True House Stories Podcast with special guests by Lenny Fontana
TRUE HOUSE STORIES® W/ JOVONN # 121 INTERVIEWED BY LENNY FONTANA A native of Brooklyn and current resident of Queens (New York), Jovonn has been active in the music scene since the age of 10. Supported by his mother, a keyboard player; and father, a guitar/bass player, who were aspiring R&B singers; he was nurtured with a solid musical foundation. Jovonn began his career as a Hip-Hop DJ at the age of 14 and started spinning records at those infamous New York block parties of the 80s where he was introduced to the growing New York House music scene, hanging out in seminal Brooklyn clubs such as Sapphires, Club Saturn and Club Serene. Years later clubs such as The Loft, The Choice, Snobbusters and Zanzibar, solidified his full commitment to House music. Exploding onto the house scene in 1991 with his second release, “Turn and Runaway” on Warner Bros. Records, (which reached number 10 on the Billboard chart and catapulted Jovonn on to the global scene) He then went on to set up his first record label, Goldtone Records, in the early 1990's via Emotive Records (label compilation dropped on clone last year) and since then has produced more than 500 records in the House, R&B, Hip-Hop and Neo Soul genres, not to mention film scores and soundtracks although his true love has always been House music. A pioneer of the NYC, New Jersey, 90's house sound, he's produced many classics with releases such as as “Back In the Dark”, “Garage Shelter”, “I Can't Make Up My Mind”, “I Wanna Go To A Club” that all contain Jovonn's distinctive vocal delivery and trade mark production, as the man says himself ‘gritty sounds, hard kicks, jazzy chords and a phat bassline'. Other releases in Jovonn's impressive discography include ‘Something About this Love' (on WestEnd Records), “The Spirit” album (on Track Mode), and the “Blaque House” album on Code Red. More recently he's delivered releases on prestigious labels such as Dogmatik, Objektivity, Deeply Rooted House and Apollonia, showcasing his talents to a new audience of house music lovers. Jovonn launched his new label venture Body N'Deep in 2017 via clone distribution, dedicated to releasing the hottest deep and raw underground house tracks from Jovonn and his crew of producers and vocalists including tracks from legendary artists such as Karizma, Delano Smith and Louie Vega. His recent album ‘Timeless' was released and received great reviews from DJ's and Press, showcasing Jovonn's trademark new jersey sound. Look out for a busy release schedule throughout 2020 on Body N'Deep and a new Jovonn album later in the year.

Filsonik has a history deeply rooted in the iconic world of New York club music and evolved as a DJ / producer out of a rich NYC house community. Born and raised in the Lower East Side, he grew up on hip hop, latin disco, and reggae music. He was schooled from age seven as a classical pianist and as such his influences are both street and formal. His childhood neighbors were John Mateo and Eddie Matos, producers on one of the UK’s foremost deep house labels Glasgow Underground and Joe Claussell’s Spiritual Life Music. His first experience of house music was with them in the early 90’s when they asked him to play sessions keys on one of their early tracks. His career as a producer and DJ took off in 2006 under the umbrella of New York’s veteran house DJ, Timmy Regisford of Club Shelter, a legendary weekly soulful / deep house event that ran for fifteen years. Filsonik’s signature drum programming sound which is quintessentially Latin, rhythmic but yet low-fi appears on many Regisford tracks of that period. Co-productions on Shelter’s label Unrestricted Tracks and Restricted Tracks with Regisford including “Can U” (Unrestricted Access Records), “Basic Track” (Restricted Access Records) and “Movement” (Restricted Tracks Records) set the bar for gritty, underground New York deep house of the mid 2000’s. His remix of Alicia Key’s “POW” (Restricted Access Records) crystalized the sound of New York vocal house circa the mid 2000’s. He also saw the fruits of his labor appear on Osunlade’s Yoruba Records with Nadirah Shakoor “Love Song Part One” (Bahsonik Remix) (Yoruba Records) which was a collaborative effort with the English jazzy house producer Bah Samba. In 2009 Argy signed the track “Diva Jaguar” for his Berlin based label These Days label and re-released the by now NYC deep house classic “Can U” as a special Argy edit. Shortly thereafter, Argy picked up a second release from Filsonik which landed on his “These Beats” compilation featuring original productions by the likes of Radio Slave and Jerome Sydenham. As a DJ, his warmups for Regisford’s