An Invisible Disability: The Crisis of Brain Injuries in the Courts

Show NotesBrain injuries are often described as an invisible disability.  You don't necessarily know just by looking at somebody that they have a brain injury, and they may not even know they have one. But inside, things can be very different. The World Health Organization has identified brain injury as a significant public health concern, and traumatic brain injuries are a major cause of death and disability in the United States. Without the right care or resources, it's easy for these injuries to go unnoticed and untreated.  In this episode, Jordyn speaks with Research Assistant Professor Jennifer McMahon about her combined work in Neuropsychology and forensic psychology to protect and advocate for justice-involved individuals. McMahon helps run The Brain Injury Screening Program which is housed in The Denver Forensic Institute for Research, Service and Training, also known as Denver FIRST. Jennifer McMahon is a research assistant professor at the University of Denver. As Program Director at Denver FIRST (Forensic Institute for Research Service and Training) McMahon oversees the community serving forensic programs. She graduated with a PhD in clinical psychology from John Jay College and a master's degree in forensic psychology from DU.More InformationThe Denver Forensic Institute for Research, Service and Training (Denver FIRST) Neuropsychologist Kim Gorgens Helps Rebuild Lives After TBIs Grant Greenlights Denver FIRST's Brain Injuries Screening Program

Ann reported on The Winter People by Jennifer McMahon (Anchor 2015)West Hall, Vermont, has always been a town of strange disappearances and old legends. Themost mysterious is that of Sara Harrison Shea, who, in 1908, was found dead in the field behindher house just months after the tragic death of her daughter. Now, in present day, nineteen-year-old Ruthie lives in Sara's farmhouse with her mother, Alice, and her younger sister. Alice has always insisted that they live off the grid, a decision that hasweighty consequences when Ruthie wakes up one morning to find that Alice has vanished. Inher search for clues, she is startled to find a copy of Sara Harrison Shea's diary hidden beneaththe floorboards of her mother's bedroom. As Ruthie gets sucked into the historical mystery, shediscovers that she's not the only person looking for someone that they've lost. But she may bethe only one who can stop history from repeating itself.Creepy, goosebumpy, scary ghost stories aren't only for cool fall evenings. It turns out that themiddle of January in remote Vermont when it's buried in snow is also the perfect setting for apsychological thriller filled with ghosts.Written by Jennifer McMahon, this is two stories in one with the common factor the setting of anold farmhouse on a secluded road in the very small town of West Hall, Vermont. The storiesalternate: One takes place in January 1908, including flashbacks about 20 years earlier. Theother takes place in the present day, also in January. This thickly-wooded homestead includesan outcropping of giant boulders that looks so much like a hand, the area has always beencalled Devil's Hand. Wander too far into the woods, and you might not make it out alive.Something is going on here, and those who have seen it believe there are ghosts in this spookyforest. It's January 1908. Sara Harrison Shea and her husband Martin Shea live in the farmhouse withtheir little girl, Gertie, who is 8 years old. One day she is found dead, having fallen 50 feet downa well. Sara collapses in grief, but writes her fears, anguish, and hopes into a secret diary. Saracomes to an untimely and gruesome death, which remains the stuff of legend in West Hall ahundred years later. She hid her diary in one of the hidey-holes in the old farmhouse, and manypeople want to find it because in it she supposedly left instructions on how to raise the dead tolife.Meanwhile in the present-day, Alice Washburne lives in the same farmhouse with her twodaughters, Ruthie, 19, and Fawn, 6. Alice, who is widowed, has