The Moreton Bay Council has voted to ban homeless people from keeping pets in public spaces, and sleeping in vehicles and vans in public spaces. Mayor Peter Flannery, the man who proposed the motion to council that was passed unanimously, told Peter Fegan on 4BC Breakfast, 'we've seen a dramatic increase, particularly in the last 12 months, of people illegal camping or claiming to be homeless.' 'That number has grown and grown significantly, as well as the complaints of people from the wider community who have come into contact with these people in those public areas,' the Mayor said. 'I've had childcare centres saying we can't go to the park anymore because there's homeless people sleeping near it and have been abusive, or schoolchildren worry about going to the park because the toilets have been overtaken by homeless people. We try to be compassionate as much as possible and reason with those people and take a sensible approach.' 'It's got to the point now that the public safety has become a critical issue now, particularly summer and the school holidays, people going to our parks, our foreshores, our beaches,' Peter Flannery continued. 'Some of these people, like you said, don't want to accept the support that's been offered to them, want to stay there because they're camping for free and we've said enough's enough for that and if you're doing the wrong thing, we want to move you on.' Mayor Flannery said it was a 'difficult decision, but we had to make it.' See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

First broadcast on FAB RADIO INTERNATIONAL at 19:00 on January 1st 2023 VISION ON SOUND's old friend SANDY McGREGOR is back again this week to take a look at another of the serious television dramas that he enjoys so much and likes to talk to me about. This time it's PETER FLANNERY'S epic nine-part drama OUR FRIENDS IN THE NORTH that he has been watching. It's a story based upon the original scripts created for a stage show version, written whilst FLANNERY was writer-in-residence at the ROYAL SHAKESPEARE COMPANY, and which, when it came to be produced, was such a huge production that it was allocated half of the BBC's DRAMA BUDGET for the entire year it was made in. The story unfolds across a quarter of a century. The story starts in 1964 and the TV version, unlike the stage play, which ends in 1979, takes the story on to the year 1995. The series follows the lives of four friends who grew up in NEWCASTLE, GEORDIE PEACOCK, NICKY HUTCHISON, MARY SOULSBY and TOSKER COX as played in career-making roles by DANIEL CRAIG, CHRISTOPHER ECCLESTON, GINA McKEE, and MARK STRONG, in a variety of hairpieces and make-up. The series is set around the backdrop of seismic and significant political and social upheavals, and we meet these characters in several historically significant years as they grow up and grow apart, and as their lives continue to cross and diverge over the decades, and we witness the various triumphs and disappointments that they meet along the way. Much like in real life really. With a supporting cast of acting greats like PETER VAUGHAN, MALCOLM MACDOWELL, ALUN ARMSTRONG, DAVID BRADLEY, TONY HAYGARTH, PETER JEFFREY and DONALD SUMPTER on the roster, this was the definite “must see” event drama of the year 1996, and won the BEST DRAMA SERIAL BAFTA AWARD in 1997 with several of the actors also being nominated, alongside nominations in several technical categories. In 2022, the story was rewritten, and updated as a radio series for RADIO FOUR featuring different actors LUKE McGREGOR, JAMES BAXTER, NORAH LOPEZ HOLDEN and PHILIP CORREIA, featuring a tenth chapter written by ADAM USDEN which was set in 2020, so I think, like a lot of the very best sagas, this is a story that keeps on getting more fascinating as the years pass. PLEASE NOTE - For Copyright reasons, musical content sometimes has to be removed for the podcast edition. All the spoken word content remains (mostly) as it was in the broadcast version. Hopefully this won't spoil your enjoyment of the show.

