This week we are debating modern AI systems, especially the commercial ones on just about everyone's lips when talking about CVs, high school term papers, and interview answers.Large Language Models (LLMs), of which ChatGPT and Bard are two examples, are growing in prominence, but will they disrupt the technology world, or are they nothing more than just another blockchain fizzle? In this episode:Are these even actually "AI" models, or really just very fast processing of large data sets? What should I (and should I not) be putting into LLMs? How does the re-teaching based on data entered impact what you should put into public LLMs?What are some valid use cases for LLMs?Does depending on tools like LLMs (or calculators) bring us further from core understanding of how things work? Or should we be OK with the efficiency it brings? How does copyright fit into the LLM expectation and model, and does the legal licensing of training data dull the shine of LLMs?Are the analyses from LLMs skewed not only by the data they chose to use for training, but also by the userbase that uses that LLM?How are any of the "good practise" security and privacy requirements for LLM different from any other systems? Spoiler alert: not at all.Unrelated to AI, we also talk about what happens to all the "smart" things in your house when the internet goes out? What stops working? Way more than you might think...We also have a video channel on YouTube that airs the "with pictures" edition of the podcast. The wireless revolution is shaping and reshaping the broadband industry. WIFI 6, 5G, and rapidly approaching 6G technology create exciting new opportunities in Industry 4.0 networks and IoT devices. The expansion of IoT devices, in particular, showcases this technology's growth, with a predicted 55.7 billion connected devices worldwide by 2025. What will connect those devices, provide higher performance, lower latency, and faster data rates; WIFI 6, WIFI 6E, and 5G networks.Wavelengths host Daniel J. Litwin continued to explore this multitude of next-gen wireless connectivity with Allen Proithis, CEO of GXC. In their previous episode, [insert link to episode 1] Litwin and Proithis broke down the core technologies and ecosystems fueling Industry 4.0 and IoT with a deep dive on some of the most integral advancements in WIFI 6 and 5G shaping advances in use cases and services today. On the conclusion of this two-part conversation, Litwin and Proithis focus on IoT and discuss:How the proliferation of IoT ecosystems and technologies are shaping broadband company strategies and approachesHow network technology like Amazon Sidewalk fits into the rest of the wireless revolutionGXC's cellular mesh technology and the differences between this and other next-gen wireless technologies“We're one of the only providers, one of the very few, that have a turnkey private cellular solution,” Proithis said. “There's a lot of good individual gear. You buy a Gateway here, you buy the different chunks of software you need to control from other places, but then you have to integrate it. And then what happens? You must scale it. It's not designed for enterprise to scale. So, first off, we have a turnkey system; everything's pre-integrated and ready to rock. You put up a couple of lunchboxes with antennas, and you're Rockin' & Rollin'.”About Allen:Allen Proithis is a transformational business leader known for creating breakthrough global programs, launching award-winning new products/services, and developing impactful strategic partnerships over his nearly twenty-year career in telecommunications. Most recently, Proithis led various advisory projects with a wide range of mobile and emerging technologies with private equity and large and emerging companies. This work includes developing 5G and IoT applications, strategies, partnerships, and business models. Proithis is a Penn State graduate with a B.A. in Telecommunications.
