The narrative flipped — again. What Democrats once called proof that Trump was “controlled by Putin” is now being spun as oil profiteering. Tara dismantles that claim and explains why Venezuela's oil isn't about greed — it's about global leverage, affordability, and national security.

Today, Martha and Les bring you a very special episode of Fault Lines, recorded live at Max's Steakhouse in Prague with an international group of fans, listeners, and a cameo from NSI Founder and Executive Director, Jamil Jaffer. From Czech locals to Americans abroad, the team fielded sharp questions about the future of NATO-style alliances in Asia, the direction of U.S. sanctions policy, and Russia's financing of war through African gold. The live audience also raised timely questions about press freedom, the future of global conflict, and what comes next for U.S. policy in the Middle East, Russia, and beyond. Will the Quad or AUKUS ever evolve into a true multilateral security framework? Can U.S. pressure on Russia—through both sanctions and global alliances—actually shift the tide in Ukraine? And does the growing web of cyberattacks and shadow alliances already mean we're in a new kind of global conflict?Check out the answers to these questions and more in this very special episode of Fault Lines.Follow our experts on Twitter: @marthamillerdc@lestermunsonLike what we're doing here? In this case, the court considered this issue: Can U.S. gun manufacturers be held liable for violence in Mexico under theories of proximate causation and aiding and abetting, based on their domestic production and sale of firearms that are later trafficked to Mexican cartels? The case was decided on June 5, 2025.In a unanimous decision on June 5, 2025, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of American gun manufacturers, including Smith & Wesson, dismissing a lawsuit filed by the Mexican government. Mexico had accused the companies of facilitating illegal firearms trafficking that contributed to cartel violence within the country. The Court's opinion, authored by Justice Elena Kagan, emphasized that the 2005 Protection of Lawful Commerce in Arms Act (PLCAA) provides broad immunity to gun manufacturers against lawsuits arising from the criminal misuse of their products. While PLCAA includes an exception for cases where a manufacturer knowingly violates federal or state laws related to firearm sales or marketing, the Court found that Mexico's allegations did not meet this threshold. Specifically, Mexico failed to demonstrate that the manufacturers knowingly aided or abetted illegal trafficking beyond lawful commerce practices. The opinion is presented here in its entirety, but with citations omitted. “Everybody's doing it, but nobody's talking about it because it's so secretive.” Alrighty, curious people, we're getting spicy & kicking off Queer History Month with a smash (not a pass) - it's all about gay cruising this week with professor & author, Alex Espinoza. We're asking hard hitting questions like: Where was the first gloryhole? Were gays cruising during the Renaissance? Can U host? JK - but we do also talk about what apps like Grindr have done to this age old practice, and why the taboo of a sexual gathering space has been “a thing” all throughout history. Alex Espinoza is a queer writer born in Tijuana, Mexico and raised in Southern California. He is the author of “Cruising: An Intimate History of a Radical Pastime” and has written essays, reviews, and stories for the New York Times Sunday Magazine, Virginia Quarterly Review, the Los Angeles Times, LitHub, and NPR. He is also the recipient of awards and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, and the Macdowell Foundation. Alex is the chair of the Creative Writing department at the University of California. His latest novel, “The Sons of El Rey” came out earlier this year. A particularly troubling recent quote from a Ukrainian soldier on the frontlines by Reuters was: “worse than hell.” Russian drone and artillery relentlessly target Ukrainian soldiers on the front lines. Ukrainian military leaders openly admit that the situation on the eastern front is decidedly worse in recent months. Russia, meanwhile, has executed a savage onslaught on Ukraine. This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit www.politix.fmThis week, with so many American liberals and leaders abroad worrying about what a second Trump term will mean for them, Matt and Brian examine the many political differences between fear and fearlessness. For instance:* If Trump's threats have become more literal and less figurative, how can liberals most effectively oppose him without sounding like panicky wimps?* Have Trump-curious business elites taken leave of their senses, or do they really think Trump can't possibly harm American capitalism more than huge corporate tax cuts will “help”?* Do progressives agree that Trump is an existential threat to democracy? And if so, are they receptive to muscular “bring it on” politics, or are crisis and doom the only appeals that speak to them. Then, behind the paywall, Brian and Matt take a look at global and domestic developments—from the Mexican election to diplomacy in the Middle East and the zombie border bill in Congress—to assess how actors with everything on the line are changing their behavior and contingency planning for a second Trump term. If they're freaking out, why shouldn't we be? If the situation is so dire, shouldn't Biden entertain more drastic measures? Can U.S. leaders be simultaneously clear eyed in planning for the worst and resolute (rather than cowering) in their resistance?Answers to all those questions, plus the full Politix archive are available to paid subscribers—just upgrade your subscription and pipe full episodes directly to your favorite podcast app via your own private feed. Further reading:* Matt, on how Trump's scams will only get worse in a second term. * Brian on why progressive activists should lay off murder-suicide threats as “leverage.”* Greg Sargent on the Trump movement's many sadistic fantasies.* Jamelle Bouie on the people (immigrants) who will bear the brunt of this sadism.