lived off the grid for about 20years. No computer. No cell phone. No links to anyone in the world. Even in this small town, noteveryone knows who she is. On New Year's Day, Alice disappears. More than anything, Alicedislikes the police, so Ruthie knows she shouldn't call the cops. (This is one of several plotpoints—some small, some big—that make the mystery work. If Ruthie did call the cops orsomeone didn't lock her cell phone in the car so she didn't have it when she really needed it,things would have worked out quite differently. A little cheesy, perhaps.) The two stories—pastand present—converge as Ruthie discovers dark secrets about her own past and thosesurrounding this strange house. This is one of the creepiest stories I have ever read, and while the plots from both time periodsare rather farfetched, the book is a page-turner. It will keep you up past your bedtime, and if youread it then, you may very well have nightmares.Tracey's book was A Dark and Snowy Night by Sally Goldenbaum, #5 in the Seaside KnittersMystery Series (Kensington 2022)It's holiday season in the picturesque, coastal town of Sea Harbor, Massachusetts! But in USAToday bestselling author Sally Goldenbaum's latest Seaside Knitters Society mystery, theknitting club sleuths will have to take a break from crafting cozy Christmas gifts to investigate amurder at the Mayor's holiday party.Winter in Sea Harbor is a feast for the senses—crackling bonfires, the scent of snow in the saltyair, carols ringing out on the village green. This year, the Seaside Knitters have a sackful ofobligations in addition to their usual Christmas preparations. Izzy is so overloaded with knittingclasses that she hires an extra salesperson, but the new addition has trouble fitting into the yarnshop's holiday spirit. Cass, juggling the stresses of running her lobster fishery, has finally founda nanny for her active toddler. Molly Flanigan seems practically perfect in every way—until shesuddenly disappears, taking Cass's beloved rescue mutt with her...Meanwhile, the holidays are kicking off in style at Mayor Beatrice Scaglia's holiday party, wherea well-dressed crowd admires the mayor's sumptuous new home and the celebrity chef cateringthe event. An additional treat for Ben and Nell Endicott at the festive affair is reconnecting with adear college friend, Oliver Bishop. But it's not just reunions and the appetizers that are to-die-for.Before the party-goers can toast the beginning of Sea Harbor's festive season, the chef—andyoung wife of the Endicott's old Harvard friend—is found dead beneath the mistletoe.Izzy, Birdie, Nell, and Cass must uncover the pattern to these mysteries to remove suspicionfrom those they love, bring a murderer to justice—and keep Sea Harbor's holiday magic fromvanishing into the chill winter air...TRIVIALast week's question was:Which mystery author was also a barrister?a. Linda Howardb. Patricia Moyesc. Eileen Dewshurstd. Nancy SpainThe answer is c. Eileen Dewhurst. She wrote the Hilary Tamar series This series of fourbooks, described as "legal whodunits", were written over a period of twenty years. Their primarysetting is the top floor of 62 New Square at Lincoln's Inn where four young junior barristers havetheir chambers: Michael Cantrip, Desmond Ragwort, Selena Jardine and Timothy Shepherd. While the last named only appears sporadically, taxes barrister Julia Larwood, who works in theadjacent premises, is a regular visitor and is in effect the fifth member of the group. Thesecharacters are in some ways thinly drawn (Selena is highly organized and efficient, Julia isclumsy and chaotic, Cantrip is casual and modern, Ragwort is elegant and conservative), nevercommunicating in anything other than an ironic tone, so that even when they are in deadlydanger the atmosphere remains uniformly light-hearted.This week's question is:Author Gary Phillips has edited several anthologies over the years. One that won particular accolades wasone that paid homage to a past president. Which one?a. Nixonb. Bushc. Washingtond. ObamaTune in next week for the answer.

