Did you know that recent budget cuts by the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) have significantly impacted educational programs for students with disabilities? In California's Poway Unified School District, a program called "Charting My Path for Future Success," which assisted nearly 1,100 high schoolers nationwide in planning for life after graduation, was abruptly halted due to these cuts. This termination has left students like Logan Damroth, who was exploring career options in science, without crucial support for their future aspirations.

The election season is really hot, and we are hearing more and more irrationality from candidates, the media and party supporters. What ever happened to thinking for yourself? People who live in poor states have higher homeownership levels. Does this seem counter intuitive to you? Poway Life Time Fitness survey and proposal to City Council. Poway Unified School District in trouble again. Got a question or comment? Drop your take in the live chat on Facebook, X or YouTube. It's Wednesday, July 10, 2024. This is what John Riley thinks. Irrationality in Politics It's an election year and the propaganda is thick. Candidates and their supporters put forward outrageous lies or completely irrational ideas in the hope of supporting their candidate or defeating others. The news media has been helpful in pointing out some of this, but in other ways complicit in spreading the disinformation. It's easy to get caught up in the flurry of irrationality, particularly if you are a partisan for the Democratic or Republican parties. Tribalism is so strong, that people completely throw reason out the window. It is more important to remain loyal to one's tribe than to dig for the truth. What ever happened to “Question Authority?” What ever happened to “Think for Yourself?” Instead, politicians, the media, and their supporters all are reading from a common set of talking points. Examples: Biden's mental state, Marie Kondo Trump's criminal past and demands for dictatorship. Mass deportation NIMBY vs Property Rights Housing prices are rising because corporations are buying all the homes or too many vacant homes. Social Security, Project 2025, blame GOP, denial about fiscal crisis. EV myths (can't drive long range, burn fossil fuels, etc.) Many people mistakenly believe these common political myths... or they throw them around as scare tactics to frighten or trick voters. In fact, none of these myths are true. Republicans are for small government, spending cuts. Republicans are for getting the govt out of your personal life. Republicans are for low taxes. Republicans are conservative. Bush tried to privatize Social Security Clinton reduced the national debt. Democrats are against corporate welfare. Democrats are for equality. Democrats are pro-choice. Democrats are fiscally responsible. Democrats are liberal. None of these are true. But many people still think they are. It's irrationality! What's going on in Poway? John shares stories about Poway City Council Term Limits, Tony Blain, and Poway Unified Marian Kim-Phelps's termination and demand for her job back. Plus, John shares what he's watching on streaming media. It's Wednesday, June 5, 2024. This is what John Riley thinks. Poway Term Limits What are your thoughts on term limits? We have them for President, and in many state and local political races. But not here in Poway. Now Tony Blain is circulating a petition to get term limits on the November 2024 ballot. Is this the right approach? Or can “term limits” simply happen by voting against the incumbent? Terminated Poway Unified Superintendent, Marian Kim-Phelps, Wants her Job Back Imagine getting fired from your job as the top school official in the 3rd largest school district in San Diego County because you got into a bullying war with the local mean girls? What if you could re-imagine schooling to be student-centered? Build from the ground up? That's what Connect Academy did when it was given carte blanche to re-imagine schooling for students in the Poway District. It re-imagined: How we organize learning experiences, by making them interdisciplinary, and community focused. How we organize learners, by making classes mixed grade level, and inclusive of all abilities. How we organize the school day, by creating extended blocks of time, and project-based opportunities. How we CONNECT students, by connecting them meaningfully in daily advisories, and homerooms. Connect Academy isn't some fancy prep school built for elite families that live in the Hollywood Hills; it's a public, inclusive school built for kids of all backgrounds, nationalities, and socio-economic status. Learn more about their journey from learning experience designers/teachers Joe Gizzo and Karen Rogers, and you can build in these student-centered elements in your classroom or school. The U.S. Supreme Court said Monday it will take up a case from Poway Unified School District that tackles a contentious area of social media — when, and if, public officials can block people from their Facebook, Twitter or other social media accounts. The case concerns a former Poway school district trustee, T.J. Zane, and a current member, Michelle O'Connor-Ratcliff, and their Facebook and Twitter pages. At issue: whether public officials with social media pages where they discuss public business can block individuals, or if doing so violates the First Amendment. Union-Tribune criminal justice and legal affairs reporter Greg Moran, enterprise editor Kristina Davis, editorial and opinion director Matthew T. Hall, managing editor Lora Cicalo and publisher and editor Jeff Light discuss the case.