mammoth 12 hour after hours sets at the club established his name within the international house community as one of the key players in the New York house scene. In 2006 he joined Dennis Ferrer’s Objektivity crew for a momentous day at New York’s MOMA PS1 series, an outdoors event widely captured on You Tube that also helped launch the careers of his close friends The Martinez Brothers. He has since participated in many Objektivity events as the official opener of the night. Circo Loco, DC10, Ibiza 2011 marked a strong comeback for New York’s Filsonik after a few quiet years spent in the environs of his home town. As a close artistic collaborator of fellow NYC Puerto Rican artists, The Martinez Brothers, he spent three months filming and traveling with the boys throughout Europe in the summer of that year. Along with The Martinez Brothers, Filsonik played two times at Circo Loco at DC10 in summer 2011 and went on to do a 2012 residency in Ibiza with additional appearances at their worldwide events. 2014 was a big year for Filsonik with releases on Jamie Jones’ Hot Creations Label with “Dogfish” as well as the summer Ibiza anthem Larosa “Something Strange” (Filsonik Remix) (Not Bad). He has tracks slated for release on both Tuskegee and Cuttin’ Headz. Filsonik is currently building the catalogue of his own label Gran Manzana with his close friend Patrick Grooves. He plays frequently alone and with The Martinez Brothers at venues and events such as BPM Festival (Mexico), Space, Miami (USA), Output, New York (USA), ReSolute, New York (USA), Spy Bar (Chicago), Stereo, Montreal (Canada), Showcase (Paris), The Arches (Glasgow), Circo Loco (Ibiza). Filsonik sums up what house music means to him in just one word ‘DANCE’ music Asking Filsonik what the House Gangster movement means to him; “The HG movement is completely refreshing deeply rooted in my opinion from the north part of the world and has been felt worldwide. The movement has been organic and special to see the succession and growth of it and now being a part of it just makes it that much more epic to see its development.” Filsonik describes the House Gangster sound as “in simple terms to me is like a great plate of sneak's food delicious..The main course is raw and dirty with a side of sexiness.” We asked Filsonik to tell us how this mix represents him as an artist, to which he replied; “This mix represents a nice variety of my favorite artists who I'm currently supporting there sound.” Finally he gives us a little special mention about this mix; “There's a few special pieces in the mix to look out for like for example look out for some new heat from my boys Harvard Bass, Bas Ibelini,Jesse Callosso to say the least got some Bomba's coming out this Summer of 2015.”
Armed with unwavering persistence, the idiosyncratic and self-critical Alex Niggemann has had a remarkable career so far, with the future still as bright as ever. Not many artists can attest to suddenly finding themselves sitting on Resident Advisor's 'Top 20 Charted Artists' after a friend submitted some of their work to labels without their approval. But this is exactly what happened to Alex, leading him to release on various labels from Audiofly’s Supernature imprint to Nick Curly‘s 8bit Records, and even establishing his own label, Soulfooled (followed by his second label, AEON, in 2013). Alex's heavy-duty Materium EP, released on Steve Bug's prolific Poker Flat, dominated the charts last year and sat in RA's Top 50 for weeks after it's initial release. Other notable releases of late include the excellent Earth Symphony EP on Sasha's Last Night on Earth, and also the hypnotic single 'Sorrow' on Watergate Recordings. For Alex's Balance Selections podcast you can look forward to some beautiful tracks from labels like Kompakt, Objektivity and Alex's own Soulfooled label en route to more darker cuts from acts like Rødhad and Barnt. It is very clear that what has been a sprawling journey for Alex to date is far from coming to an end. Right place, right time. It's an old cliché, but it's one that's been the definition of New York house legend Dennis Ferrer's musical career. Just as the dance music world was heading into the world of afro-centric house, Ferrer was there. And then, when it began to embrace the mix of tech and soul, Ferrer was there again, leading the way with his impeccable productions. And as a protege of Kerri Chandler, it makes complete sense that Ferrer's current sound lies firmly in the deep house realm laid out by his old teacher years earlier. Ferrer has brought that anything goes approach to his newest venture, Objektivity. Low slung and deep, Objektivity is a cutting-edge label in touch with its time, putting a