An anthology of original horror stories edited by Bram Stoker Award® winners Vince A. Liaguno and Rena Mason that showcases authors from historically excluded backgrounds telling terrifying tales of what it means to be, or merely to seem, “other” Offering new stories from some of the biggest names in horror as well as some of the hottest up-and-coming talents, Other Terrors will provide the ultimate reading experience for horror fans who want to examine fear of “the other.” Be they of a different culture, a different background, a different sexual orientation or gender identity, a different belief system, or a different skin color, some people simply aren't part of the community's majority—and are perceived as scary. Humans are almost instinctively inclined to fear what's different, and there are a multitude of individuals who have spent far too long on the outside looking in. And the thing about the outside is . . . it's much larger than you think. In Other Terrors, horror writers from a multitude of underrepresented backgrounds have created stories of everyday people, places, and things where something shifts, striking a deeper, much more primal, chord of fear. European investment in ophthalmology MedTech is more opportunistic than strategic says Klaus Stockemann, managing partner of Peppermint VenturePartners in Berlin. With fewer venture capitalists focused on the market, they are more receptive to cold calls and impromptu pitches at medical conferences. That's one of the many insights provided when new OIS Podcast host Sophia Pathai, MD, PhD, MPH caught up with three top-tier VCs who focus on ophthalmology devices and technology. After recalling their nonlinear backgrounds, Stockemann;  Diana Saraceni, cofounder of Panakes Ventures (Milan); and Jennifer McMahon, a partner at Seroba VC (Dublin) discussed the activity in the MedTech space as of late. One piece of news that got Western Europe talking: Belgium-based iStar's strategic alliance with AbbVie.What else? The guests agreed that ophthalmology's active, entrepreneurial spirit, the high demand for microtized surgical devices, and the strong M&A market all make for an exciting time to invest in ophthalmology. For those in need of their services, the guests offer a wealth of advice. McMahon recommends that business owner/innovators have a good grasp of their position in the market—not only what's on the market now, but what might be in a few years.Saraceni stresses relevancy: name-dropping does not impress her. Instead, highlight the results you and your executive team have accomplished that relate to your project.Listen to the podcast for more insights, including:How aspiring entrepreneurs and early start-up founders can refine their pitch and approach to ensure the best chance of success. What makes ophthalmology devices an attractive investment area. What's exciting now in the ophthalmology therapeutics and MedTech. The advantages of the ophthalmology community above other therapeutic areas. How the VC role has evolved over the past few years and the speakers' vision moving forward.Their forecasts for the future of ophthalmology MedTech over the next 10 years.[Listen to the Podcast]

Summary: Grab your towel and flip flops, we're hanging out poolside this week. Today, Holly and Devin discuss books featuring pools. They discover that Holly has always thought pools were creepy (thanks, “Are You Afraid of the Dark?”) and that sometimes a pool doesn't even have to have water in it to act as a plot device! Devin prefers pools to the ocean, and Holly doesn't make fun of her for it at all. Overall, it's another fun summer theme that carries polar opposite energies depending on the book genre.  Topics Discussed: The Heart (2:46): Devin discussed The People We Meet On Vacation by Emily Henry, a book that elaborates upon the “will they, won't they” friendship of Poppy Wright and Alex Nilson over a decade, culminating in a less-than-ideal vacation in Palm Springs. Poppy is vibrant, outgoing, and adventurous. Alex loves khakis and a quiet night with a book. They've been going on summer vacations for a decade, but nothing is that simple. Her key takeaways were: The friends to lovers trope can feel so overdone and boring, but Henry goes above and beyond to refresh it in this book that centers around a Palm Springs cheap motel but really delves deeply into what makes friendship platonic, romantic, and enduring through time. The pool in this novel is found empty after an unfortunate poop accident, and though there is no lounging and splashing, the pool acts as a catalyst for the tension to build and ultimately break between Poppy and Alex.  A delightful summer read, this novel harkens back to the Meg Ryan Rom-Com golden era; it brings the steam of modern romance with the nostalgia and energy of When Harry Met Sally.  The Dagger (16:54): Holly discussed The Drowning Kind by Jennifer McMahon, a supernaturally creepy novel that follows social worker Jax as she navigates her relationship with a manic and unstable sister, Lexie. Things come to a head when Jax receives nine missed calls and frantic voicemails from her one night. The next day, Jackie finds out that Lexie is dead – drowned in the deep, dark spring-fed pool they grew up swimming in at their grandmother's Vermont house, Sparrow Crest. Her key takeaways were: McMahon balances a dual timeline narrative incredibly well; they directly relate to one another and the same core plot, even though they are told from different moments in history.  The setting of an old Vermont house with a spring-fed pool out back that was rumored to be bottomless is the perfect backdrop for a supernaturally spooky plotline and exploration into family drama.  McMahon delves into the concept of a wishing well, of water being sacred and gifts from gods, to give the book good historical grounding and a modern twist on a benign children's story to fantastic effect.  Hot On the Shelf (31:15): Holly: The Swimmers by Julie Otsuka  Devin: The Music of What Happens by Bill Konigsberg What's Making Our Hearts Race (35:19): Devin: Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi on Disney+  Holly: New reading spaces (including outdoor) in California Instagram: @heartsanddaggerspod Website: www.heartsanddaggerspod.com If you like what you hear, please tell your friends and rate and review us on Apple Podcasts and Spotify so that we can find our perfect audience.