Poway Unified is in the news…. Again! Now a free speech case is coming before the Supreme Court. Meanwhile, politicians are trying to protect renters and protect the homeless, but their policies end up making the housing crisis even worse. It's Wednesday, April 26, 2023. Here's what John Riley thinks: Poway Unified School District first amendment case before Supreme Court Poway School Board members Michelle O'Connor-Ratcliff and TJ Zane (no longer in office), blocked their constituents from speech on their social media pages. Christopher and Kimberly Garnier have been long time critics of the school districts policies and demanded that the school board hold corrupt superintendent John Collins accountable. Should public officials be able to thwart free speech on their social media accounts, even when they discuss policy issues? Coronado and Oceanside School Districts sue Facebook, Google, TikTok and Twitter Of course, social media is impacting children. It has an addictive quality and sadly some kids engage in cyber bullying. Is this the time to sue technology companies? Or is this a teaching opportunity on how to best integrate social media in your life? Focus on reason, rationality, and not living second handed. San Diego Renter Protections If a property owner fulfills the terms of the lease agreement, but then decides to have the tenant vacate the property, does that make them a bad person? San Diego officials want to force landlords to pay 2-3 months of rent if they evict a tenant for no-fault. Sometimes landlords want to upgrade the property, move back in, sell the property, or just move on from troublesome tenants. Landlords have property rights, right? Renters upset about Ratio Billing for Utilities. Pay your fair share! In older apartment buildings, there are no specific electric, gas, and water meters for each unit. So, property owners use a formula to share those costs amongst the tenants. Now tenants are upset that they are paying more than they should. Isn't this how socialism and collectivism always seem to work? Some pay more than their fair share. Others freeload off others. SDG&E Rates Based on Income are Nonsense In a recent letter to the editor, a Poway resident expressed his frustration with SDG&E's proposal to base electric rates on income. Is this another income redistribution scheme? San Diego Mayor Todd Gloria has had it with homelessness. Public officials are facing a moral dilemma. Do they push out the homeless from encampments since they are there illegally and don't have property rights? Or is doing so inhumane? Seems like Todd Gloria is ready to get more aggressive to push the homeless out. Should the government buy housing for the homeless? The San Diego Housing Commission is planning to buy 3 Extended Stay America motels at the price of $383,000 per unit to house the homeless. Promising idea? San Diego Electric Vehicles Surging Over 10,000 EVs were sold in San Diego County in the first quarter of 2023. California now has over 1.5 zero emission vehicles. It's clear what direction this is headed. Get on board or get left out. LA Times Opinion Article: Give up on EV? An LA Times editorialist is fed up with the challenges of charging their EV on road trips. But is it really that hard? If you have a home charging station, that should satisfy 90% of your needs. Frida Brunzell is a candidate for Poway Unified School District Board Trustee in Area B. This covers Northeast Rancho Bernardo and North Poway. Only 75% of PUSD Students Read at Grade Level Frida shared with me her frustrations with PUSD's reading curriculum. 25% of PUSD students are not reading at their grade level. According to Frida Brunzell, PUSD is still teaching reading using a flawed method invented in the 1960s. There are innovative and proven alternative methods to teach reading, but establishment interests, book publishers, and fear of change prevent school leaders from making the necessary corrections. We discussed dyslexia and how this is afflicting students here in our school district. When dyslexic students fail to learn to read, their likelihood of struggling in life or ending up in prison increases dramatically. Bullying is a Serious School Safety Issue Frida Brunzell also spoke at length about the problems of bullying on school campuses. Students are now recording the incidents and sharing them on social media. This further terrorizes the victim as they re-experience the trauma and continue to get ridiculed. Sadly, school officials are not taking strong action to combat bullying. Frida Brunzell is fluent in 4 Languages, has a master's degree in Chemical Engineering We also discussed Frida's backstory growing up in Sweden, attending college in Germany, and living in England and France as a young adult. Frida is fluent in 4 languages and has a master's degree in Chemical Engineering. Frida has also been very active as a PTA leader at both the school level and the district level. Students of Color at Poway Unified Frida also shared her thoughts about racism in Poway schools. As a parent of bi-racial Black students, she shared some of the difficulties her children have experienced. This led to further discussions of the Instagram account Black at PUSD, equity, inclusion, changes