Here is my holiday episode! This year has been tough for a lot of people and the divisive climate we are in as we head into 2025 isn't going to improve right away. A lot of people I am talking to are feeling less than festive these days and are experiencing a lot of dread and anxiety. So, to try to have a happy holiday and new year I have brought in a professional to help us. Peter Bolland is an author and professor of philosophy and humanities at Southwestern College in Chula Vista, California where he has taught world religions, Asian philosophy, world mythology, and ethics for 34 years. I wanted to find out what the world spiritual traditions have to say about peace on earth and good will toward men- especially when we are not feeling it. Peter shares his views on ways to handle uncomfortable feelings as well as uncomfortable conversations. This isn't a “political” episode although we do talk about the current climate we are in. The idea is to try to move forward in times of great division and find ways to access common ground. That is my intent, and I hope it is accepted in that way. The featured radio show presents a unique holiday anthology, combining elements of mystery, nostalgia, and the supernatural, delivered through captivating storytelling and immersive soundscapes. Setting the stage for a chilling yet festive atmosphere, the show invites listeners to embrace the spectral charm of the season while enjoying an eclectic mix of narratives revolving around familial bonds, unexpected occurrences, and the perennial question of fate versus free will. The first story begins with a festive backdrop of holiday travelers contending with a severe snowstorm. A couple, Joan and Skip Bartram, embark on a long-awaited journey to visit family for Christmas after being away for years. As their excitement builds for a family reunion, they take an unmarked detour down a desolate highway, unaware that the road leads them to an eerie ghost town devoid of people. The unexpected adventure unfolds with their car crashing, prompting them to seek refuge in an ominous hotel that becomes a vessel of suspense and mystery. As the atmosphere grows increasingly tense and surreal, they encounter a seemingly kind but enigmatic local woman, Mrs. McGinnis, whose behavior hints at something darker stirring within the town's haunting silence.Transitioning into the second half of the show, the narratives shift to more intimate, character-driven tales. With the simplistic charm of holiday gatherings and the somber tones of realization and reflection, a deeper exploration of familial ties emerges. The characters grapple with their pasts, past decisions, and the sometimes burdensome weight of expectations, all under the looming shadow of Christmas. A distinctive thread emerges through the stories as characters ponder the nature of their existence, their roles within their families, and the supernatural forces at work that seem to dictate their destinies. The classic elements of mystery—secret legacies, inexplicable sightings, and the question of generational curses—play out through richly drawn interactions, leading to poignant moments of revelation. As unforeseen consequences unwind, characters draw closer to their truths, discovering what truly matters as they navigate the complexities of their fates. In a powerful thematic conclusion, the final narrative emphasizes notions of redemption, sacrifice, and the cyclical nature of giving and accepting love. By weaving through chilling circumstances and existential reflections, listeners are left to ponder the connections that bind us, the memories we cherish, and the bonds that linger beyond the grave. The show ultimately invites an introspective look at the essence of the holiday spirit, reminding us of the bittersweet truths of life, love, and loss while leaving listeners with a lingering sense of mystery and wonder. The multifaceted storytelling style employed throughout the radio show serves as a reminder of the rich tapestry of human experience during the holidays, juxtaposing warmth and light against cold and darkness. In the end, the enigmatic nature of fate and familial ties encapsulates the essence of the season—reminding all that the unknown may hold hidden gifts, even in the most chilling of circumstances.

Michael and Rob welcome David May back to the show to discuss this year's Holiday Spirit movie. For us, Holiday Spirit films are undeniably about Christmas, but without any fantastical or magical elements. And this one is Office Christmas Party starring Jason Bateman, Olivia Munn, TJ Miller, Jennifer Aniston, and Kate McKinnon, while also featuring Courtney B Vance, Rob Corddry, Randall Park, Sam Richardson, Da'Vine Joy Randolph, Jillian Bell, Vanessa Bayer, Karan Soni, and Jamie Chung.
In this festive episode of Wise_N_Nerdy, Charles, Joe, and Kurt are thrilled to welcome the incredibly talented Olivia Dunkley to the show. The laughter and camaraderie kick off with the traditional "Question of the Week," asking, “What's your favorite holiday food? Alternate: most hated holiday food?” The unanimous punching bag? Fruitcake. As the group reminisces about their most cherished holiday meals, it becomes clear that these dishes are more than food—they're memories shared with loved ones. With the roll of the dice, the "Parliament of Papas" segment takes center stage, tackling the evergreen debate: artificial vs. real Christmas trees. The crew also explores the cozy joy of matching Christmas pajamas, sparking laughs and heartwarming anecdotes about family traditions. Next up is the fan-favorite "Daddy Tell Me a Story" segment. Olivia dazzles with tales from her movie production days, recounting a hilarious mishap involving a scene meant to feature horses—but with only one horse on set, the team had to improvise. Her resilience and creativity shine through, offering a behind-the-scenes look at the challenges and joys of filmmaking. The dice deliver more laughs with animal-themed bad dad jokes submitted by listener Devocite, followed by some listener feedback that keeps the conversation rolling. In the "What Are You Nerding Out About?" segment, passions abound. Charles shares his love for building puzzles with his wife, while Olivia nerds out about the joys and challenges of parenting. Kurt is captivated by the artistry of Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, and Joe is diving into King's Avatar season 3 while reliving the magic of Home Alone 1 & 2 with his kids. The show rounds out with the "How Do I...?" segment, where the hosts share insights on how parents can make the most of their weekends. So, whether you're a fan of nerdy banter, heartfelt parenting stories, or Olivia Dunkley's incredible behind-the-scenes anecdotes, this episode invites you to "Find your FAMdom" and celebrate what makes the holidays—and fandoms—so special. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/wise-n-nerdy/support
