From the beginning of this podcast I've wanted to focus on books that tell a compelling story about survival, and I find none so compelling as the search for what our response to the Pandemic really was. I've read so many things on the pandemic and the response, but this book stands out.As much as this is a book about the pandemic, it's also a study on relationships. How they can help you and how they can hurt you. It's not what you know, but who you know.  Michael Lewis has always had a knack for storytelling and this book is no exception. He takes the banal subject of epidemiology and turns it into a thriller of the highest order. And, with the benefit of hindsight we can understand a little more about human nature, leadership, and interpersonal relationship. How to Involve Your Employees in Strategic Planning

Do you involve employees in strategic planning? Most people think that strategy is a leader's responsibility and not everyone else's. An employee once told me, “CEOs do strategy; we do the everyday work.” This mindset couldn't be further from the truth, but it's prevalent. When you involve employees in strategic planning, good things happen. First, people begin to understand that strategy is something they do every day and execute it in their daily tasks and project work. Second, they become more engaged in the process because they can ask questions and have a voice. In this week's episode of Reflect Forward: Advice From a CEO, I share how we involved our employees in strategic planning this year and the results. Hint: outstanding. We tried something new so every employee could weigh in before we finalized the strategic plan and the feedback was fantastic. We received some excellent ideas to integrate, and everyone appreciated being part of the process. I also offer tips on thinking and going about strategic planning and ways to involve your employees throughout the process. Vision, buy-in, feedback, discipline, and focus are critical when developing a strategy. You can follow these tips, even if you aren't a CEO and your executive leadership doesn't involve employees in the strategic planning process. Nothing stops you from reviewing company strategy with your team members, getting their opinions and feedback, and engaging them in the process from a team perspective. Great leaders know how to get the best out of their teams and how you lead your team matters. Even if it's different than how executive management leads, don't be afraid to try this process. Your employees will appreciate the effort. Question of the Week This week's question comes from a friend who asked, “What are you reading now?” I wanted to share this question because I am reading a different type of book. The Premonition: A Pandemic Story by Michael Lewis is a fascinating look at why the world, especially the United States, was so ill-prepared for the Covid-19 pandemic. I've learned much about how public health departments and the CDC work. The stories are well told and it's very insightful. I highly recommend it. Follow me on Instagram or LinkedIn. This week on the Carolina Snowflakes Podcast we’re talking about vaccines and how the U.S. is performing in terms of getting all 328 million citizens vaccinated against Covid-19. Although great strides have been made in getting vaccines into arms here in the U.S., we think the numbers could be better. To be honest, we thought vaccinations would be further along by this point. Even the Carolinas are lagging behind most other states in vaccination rates and red states in general seem to be lagging more than the rest.  Coincidence? Hardly. In his new book titled “The Premonition: A Pandemic Story”, Michael Lewis reminds us that at one point, the U.S. was deemed to be “the most prepared country on Earth in handling a pandemic crisis”. Y’all, we had a whole team of scientists dedicated solely to figuring out the complexities of how to successfully navigate an entire nation through a global pandemic. But that team of scientists was promptly fired when the Tangerine Tyrant took office and well, we know what happened after that. So here we are, trying to clean up the mess left behind by an incompetent leader, while in the midst of a still-ongoing global pandemic. We’ve got vaccines that people are afraid to take, a government that many still don’t trust and a group of rightwing nut jobs who genuinely believe their mission is to thwart progress at any cost. All of this is happening within the confines of a pandemic and is happening in a country that just a few years ago was named “most prepared” to handle the mess we’re currently struggling to handle. Yikes! We also can’t help but wonder what the future is going to look like. What are we going to do with those who adamantly refuse to get vaccinated? Yelling at them might make us feel better in the short term, but it isn’t going to fix anything or change any minds. We’ve gotta find some common ground and do our best to approach with understanding. To be clear, understanding is not the same as tolerating, which brings up our next question.  Will limits be set on where unvaccinated Americans can go and what they can do? Who will set those limits, if so? Although we don’t particularly like the term “vaccine passport”, will something like a passport be needed to participate in day-to-day activities? We speculate on these questions plus more. Heck, we even talk about our own experiences and fears surrounding getting the Johnson & Johnson shots. Are we going to grow tails? Have our brains started to pickle yet? We can neither confirm nor deny the possibility. So tune in to hear our Snowflakey thoughts on the current status of vaccinations plus what we think the U.S. is doing right v. what it’s doing wrong in this week’s episode called “Hot Shots”.

Best-selling author Michael Lewis has a knack for extracting page-turning drama out of otherwise mundane and complicated subjects (hello, bond trading and baseball stats). Several of those books have been so good they’ve been turned into award-winning dramas starring half of Hollywood (hello, “The Big Short” and “Moneyball). And now, Lewis takes a crack at the pandemic realty still unfolding. His new book is called “The Premonition: A Pandemic Story.” In it, Lewis uses the first-hand accounts of three main characters to unravel the government’s gross mismanagement of the COVID response, which lead to nearly 600,000 deaths (among the world’s worst outcomes). On this episode of Next Question with Katie Couric, Katie and Michael Lewis talk about the CDC’s shocking downfall, the gaping holes in the public health system and the secret group of doctors (the so-called “Wolverines) helping to single handedly patch that system together. We also get to hear from one of those doctors, Dr. Joe DeRisi, a biochemistry professor at the University of California, San Francisco, and co-president of the Chan-Zuckerberg Biohub.
