On this episode of Inside Olympia ... The debate over how to balance Washington's budget? Should lawmakers cut spending? Raise taxes? Or do some of both? We hear two perspectives. Treasure Mackley with Invest in Washington Now and Paul Graves with Enterprise Washington.
“As America zigs, Washington zags." That was the name of our election night episode. And you might remember hearing from a lot of places, for days or even weeks post-election, that Washington was the only state in the country where Trump did not gain ground compared with 2020. The national vote shifted toward Trump by about 6 points. But Washington is special – we take our sweet time counting all the votes. And now that the election is certified, we can say with certainty: Washington state did swing toward Trump… a little. About a quarter of a percentage point. Still, that's less than any other state in the nation. You have this across-the-board political shift toward Trump, and Washington barely budges. Why? What is Washington state missing that the rest of the country sees, or… what do we see that they're missing? To answer that question, Sound Politics host Scott Greenstone was joined by Andrew Hong, a data and research analyst with the Washington Community Alliance with experience working with HaystaqDNA, a Democratic-aligned analytics firm this past election. The show was also joined by Paul Graves, a former Republican state Representative, and current president of Enterprise Washington, a campaign organization for the business community in Washington State. Emilie Bodoin is the founder and CEO of Pure Lithium a start-up focused on changing the way lithium metal is made and greatly enhancing the quality vs the current state of the art. The original patent for rechargeable lithium batteries goes back to the 1970s and was based on using lithium metal. Technical/safety issues forced a compromise to the current lithium ion design using metal oxides rather than lithium metal. If Emilie has her way, the next generation of rechargeable lithium batteries will utilize lithium metal and be much more powerful than what we have today. As with all start-ups, risks abound. I like Emilie's focus and determination. If you are interested in the future of lithium batteries and lithium raw materials this episode is for you. The day I met Emilie in New York in early 2019 I also met Paul Graves the CEO of Livent and former podcast guest. At the end of the episode I will discuss Livent's recently announced plan to be involved in resurrecting the largest value destroying fiasco in lithium history – Nemaska Lithium and why I like the idea.

John A. Bindernagel (born 1941 - January 18, 2018) was a wildlife biologist who sought evidence for Bigfoot since 1963. He published a book in 1998 entitled North America's Great Ape: the Sasquatch. Bindernagel grew up in Ontario, attended the University of Guelph, and received a PhD in Biology from the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He moved to British Columbia in 1975, largely because the region was a hot spot for Bigfoot sightings. I have invited many friends of the Doc to come on and talk about what John meant to them, and share their memories of him. I will also be playing some clips of past shows with John. Tonight I will be joined by Bob Gimlin, Russell Acord, Derek Randles, Ron Morehead, Paul Graves, Marc Myrsell, Thomas Sewid, Rictor Riolo, Shane Corson, and Todd and Diane Neiss. I know so many people wanted to come on and talk about John and I tried to fit in as many as possible. I think I can sum up the show tonight like this: John was an example of how to be a great human being. He always treated people with respect and was loved and admired by many. I hope when you hear the show you remember John. Check out his website HERE.

Originally recorded during the 4th annual Patients as Partners US event held in Philadelphia, March 2017, Bristol-Myers Squibb’s Mary Stober-Murray moderates this multi-stakeholder panel to discuss what patients truly want when it comes to clinical care and patient involvement. Patients John Creveling, a Parkinson’s Foundation Research Advocate, and Deb Maskens from the International Kidney Cancer Coalition, join her and representing the industry perspective are Paul Graves from Takeda Pharmaceuticals and Dr Michelle Vichnin from Merck. Closing the gap between clinical care and patients wants/needs: • Ask patients what’s going on in their lives. • Ask patients what their goals are. • Because no one asks patients these questions, the result is they get care that’s aligned with what the doctor thinks is clinically relevant, even though it may be completely out of context to what is important to the patient. What patients want and how pharma can help: • Identify what patients and industry want respectively in terms of patient involvement and why that is meaningful for each. • What can we do to enhance this across the development pipeline? • What is getting in the way? Identify hurdles. • How can we work through this collaboratively? Initially developed out of the first DPharm event, the Patients as Partners US program seeks to understand and incorporate the patient's voice in designing clinical trials and developing a clinical endpoint, as well as vastly improve the patient's entire experience in a clinical trial. The 5th annual Patients as Partners US will be March 15-16, 2018, in Philadelphia.
Paul Graves joins us to discuss the trackway that was found near Sunnyslope, WA a few weeks ago. Paul will be sharing what he found during his investigation, and there is more to the story... Paul will also be sharing with us other encounters he has investigated and some of the audio he has captured. Paul writes, "I live in eastern Washington state and have been researching Sasquatch since 1988. On Monday, February 13th, 2017 I answered an early morning knock on my front door. It was Roy Bianchi, an acquaintance I had met a few years back through the construction trade (I own a concrete business). He was excited and said he wanted to show me something. He produced his cell phone and showed me photos of tracks he found on Friday, February 10th behind a new subdivision built on former orchard land. Roy is also a lifelong outdoorsman, and he had never seen tracks like these before. Upon first glance at the photos, I knew I had to go see the trackway. Previously, on Thursday, February 9th, roughly 8 inches of snow had fallen. The next morning, Roy and a coworker had to plow the construction area and discovered the trackway. The tracks were most likely made at night during the snowstorm, because when they were discovered, they were partially filled in with snow. After a third coworker examined the tracks, he suggested they should get hold of me (I am well known in this town as a sasquatch researcher). When I arrived on site there were five people already present, including the home builder, my research colleague Josh Lawrence, and a reporter for the Wenatchee World newspaper. With the exception of the reporter, each and every one of us are hunters and trackers with many years of experience, and we were all equally baffled by these prints. There was nearly 2 feet of snow on the ground, with a thin crust of ice on top that made walking very difficult. I am a trained tracker and spend a lot of time in the winter on snowshoes, and there was no indication of an animal bounding or hopping, nor animal tracks present inside of the prints.

Interview Starts 35:10 Thom Powell joins us for a great chat about squatchin and other paranormal topics. Thom is a science teacher, outdoorsman, author, sasquatch and paranormal researcher. We talk about evolving from nuts and bolts/flesh and blood (Aper) to high strangeness (Woo) and how Thom's latest book "The Edges of Science" is the culmination of this. Many of these paranormal topics overlap and have similarities and eventually the paranormal becomes science. Should we not accept that intel gathering as apposed to hard core scientific evidence may be required for a while. There are various ways to communicate with these 'creatures'. http://www.thomsquatch.com/ In the intro we share many listening synchro's from the latest Mike Clelland episode on Owls and Synchronicities.
