Upfront Investor Podcast: Weekly Australian Stock Market Update | Trading and Investing Education
In this week's Talking Wealth podcast, Janine shares her view on RIO Tinto's share price, other lithium stocks and RIO's bid for Arcadium Lithium. Is RIO Tinto buying Arcadium at a good time and which lithium stocks are worth keeping an eye on?

Interview with Chris Doornbos, President & CEO of E3 Lithium Ltd.Our previous interview: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/posts/e3-lithium-tsxvetl-pioneering-lithium-development-in-the-heart-of-canadas-energy-industry-5064Recording date: 2nd December 2024E3 Lithium represents a compelling opportunity in the North American critical minerals sector, developing what could become one of the region's largest lithium production facilities in Alberta, Canada. The company's Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) project aims to begin production by 2027-2028, leveraging existing oil and gas infrastructure and strong government support. The company's resource base of 16 million tonnes of lithium carbonate equivalent (LCE) - five times larger than all other Canadian lithium resources combined - provides significant scale potential. E3 has adopted a phased development approach, initially targeting 10,000-12,000 tonnes annual production instead of the originally planned 32,000 tonnes, demonstrating prudent capital management and risk mitigation.Financial positioning is robust, with $23 million in cash and $37 million in federal and provincial grants secured. Importantly, the project qualifies for Canada's 30% Investment Tax Credit on capital expenditure, substantially reducing the financing burden. Operating costs are projected at $6,200 per tonne against current market prices of $10,000-12,000/tonne, suggesting healthy margins even in the current softer price environment. The company's DLE technology, under development since 2017, benefits from Alberta's established regulatory framework for resource extraction. Rather than facing traditional mining permits, the project falls under oil and gas regulations, potentially streamlining the development timeline.Strategic partnership potential is significant, with E3 actively engaging automotive, battery, oil and gas, and mining companies for project-level investment. Recent sector moves by major players like Rio Tinto's acquisition of Arcadium and General Motos (GM)'s investment in Thacker Pass validate growing institutional confidence in the lithium sector.Key investment considerations include:Scale Advantage: Largest measured and indicated lithium resource in Canada, supporting multiple potential projects.Strong Financial Position: Funding secured plus 30% Investment Tax Credit eligibility.Strategic Location: Established energy province with existing infrastructure.Technical De-risking: DLE technology validated since 2017 with demonstration plant pending.Market Position: Early mover potential in North American supply with multiple strategic partnership opportunities. The macro environment strongly supports domestic lithium development, driven by supply chain security concerns and growing Western emphasis on reducing dependency on Chinese processing capacity (currently 70-80% of battery-grade lithium). Government policy and funding support reflect lithium's critical mineral status.E3's approach of repurposing existing oil and gas infrastructure for critical mineral production could provide a template for future North American resource development. While market conditions remain challenging, the company's robust fundamentals and strategic positioning suggest potential for significant value creation as North American lithium supply chains develop.Management's focus on securing strategic partnerships at the project level rather than corporate equity investment demonstrates a commitment to minimizing dilution while maximizing long-term value potential. The phased development approach and strong government support provide multiple paths to value realization.View E3 Lithium's company profile: https://www.cruxinvestor.com/companies/e3-lithiumSign up for Crux Investor: https://cruxinvestor.com

Gold and some commodity stocks (like uranium) are moving higher much faster than the stock market in recent weeks. Speaking of gold, it remains near highs as those bankers and politicians rev up the printing presses to add to already insurmountable debts. Silver is catching a bid. Details here. https://bit.ly/3BGn4j1We kick off this week's episode of Investing in Bizarro World with some macro musings that cover all that and more. And then we discuss lithium's bottoming process and what's driving it, including recent Chinese production curtailment and Rio Tinto's recent $6 billion bid for Arcadium. We have a long history with what is now Arcadium as one of its predecessor companies acquired a lithium start-up we helped finance back in 2017. Wall St closed higher overnight as the Dow Jones secures its 7th winning day up 0.85%. The S&P 500 gained over half a percent and the tech heavy Nasdaq also rallied 0.27%. In terms of US stocks, both Home Depot and Caterpillar led the Dow in Thursdays trading session, rising more than 2% each.Over in Europe, markets closed higher as positive momentum was gained from a busy week of earnings. The STOXX600 closed 0.2% up by the closing bell with most sectors ending in the green, led by gas stocks rising 0.9%, whilst autos fell 0.9%. Germany's DAX finished the day over 1% higher, the French CAC rallied 0.69% and over in the UK the FTSE100 ended the trading session 0.33% in the green.Locally yesterday, the ASX200 closed 1.06% lower with the majority of sectors finishing the day in the red. Losses were led by the consumer discretionary and financial sectors which lost 2.56% and 1.71% respectively. This was offset by the energy sector which gained over half a percent by the closing bell on Thursday. What to watch today:The Australian share market is set to open higher, with the SPI futures suggesting a rise of 0.3% by market open this morning. On the commodities front this morning, Oil is trading 0.72% higher at US$79.52/barrel after a decline in US crude stockpiles shows a tightening supply. Gold is trading 1.61% higher at US$2346/ounce as strong over-the-counter market investment, consistent central bank buying and growing Asian demand all gave gold a boost. And iron ore is trading down 1.77% at US$116.59/tonne.Trading Ideas:Bell Potter maintains a buy rating on Arcadium lithium (ASX:LTM), despite slightly decreasing its 12-month price target to $9.50. The buy rating is maintained by Bell Potter as LTM provides the largest, most diversified exposure to lithium in terms of mode of upstream production, asset locations, downstream processing and customer markets. It is a key large-cap leverage to lithium prices and sentiment, which is expected to improve over the medium term. In supportive markets, LTM's growth pipeline could see the company more than double production over the next three years, hence the buy rating is maintained. And Trading Central has identified a bearish signal on NAB (ASX:NAB), indicating that the stock price may fall from the close of $33.52 to the range of $31-$31.50 on a pattern formed over 56 days, according to the standard principles of technical analysis.