Vermont Author Jennifer McMahon, whose new novel is The Children on the Hill (Simon & Schuster).  Jennifer's recent reads include: The Fervor, by Alma Katsu My Heart Is a Chainsaw, by Stephen Graham Jones This week's Write the Book Prompt was generously suggested by my guest, Jennifer McMahon, who sent me this note: At its heart, The Children on the Hill is an exploration of monsters and monstrousness. So my writing prompt is to create your own monster! What type of monster is it? Does it have a name? What does it look like? What does it sound like? Where does your monster live? Who can see it? What does your monster eat? What special abilities does it have? Can it run fast? Is it super strong? Can it hibernate for years? What does your monster want most? What's stopping your monster from getting it? What is your monster most afraid of? Now, write two scenes, the first from the point of view of a person (maybe a character you've already been working with) coming across your monster. Where do they meet? Is your monster a danger to this character? How does your character feel about this creature? Write the same scene from the monster's point of view. What is the monster thinking and feeling? Is your monster afraid of the person, or is it longing for connection? Or is it just really, really hungry? Good luck with your work in the coming week, and tune in next week for another prompt or suggestion. Music Credit: Aaron Shapiro 732

Today, I have the pleasure of interviewing Jennifer McMahon. We'll be talking about her genre-defying novel, The Children on the Hill. Jennifer McMahon has been lauded by Chris Bohjalian (The Flight Attendant) as “a worthy literary descendent of Shirley Jackson.” She is the author of eleven novels, including the New York Times bestsellers Promise Not to Tell and The Winter People. McMahon is in the LibraryReads Hall of Fame. She lives in Vermont with her partner, Drea, and their daughter, Zella.   In this episode Jennifer McMahon and I discuss: Why she had multiple false starts on her latest novel and what finally inspired her to finish. How she developed the idea of secrets and her process for layering them throughout the plot. What is a monster, what makes something monstrous, and why that distinction is important. Plus, her #1 tip for writers. For more info and show notes: diymfa.com/411

A big welcome back to JESS MONTGOMERY! We have a lovely chat about the new entry in her Kinship Series, THE ECHOES: A Novel. Emily and Chris are both currently reading DEATH ON THE NILE by Agatha Christie for a buddy read with Our Mystery Man, John Valeri. Stayed tuned for our conversation with John about the novel and the new movie adaptation coming up on episode 155. The big news in our lives is that we FINALLY got to head back to Manhattan for some BIBLIO-ADVENTURING with Aunt Ellen! It was so good to be back in the city that we love after a two-year pandemic-induced separation. We got our library cards renewed at the NYPL, walked to the Morgan Library & Museum to see their GWENDOLYN BROOKS exhibit, walked through Central Park for lunch, and then on to the NY Historical Society Museum & Library to see their exhibit, PICTURE THE DREAM: THE STORY OF THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT THROUGH CHILDREN'S BOOKS. A bonus surprise was walking through the ROBERT CARO exhibit showcasing his writing process. After that, we walked some more to check out a new-to-us bookstore, WESTSIDER RARE & USED BOOKS. What a day! In our Just Read segment, Emily talks about HUNGRY HEART: ADVENTURES IN LIFE, LOVE, AND WRITING by Jennifer Weiner, PEARL by Tabitha King, and TRUE BIZ by Sara Nović. Chris read THE CHILDREN ON THE HILL by Jennifer McMahon, and three picture books: I AM AN AMERICAN: THE WONG KIM ARK STORY by Martha Brockenbrough, Grace Lin, and Julia Kuo; OSNAT AND HER DOVE: THE TRUE STORY OF THE WORLD'S FIRST FEMALE RABBI by Sigal Samuel and Vali Mintzi; WE ARE STILL HERE: NATIVE AMERICAN TRUTHS EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW by Traci Sorell and Frane Lessac. We also buddy read MAUD MARTHA by Gwendolyn Brooks, a novel we both highly recommend if you can find it! It is out of print but there is a new edition coming out in the UK in early May.