in curriculum, and CRT. Frida Brunzell helped start the JEDI group that stands for Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion. We also discussed PUSD's COVID policy, failing school infrastructure, the potential of a future school bond, PUSD's budget, and arts and music education. Frida wants to be a school board member that asks tough questions and is a voice for constituents in her community. Thanks to the livestream audience for so many great questions and comments. The US Marine Corps Patrick shared his background growing up with a single parent facing tremendous financial challenges. He discussed his time at San Diego State University and his career as a US Marine in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Syria. Educational Curriculum We discussed his “Brilliant at the Basics” curriculum proposal focusing on reading, writing, and arithmetic. This led to further discussion of vocational education, critical race theory, and home economics courses. We also covered options available to students at PUSD to attend Design 39, JROTC at Westview High School, Spanish and Mandarin bi-lingual immersion programs in elementary schools, and 4H specialty classes at Poway High School. PUSD Finances and School Bonds Patrick Batten spoke about Poway Unified School District's financial condition, the broken air conditioning at Rancho Bernardo High School and Bernardo Heights Middle School, the failed Measure P bond, and the infamous Billion Dollar Bond. We also spoke about teachers/administrator union endorsements and how those relations impact financial budgeting for the district. COVID and Education We spent a good amount of time covering the way Poway Unified managed the COVID crisis including district communication challenges, masks, remote education, and how other schools successfully got students back in school sooner than PUSD. There was so much more covered in this podcast interview including the role of parents in education, the school board listening to constituents, Poway Federation of Teachers, Poway School Employee's Association, Contractor's Union, school safety, school board dynamics, school infrastructure, technology in education, book banning, STEM, and mental health services for students. Adolescents and teenagers require 8 to 10 hours of sleep each night to support brain development, an amount of time that is challenging for them to achieve when the school day begins early in the morning. Now, California has become the first state in the country to require schools to start later. Middle schools must start no earlier than 8am and high schools no earlier than 8:30 AM. For our back to school series, "School Principles," we explore the issue of sleep deprivation for students, how it affects school performance, and the impact on later start times on schools and families. To understand the value of this legislation, we spoke with Lisa L. Lewis, author of “The Sleep Deprived Teen: Why Our Teenagers are So Tired, And How Parents and Schools Can Help Them Thrive.” We also spoke with Dr. Marian Kim-Phelps, Superintendent of Poway Unified School District about the challenges of implementing these mandated changes.

A good superintendent should have a deep understanding of the district's needs and be able to build relationships with parents, teachers, students and other stakeholders. They should also be able to lead design thinking in order to develop innovative solutions for problems in the education system. Some duties of the superintendent include directing planning and scheduling, budgeting, student assessment and determining appropriate resources for schools. Josh Van Norman took over as Superintendent of the San Antonio Union School District on July 2nd, 2019. He is looking forward to starting his new job in the picturesque Monterey County, California. Education is a super important topic and not necessarily one that isn't discussed, it's just always discussed within a certain space and amongst people who reap all the benefits of being educated. So...we're here to talk about the things that those people didn't experience. From the perspective of BIPOC who felt out of place, had students verbally attack them, and had teachers who were never invested in them.On this episode we were able to talk with Nene and Ekene, the students behind Black in PUSD, an account which shares first hand accounts of racism in a school district in San Diego. TW // during our interview with Black in PUSD Nene and Ekene discuss stories of being threatened by white students which may be triggering to Black folx.Check out Nene and Ekene's page on IG @BlackinPUSD for stories of how racism has affected BIPOC in the Poway Unified School District. Today is Electoral College Day which normally is a footnote in the news, but today is a major story. We discuss some of the election chaos and fake news, but also question the necessity of the Electoral College in the 21st Century. Then we shift gears and discuss local issues with Poway Unified School District’s need to borrow money. While discussing Poway Unified, we also pay tribute to outgoing board member Kimberley Beatty and the good work she has done in our community. Finally, we discuss the Cleveland Indians decision to drop their