This week's EYE ON NPI will stick by your side like a faithful hound- it's the BeagleBoard.org BeaglePlay® Single Board Computer (https://www.digikey.com/en/product-highlight/b/beagleboard/beagleplay). Single Board Computers (SBCs) are like tiny computers that are less powerful than desktops but much better at booting quickly and interfacing with hardware. They also tend to run Linux or BSD because it's easier to get those OS's ported to new chipsets than convincing Apple or Microsoft! This new generation of SBC from BeagleBoard builds on their prior success with the BeagleBoard (https://www.digikey.com/short/1cmb3dtf) and BeagleBone (https://www.digikey.com/short/c52dpz47) by adding a ton more interfaces and connectors so many projects can be built with no soldering. Here's a bullet list to get us started: AM6254 SoC processor 16 GB eMMC storage 2 GB DDR4 memory Supports expansion with OLDI, 4-lane CSI, and QWIIC connectors CSI for compatibility with the BeagleBone AI-654, Raspberry Pi Zero W, and compute modules Full-size HDMI connector Small size: 8 cm x 8 cm USB Type-C® with 5 V @ 3 A input connector mikroBUS connector RJ45 Ethernet connector for Gigabit Ethernet Wi-Fi 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz capabilities BLE and SubG MicroSD slot USB Type-A connector at 480 Mbit Grove connector The main processor is the TI Sitara AM6254 (https://www.digikey.com/short/507rmwr2) with quad-core 64-bit A53 and a Cortex M4 coprocessor. This chip is paired with 2 GB of DDR4 RAM and 16 GB of eMMC storage for a powerful AI-ready chipset that has tons of onboard graphics support such as 1080P HDMI and 4 lanes of OLDI/LVDS. This chip has 9x UARTS, 5x SPIs, 6x I2C's, 3x PWM modules, 3x quad encoders, and 3x CAN-FD, and of course some GPIO. Note there's no ADC or DAC - you'd use SPI to connect those externally. Note this board doesn't have a 2x20 header like a Raspberry Pi, or even the dual header strips from the BeagleBone - but in exchange it stuffs a ton of hardware support directly onto the PCB. For example, if you'd like to add a camera, there's an onboard 22-pin 0.5mm pitch CSI FPC connector that is compatible with the Pi Zero camera cables (https://www.adafruit.com/product/5211) - use that adapter to interface with any low cost Pi Camera modules or compatibles. For video output, a vertical full-sized HDMI port will connect to any monitor or display. In fact we plugged in our desktop monitor and powered the Play with a USB wall adapter, and it immediately came up with an X desktop display. Mouse and keyboard can be added via the USB 2.0 socket, a mini hub will allow multiple devices since there's only one type A port. The BeaglePlay does a great job of including everything you may want to expand your Raspberry Pi with. For example, there's a BQ32002 Real Time Clock (https://www.digikey.com/short/p0h10jbq) with a CR1220 coin cell holder right on board - normally that would have to be included as a separate module. A microSD card slot can be used for storing large amounts of data: unlike most SBCs, there's onboard 16GB eMMC so you don't have to juggle SD cards to install the OS. There's also a ton of expansion ports! For I2C, the onboard QWICC (https://www.sparkfun.com/qwiic) JST SH connector lets you use the hundreds of SparkFun sensors as well as any Adafruit Stemma QT (https://learn.adafruit.com/introducing-adafruit-stemma-qt/what-is-stemma) devices. For UART/PWM/ADC/I2C/GPIO you can use the onboard Grove connector. Finally, for networking either to the Internet or to a sensor network, there's Gigabit Ethernet, WiFi 2.4G and 5G, BLE and Sub-G networking. Yeah that's a lot! It's almost all provided by the onboard TI SimpleLink CC1352P7 (https://www.ti.com/product/CC1352P7) which boasts support for 6LoWPAN, Amazon Sidewalk, Bluetooth 5.2 Low Energy, IEEE 802.15.4, MIOTY, Proprietary 2.4 GHz, Thread, Wi-SUN NWP, Wireless M-Bus (T, S, C, N mode), Zigbee. Note LoRa is not in there, so if you need LoRa that would be added with a separate module. There's also an RJ-11 with Single-Pair Ethernet (https://blog.adafruit.com/2020/08/27/eye-on-npi-harting-single-pair-ethernet-eyeonnpi-digikey-ethernet-digikey-harting-adafruit/) which makes this a good fit to connect to industrial robotics or automation. All this hardware is available at a great price of under $100 at Digi-Key, we already picked one up and we're going to try and get Blinka working on it (https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_Blinka) so that all of our CircuitPython libraries will 'just run' in CPython. Especially given the ready-to-run Stemma QT / Qwiic port on the side, this is an excellent board for a powerful but solder-free configurable SBC. Digi-Key has tons of BeaglePlay's stock for immediate shipment, so order today (https://www.digikey.com/short/jpztmq3w) and you will be playing with your new BeaglePlay by tomorrow afternoon.