Amanda and Jenn discuss several geographically specific reads, COVID art, memories in sci-fi, and more in this week’s episode of Get Booked. Follow the podcast via RSS, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or Stitcher. Feedback This Is Paradise by Kristiana Kahakauwila (rec’d by Carol) Obernewtyn by Isobelle Carmody (rec’d by Laura) A Painted House by John Grisham, Crooked Letter, Crooked Letter by Tom Franklin (rec’d by Suzanne) Can I Be Your Dog? by Troy Cummings (rec’d by Rachel) Good Enough to Eat by Jae and Alison Gray, CW: it deals with real addiction and alcoholism (rec’d by Rose) The Library of Legends by Janie Chang (rec’d by Susan) Questions 1. My question is: can you suggest a mystery set in any of the remaining states? They are Alabama, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and Utah. I’d like to accomplish this using unique authors for each state, so another Grisham, for example, would not work. Any kind of mystery will do, preferably somewhere in the broad middle between cloying cozy and gruesomely gory. I included my list so far for reference. Thank you! -Suzanne 2. What are your favorite books set in Mexico? I just read Gods of Jade and Shadow and I loved it…and then I read Mexican Gothic, which I also loved up until the point where it made me gag (so much squick). Anyway, reading Silvia Moreno-Garcia has really piqued my interest in Mexico as a setting, and I’d love some recommendations for further reading. Thank you!  -Sara 3. For me, COVID art has been a really helpful way to cope in the last year whether it be music, TV, or written works that deal with pandemic realities head on. Because I work in the restaurant industry, I experienced only a very short quarantine period before being back out in the world, and I think I appreciate the aspect of getting on with life in the face of the ongoing trauma and fear and still finding plenty of joy in small moments. The only book I’ve found dealing directly with COVID (aside from specifically scientific stuff, which I’m far less interested in) is Intimations by Zadie Smith. What else is out there?  Thanks! -Carol 4. I’m looking for a recommendation for two very different sub genres of thriller. I recently read City of the Lost by Kelley Armstrong and it reminded me a little bit of The Blinds by Adam Sternbergh. I wondered if you know of any other books like this “remote town, cut off from the rest of the world, group of people living there who have to be self sufficient but all have lots of secrets and a murder happens.” I also recently read One by One by Ruth Ware and I wasn’t a fan, I’m not looking for stranded people, as much as a group that chose to go live remotely and cut off from the world. Second, I’m currently reading The Seven Doors by Agnes Ravatan and I really like the Scandinavian setting. I also love the “is there something supernatural or is this just a thriller element?” The other book I loved similar to this was I Remember You: A Ghost Story by Yrsa Siguroardottir. This also had the remote Scandinavian setting with the “maybe” supernatural something happening. Any help in these two areas would be awesome!   -Heather 5. I love the show. I would really love a recommendation on rotten food I am not talking about the Netflix show, I would love if it had a variety of foods that as human beings we eat that are disturbing to others but as a culture it is acceptable as well as the process of how this came to be. For instance, where did we get the idea of cheese and how it was safe to eat or how balut became delicacy to eating casu marzu or even monkey’s brains. I want to find a book on all these fascinating foods and how they came to be introducing into a culture as well as an acceptable food something from all cultures. -Grace 6. I recently finished reading Mem by Bethany C. Morrow and really loved it and I couldn’t stop thinking about it. What I loved about it is how it discusses the importance of memories regardless of how bad they may seem/ Mixed with the sc-fi, alternate history elements, and the amazing writing, this book is just everything I ever needed! Do you have any book recs with similar vibes/themes? Please, only fiction, and preferably under 350 pages. I also wanted to say that I really love this podcast and that I discovered many of my favorite books because of it. Keep it up! -Passant 7. I am looking for some book recommendations about marriages