My guest this week is Barry Diller, one of America's most successful businessmen. At 83, he chose to publish a deeply personal book and open up about his successes and failures. With surprising candor he details the rules he's lived by: trust first, confront directly, and make the call when the clock starts. In our conversation, he shares why success teaches you nothing, why failure is essential, and why instinct still beats algorithms in a data-obsessed world. This episode is filled with Hollywood lore and business acumen. ----- About Barry: He is the Chairman and Senior Executive of IAC, and is best known for founding the Fox Broadcasting Company with Rupert Murdoch and leading Paramount Pictures. Confidence is a cornerstone of growth, whether in your personal or professional life. It's important to have confidence in your career growth journey, and if you don't have it – to find it – especially if you want to pivot your career: A lack of confidence: can hold you back when it comes to career growth as it is accompanied by a fear or failure or rejection - preventing you from taking necessary risks that could lead to new opportunities may lead to a constricted growth mindset where you avoid challenging situations or new roles due to fear of inadequacy People lacking confidence may have an inability to leverage their skills or not fully utilize their creativity a lack of confidence could cause one to lose their voice, resulting in a reluctance to propose innovative ideas or solutions in the workplace, which limits career advancement. In this heartfelt episode, Christine coaches Marie, who is navigating transitions in both her career and personal life. As Marie opens up about feelings of inadequacy and fear stemming from her childhood, Christine helps her uncover the deeper roots of her lack of confidence and offers powerful tools for healing. Together, they explore how childhood wounds manifest in adult relationships and career dynamics, and how embracing vulnerability can lead to greater self-worth and confidence. If you've ever felt held back by old patterns or struggled with confidence in relationships or at work, this episode will provide clarity, hope, and actionable insights for your journey. Consider/Ask Yourself: Do you struggle with speaking up for yourself or setting boundaries at work or in relationships? Are there moments from your childhood that might still be influencing your confidence today? Do you find that a lack of confidence in one area of your life impacts other areas? Are you ready to uncover and heal old wounds to step into your full potential? Key Insights and A-HA's: Childhood wounds, like parental separation or taking on a caregiver role too early, can create patterns of self-silencing and people-pleasing. A lack of confidence often stems from not being allowed to express emotions or needs as a child. Healing involves doing for yourself now what you couldn't do as a child, such as using your voice and setting boundaries. Confidence grows through radical self-acceptance and addressing unmet needs with compassion and clarity. How to Get Over It & On With It: Reflect on how past wounds are showing up in your current relationships and career. Allow yourself to express repressed emotions, like anger, in healthy, somatic ways. Practice asserting your needs and opinions in situations where you typically remain silent. Use moments of discomfort as opportunities to break free from old patterns and embrace growth. Sponsor: This episode is brought to you by AquaTru, the revolutionary water purification system that ensures your drinking water is clean, safe, and free of harmful contaminants. I've found that this is very true throughout my career. There are lots of reasons to be doubtful, reasons that, if you let them, will stop your creative pursuits before you get underway. It starts with the dive into photography itself. You may feel like you are not artistic enough to become an artist or the very thought of learning all of the things that you will one day need to know might seem overwhelming. Then, as you progress, it can be challenging to work up the courage to display your images, to ask for constructive criticism. Photos might languish in a folder on your computer simply because you don't have the confidence to do much else with them... There are calls for more investment for graduates as confidence hits a new low. Talent Solutions' annual survey reveals only 19% of university students feel very confident about their job prospects. Just over half were concerned about competition for early talent roles, while 40% believe there are fewer roles to apply for. Director Seren Wilson told Mike Hosking the Government and industries need to continue to invest in programmes for young people. Hello to you listening in Cordoba, Spain!Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Wednesdays on Whidbey and your host, Diane Wyzga. Is my Origin Story work positioned as a Vitamin or an Advil? "Vitamins are nice to have but not urgent. Whereas if you're in pain you want an Advil - and fast!" These wise words came from my dear friend and colleague, Anke Herrmann (Strategic Partner, Author, Podcast Host & Dog Lover). To answer that question I need a little sounding board help because, as Anke says, “How do you expect to read the label when you're sitting inside the jar?”This much I know: each of us needs a sounding board. Perhaps I can be that for you. This is what else I know about how I can help:✓ Stories have shaped you and brought you to this point but you might need help to find the words you didn't know you had.✓ You came into the world with a voice. Your voice is your power. Your story is an expression of your power; but you might lack the awareness or confidence to express yourself or tell your story. ✓ Your Who + Your Why + Your How - in that order - sets you above the noise in the marketplace; but how do you get there? ✓ Much contemporary storytelling focuses on content at the expense of context; if you're telling just the facts you're missing the emotional story.✓ Stories must engage us with imagination, sensory images, and memories to be meaningful; I can teach you to teach yourself to be that storyteller. Question: What stories do you, your clients and audience need right now to ease pain, heal, and transform?CTA: It's time for you to take those steps to relieve the pain of confusion, anxiety, uncertainty, and lack of confidence about using your voice to say what you mean and mean what you say in any personal or professional setting, to nail that interview, clarify your ideas, and influence your listeners while transforming the lives of those you serve. But he also addresses the challenges facing pastors as they endure disapproval, opposition, foot-dragging, sabotage, and whisper campaigns. He challenges pastors to cultivate humility, seek God's wisdom and mercy, and embrace servanthood while fostering appropriate confidence and resilience in their calling to pastoral ministry.

In this episode of the Pilates Lounge Katie Crane reflects on her conversation with Pilates Elder Mary Bowen and discusses the common challenges faced by Pilates professionals. She addresses imposter syndrome, fear of failure, comparison and competition, lack of confidence, and feedback and criticism. Katie emphasizes the importance of self-reflection, continuous learning, and being true to oneself and the Pilates community. She also shares personal anecdotes and offers insights on navigating the business side of the profession. Episode Takeaways Imposter syndrome is common among Pilates professionals and can be overcome by recognizing the value of one's work and focusing on continuous learning and growth. Fear of failure is natural but should not prevent Pilates professionals from taking risks and pursuing their goals. It is important to let go of worries and focus on serving the community. Comparison and competition can be detrimental to one's confidence and growth. Instead of comparing oneself to others, it is more productive to focus on personal development and progress. Lack of confidence in business skills can lead to poor decision-making. It is important to seek support and continuously learn to navigate the business side of the profession. Feedback and criticism are valuable for personal and professional growth. Being open to feedback and using it as an opportunity to reflect and improve is crucial for success in the Pilates industry. 017 The Upside of Up-Inflection - Lack of Confidence or Deeper Connection? Host: Dr. Tori Podcast: Influence Every Day Theme: Dispelling myths about up-inflection in speech and exploring its nuanced implications in human interaction and influence. Dispelling Myths Tori addresses common misconceptions about vocal tones, especially the up-inflection, where the voice rises at the end of sentences as if posing a question. The discussion emphasizes the complexity and nuance of human interaction, cautioning against oversimplifying gestures or vocal patterns. Understanding Human Interaction Human behaviors and expressions are deeply influenced by internal states or responses to external circumstances, such as personal issues or environmental factors. The conversation highlights the importance of considering context in interactions, recognizing that people's responses may not always be directly related to the current conversation. The Nuance of Up-Inflection Contrary to popular belief, up-inflection is not inherently indicative of lack of confidence. While it can sometimes convey uncertainty, it can also be a powerful tool for engagement and listening. Tori argues that up-inflection, when used strategically, can facilitate deeper conversations and connections. Practical Application of Up-Inflection Case Study: A patient interaction demonstrates how