This is the second of two 50 Shades episodes that Stephen Gleave has put together. Stephen is an urban designer and town planner and has been based in the north west of England for nearly 30 years. Stephen was invited to guest edit the Summer 2021 edition of the Urban Design Group's quarterly journal and Sam Stafford has lent the 50 Shades of Planning Podcast as a platform for Stephen to share some of the material that he curated.  If you have listened to Part 1 you will know that Stephen set out to explore urban design in the north, the 'Northern Powerhouse' and what 'levelling up' might mean for placemaking. What are the current active urban designers “up to” across the north? What influence are they having, what are they achieving and what challenges are they facing?  Stephen sought input from a range of academics, consultants and practitioners in both public and private sectors and some of the contributors have kindly taken the time to read their essays for these two 50 Shades episodes.  Part 2 features Leah Stuart at Civic Engineers (@LeahStu) on movement in towns and across the region; Graeme Moore at Oldham Council (@geordiegraeme81) with a view from the front line; Graham Marshall at Prosocial Place (@prosocialplace) on how people are the northern powerhouse; and Matt Doran at Manchester City Council (@iammattdoran) on the future of our town and city centres.  Information on how to join the Urban Design Group and how to get hold of a copy of the Summer 2021 edition of the journal can be found here. https://www.udg.org.uk/publications/journal/urban-design-159-summer-2021 Some of this contributors to this episode have come together to form Common Good, a non-profit group of practitioners acting in their own time to encourage discussions around sustainable places and good design in the North. Our second and concluding exploration of Peter Flannery's Tyneside-set epic Our Friends in the North. In this episode we review the final 4 episodes set between 1979 and 1995, as the trials and tribulations in the lives of the four friends are played out against the backdrop of Thatcher's victory, The Miners' Strike, The Great Storm of '87, the Stock Market Crash, and the rise of New Labour. This time Andy and Martin analyse the political messages of the series and the development of the four protagonists, as well as reflecting on the fact that they lived through the events depicted. As with the first part, our critique of the series compelling storylines is accompanied by the songs of the times. Ho'way man! It's time to gan 'yem hinny. Andy, who grew up in the North East, first watched the series half his lifetime ago, aged 24, while Martin enjoys it for the very first time. They both agree however that 'Our Friends' is a stone-cold classic. Because there was just too much to say about this phenomenal series we've divided our episode on Peter Flannery's epic award-winning drama about love, politics, police corruption, and housing policy, into two parts. In this first part we discuss the four leading characters: idealistic Nicky (Christopher Eccleston), long-suffering Mary (Gina McKee), troubled Geordie (Daniel Craig) and flawed dreamer Tosker (Mark Strong). We also share our favourite moments and plotlines from the first five episodes which were set between 1964 and 1974. Next time we'll cover 1979 onwards. We don't always find this watch of Our Friends a comfortable experience with it's vivid depiction of corruption, self-serving Tories, and self-defeating Labour factionalism, all of which underline that very little has changed here in the UK. However, at the same time we absolutely revel in the series' ambition, complex characters, and intricate plotting. The soundtrack is pretty awesome too. "I'm coming home Newcastle. You can keep yer London wine. I'd walk the streets al day al neet, for a bottle of the River Tyne." Next Time: Our Friends in the North - Part 2 (1979-1995)

From 1850 to 1886, Geronimo joined with members of three other Chiricahua Apache bands — the Tchihende, the Tsokanende and the Nednhi — to carry out numerous raids, as well as fight against Mexican and U.S. military campaigns in the northern Mexico states of Chihuahua and Sonora and in the southwestern American territories of New Mexico and Arizona. Geronimo's raids and related combat actions were a part of the prolonged period of the Apache–United States conflict, which started with American settlement in Apache lands following the end of the war with Mexico in 1848. During Geronimo's final period of conflict from 1876 to 1886, he "surrendered" three times and accepted life on the Apache reservations in Arizona. Reservation life was confining to the free-moving Apache people, and they resented restrictions on their customary way of life. He was a superb leader in raiding and warfare, he frequently led large numbers of men beyond his own following. At any one time, he would be in command of about 30 to 50 Apaches. He died from pneumonia at the age of 79 in Fort Sill, Oklahoma.17 February 2017 – Alan Aldridge - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alan_AldridgeBritish