Our guest today is Phyllis Elmore, a remarkable woman whose story is as unforgettable as the quilts that helped shape her life.Phyllis is the author of Quilt of Souls, a powerful and deeply personal memoir that has touched readers across the country. Born in the Detroit and raised by her grandmother Lula in rural Alabama, Phyllis found herself immersed in a world of deep wisdom, quiet strength, and generational resilience. It was there, surrounded by women who stitched their pain, perseverance, and history into quilts, that Phyllis discovered healing—and the true meaning of family. In 1973, Phyllis joined the United States Air Force and was one of the first female Aircraft Pneudraulic Specialist for the B-52 Bomber. After leaving the Air Force she attended the University of Maryland, Baltimore County, graduating with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Sociology.  In 2001, she joined the Army National Guard as an active-duty guard member. It's also noteworthy to mention that Phyllis was one of only a handful of women in the military who served in three major military conflicts including the Vietnam Era where she served a temporary duty assignment to Vietnam before the 1975 fall of Saigon.  She was also deployed to Saudi Arabia as a member of Operation Desert Storm, and in December 2003 as a member of the Army National Guard where she was deployed in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. In her civilian career she worked as a counselor for incarcerated youth and for women who were victims of domestic violence. She also spent ten years as a Substance Abuse Counseling Supervisor. In her remarkable book Quilt of Souls, Phyllis shares stories that were nearly lost stories of the Black women who raised children not theirs, who held families together through hardship, and who passed down their heritage through hands that stitched, cooked, comforted, and carried so much. Her writing is rich, lyrical, and full of love—an act of remembrance and a celebration of the strength it takes to keep going, and to keep telling the truth.(3:11) Phyllis recounts being uprooted from Detroit at age four and sent to rural Alabama to live with her grandmother, Lula. She describes the powerful emotional refuge of Lula's quilts—especially one that made her feel truly safe for the first time.(8:03) We get to know Grandmother Lula, an indomitable force who stitched not only quilts but entire communities together. Lula lived to be 105 years old and was threading a needle at 100.(15:55) Phyllis reflects on her return to Detroit as a teen, where she was labeled “incorrigible”—and how those experiences shaped her decision to join the U.S. Air Force.(23:57) After her military service, Phyllis worked as a counselor for incarcerated youth and women facing domestic abuse. Hear how she channeled her life experiences into serving others.(27:30) What inspired Quilt of Souls? Phyllis shares the moment she realized that the stories she carried could—and should—be written down.(30:39) She recalls a particularly poignant story unearthed during her research—one that stuck with her and shaped the book's message.(34:27) Meet Miss Jubilee and hear about the extraordinary quilts and lives Phyllis encountered while researching her memoir.(40:43) Discover the Quilt of Souls Preservation Project and get a preview of Phyllis' upcoming Quilt of Souls Gathering in June 2026.(46:15) Phyllis reveals what she hopes readers take away from Quilt of Souls—and why she believes it's never too late to “right” your story.(51:00) What didn't we ask that she wishes we had? In this Bible Story, we witness the continued bravery of David even into old age. He continues to wage war against all who would threaten the followers of God. As a result, David becomes weary, but doesn't lose hope in the Lord. This story is inspired by 2 Samuel 21. Go to BibleinaYear.com and learn the Bible in a Year.Today's Bible verse is 2 Samuel 21:3 from the King James Version.Episode 110: Famine was in the land of Israel, and this led to hard times for the people. So David sought the Lord and asked what he should do. God showed him the reason for the famine and commanded him to make peace with the Gibeonites for the sins that Saul had committed against them. David called the Gibeonites to him and gave them their request, the life of Saul's sons. After this, the famine eased and Israel once again flourished. However, this flourishing would draw out more enemies of Israel and more battles, battles that David was too old to fight in.Hear the Bible come to life as Pastor Jack Graham leads you through the official BibleinaYear.com podcast. On this episode, Chris is joined by Karen Bailey - Chapman, Senior Vice President - Public and Government Affairs at SEMA.  They chat about SEMA's advocacy initiatives and how electric vehicle mandates, tariffs and limiting access to public land impact the enthusiast vehicle community.  