up-inflection can be used to guide the conversation, encourage the sharing of more information, and deepen understanding. This approach allows the speaker to mirror the listener's words, turning them into open-ended questions without making assumptions or judgments. Benefits of Up-Inflection Encourages active listening and genuine engagement, allowing for a fuller understanding of the speaker's perspective. Fosters psychological safety, making it easier for individuals to share their thoughts and feelings. Can be particularly effective in professional settings, helping to maintain focus on the topic of discussion and facilitating problem-solving and rapport building. [ ***** InfluenceBookClub.com ***** ] Conclusion Up-inflection is a nuanced and multifaceted aspect of communication that, when used effectively, can enhance interpersonal interactions and influence. Listeners are encouraged to experiment with up-inflection in their conversations, paying attention to the context and the responses it elicits. Tori reminds the audience of the importance of staying open-minded and adaptive in communication strategies, recognizing the dynamic nature of human relationships. Call to Action Share your experiences with up-inflection and other communication strategies, fostering a community of learning and improvement in everyday influence. Additional Notes The episode challenges the audience to rethink and explore the subtleties of communication, emphasizing the importance of context, empathy, and strategic use of speech patterns in building stronger connections. In this week's conversation between Dr. James Emery White and co-host Alexis Drye, they discuss the findings of a Gallup poll which revealed that Americans' confidence in clergy today has declined to an all-time low of 32%. Translation? Less than a third of all Americans consider clergy to be trustworthy. Ouch. The big question that follows is, “So how can we earn it back?” Episode Links In case you missed it, Dr. White recently blogged about this topic in an entry titled “It's a Matter of Trust.” Several other blogs related to this conversation will also be really helpful for you to to dig into. On the discussion of the shadow lives, read “Evaluating the Fruit Test.” The phrase “there but by the grace of God go I” is so common but so inadequate. Find out why in a blog titled “Why Leaders are Falling.” And finally, consider a blog that explores whether it's possible for someone to be restored to ministry after a moral failing titled “When a Pastor Falls, What Then?” Today, the moral failings of pastors and church leaders seem to populate news feeds and socials. And it's doing so much harm to the witness of the Church. There are two podcasts we'd suggest you go back and listen to related to today's conversation: CCP4: On Pastors and Moral Failings and CCP31: On Celebrity Pastors. To help with understanding how to gain back lost trust, Dr. White recommended a book written by Henry Cloud titled, Trust: Knowing When to Give It, When to Withhold It, How to Earn It, and How to Fix It When It Gets Broken. Finally, we also want to share some articles with you that dive into the lack of trust the American public has toward organized religion and its leaders: Lydia Saad, “Historically Low Faith in U.S. Institutions Continues,” Gallup, July 6, 2023. Megan Brenan and Jeffrey M. Jones, “Ethics Ratings of Nearly All Professions Down in U.S.,” Gallup, January 22, 2024. Kate Shellnutt, “Above Reproach? Fewer Americans See Pastors as Ethical,” Christianity Today, January 25, 2024. For those of you who are new to Church & Culture, we'd love to invite you to subscribe (for free of course) to the twice-weekly Church & Culture blog and check out the Daily Headline News - a collection of headlines from around the globe each weekday. We'd also love to hear from you if there is a topic that you'd like to see discussed on the Church & Culture Podcast in an upcoming episode. In this episode of Facing the Dark, we delve into the topic of loneliness and how to navigate it healthily. Dr. Kathy expounds on the belief that it is not realistic to avoid loneliness all the time, but rather, it is appropriate to accept and embrace being alone at times. She emphasizes that not addressing loneliness may lead to insecurity and lack of confidence. She points out that learning to handle loneliness is important, encouraging us to see it as a positive experience. Dr. Kathy shares how resiliency is the ability to bounce back from despair, disappointment, grief, and fear, and that it is a choice that can become a part of one's character. We guide parents in fostering resiliency in children, preventing loneliness from leading to despair or isolation.
Dan Bernstein, Laurence Holmes and Leila Rahimi examined White Sox right-hander Michael Kopech's rough outing in a loss to the Angels on Tuesday, as he appears to have no confidence right now.