mascot name and the impact this will have on other sports teams to change their names as well. We discuss so many people and places including Festivus, Pledge of Allegiance, Donald Trump, Joe Biden, George HW Bush, George W Bush, Bill Clinton, Ross Perot, Al Gore, Hillary Clinton, John Kerry, Michelle O’Connor-Ratcliff, USA Today, Washington Redskins, Cincinnati Reds, Stanford Cardinal, Alcatraz, Houston Oilers, Tennessee Titans, Atlanta Braves, Kansas City Chiefs, Golden State Warriors, Chicago Blackhawks, San Diego State Aztecs, San Diego Padres, Las Vegas Raiders. Closing Quote: "All-or-nothing systems disenfranchise millions of voters and prompt campaigns to focus solely on closely contested states. This year, the candidates are ignoring two-thirds of the states because all of the electoral votes in each appear safely in one or the other's camp. So certain an outcome discourages turnout in those states as well. Though the system dates back to the 19th century under laws adopted by each state, it doesn't have to be that way. Certainly, the U.S. Constitution doesn't require it." USA Today USA Today. (19 Sept 2004). Editorial/Opinion. San Diego Supervisor District 2 candidates Steve Vaus and Joel Anderson offer their stances on the issues as they vie to represent the East County. Plus, two teenage sisters are shedding light on what it means to be Black in the Poway Unified School District and they’re making a big impact. Also, for decades clinical trials have mostly recruited white men. A federal 10-year study called “All of Us” is trying to change that but some researchers believe the program may not actually benefit everyone. In addition, Phillip Halpern, a retiring federal prosecutor, has some choice words for Attorney General William Barr. And, the 1988 fires that scorched Yellowstone National Park captivated the nation and marked a new chapter of massive wildfires in the West. Finally, California theme parks could lose billions of dollars as the state’s coronavirus restrictions threaten to keep parks closed for the holiday season.
Phil and I cried and cried on the episode. Yay for catharsis! You may have noticed that I broke with tradition for the naming convention of this episode. After talking to Nettie while editing Factor, the only title that resonated with me was this line from Mumford and Sons. Instead of changing his first person write up of himself, I decided to c&p so you can hear his love and pride and hopefully it helps you decide to vote for him if you are in his county. "I, Phil Factor, came to Poway California in 1976 to teach, counsel, coach, and advise in the Poway Unified School District. I made up my mind that Poway was where I wanted raise my family, work, and provide community service. For 38 years I helped Poway become one best school districts in the United States. I taught with high powered enthusiasm and passion to empower my students to become champions for life. I always claimed that students were our most important resources we have on earth. Each student has a gift; that of intelligence, personality, and abilities. I was able to motivate students to do their best, inside and outside of the classroom. I loved facilitating discussions and activities. Being a life long learner I learned from my students. I retired in 2014. My Family: In 1969, I was 16 years old, a junior at Granada Hills High School when I met Laurel. We went to school together. That was our first time we discussed politics. We married in 1974 and just celebrated our 46 wedding anniversary. We have two adult sons Josh and Lucas. Six grand children and a great grandson. One of greatest impacting challenges our family faced, was when Laurel went back to school, University of Southern California, to become a Physician Assistant. My parenting responsibility suddenly changed, and I lived the life as a single father with children. Although we made many sacrifices at time, it payed off. My sons and I bonded into a life time relationship of love and friendship. Josh has been happily married for 16 years with two kids, Kaycee and Cody. They are now grandparents. They all live in Missouri, where he teaches and coaches wrestling. Lucas is a fireman/inspector. He got married 4 years ago and became a parent to three children, Ivan 16, and twin girls Lizzie and Robin are 11years old. Lucas and his family live with us on Iron Mountain. Laurel and I are getting the full grandparenting experience and loving it.Too many service and other awards to mention! I am a HUMANIST. Today we hopscotched across a range of issues including an election preview here in Poway, plus thoughts on masks, the economy and the Padres 2020 start. Many of our listeners and viewers enjoy that I cover local issues, so I also offered comments on the potential sale of the Poway Center for the Performing Arts, the Poway protesters, Rabbi Goldstein and some shoutouts to some Poway personalities. Governor Newsom is jacking up the economy by moving his dimmer switch up and down. How are entrepreneurs supposed to manage their business? How are you managing you? We discuss the recent wave of shutdowns of large portions of our economy, violation of individual rights and better ways to handle the pandemic. We then discuss the