Government policy inadvertently promotes stagnating innovation, increasing costs and limiting use of public lands. SEMA's advocacy initiatives are lobbying government decision makers to normalize and reverse the negative impact government policy has on the enthusiast vehicle community and aftermarket suppliers.        It all began in 1963 when a group of small manufacturers who were suppliers of performance equipment for early hot rods organized their fledgling industry and called it "Speed Equipment Manufacturers Association" (SEMA).The mission was practical and straightforward: develop uniform standards for certain products used in motorsports competition; promote the industry as a supplier to consumers involved in constructive activities of recreational and hobbyist value; develop programs to encourage improved business practices among member companies; and hold regular meetings to achieve unity as a business organization. In those days, all of the members were founders of companies that produced speed equipment exclusively (hence, the organization's title). At the outset, the pioneering companies operated free of the constraints that come from governmental regulations and their attending restrictions. They were as aggressive and progressive as their imaginations would allow, and the mostly small businesses flourished. Today, many of the original companies are very large, successful corporations, and some, such as Edelbrock, Ansen, B&M and Offenhauser, are known internationally for their product lines. Today, more than 40 years later, the small group of entrepreneurial operations has been joined by thousands of companies, designers, producers and suppliers of specialty products that span the gamut. From performance products for street and race applications to appearance accessories for late-model automobiles and light-duty trucks, SEMA-member companies contribute to the vitality and strength of a $29.9-billion-a-year retail industry.SEMA eventually became the Specialty Equipment Market Association, embracing within its ranks all businesses in the distribution chain: manufacturers, warehouse distributors, jobbers, independent retailers, volume retailers, specialty stores (speed shops), sales agents, subcontractors and publishing companies. The membership categories even include racing teams, car clubs and special service organizations. The SEMA membership roster has steadily grown and continues its upward climb. Today there are more than 6,382 corporate members. Products supplied by the industry are in demand not only in the United States, but also throughout the world.Follow, Like and subscribe to the podcast on Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and your podcast listing platform. Given the gross miscarriages of justice exposed by the Post Office/Horizon scandal, the extraordinary delay in reversing the wrongful conviction of Andrew Malkinson due to repeated failures by the Criminal Cases Review Commission and the continuing calls for the case of Lucy Letby to be referred back to the Court of Appeal, is the criminal appeal system in need of fundamental reform? Connecting the dots between recent events, and the health of criminal justice in Britain is Professor Penney Lewis who joins Ken Macdonald KC and Tim Owen KC to explain, in accessible terms, insider legal perspectives on topics such as the basis on which the Court of Appeal decides whether a criminal conviction is unsafe; the admissibility of fresh, post-trial evidence;  the need for reform of juror secrecy; compensation for the wrongly convicted; and whether the Supreme Court should be able to decide for itself whether to entertain an appeal from the Court of Appeal (Criminal Division).  Link to the Law Commission's Summary of its Consultation Paper on criminal appeals: https://cloud-platform-e218f50a4812967ba1215eaecede923f.s3.amazonaws.com/uploads/sites/54/2025/02/Criminal-Appeals-CP-Summary.pdf Penney Lewis was formerly Professor of Law and Co-Director of the Centre of Medical Law and Ethics in the Dickson Poon School of Law, King's College, London and is currently the Criminal Law Commissioner of the Law Commission of England and Wales.  The Law Commission is currently consulting on reforms to the law governing criminal appeals including the tests applied by appeal courts and the Criminal Cases Review Commission, post-trial retention of and access to evidence, and compensation and support for the wrongly convicted.  If you're looking for thoughtful legal system insights, a deeper understanding of UK politics, or an unflinching look at UK law and legal battles in Britain, this episode delivers it all. In this classic chapter of 3 Books, we sat down together at the busiest hotel in downtown Toronto on the tail end of Angie's 15-city book tour to discuss how we find the truth for ourselves, when do we bring up harsh realities to kids, and what place media and religion have in society today. We dive deep into the heightened racial and political tensions today and we search for a way out and, as always, we get to learn Angie Thomas's three most formative books. Let's flip the page back to Chapter 26 now...

