Pravin Gordhan, who passed away this week, was a respected ANC Cabinet Minister renowned for his battle against state capture and his two terms as Finance Minister. Tributes have poured in, highlighting his pivotal role in strengthening the South African Revenue Service against state capture, with whistleblower Johann van Loggerenberg dubbing him a “superhero.” In the heady days of the nineties, following Nelson Mandela's release from prison and amidst the negotiations for a new Constitution at Kempton Park, Gordhan was entrusted to lead the Convention for a Democratic South Africa (CODESA) and the Transitional Executive Council (TEC), which set the stage for the country's first democratic elections in 1994. Working closely with Gordhan at that time was Theuns Eloff, who served as the head of administration for the multiparty negotiation process. Eloff described Gordhan in an interview with Biznews as a principled negotiator and facilitator who understood compromise in order to reach the best solution. “There were three individuals during the negotiations who, behind the scenes and not in the public limelight, really made the process work: Mac Maharaj, Fanie van der Merwe, and Pravin Gordhan.” Regarding the criticism levelled at Gordhan over his handling of state-owned enterprises, Eloff said that what he accomplished during the negotiations and as Finance Minister overshadows “any rightful criticisms one might have regarding his time at Public Enterprises.” He concluded that Gordhan's legacy is “largely positive.”

The South African Communist Party (SACP) has denied accusations that it received financial support from the now-defunct VBS Mutual Bank. This rebuttal follows reports suggesting that the party had asked VBS to settle a R3-million conference bill at the Birchwood Hotel in Kempton Park back in July 2017. The request was allegedly made by the then-Gauteng chairperson, Jacob Mamabolo. The SACP has labeled these allegations as baseless and without merit. For more on this Elvis Presslin spoke to Gauteng Cosatu Chairperson, Amos Monyela

Dr. Theuns Eloff, former Executive Director of the FW de Klerk Foundation, former vice-chancellor of North-West University, and a renowned negotiator, is perhaps best known for being the first Afrikaans "dominee" (minister) to negotiate with the ANC in Dakar during their exile. He subsequently led the secretariat at the multi-party negotiations in Kempton Park that preceded the 1994 elections. In this interview with Biznews, he reflects on the ANC's 30 years in power, asserting that the ruling party has 'basically buggered it up' and is incapable of self-correction. While acknowledging that some voters still support the ANC due to the 'Gogo-effect,' he notes that black South Africans increasingly realise the ANC's inability to fulfil its promises. Dr. Eloff predicts that the ANC will secure between 48% and 52% of the vote in the 2024 election, allowing them to maintain power with support from minority parties in Parliament if they fall below the 50% threshold. He predicts a gradual three-phase transition away from ANC rule, believing it would be better for stability where power seeps away in Gauteng and Kwazulu-Natal to the opposition which would limit the ruling party's ability for patronage. He also comments on the Multi-Party Charter and says he believes they could collectively garner 40% of the vote in 2024. Dr. Eloff criticised business and religious leaders for being just too scared to oppose ANC policies in public and called for a federation, similar to the UDF of the past, to take South Africa across the ANC Rubicon
EFF Leader Julius Malema says over 200 public representatives who failed to organise and pay for buses for the party's 10th anniversary celebrations must resign. He was briefing the media on the outcomes of the EFF's Central Command Team meeting in Kempton Park, Johannesburg. Malema says the public representatives which include MPs, MPLs and several councillors across the country failed to adhere to a directive given in January to arrange transport for members attending the party's celebrations at FNB stadium in Soweto. For more on this, Elvis Presslin spoke to one of the former EFF MPs who failed to organize the said buses, Vusi Khoza
In an attempt to oust the African National Congress in the 2024 elections, - seven parties, including the Democratic Alliance (DA), ActionSA, Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) and the Freedom Front Plus have signed a pre-elections agreement to work together should the ANC fail to reach a 50+1 majority at the general polls next year. Following a two-day meeting, earlier this week the charter announced a new name and a set of priorities and principles for power sharing. A number of parties turned down the offer to be part of these deliberations that took place in Kempton Park this past week one of those being the African Christian Democratic Party, we spoke to the ACDP Deputy President, Wayne Thring on their views on this new coalition.
The Multi Party National Convention of South Africa has agreed to a power sharing structure following two-days of deliberations in Kempton Park on Gauteng's East Rand. Leaders of seven political parties met to formulate terms of agreements for their new partnership ahead of next year's general elections. The goal of the seven parties is to remove the ANC from national government for the first time in post-apartheid South Africa. They have also issued an invitation to other likeminded parties to join their ranks. For more on this Elvis Presslin spoke to National Chairperson of ActionSA, Michael Beaumont
The multiparty charter for South Africa has found common ground and agreed on three key agreements that will govern their pre-election coalition pact, according to convention chairperson Prof William Gumede. One of the key agreements outlined by Gumede was the parties' power-sharing agreement, which includes principles on how duties and positions will be allocated. Gumede was addressing media during day 2 of the of the multiparty convention in Kempton Park on Thursday.
The pact by opposition political parties including the DA, IFP, FF Plus, ActionSA, United Independent Movement, Spectrum National Party and Isanco, intended to unseat the ANC in the 2024 elections, which was informally known as the “moonshot pact”, has now officially been named the Multiparty Charter for South Africa. This was announced by independent chair Prof William Gumede during their multiparty convention in Kempton Park, Gauteng, on Wednesday.
The Multi-Party pact will host its National Convention over the next two days, to establish a political alternative to unseat the ANC-led government. The Democratic Alliance and six other political parties will hold the historic Convention at Emperor's Palace, in Kempton Park, Johannesburg - the same venue where Codesa negotiations were held. The multi-party pact will negotiate a pre-election agreement to inaugurate a new government should the ANC fall below 50% of the popular vote in next year's elections. For more on this, Elvis Presslin spoke to Siviwe Gwarube, DA Chief Whip in Parliament
The two-day Multi-Party National Convention is underway in Kempton Park, East of Johannesburg. Seven political parties - the DA, IFP, FF Plus, ActionSA, United Independent Movement, Spectrum National Party and Independent South African National Civics Organisation have converged to craft a pre-election plan with the aim of forming an alternative government to the ANC following next year's elections. Leaders of the various parties have outlined their expectations at the to-day convention. Sakina Kamwendo spoke to reporter Busi Chimombe
DA leader John Steenhuisen says the multiparty pact is set to rescue South Africa from the ANC and EFF. He first announced the multiparty pact in April at the DA's federal congress where he declared the EFF the party's number one enemy. Steenhuisen said the multiparty grouping “will meet at the same venue where Codesa negotiations successfully mapped a way forward for our country at a time of great crisis” and said this week is a time to do so again. The multiparty will hold a national convention in Kempton Park on Wednesday and Thursday.
The Independent South African National Civic Organization has become the latest political party to join the National Convention by opposition parties. ISANCO broke away from the ANC-aligned South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) in 2021 over what it says was the failure to address corruption within the ruling alliance. Alongside the DA, IFP, FF Plus, ActionSA, UIM and SNP, ISANCO becomes the seventh political party that will attend the upcoming National Convention this week, in Kempton Park, Johannesburg. For more on this, Elvis Presslin spoke to ISANCO President Dr. Zukile Luyenge