that are struggling in a fictional setting. Struggles that are not related to affairs or already at divorces door. I want to see the internal dialogue/conflict and how two people navigate a marriage that’s not full of love anymore and can hopefully come back from that. Thank you so much for all the hard work you guys do to help us readers find what we’re looking for! You are much appreciated and needed -Alexis Books Discussed Alabama: The Wife Upstairs by Rachel Hawkins Utah: The 19th Wife by David Ebershoff (cw: homophobia) Kingdom Cons by Yuri Herrera, transl Lisa Dillman The Hummingbird’s Daughter by Luis Alberto Urrea (tw: rape, child abuse) The Premonition by Michael Lewis Together, Apart, by Erin A. The Drowning Kind By Jennifer McMahon "McMahon has a gift for creating creepy atmosphere and letting spooky suggestions linger in the mind. She's also adept at weaving legends and stories into the fabric of what feels like real life, because her characters are so believably vulnerable. For best results, read it on a dark and stormy night—in a well-lit room, far away from the water.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review) "The Drowning Kind is both a haunting exploration of grief and a tale that will make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. You'll stay up late reading, but take my advice: whatever you do, don't go in the water."—Simone St James, New York Times bestselling author of The Sun Down Motel "[A] taut supernatural thriller . . . I’ve written about ghosts, serial killers, shape shifting monsters, an evil fairy king, a kidnapping rabbit, and now, a terrifying swimming pool. My first novel was, at its heart, a ghost story. That novel drew me to write about the unexplained, the dark side, the fears that keep me awake at night, the way the past haunts the present. When studying writing in college and grad school, again and again I was told: Write what you know. But over the years, I have developed my own mantra, one which is so vital to who I am and what I do that I had it tattooed on my wrist: Write what scares you. I live in Vermont (in a creepy old Victorian on a hill) with my partner, Drea, and our daughter, Zella. When I’m not writing, I spend a lot of time exploring the dark Vermont woods and seeking out haunted places, real and imagined. Welcome to the Green Mountain State, lovely, liberal . . . haunted!!Our guest is to ghost-stories what Ben and Jerry are to ice cream – Vermont’s resident ghost-writer-in-chief, Jennifer McMahon. Her new novel, The Drowning Kind takes us back to the small towns, local stores and eerie histories typical of her fiction, but with an added turning of the screw – it’s not the house that’s haunted, it’s the pool out back. If that sounds cheesy, it ISN’T. The Drowning Kind is an alternative type of ghost story – how alternative, and whether what lurks in the pool is even a ghost – are both subjects we dive into. Jen tells me about why she finds such darkness in Vermont’s pleasant green hills, and I get very excited to talk to someone about the state’s folklore! Oh, and there are index cards. Many, many index cards. For the technique-geek, or the aspiring novelist, this is some serious insight into the creative process of a master plotter. As promised in the show, here is some further detail on her system. Enjoy! The Drowning Kind is out from Gallery Books on April 6th. Other books we discussed include: The Invited (2019), by Jennifer McMahonThe House Next Door (1978), by Anne River SiddonsThe Haunting of Hill House (1959), by Shirley JacksonWe Have Always Lived in the Castle (1962), by Shirley Jackson“The Monkey’s Paw” (1902), by W. We have already worked on a project together called the Alliance as a part of Modern People which Jen founded to help people purposefully navigate the pandemic, but I think we both know that the best is yet to come.Today's conversation is a true reflection of the banter between two women incredibly passionate about unleashing purpose in the world for individuals and organisations. And it's a conversation with two women willing to dive into the intersection between the professional and the personal, the strategic and the spiritual, the truth and the transformation. So as long as you're not driving get your pen and a journal ready - you will need them to jot down the many notes of inspiration - because Jen McMahon is one of the most inspiring people I know.