Driving for Your Success with Sheevaun Moran

Everyone, Sheevaun around here, deriving for your success, and today the reason I'm sitting in this spot with this background is I want to talk about something that is so important to anyone's life, but especially if you're in a business and you're growing your business. It's This idea that this last mile is going to be a doozy. You know, there are the most accidents that occur because of the last few miles before you get home. True. In fact, you get tired, you check out, you're not as grounded, you're not as focused. The last mile is often the mile that really really stops everyone. And so the reason I'm sitting in this place at this time is because I host or have been hosting for the past 15 years a summit called the Epic Life Success Summit and I remember the first time that I hosted one I had a partner and basically he was trying to take over the entire summit And I remember sitting here in this spot, but there was a different, slightly different thing that was happening in the background. There was this hummingbird that kept, oh gosh, this hummingbird, amazing hummingbird, just kept at it in this little area where you see the light.   It kept coming to the window and kind of encouraging me, if you will, to not give up, to stick with it, to go through with it. And it was expensive, and it was hard, and it was in a different state, and so many things. And so had I given up on that, a lot of people, hundreds and hundreds of people, would not have, you know, gotten the transformation. And so the last mile is And most things break because the driver breaks, because the idea gets so over it. You get tired of it, you're sick of it. You don't want to do it anymore, it's too much, it's too much friction. And you know, when you think about the last mile, it could be easy if you're going to give up. But what if this last mile is the thing that you get on the other side of. This could be your swan song. This last mile could be the thing that you need to hear in order to take and stay with it. Stick with it. You know, there's a whole idea of three feet from gold and oftentimes we are three feet from gold. It could just take one post, one concept, one idea that is going to churn everything around. Apple, classic example of the last mile. We wouldn't be having smartphones the way we do if Steve Jobs had given up on the last mile. And there's so many things, I mean I just heard something about Sly and the Family Stones, a band from the 60s and 70s. and he got very famous because he decided to record a song that was beyond the last mile. So what is your last mile that you need to stick with? What is the last mile that you've given up on? What is the last mile that you are considering quitting? You know, this last mile could be your thing.  It could be the very thing. Often, it's a financial thing that you're like, "I can't, I can't, I can't take it anymore." And maybe that's not true. If you've made it this far, you can make it further. What is your last mile? Where are you in this, in this theme, in this process, in this place, in your journey? The last mile, go beyond it. President Trump will address Congress tonight on the theme of restoring America. It is hard to overstate the importance – and the comprehensiveness – of his efforts so far to do just that. Our chief executive has striven to reestablish the values, renew the institutions, and redirect the priorities of a nation that Barack Obama promised to “fundamentally transform” – and did over what amounted to his three terms. For example, Mr. Trump's “commonsense” has reaffirmed that there are two genders, one national language, and no justification for our underwriting the growing threat posed by the Chinese Communist Party. Righting the ship of state in order to Make America Great Again is what Mr. Trump received a mandate to do. If his first forty- four days are any guide, his determination to keep promises made will, indeed, restore America, praise the Lord. This is Frank Gaffney.

For three decades, Kenneth Roth led Human Rights Watch, transforming it from a small advocacy group into one of the most influential human rights organizations in the world. In Righting Wrongs: Three Decades on the Front Lines Battling Abusive Governments (Knopf, 2025), he offers a gripping inside account of the relentless fight against some of the world's most abusive governments—from war crimes in Syria and Russia's authoritarianism to China's crackdown on dissent and the global erosion of democratic norms. Part memoir, part strategic guide, and part call to action, Righting Wrongs reveals the behind-the-scenes battles to hold governments accountable, the difficult choices human rights activists must make, and the lessons learned from engaging with autocrats, diplomats, and international institutions. With keen insight, Roth shows how pressure and advocacy can curb abuses and spark change—even against the most powerful forces. Have you ever shared something difficult about your grief, only to have someone respond with a dismissive comment like, “They're in a better place” or, “At least you had the years you had together?” This instinct to fix or "right" a situation is known as the righting reflex. It's a common response to seeing someone in pain that's usually well-intentioned… but it doesn't feel good.   I explore the concept of the righting reflex, how it shows up in our interactions with others and ourselves, and strategies for responding to it in a way that honors our feelings and needs.   Get full show notes, transcript, and more information here: https://www.coachingwithkrista.com/288
