On April 27, 2019, a 19-year-old walked into the Chabad of Poway synagogue and opened fire; killing one woman and injuring others, including the synagogue’s Rabbi. Through the sorrow, Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein had a message for San Diego and grew to become an international symbol of peace. But prosecutors say he had a dark secret. Just weeks ago, Rabbi Goldstein pleaded guilty for his involvement in an elaborate scheme to steal thousands of dollars from taxpayers and his own synagogue. In this week’s episode of Into San Diego, we’re breaking down how investigators say the scheme worked, the major players involved, and the response from the local community. Today we hopscotched across a range of issues including an election preview here in Poway, plus thoughts on masks, the economy and the Padres 2020 start. Many of our listeners and viewers enjoy that I cover local issues, so I also offered comments on the potential sale of the Poway Center for the Performing Arts, the Poway protesters, Rabbi Goldstein and some shoutouts to some Poway personalities. I spend time on the kookiness of mask protests and the likely economic downturn that is waiting for us around the corner. Good people are always mystified by what drives a "regular" person to plan and execute the deliberate and premeditated cold-blooded murder of innocent people, let alone in a house of worship. What is going on in this person's twisted mind and dark heart as he attacks men, women and children of faith during their prayers and celebrations?! How can a human being stoop to such obscene hate and cruelty? Our hearts are shattered as they go out to the husband, daughter, family and community of Lori Gilbert-Kaye, who was cruelly murdered by a terrorist in a heinous attack on Jews gathered in prayer at Chabad-Lubavitch of Poway last Shabbat, the final day of Passover. But within the tragedy and grief -- and the demonstration of the ugliest within humans -- another story has emerged, one that is more powerful than the senseless crime perpetrated: The story of the best within humans. Lori Kaye gave her life to save her Rabbi and others in her shul. Rabbi Goldstein through his actions and words, exhibited the noble majesty and dignity of a soul’s capability: not focusing on himself, but on his calling and mission. Millions, if not billions of people are being gripped by the heart-wrenching, yet formidable words of Rabbi Yisroel Goldstein, the Rabbi of the Poway community who survived the attack. In articles and interviews, from his hospital bed and at the funeral service, Rabbi Goldstein is relentlessly focusing neither on his pain and loss, nor on fear and anger, but on his determination to transform this tragedy into a force of goodness and kindness. Please join Rabbi Jacobson as he discusses this tragedy and the lessons it provides us about both the worst and best in human beings, and above all -- what we can do in face of such darkness, both short-term and long-term, in preventing such travesties from happening ever again.
The Global Inspiration is palpable, but what happens next?
Poway is still coming to terms with the shock and pain from the shooting at the Congregation Chabad of Poway. In this podcast I share my thoughts on the reactions of fellow Powegians and ideas to move forward positively. We discuss the community rallying in support and solidarity with the Chabad in various vigils in Poway where people came together to cry together, pray together and support one another. We discuss the leadership of Mayor Steve Vaus and the tone he struck with people in the community. We talk at length about Poway Unified School District Superintendent Dr. Marian Kim-Phelps and her upstanding efforts to drive out hate in the classroom and the community. We discuss the goodness of Lori Gilbert-Kaye. We talk about Rabbi Goldstein and his trip to Washington DC for the National Day of Prayer. I took time to talk with friends and neighbors both in person and in social media. The grief in the community was strong, but still people were offering quality ideas to bring people together to drive out hate. We talk about addressing reality (This IS Poway), showing love with others and educating people on a range of cultures, religions and traditions. I spoke at length about the topic of Identity Politics, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the Declaration of Independence, Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. I also discuss Free Speech, Hate Speech and difficult conversations. I invite my fellow community members to join me here for a podcast conversation. I would enjoy learning your thoughts and hope our neighbors can learn and grow as we work our way through these difficult issues. On April 27, 2019, the last day of Passover, a vicious anti-Semite entered the Chabad of Poway synagogue and started shooting. Before being stopped, he murdered one worshipper and injured several others, including the congregation’s rabbi, Yisroel Goldstein. Speaking to the press after the attack, Rabbi Goldstein said something truly remarkable. In the wake of the chaos and violence swirling around him, this hasidic rabbi suggested that a national response to the shooting should include establishing a daily moment of silence in American public schools in which “children can start the day pausing and thinking, 'Why am I created? Why am I here? And what am I going to do?’” In making his unconventional suggestion, Rabbi Goldstein was echoing Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, the late rebbe of Chabad-Lubavitch. In the 1980s—in the shadow of high crime rates and the attempted assassination of President Reagan—the Lubavitcher Rebbe launched a campaign to have American schools, Jewish and non-Jewish alike, begin their days with just such a moment of silence. In this podcast, Jonathan Silver is joined by Rabbi Dovid Margolin, associate editor at Chabad.org, to discuss the Rebbe’s campaign. Rabbi Margolin reminds us of the broader context of the times, explores the Rebbe’s conviction that Jewish ideas can help improve American society, and explains why the Rebbe believed that something as simple as a brief moment of reflection for schoolchildren could influence hearts and minds for the better. Musical selections in this podcast are drawn from the Quintet for Clarinet and Strings, op. 31a, composed by Paul Ben-Haim and performed by the ARC Ensemble as well as “Great Feeling” by Alex Kizenkov.

ABOUT THIS EPISODE Rabbi Warren Goldstein was both the youngest and first native-born ever elected as Chief Rabbi of South Africa. In the thirteen years since assuming that post, he has engaged at every level of South African Jewish and civic society. His crowning achievement perhaps has been the Shabbos (or Shabbat) Project; what began as an initiative to encourage South Africans to observe one Shabbat all together on a single Friday-Saturday, has mushroomed into a global grassroots movement spanning over 1,300 in 95 countries and 10 languages. In this interview, Rabbi Goldstein discusses the Shabbat Project, of course, but also describes his ascension to the Chief Rabbinate, meeting Nelson Mandela, thoughts about Apartheid and other insights into the state of the Jewish world. -------------------- ABOUT THIS PODCAST Jews You Should Know introduces the broader community to interesting and inspiring Jewish men and women making a difference in our world.