pending economic implosion that is in our future when the stimulus payments end. Reverend Doctors Stephen and Abigail Albert joined us to discuss Interfaith Awareness Week here in San Diego County August 11 thru the 18th. During our conversation we shared stories and experiences of people of different faiths coming together and learning from one another. We talk about Steve’s Interfaith Manual where he documents 40 different topics, such as violence and love, and then breaks down the perspective of 12 different faiths on each topic. His discovery, which served as his dissertation project, is that people of all faiths share so many core values and common experiences. Abigail shared stories about her efforts to bring Interfaith into the education community. She shared a special story about a Poway High School student and his efforts to help better educate students of all faiths. Abigail also discussed some of her efforts to try to introduce Interfaith into Poway Unified School District’s events and/or curriculum. During our discussion we talk extensively about educating people on the other religions in their community. It is this effort of education, and in particular breaking down the hate and fear, that helps build stronger communities and greater tolerance. We shared stories about their efforts creating field trips where people of different faiths can learn about other faiths, learn about their customs and be welcomed as a guest in their places of worship. We touched on a variety current events, in particular the Poway Chabad shooting, and how this idea of breaking down fear can help our society and work towards preventing hate crimes. We also discussed their efforts in helping Poway heal after the shooting including their coordination of community vigils. We also discuss many other people and topics including Poway Mayor Steve Vaus, World Interfaith Network, India, Scotland, Ethiopia, UC San Diego, Freedom of Religion, Golden Rule, Platinum Rule, Poway City Council, Poway Sheriff, Rick Love, bullying, religion in schools, racism, Imam Ahmed, Usama Shami. #JohnRileyProject #Liberty #Interfaith #BreakingDownTheFear JRP0067 Poway Interfaith Info: Poway Interfaith Team: http://powayinterfaithteam.com/ point@powayinterfaithteam.com World Interfaith Network: https://world-interfaith.com/ Interfaith Awareness Week (KUSI Interview): https://www.kusi.com/interfaith-awareness-week-happening-in-san-diego-county-from-august-11-to-august-18th/ Interfaith Awareness Week – Event Schedule: https://sandiegointerfaith.org/events-2/ John Riley Project Info: Bookings? The Trump response in the aftermath of the El Paso and Dayton shootings was about condolences, condemnation of hate and offering proposals to prevent these incidents from occurring again. But does the Trump response and his recommended policies actually make a difference? Do Trump's recommendations violate our civil liberties? How does his condemnation of hate match up with his rhetoric at campaign rallies? We speak about the San Diego Padres rough second half and the future of Andy Green. We also congratulate Darren Smith, Marty Caswell and Jordan Carruth on their new sports talk gig at XTRA 1360. Then we take an early look at the San Diego County Supervisors District 2 race and Poway’s Mayor Steve Vaus. We discuss the money flowing into the Vaus campaign and more broadly in all of the supervisor races. We also make note of Rancho Bernardo resident Carl DeMaio entering the congressional race to face off with Duncan Hunter Jr and a variety of other candidates. In this episode we cover The Declaration of Independence, Justin Amash's own declaration of independence from the Republican Party and News & Notes in DC and here in Poway. We start off with Congressman Justin Amash (I-MI) and his statement of leaving the GOP. Or, did the GOP actually leave Amash? We get into Amash's record as a bold, principled and transparent congressman and a staunch defender of the Constitution and individual rights. We explore Amash's criticism of the GOP and the Rep/Dem duopoly. We discuss Amash's brand as a fiscally conservative, free market, small government, Bill of Rights, non-interventionist, economic freedom, individual liberty representative and how the GOP has largely abandoned those values. Then we take a close look of the Declaration of Independence and it's moral and historical significance. We pay close attention to the Preamble of the Declaration of Independence, particularly our inalienable or unalienable rights of Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness and why this serves as a higher purpose for this podcast. I share my thoughts on the NBA Draft and talk about my new streaming interest Deadwood. Then we get into the idea of entrepreneurism as an option for young people. It doesn’t always need to be about finding a job you hate for a low wage. It can instead be about doing work you enjoy, building important career skills, making more money than you thought was possible and having control over your schedule. Creating a community can be extremely overwhelming, but there are very specific and strategic ways of thinking and planning that can help us break it down into manageable chunks. What can we do to help people feel like they belong? How can we be more inclusive? How do roles and rules help people feel more comfortable? In this episode, Marie Morris explains how she developed a community in her classroom, and how social media can be a web of support for educators. 