Schalk Bezuidenhout was tour support for Trevor Noah and won South African Comics' Choice Awards' Newcomer and Break Through Act of the Year. This episode was recorded in May when the South African star brought his show to Soho Theatre in London for a 5-day run, filling the room with South African expats and local Brits alike.Schalk explains the stereotypes attached to Afrikaans and talks about how Afrikaans speakers are often on the receiving end of jokes in South Africa, how the Afrikaans accent can be made fun of, Nevertheless, comedy serves as the unifying factor for the multi-racial post-Apartheid South Africa by creating a shared experienceWhen gigging abroad, the white South African label used to lead the audience to automatically assume the comic has got to be racist, so much so that a disclaimer is required. Multinational mining and mineral processing equipment manufacturer Sandvik launched its new high-tech head office facility, workshop and manufacturing complex today in Kempton Park, east of Johannesburg, on September 9. The facility was officially opened by President Cyril Ramaphosa. The launch of Sandvik's Khomanani facility is a fulfillment of the industrial giant's investment pledge of R350-million, made at the fourth South African Investment Conference six months ago. “Government is hard at work to create the conditions that will enable businesses – both big and small – to emerge, to grow, to access new markets, to create new products and to hire more employees. The establishment of this facility is testament to that commitment,” Ramaphosa said. The Khomanani manufacturing site is one of Sandvik's biggest and most advanced facilities globally, consolidating operations previously undertaken at five separate sites and accommodating 550 employees. For the first time ever, the company now has its soft rock, hard rock and surface businesses all under one roof. Khomanani, which occupies a 62 000 m2 site, can produce underground loaders with over 60% local content, allowing them to be designated as ‘Proudly South African'. Acting VP of Sandvik Southern Africa's sales area Reinhard Reinartz said Sandvik's mining divisions supply the industry's needs with equipment, parts and services, with the aim to fuel growth in a sustainable way. “Our role is not only as an original-equipment manufacturer (OEM) to our customers, but also to be good corporate citizens. Hence, we are investing in localisation, and this new assembly facility relocates activities from China and Finland to South Africa,” he stated. Localisation is a cornerstone of Sandvik's operations, which supports government's aim to build domestic production capacity to supply local and foreign markets, to support broader economic development and to create more jobs. The investment by Sandvik in local manufacturing capacity is an important vote of confidence in South Africa and its mining sector, the President noted. “With industrialisation and manufacturing being essential pillars of South Africa's Economic Reconstruction and Recovery Plan, it is gratifying to see this commitment turned into reality here in Gauteng,” he said. Reinartz said the decision to invest in South Africa was a simple one. “South Africa is still one of the biggest mining markets in the world, with resources including coal, platinum group metals, gold and iron-ore. With both surface and underground mining, there is no question about investing here,” he enthused. The expansion of local production will make South Africa's economy more inclusive and create more opportunities for new entrants into the industrial sector. Greater investment in mining, localisation and beneficiation all contribute to extending mine life, to increasing mining exports, to skills development and to the creation of employment. The President pointed out that the mining machinery and equipment sector also has significant linkages into other parts of the economy. The companies supplying equipment to the mining industry have important backward linkages to major assembly suppliers, sub-assembly and parts suppliers, specialist component suppliers and raw material suppliers. “Increasing local production will contribute significantly to the revival of South Africa's manufacturing industry,” he said. The machines being assembled at Khomanani are the 12 t LS312 flameproof loader for underground coal operations, as well as the LH115 and LH208 loaders, respectively of 5.5 t and 7.7 t capacity, for underground hard rock mining. Not only are these machines being supplied to the Southern African market but Sandvik can also export them. They are produced to the exact same quality standards as Sandvik machines manufactured at its overseas factories. Moreover, the company is able to produce them at a cost which is very competitive by global standa...
This is one of a special series of short episodes speaking to some of the best comedians appearing at this year's Edinburgh Fringe! These episodes will be released daily during the week of 8 August 2022.Schalk Bezuidenhout was born in Kempton Park or as he calls it - 'The New York of the East Rand'. His family and friends stood back as they watched Schalk evolve from an Afrikaans conservative caterpillar into a beautiful dramaqueen butterfly, complete with a moustache and furry afro.