Amazon has sold a lot of connected devices, and now it's putting those devices to work. Millions of Ring cameras and Echo speakers sitting in homes across the US have the potential to share a little bit of their internet bandwidth with other Amazon devices that need it. This network, made up almost entirely of consumer gadgets installed in people's homes, is called Amazon Sidewalk. The company has been bolstering Sidewalk for years, adding device after device to this sleeper army of bandwidth-sharing speakers and cameras. Sidewalk has gotten big enough to reach 90 percent of the US population, and it's poised to grow even bigger now that the company has opened up Sidewalk to developers. As more companies build more products that can join the Sidewalk network, the full scale of Amazon's plan will come into focus. This week on Gadget Lab, we talk about Amazon Sidewalk and how the company quietly built up a network that reaches nearly everyone in the US. Show Notes: Read Mike's story about the Amazon Sidewalk developer kit. Also read Amazon's privacy and security white paper for Sidewalk. Oh and here's how to turn off Amazon Sidewalk. Marc Aflalo and Shaun Preece are back with all the latest tech news in this week's Double Tap Canada. And as Steven is still off relaxing, ahem, sorry I mean recuperating, it's down to Marc to tell us all what new tech he's bought this week. Spoiler alert: he's extremely impressed with the new iPad and Apple TV. Next up it's on to music news. Apple have now confirmed the rumours that they are indeed going to be offering loss-less audio on their Apple Music service. This is obviously great news for the audiophiles out there but, in a surprising twist, it turns out Apple's own premium headphones, the AirPods Max, are not able to support loss-less audio. On the same theme, there is also news that Bose has entered the hearing aid market with their SoundControl hearing aids. With Bose's proven track record when it comes to quality audio and with the SoundControl hearing aids being FDA approved and priced far lower than the competition, could this be the start of some positive disruption to the hearing aid market? Back to Apple, now with some genuinely great news when it comes to accessibility. Apple announced a number of software updates that will bring new features and improvements to their customers. First up is a new app called SignTime. This gives hearing impaired customers remote access to a sign language interpreter without the need to book ahead. It's a service aimed at customers visiting an Apple Store or requiring any customer support, and is a very welcome addition. There's also a major update coming to the Apple Watch which will allow the use of hand gestures, such as clenching the fist or performing a pinch motion, to control the watch. One example included the ability to answer an incoming call by simply clenching your fist twice. And that's not all, there's also promised improvements to VoiceOver in the form of photo descriptions and the ability to set display accommodations per individual app, improvements to Switch control that allows the use of sounds to control cursor movement, and more. For anyone feeling that accessibility is always pushed to the background, it's great to see just how much work Apple is putting into making their devices usable by everyone. In other news, Amazon has teamed up with Tile in an effort to offer an alternative to the recently released Apple AirTags. One of the main selling points of the AirTags is that, because of the amount of Apple devices out there, if you do lose something, there's a good chance that its location will be picked up and relayed to you by someone walking past with an iPhone, etc. Well, by teaming up with Amazon, if a Tile tracker is reported as lost then it's location can be found by its new ability to connect to the Amazon Sidewalk network. This is a new feature found in Amazon's smart speakers, which allows devices to connect to the Internet through any of the millions of smart speakers out there in people's houses. Competition is always good, and it's going to be interesting to see how well this new collaboration works. Of course, there's much more talk too, such as Marc's new gaming laptop, the dream of a M1 powered Apple Watches, old man vaccinations and why trampolines are terrible… Welcome to Double Tap Canada!
The premise is convenient. But the e-commerce giant's privacy track record isn't exactly inspiring.