uniquely American spin on the deep house revival that is currently making waves in Europe. And with releases from the likes of the young phenoms the Martinez Brothers (who are going from strength to strength) and classic New York house heads like Timmy Regisford and Quentin Harris, it's obvious that Ferrer doesn't regard the label as a vanity project. Objektivity is a living, breathing thing - one that's set to drop bombs on the dancefloor for years to come. So it's with great pleasure that the 6th Cablecast comes from Ferrer himself. With his Objektivity London showcase ready to drop here at Cable on 11th May, it's perfect timing for you to experience this legend at work. Enjoy! This mix was recorded live from Miami. Talk us through the equipment you use to perform on? I can recall that it was done on 2 Pioneer CDJ-2000's , A Pioneer DJ-900M Nexus Mixer and my Macbook Pro with Traktor Scratch Pro2 software. I use USB sticks in the cdj's that contain .wav controller files for controlling Traktor via the cdj's. I also have these USB sticks as a backup with a few months worth of songs just in case my laptop crashes. The show can continue on with hopefully not a hitch. If travelling constraints and venue specifications weren't an obstacle, What would your ideal gig set up be? On a beach in Aruba with a killer Funktion One sound system and with a manageable 1,000 people losing their minds dancing and cheering to the likes of us. No fashion statements...No fancy clothes or sneakers on...just a shorts and flip flops or bikini's and flip flops code allowed. You travel all over the globe to perform, is there anywhere in the world that you would say is your favourite place to play, and why? I've been asked this countless times and i used to say all these exotic countries and what not. But honestly NYC is my favourite place to play...why? Because it is my birthplace...it is where I got my start...my heart and soul..my pain and pride. When you rock it out there and see all the familiar faces and industry people that have been coming out for years smiling and having a good time...you know you've been accepted. Acceptance after all is what we're all after right? That is part of the prize in life as money isn't all it's cracked up to be some times. Your Objektivity imprint seems to have a real family vibe about it. Releases from people close to home in New York such as The Martinez Brothers and Andre Hommen. How did it all start? I very much keep to myself. Sort of a loner I'm told....lol. So on the odd occasion that I do let people in I tend to keep them close. You become part of my extended family. It's a natural progression. So usually if you're in anything having to do with objektivity it's usually because I really like you. We keep it tight and a bit exclusive. Has it taken the musical direction you expected it would? What's in store for us in the future release wise? I've never had an intentionally particular musical direction when it came to Objektivity except that i wanted our records to always be different than what's always going on. To walk that fine edge between being current and too ahead of the curve. It's always just been if I like it and it fits with what's going on in my head and somehow in our scene then yeah! what the hell let's do it. I could sit here and come up with some asinine "the spirits speak to me kind of thing" but honestly it's more of a floating butterfly effect. The sound of house music is forever changing, you are a prime example of how to stay relevant in today’s rapidly evolving scene. It seems like you have made the transition from your roots in soulful house to accommodate a more current deep sound. Have you enjoyed this journey, and where do you see the state of house music 10 years from now? This is not the first time i've done this nor will it be the last. Before my soulful house roots I had techno roots with Damon Wild and Synewave. I live this.....in order to continue living it one must evolve. Just because you get older doesn't mean the front door to the club does also. It's a challenge to keep on trying to reinvent but that's what makes life fun and interesting. People will always need dance music in some shape or form. Where will it be 10 years from now on? Who knows...but I can guarantee you that i'll be there still trying to be relevant. lol. We're very pleased to have the London leg of your Objektivity tour here at Cable. It's a great collection of artists, together, under one roof. How do you see the night unfolding? I've long ago stopped trying to be Nostradamus and offering predictions. LOL. I just know...I'm going to have fun...play records...dance...and act like I love life...because you only get one shot