For more information on the series in 1944, please tune into Breaking Walls episode 154. On Thursday November 2nd, 1944, Van Johnson made his first appearance on “radio's outstanding theater of thrills” in “The Singing Walls.” In this Cornell Woolrich story, a man is drugged by gangsters to be framed for a crime. All he can remember is that music seemed to be coming out of the walls that surround him. Van Johnson started on Broadway in the mid-1930s and was selected as the understudy for Gene Kelly in Pal Joey. Lucille Ball got him an audition in Hollywood. From then on he was a “boy next door” handsome Hollywood star. At the time of this Suspense appearance, radio columns were commenting about the frequency of his appearances on radio's biggest programs. He was on all of the big comedy and variety shows as well as dramatic programs, often appearing on radio multiple times a week, sometimes daily, during this period of his career.

Ephraim reflects on his time dancing on Smash, his entire love of the arts beginning with his talent for dance, as well as his inspirations and influences. We cover all things Our Town - from the glorious cast, co-starring with Zoey Deutch, their trip to Peterborough, New Hampshire, and why the themes of the play are timeless. The twins get the scoop on Ephraim's Hamilton experience from early workshops all the way to Broadway, the NYCC production of Pal Joey, and starring with Ariana Grande in Hairspray Live on NBC. Ephraim was an original Newsie, made his Broadway debut in The Little Mermaid, and was nominated for a Tony AND Grammy for Ain't Too Proud. Madolyn Smith Osborne had the kind of fairy tale show business beginning that most can only fantasize about. While still in school at The University of Southern California, she won her first paycheck with a serendipitous audition before famed choreographer, Gower Champion, when a lead dancer and understudy had to be replaced in the Broadway-bound production of Pal Joey starring Lena Horne.  Madolyn's passion for musical theater as well as her training with beloved choreographers Bill and Jacqui Landrum, prepared her well for the opportunity. A year later, on the eve of graduating from USC's School of Dramatic Arts., her mentor, the late, iconic theatre and film producer and Academy Award-winning actor, John Houseman, launched a swan song of sorts for her with a production of Shakespeare's All's Well That Ends Well, in which Madolyn starred in the role of Helena. Mr. Houseman had invited various industry professionals to see the show in the 99-seat Stop Gap Theater on campus, including his former protege, film director, Jim Bridges, who, upon seeing Madolyn's performance, invited her to play the role of John Travolta's mistress, Pam, in the cult classic, Urban Cowboy. Madolyn went on to give multiple award-winning performances in the L.A. theater scene. Among her triumphs, she created the title role of Emily in Stephen Metcalfe's play of the same name, which was directed by the renowned producer-director, Jack O'Brien, during its premiere at San Diego's revered Old Globe Theatre.  When Madolyn was studying with legendary actress, Kim Stanley, and opera singer, Gloria Lane, she became a founding member of L.A. Theatre Works.  Madolyn also enjoyed a terrific TV and film career in which she found herself starring in features opposite the likes of no less than Steve Martin in All of Me, Roy Scheider in 2010: The Year We Make Contact, Chevy Chase in Funny Farm, Joe Pesci in The Super, and in TV shows like Due South, Cheers, If Tomorrow Comes, and Sadat. But at the height of her powers, all of that was abruptly interrupted by a chronic illness that she fights to this day.Madolyn resides in Toronto, Canada with her husband, former NHL hockey great, Mark Osborne, and 2 adult daughters who live nearby.            For the record, Madolyn and I have known one another for more years than either of us will admit, having met and worked together on a few productions while we were both in drama school at the USC.

In the meantime please enjoy Pal Joey and the Silver Age of Broadway, part 2: During the 1930s Broadway was severely impacted by the economic disaster of the "Great Depression". However, somehow out of all that hardship and struggle came an extraordinary period of artistic achievement and spectacular continuing development for the Broadway Musical. The inventors of these shows included several new and defining masters of the musical, as well as many of the bright lights of the 1920's, who now achieved their full wattage in the 1930's. Among these were Dietz & Schwartz., Lindsay & Crouse, Cole Porter, Rodgers & Hart, The Gershwins, and George "Mr" Abbott. Become a PATRON of Broadway Nation! Hey Full House Fans, Angela Bowen here, the host of Oh Mylanta Holy Chalupas: An Unofficial Full House Fuller House Podcast. Today, I'm kicking off the Best Friends Series with Full House S2E15: Pal Joey, which aired on February 17,1989. In this episode Joey and Danny recall the day they first met. I loved this episode, it was so cute. Especially seeing how Danny and Joey met, the kids they got to play them are absolutely adorable. The young man who played Danny, Phillip Glasser, I got the chance to meet him last Summer. He was so cool. He also voiced Fievel from An American Tail as well as the sequel and the short lived television series in the early 90's. Danny gets jealous of all the time that Joey and Jesse are spending together since they've become partners in advertising and Danny feels he's being edged out of Joey's life as his best friend. Danny was being so immature and Joey calls him on it and Danny decides since Joey can't read his mind and understand the reason he's upset than Joey and he never should have been friends to begin with. Good grief, Danny! Total Throwback Episode! So much unnecessary drama! Speaking of unnecessary drama, the side plot with Stephanie, Harry and DJ. Weird Love Triangle (at least from Steph's POV). DJ teaches Harry how to subtract and all of a sudden he's in love with her. Poor Steph is heartbroken. It's another switching rooms for an episode scenario. How it goes unnoticed with three adults in the house, only the writers can answer that question. It's up to Jesse and DJ to bring Steph and Harry back together. Join me next week when I cover the next episode in the series, Full House S3E9: Dr. Dare Rides Again, which aired on November 24, 1989. In this episode Comet, the family's new dog, eats Michelle's ice cream. Pete is an old pal that Jesse once knew. He visits the family when Danny and Becky are away on a talk show styling trip. 'Feedback' and some of Jesse's old ways pop up. Have a great week everyone!