Want to know what just might be the top explosive growth stock to buy for 2024? The lithium market got blasted in 2023 due to supply chain issues, geopolitical economic battles between the U.S. and China, slowing (but not declining) demand for electric vehicles, and more. But could the market be at a bottom and mounting a recovery? Arcadium Lithium thinks things are looking up. The company, which was formed out of the merger between Livent and Allkem, looks like it's in good shape. The stock rallied on recent comments from management, and has adequate cash to meet its expansion plans over the next two years. In this episode of Chip Stock Investor, Nick and Kasey discuss the dynamic situation taking place in the lithium mining and refining industry, and parse through Arcadium's recent comments and quarterly financials to get clues on whether it's time to buy the stock. They also talk about valuation, and what they plan to do with their holding in Arcadium Lithium this year.
The lithium market has been in total disarray, and spot prices for the key ingredient in EV batteries have continued to fall in 2024. Top stocks like Albemarle and Arcadium Lithium (formerly Livent and Allkem) have been dragged down along with those market prices. To that end, Albemarle recently provided some general updates indicating actions it has taken to protect its long-term viability. Chip Stock Investor expects similar for Arcadium as well when they report earnings later in February. Nick and Kasey provide a couple key details to keep in mind for these lithium companies, and whether this is the end of the road for them. In this video, we will discuss Tesla's recent move into lithium refining and what it means for the company, and the electric vehicle industry as a whole. Tesla is investing in lithium refining with the new facility being built in Texas, in order to reduce its reliance on external suppliers and lower the cost of its electric vehicles. This is a smart move, as lithium is a key component of EV batteries and a significant cost of the electric vehicle. Tesla's move into lithium refining could put pressure on its competitors, who will need to find ways to reduce their own costs in order to compete. This could lead to an even deeper price war in the EV industry, which would be good for consumers, and one in which Tesla is most capable of winning. Livent, another lithium company, is merging with Allkem, to form the company Arcadium. The deal is expected to close by the end of 2023. The merger with Allkem would further vertically integrate the company and make it more competitive in the lithium production space as well. However, Livent stock has taken a beating, with the cost of raw lithium tumbling in the last several months. However, lithium refining is a lucrative business, and Livent seems to have that “license to print money” that Elon Musk was talking about. What are our long term thoughts on each of these companies, and the lithium market overall? Check out this episode to find out! This week on the podcast, Jackie, Jonny, and Ty are joined by a very special guest who was gracious enough to lend the gang his time while visiting from Montreal, the hilarious Charles Daghlian! Charles brought in Red Hot Chili Peppers' iconic 2006 album "Stadium Arcadium", and Jackie could barely contain her excitement. They even delve into the music with this one, talking all about the progression of the band, their infectious love for each other and the music, and of course, as always, the genius of John Frusciante. They also did a deep dive on what kind of comedy is best for porn, if Jonny could earn money flashing dong, and Ty's disappointment when he learned the truth about Carnival. Kalli makes the case for the awesomeness of "Stadium Arcadium," an album that's often bashed by early-era RHCP fans and purists for being overly long, dated, and scattered.
This week I throw shade at Shaq, remember Hank Aaron and try to prepare you for the onslaught of "Brady vs. Mahomes" narratives that we're about to be force fed. I also share the discovery that a West Virginia native who appeared in an 80's comedy classic was also a pretty good football player. Now that they have their discs straight, Slammy and Weezee get to work on the second half of Stadium Arcadium--a collection that might not have all the bangers of Disc One (Jupiter), but might be the stronger of the two as a whole.
