Gene Pitney's ‘He's a Rebel' on 3rd November, 1962, but it was actually another of Phil Spector's girl-groups, The Blossoms, who had recorded the song. The two groups never even met, until awkwardly posing together for Spector's iconic Christmas album cover. Lead singer Darlene Love, realising her $5,000 fee was a fraction of what the song had made, demanded royalties - leading Spector to turn his attention to The Ronettes instead… Arion, Rebecca and Olly discover how the success of He's A Rebel led to Spector's absurd 10-minute “swan song” Let's Do the Screw, a parting blow to his business partners; explain why Love changed her name by deed poll; and consider how Spector's “Wall of Sound” Spector created a major impact, but at the expense of his artists' well-being… Further Reading: • 'Darlene Love Remembers Phil Spector, Their Thorny Relationship' (Billboard, 2021): https://www.billboard.com/music/music-news/darlene-love-remembers-phil-spector-9512712/ • ‘The Voices Of Black Women Were Essential To Phil Spector's Wall Of Sound' (NPR, 2021): https://www.npr.org/2021/01/21/959057719/the-voices-of-black-women-were-essential-to-phil-spectors-wall-of-sound • ‘The Crystals - He's a Rebel' (Philles, 1962): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=waRbcqP4cUI Love the show? What's up, dudes? “Gremlins” is a classic holiday horror, made better by Jerry Goldsmith's score and the killer hits of Michael Sembello and Peter Gabriel. Kevin Williams from ‘Tis the Soundtrack joins me to really dig into a couple of cues from the “Gremlins” score and dish about music theory of it all as well.We first get into the mega madness with the Sembello track. Played during the bar scene, the uptempo dance song set the stage for the “Maniac”-like antics of the dancing green creature. The film also features a track by Quarterflash and Darlene Love's epically classic “Christmas.”Goldsmith's penchant for atonality shines forth in the frantic cue ‘No Santa Claus.' The Stravinsky-esque eighths are composed of dueling tritones E-Bb and D-Ab and immediately transition to alternating bars of 5/8 and 7/8. Subsequently, all this segues quite nicely into held sonorities overlaid with “Silent Night” as Kate begins her tale of holiday woe. Talk about harmonization!Altered mystic chord? Check. Catchy mogwai theme? Got it. Synthesizer? Yes, but only if there's 7 different types! So grab your Roland Jupiter-6, join the orchestra, and play along to this episode all about the “Gremlins” score and soundtrack!‘Tis the SoundtrackYouTube: @TisTheSoundtrackIG:  @tisthesoundtrackNicolas Delage solving the mystery of Gizmo's voice!Be sure to check out the brilliant publication of Goldsmith's work by Chris Siddall, which made this analysis possible. Give us a buzz! Another year, another Christmas Special! We've scraped the barrel of festive ideas and selected Love Actually, the "greatest Christmas movie of all time", as the unfortunate premise of this year's audio horrorshow. In this edition, Ross G will be asking questions that are very loosely based on the Richard Curtis classic, with answers from Ross D, Anna and Owen. Including: In Love Actually, grumpy husband Alan Rickman gets into trouble when he buys a necklace for a woman who isn't his wife. If you were to buy a gold necklace for another profession, other than L&D, what would it be and why? Creepy romantic Andrew Lincoln spends Love Actually pining after Keira Knightley: The wife of his best friend. What aspect of L&D do you secretly love, but know that you can never be involved with? Spurned husband Colin Firth spends Love Actually learning Portuguese to be with the woman he loves. What L&D language do you plan on spending the Christmas season learning? Aging rocker Bill Nighy performs his single 'Christmas Is All Around Me' naked on TV, to celebrate it taking the Christmas Number 1 spot. What's your great ambition for 2025? During the discussion, Ross D referenced our newsletter 'Every learning intervention you design should be award-worthy' Ross G referenced the Mitchell & Webb sketch 'Are we the baddies?' Anna recommended our 'critical thinking' Skill Bite course. The papers Anna discussed were: Carter, J. W., & Youssef-Morgan, C. (2022). Psychological capital development effectiveness of face-to-face, online, and Micro-learning interventions. Education and Information Technologies, 27(5), 6553-6575. Carpenter, S. K., Pan, S. C., & Butler, A. C. (2022). The science of effective learning with spacing and retrieval practice. Nature Reviews Psychology, 1(9), 496-511. In 'What I Learned This Week', Ross D revealed a shocking truth about Darlene Love's 'All Alone On Christmas'. Ross G recommended A Christmas Carol, as read by Hugh Grant. To celebrate the sixtieth anniversary of the Beatles' first appearance on the Ed Sullivan Show, our guests revisit the evening that the Beatles graced their living rooms for the first time, on this special episode of Everything Fab Four. These Beatles lovers include Steven van Zandt from Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band, R&B singer Darlene Love, actor Billy Bob Thornton, and even one lucky audience member from that first Ed Sullivan performance. It's almost impossible to imagine what it was like to be at ground zero of American Beatlemania on February 7, 1964, when the group landed at New York City's John F. Kennedy International Airport, which had been renamed some fifty days earlier in honor of the fallen leader. The band's Pan Am flight was met with the screams and fanfare of some 5,000 people, whom the Beatles claimed to have heard—incredible as it may seem—even as the plane was taxiing along the runway.  As writer Stephen Glynn presciently remarked, “The spirit of Camelot, shot down in Dallas, Texas, had flown over from Liverpool, England, and the unprecedented euphoria that greeted the group seemed part of an expiation, a nation shaking itself out of its grief and mourning.” There is little question that the Beatles' timing in the history of the United States was uncanny, as well as a welcome respite from the national malaise, but one cannot overlook the power of marketing in a new media era unlike any that the postwar world had ever seen.  Capitol Records had saturated the city with posters announcing, “The Beatles Are Coming,” while New York's WMCA and WINS radio stations had given away T-shirts—and, rumor has it, $1 each—to thousands of teenagers who greeted the Beatles that Friday afternoon on the JFK tarmac. Released in December 1963 by Capitol, “I Want to Hold Your Hand” had sold more than one million copies by mid-January, an astounding feat for a group that had been largely unheard of on American shores scarcely a month before.  On Sunday, February 9, the Beatles launched into a spirited rendition of “All My Loving” to begin their set on the Ed Sullivan Show before some 73 million television viewers, a figure that accounted for nearly 40 percent of the population of the United States at that time. It was popular music's big bang, and like that incredible instance in the birth of the universe some 13 billion years ago, it is still resonating. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/everythingfabfour/support

Carey also may or may not have had a contentious fling with Eminem. Most recently, in a bid to assert her "Queen of Christmas" status, she engaged in a social media feud with singer Darlene Love. In this episode, we'll explore Carey's penchant for high-profile feuds—with divas, lovers, and others in her orbit—and unpack why we are "Obsessed" with this diva and all her drama.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.