artist, graphic designer and illustrator. He is best known for his psychedelic artwork made for books and record covers by The Beatles and The Who. He designed a series of science fiction book covers for Penguin Books. He made a big impression with his illustrations for The Beatles Illustrated Lyrics book. He also provided illustrations for The Penguin Book of Comics, a history of British and American comic art. His work was characterised by a flowing, cartoony style and soft airbrushing – very much in step with the psychedelic styles of the times. His work includes the 1971 anti-war poster entitled A great place for hamburgers but who'd want to live there! Aldridge also created the artwork for Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy by Elton John in 1975. He also the creator of the Hard Rock Café logo. He died at the age of 78 in Los Angeles, California.18 February 2019 – Toni Myers - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toni_MyersCanadian film editor, writer, director, and producer, best known for her 3D IMAX work. Ms. Myers’s half-century in filmmaking included credits as writer, producer, narrator and editor as well as director. Much of that work involved documentaries that made use of Imax technology, which, with a bigger screen and enhanced sound, creates a more vivid viewing experience than a conventional movie offers. Ms. Myers directed three feature-length Imax films: “Space Station 3D” (2002), about the construction and occupation of the International Space Station; “Hubble 3D” (2010), which documented a 2009 shuttle flight to repair the Hubble telescope; and “A Beautiful Planet” (2016), which concentrated on images of Earth shot from space. All had marquee narrators — Tom Cruise for the first, Leonardo DiCaprio for the second, Jennifer Lawrence for the last. She explained in a 2010 interview with The Gazette of Montreal, “The sun rises and sets every 90 minutes in space, which means there wasn’t much time to capture the shots we asked them to get,”. She also said “There was no time or room to say: ‘Could you move to the right? It would make a better shot,’”. She died from cancer at the age of 76 in Toronto.Famous Birthdays16 February 1964 – Christopher Eccleston – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Christopher_EcclestonEnglish actor. He wrote many ballads and poems about Australian life, focusing particularly on the rural and outback areas, including the district around Binalong,New South Wales, where he spent much of his childhood. Paterson's more notable poems include "Clancy of the Overflow" (1889), "The Man from Snowy River" (1890) and "Waltzing Matilda" (1895), regarded widely as Australia's unofficial national anthem. He is also a film producer and script writer, a star of London's West End musical theatre, an award-winning writer, and an accomplished landscape painter. Humphries' characters have brought him international renown, and he also appeared in numerous stage productions, films, and television shows. Originally conceived as a dowdy Moonee Ponds housewife who caricatured Australian suburban complacency and insularity, Dame Edna Everage has evolved over four decades to become a satire of stardom – a gaudily dressed, acid-tongued, egomaniacal, internationally fêted Housewife "Gigastar". He was born in Kew, Melbourne, Victoria.Events of Interest17 February 1864 – H.L Hunley sunk a ship- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinking_of_USS_Housatonic- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H._L._Hunley_(submarine)#Attack_on_HousatonicH.L. Hunley or Hunley made her only attack against an enemy target on the night of February 17, 1864. The target was the USS Housatonic, a 1,240 long tons (1,260 t) wooden-hulled steam-powered sloop-of-war with 12 large cannons, which was stationed at the entrance to Charleston, about 5 miles (8.0 kilometres) offshore. Desperate to break the naval blockade of the city, Lieutenant George E. Dixon and a crew of seven volunteers successfully attacked Housatonic, ramming Hunley's only spar torpedo against the enemy's hull. The torpedo was detonated, sending Housatonic to the bottom in five minutes, along with five of her crewmen. Hunley did not survive the attack and sank, taking with her all eight members of her third crew, and was lost. The Sinking of USS Housatonic on 17 February 1864 during the American Civil War was an important turning point in naval warfare. H.L. Hunley became renowned as the first submarine to successfully sink an enemy vessel in combat, and was the direct progenitor of what would eventually become international submarine warfare, although the victory was Pyrrhic and short-lived, since the submarine did not survive the attack and was lost with all eight Confederate crewmen.17 February 1984 – Krull makes its way into theatres in Finland - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Krull_(film)The film was released under Krull ja näkymätön vihollinen or Krull and the invisible enemy. Directed by Peter Yates, the feature starred Ken Marshall and Lysette Anthony, and here's