It starts with a note saying your files are being held captive. It ends with a big payout or a lengthy investigation. POLITICO's Sam Sabin breaks down how ransomware attacks go down — and what the U.S. is doing to prevent more of them. Plus, New Jersey's attorney general will lead enforcement at the SEC. And the latest New York mayoral count is voided after ‘test' ballots were included in the tally. Sam Sabin is a cybersecurity reporter for POLITICO. Jeremy Siegel is a host for POLITICO Dispatch. Irene Noguchi is the executive producer of POLITICO audio. Jenny Ament is the senior producer of POLITICO audio. Raghu Manavalan is a senior editor for POLITICO audio. The U.S. was able to recover a portion of the money paid out in the ransomware attack on the Colonial Pipeline. The FBI was able to seize $2.3 million of the $4.4 million that was paid to the Russian hacker group DarkSide. While some details are being kept secret by the Feds, they were able to access the private key to DarkSide's digital bitcoin wallet. Kevin Collier, reporter at NBC News, joins us for the latest twist in this ransomware attack. Next, the FDA has approved a new drug that could help all those that suffer from Alzheimer's disease. This is the first new Alzheimer's drug approved in almost 20 years and targets proteins called amyloids that are thought to play a part in cognitive decline. More studies on its effectiveness will continue to be done and the treatment is very expensive, coming in at over $50,000 a year. Robert Langreth, science and health reporter at Bloomberg News, joins us for more. Finally, Amazon is currently sharing your internet connection with your neighbors and they didn't even give you a chance to opt out. Using Amazon connected devices such as Echo smart speakers and Ring cameras, they launched a new kind of wireless network called Sidewalk. Amazon says it will improve the effectiveness of its devices, but you also have no control over the information shared on this network. Geoffrey Fowler, tech columnist at The Washington Post, joins us for how to turn off the Sidewalk network on your devices. Carl Quintanilla, Jim Cramer and David Faber led off the show by discussing the extension of the tech sell-off dragging down the markets overall -- with Tesla, semiconductors and FAANG names among those under pressure. Cathie Wood's ARK Innovation ETF extending losses of its own, down more than 14-percent for the month. The anchors explored whether now's the time to buy some of the ETF's beaten-down components such as Zoom, Roku and Twilio. They also reacted to what billionaire investor Stanley Druckenmiller told CNBC about Fed policymakers -- he says they are failing to adjust to improved economic conditions by clinging to an emergency policy. Also in focus: The EPA's response to the Colonial Pipeline ransomware attack and what it could mean for gas prices, Biotech firm Gingko Bioworks agreeing to go public in a $15-billion SPAC Deal, What the CEO of Simon Property Group is saying about earnings and what he's seeing from shoppers at the malls, and L Brands' decision to spin off Victoria's Secret and Bath & Body Works into two public companies.