We love our #sporting heroes in Australia. We celebrate them, we admire them, we want to hear their stories. But what happens when a sporting dream doesn't go to plan? What happens when the lines between “toughening the athlete” #coaching practices and abuse become blurred? What happens when a sporting culture that normalises abuse leaves a long-lasting legacy on your life — and the life of countless others? This is Dr Jennifer McMahon's deeply personal story. An Australian swimming gold and silver medallist at the 1990 Auckland Commonwealth Games, Jennifer went from being on top of the world one minute to her dream crashing down the next. This year, she received an OAM for her research into helping protect #athletes from abuse in sport. Even for employers already offering flexible arrangements, hot desking or remote working, we’re on the brink of our largest 'workplace experiment'. How can employers ensure their teams are working effectively and ultimately, with purpose from home? Here’s some tips to remote working with purpose using the 3E model: 1. Experience - this new way of working should be framed as a positive and progressive pursuit, rather than a reactionary measure. 2. Engagement - whether employees are working remotely or in an office, engagement is the most common challenge. When employees are connected to their own purpose through the work they’re doing and feel aligned to the broader vision and purpose, engagement happens naturally. 3. Ergonomics - if your employees aren’t physically comfortable in their space and able to sit for the periods of time required to perform their role, it won’t happen.

Are the rumors true? Have we decided to branch out into property management? Well, I’ve got some exciting news to share with you. Looking to sell a home in Athens, Georgia? Click here for a Home Price Evaluation Looking to buy a home in Athens, Georgia? Click here to perform a full home search You may have been wondering—are the rumors true? Are we doing property management? I’m excited to announce that we have opened up a second brokerage that will focus on strictly managing rental properties for clients. We’ve named our sister company Iron Horse Property Management. I had clients come to me for years asking me to branch out into property management, and I was always hesitant because my main focus was on sales. I wanted to be great at sales and make that the main focus of Woodall Realty Group. Now I feel like the timing is better than it was in the past. The reason for this is our sales team is staffed with four full-time agents in addition to myself, our systems and processes are really dialed in, and we helped over 200 families last year. We expect to help even more families this year, and our business is steady enough that I felt we could finally branch out into property management. A big concern that I’ve had was that I didn’t have the time during the day to focus on the daily aspects of moving tenants in, handling repairs, moving tenants out, and all the things that come along with property management. My solution was to find and hire a great property manager who has years of experience and, in my opinion, is one of the best in Athens, Jennifer McMahon. “YOU’LL GET THE SAME GREAT SERVICE THROUGH IRON HORSE PROPERTY MANAGEMENT THAT YOU GET THROUGH WOODALL REALTY GROUP.” Jennifer has worked with two other property managers in Athens over the years and has done a great job. She’s a go-getter, a hard worker, and she will be handling the day-to-day aspects of the property management. She’ll be taking care of all of the things that you as a landlord don’t want to do and help things run more smoothly. So, now we will be able to offer the same great service through Iron Horse Property Management that you get through Woodall Realty Group. If you have rental property that you’re managing yourself, or you’re dissatisfied with your current property management, give me or Jennifer a call. Our goal with Iron Horse Property Management is to give you peace of mind while maximizing the return on your investment. We want to make owning rental property a completely passive investment for you so that you just receive income each month and not have to worry about it. If you or someone you know has questions about Iron Horse Property Management or any other concerns, give us a call. We would love to be here for you.