the plot summary as provided by IMDB.com: "A prince and a fellowship of companions set out to rescue his bride from a fortress of alien invaders who have arrived on their home planet." Krull underwent a very expensive, harsh, and dangerous production process. The film's huge budget ballooned, mainly due to the designers having to make numerous alterations to the sets corresponding to the heavily evolving script. The film was a commercial failure upon release, and critical opinion has been mixed, both upon release and in retrospect. Numerous reviewers have highlighted its visual effects and soundtrack, while several critics have criticized its plot as being derivative and nonsensical. The film has gone on to achieve cult film status.17 February 1989 – Bill and Ted’s excellent adventure came into theatres. -https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_%26_Ted%27s_Excellent_Adventure#ReleaseThe flick premiered on this day in 1989, and it still enjoys a cult audience today ... so much so that a third installment is said to be in-the-works. Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure received generally positive reviews, and was a success at the box office, grossing $40.5 million against a $6.5 million budget. The picture had been planned for a 1988 release, and filming and production had completed on schedule. However, the original film distributor, DEG, fell into significant debt in late 1987, and by 1988 had filed for bankruptcy. At this point, the film was in post-production, and the director Stephen Henek attempted to show around the rough cut to other distributors. Henek said many of these companies were confused, asking him "Are there kids that really speak like this?" on seeing the film. However, the cut had an extremely popular reaction from a test audience of volunteers pulled from local malls, which led to a small bidding war from production companies to get the title.IntroArtist – Goblins from MarsSong Title – Super Mario - Overworld Theme (GFM Trap Remix)Song Link - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-GNMe6kF0j0&index=4&list=PLHmTsVREU3Ar1AJWkimkl6Pux3R5PB-QJFollow us onFacebook- Page - https://www.facebook.com/NerdsAmalgamated/- Group - https://www.facebook.com/groups/440485136816406/Twitter - https://twitter.com/NAmalgamatedSpotify - https://open.spotify.com/show/6Nux69rftdBeeEXwD8GXrSiTunes - https://itunes.apple.com/au/podcast/top-shelf-nerds/id1347661094RSS - http://www.thatsnotcanonproductions.com/topshelfnerdspodcast?format=rssInstagram - https://www.instagram.com/nerds_amalgamated/General EnquiriesEmail - Nerds.Amalgamated@gmail.comRate & Review us on Podchaser - https://www.podchaser.com/podcasts/nerds-amalgamated-623195

Own It! For Entrepreneurs. Talking Digital Marketing, Small Business, Being Digital Nomads and Success Thinking

Paula Gardner joins us to talk about Chaos Theory which is about how every tiny decision alters your course and how you come to realise you have no control over events, good or bad.   In The Show Nicola’s having a quiet week since sister Sarah returned to the UK. Dave’s Dining Club re-opens now that the offseason has returned to Stoupa. Judith’s moved house, said goodbye to everyone in the West Country, and met her new helpful neighbours. She’s broken out the thermals, is contemplating NaNoWriMo and has enjoyed another crystal consultation.   What’s Fuelled Their Fire? Nicola’s ahead of the game when it comes to NaNoWriMo, she’s attended a writing sprint day with her writing club which was at her house so she mainly spent the time zapping (writing-based) tolerations. Sarah left her with the farewell gift of a tidy and clean home which means Nicola has a lovely feeling of being on top of all her chores. Judith enjoyed a timely reminder when spending a most unusual 2.5 hours in the hairdresser this week; she received not one but two SEO-based leads. Step away from the machine more often, Judith!   Focus of the Week Paula Gardner was in PR but her first love was always psychology. Careers advice put her and her parents off allowing her to pursue that but now she’s found a way to combine the two. She talks about Chaos Theory which is about how every tiny decision alters your course and how you come to realise you have no control over events, good or bad. This leads on to a discussion of Happenstance Theory which is about getting over the idea of goals, the more open you are, the more serendipity has room to happen. Connect with Paula via her website Scarlet Thinking or on Facebook.   Words of the Week Nicola chooses Autonomous and Judith picks Budget.   Project Updates Judith is taking a few days off to settle into her new home, and Nicola is experimenting with the podcast’s category by submitting it to Health/Self Help.   Who or What’s Impressed? Nicola is impressed by self-published fantasy writer Peter Flannery who she has interviewed for Write Club’s podcast. And Judith, by the care shown above and beyond by those ladies who have looked after her for the last six months, Holistic Helen and hairdresser Anita. She explains why.   Thanks for listening!