Amazon will launch a new location-tracking mesh network system later this year Amazon is preparing to launch an ambitious networking and location system later this year under the name Amazon Sidewalk. Sidewalk will link smart home devices and other Amazon products using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE), connecting beyond the range of a standard Wi-Fi network. Meant to be operated at the scale of a neighborhood, Sidewalk would turn devices like smart floodlights and home assistants into network bridges, passing along security updates and commands from a central Wi-Fi hub. In addition to transmitting software, the signals allow Sidewalk to triangulate a device's approximate location based on its contacts with other Sidewalk-enabled devices. The system will be built into the Echo, and Tile has also joined the project as the first third-party platform to support the system. Amazon plans to add Ring cameras to the network later, notifying device owners directly when Sidewalk is available to use. A full list of Sidewalk-compatible devices is available on the project landing page. More info here... Hearing Loss and Hi Res Audio A good friend of ours sent us a link to a Youtube video called “Hearing Loss at Age”. This video tries to explain the physical degradation of hearing as we age. The video was produced by Hans Beekhuyzen a Dutch Hifi expert and member of the Audio Engineering Society. The video is a little technical but essentially says that as we age we can not hear the upper octave of the ten octaves between 20 Hertz to 20kHz. That tenth octave starts at 16.7kHz. He says not worry because we still hear 90% of the sound spectrum. So why do we need Hi Res files? We'll get to that. He mentions Nyquist in this video to discuss sampling. This is where the video gets quite technical. He has another video that goes into much more detail about this subject (The truth about Nyquist and why 192 kHz does make sense). What is Nyquist? It is named after electronic engineer Harry Nyquist. Nyquist's theorem states that a periodic signal must be sampled at more than twice the highest frequency component of the signal. In practice, because of the finite time available, a sample rate somewhat higher than this is necessary. Since we want to sample sound up to 20Khz, for those of us lucky enough to hear sound at that frequency, the sample rate should be no lower than 40Khz. Just for completeness, sampling is a representation of sound recorded in, or converted into, digital form. In digital audio, the sound wave of the audio signal is encoded as numerical samples in a continuous sequence. For example, in CD audio, samples are taken 44100 times per second each with 16 bit sample depth. We'll cover sample depth in a bit If a CD is sampled at 44.1Khz. That means it can recreate frequencies up to 22.05Khz, far above what people can hear! So we're all good right? Again why do I need Hi Res Files? Sampling Errors One of the issues with sampling is that it's not perfect and there are errors. This is where the video lost me because I am not an electrical engineer. We'll try to sum it up here. There is an error that is induced because of the sampling rate and that error can show up in the audio spectrum that you can hear. Filtering can reduce this but that too affects the sound as well. The solution is that you can sample at a higher frequency. Hi res files are sampled at 192Khz. That means technically it is capable of capturing frequencies up to 96Khz which is way above what any human can hear. However, there is a benefit in that the errors that are created fall outside what the human can hear. Thus leaving you with a more pure recording of the original signal. There is a price to be paid for this, the file size is much bigger. Bit Depth The other element to this discussion is bit depth. The bits store the amplitude of the sound wave. CDs use 16 bits which equate to 65536 possible values. Hi res files use 24 bits or 1,6777,216 possible values. If you think visually, consider a 16 bit color monitor vs a 24 bit color monitor. The 24 bit monitor will be able to display much finer color gradations and be less blocky. The audio version is that the sound will have finer detail. And it will be at ALL frequencies, more importantly, the ones us old people can actually hear. This to us is the best argument that can be made for Hi res files that we can see… or hear. At least mathematically. Does it Matter? Only you can be the judge of that. It really depends on the style of music you listen to. Is there subtlety in the frequencies that you can hear or is it just loud? Do you want to pay the higher price for hi res audio? Do you have enough storage for the files? Can your equipment play the music? Are you listening on good equipment, especially speakers? By the way, good equipment doesn't have to cost an arm and a leg. But it will cost more than a few hundred dollars. What environment are you listening in? To some there is no other way to enjoy music. To others it doesn't even matter. To us, it's in the middle. Sometimes it doesn't matter but on Friday night with a good bourbon it can be magical.