at it. I'll bring the music ...you bring the open mind and somewhere in the middle we'll connect and lose track of time for a while. What can we expect from your performance? How much preparation goes into your DJ gigs? I totally fly by the seat of my pants. That's what dj'ing is all about no? What's the fun in a prepped set? That's cheating on the exam! You look at the crowd...and you either guess right or you guess wrong. Guess wrong too many times and you suck....guess right the majority of the times and you're a hero. I don't like falling into the suck region too many times....it's not fun. LOL. Anything else we should know about on the horizon? Any special collaborations? The only thing you should know...is that i'm not going anywhere any time soon...lol. ------------------------------------------------ Objektivity London Showcase // Saturday 11th May // Cable, London DJs: Dennis Ferrer, Sis, Julian Perez, Andre Hommen, Jack Fell Down Click for more info / tickets
Jerome Sydenham (NGR) - NightVision Techno PODCAST 28 in Flight Techno MIx Pt. 3 Bio: Few traveling producer/DJs measure up to the legacy of Ibadan Records’ Jerome Sydenham. Nothing short of a modern music visionary who cut his teeth as an A&R rep for Atlantic Records during the peak of the 90s New York house era. Now residing in Berlin, he’s still at the cutting edge of dance music; pioneering it through its various mutations over the years. Jerome’s illustrious music career took off in the early nineties as part of an A&R team that launched the careers of legendary vocal house group Ten City, as well as pioneering house producers like Kerri Chandler, Pal Joey and Murk. His own imprint – Ibadan Records – started its journey in 1996 with a string of house music classics, including the hit rework of Nina Simone’s “See Line Woman”, produced in collaboration with long-term friend Kerri Chandler. His album Saturday – co-produced with Kerri – clearly displayed his production range and musical ability as deftly displayed on tracks like “Rising The Sun”. A timeless recording capable of working even the most finicky of dancefloors into a frenzy. By 2002, Sydenham started to move away from the sound of New York that was his roots. While vocal and afro-house prevailed in New York house clubs, Sydenham chose to represent a new era in melodic tech-house and launched his 10” Beats series. With releases like the crossover deep tech-house record “Timbuktu” and the mammoth “Sandcastles” – co-produced with Dennis Ferrer – the label marked a major turning point in the global house scene. 2006 finally saw Jerome leave New York behind for the European shores of the Danish capitol, Denmark. There he launched Avocado Records with Danish producer, Rune. Shortly thereafter he founded Apotek Records, a platform for his growing passion for techno. A move to Berlin in 2007, found Sydenham in the heart of a vibrant techno community and it was here that a musical resurrection occurred. Ostgut Ton enlisted his remix services for Len Faki’s “Rainbow Delta”, resulting in a bona fide throbbing, techno classic. Not long afterwards his “Elephant” collaboration with Danish producer Rune on Apotek rocked throughout the house and techno worlds. Riding this wave of momentum Jerome continued to craft a series of splendid remixes such as Carl Craig’s “Angel” on Planet E, Adam Beyer & Joel Mull “Forming Dies” on Drumcode, and another for Planetary Assault Systems “GT” (Function & Jerome Sydenham Remix) on Mote Evolver. Even with all this success in techno, Jerome never forgot his roots, as represented by his Kerri Chandler-esque Flora Cruz hit remix in 2009. Ravenously licensed to house compilations across multiple territories. Collaboratively, he’s been as active as ever, recently remixing Dennis Ferrer’s “The Red Room” with The Martinez Brothers on Ferrer’s Objektivity. Ibadan’s 100th release “White Light” co-produced with another NYC techno veteran – Function – has been one of the labels most sought after contemporary release. The duo also teamed up to remix “Two Ninety-One” on Chris Leibing’s CLR label. Most recently he has put his stellar A&R touch to Greek producer Argy’s full-length album “Fundamentals”, which saw the light of day on Ibadan Records last Autumn to critical acclaim. Currently, he’s developing a new Berlin based Greek artist called Quell. His touring schedule hasn’t let up, including regular appearances at Berlin’s famed Berghain and Panorama Bar, which has recently hosted an Ibadan Records showcase. One would think that there are more hours in Jerome Sydenham’s day, as with all this going, he’s still found time to produce an album. ‘Animal Social Club‘, will be dropping this fall on Ibadan Records.