3 Things We Learned From This Episode Communities of support on social media (07:40-08:46) We can use social media to situate ourselves in a space that is collaborative and non-threatening, whether it’s in the business world or in the education world. Instagram and YouTube are spaces where teachers can share and support each other and they can help build our confidence as educators. What we need to put in place to create a community (26:09-28:41) We can begin to create a community when we think about how our physical space functions and what interactions can happen within it. We also need to go beyond the layout by putting clear expectations in place of what is required of every person in every role in the community. How rules help people feel comfortable (28:40-28:53) We need to make ground rules when bringing big groups of people together because when there is uncertainty, people get anxious and afraid of doing the wrong thing. Rules help a community of people know what’s expected, which makes them feel more comfortable. As teachers, we can facilitate a holistic shared experience for our students by creating a community. When we create communities for our students, we foster better learning, excitement and retention. Having rules helps them feel comfortable and aware of boundaries. When we build a community, we must think about the physical space as well as the interactions between people. We just need to break it down into specific and manageable steps that work for our context. Guest Bio- Marie Morris is a teacher in the Poway Unified School District, in San Diego, CA, and has been teaching for 12 years. She has taught all four grades of English (9-12), as well as both the performance and technical side of theatre. Marie has a blog, YouTube channel, and Instagram profile focused on classroom teaching. Being part of an online community has changed her perspective on how she runs her classroom as well as her confidence as a professional educator. Her teaching style is energetic and fast-paced, but she constantly checks for student understanding. She likes to engage students with references they can connect with and give students a sense of belonging to her classroom community. Marie earned her BA in French, a Single Subject English teaching credential, and an MA in Theatre Arts all from San Diego State University. Teaching is in Marie’s blood. She has been unsure of many things over the course of her life, but of two things she has always been certain - she wanted to be a mom and she wanted to be a teacher. marie@thecaffeinatedclassroom.com https://www.thecaffeinatedclassroom.com/ https://www.instagram.com/thecaffeinatedclass/ https://www.youtube.com/c/TheCaffeinatedClassroom?sub_confirmation=1
Rory Herrman joined us to talk about his hockey story coming up through the ranks in youth hockey, competing in the highest-level amateur hockey league in the United States and preparing for NCAA Division 1 Hockey. Rory Herrman got the bug to play hockey from experiencing the amazing energy and excitement attending San Diego Gulls games with this family at the San Diego Sports Arena. We trace his story from roller hockey at the Poway Sportsplex and Kit Carson Park in Escondido all the way to playing for the USA U17 National Team and the Green Bay Gamblers and Fargo Force in the USHL. Tracing Rory’s life through his ascendency in the hockey ranks was incredible. The support and love from his parents made everything possible. The flexibility and academic support from his principle and teachers at Poway High School let him pursue his dream while staying on track achieving great grades and remaining on course for college. From 8th grade to senior year in high school it was a different school with different classmates and different experiences. Rory's stories about the competitiveness on the ice, the hockey fights and the personal impact of being trade were riveting. I had a great conversation with Caleb Allen talking baseball and how the sport translates into great life lessons. Caleb Allen is the Varsity Baseball Hitting Coach at Westview High School in the Poway Unified School District. Caleb has served in various coaching roles at Poway High School, El Camino High School and San Diego Christian College. He also ran the San Diego Crush travel baseball program helping build a solid organization with a tremendous coaching staff. Caleb Allen is a protégé of local hitting guru Deron Johnson who has coached a long list of MLB players, minor leaguers and collegiate hitters. Johnson's approach is as much about mechanics as it is about the mental side of the game. Deron Johnson taught Caleb that the mechanical side can be built through the mental side. It's about coaching hitters on achieving certain feelings which ultimately gets the hitters executing the right mechanics. We explore how lessons taught in baseball are valuable in all parts of life. With hitting it is about having a plan, attacking and never giving in to the pitcher. Caleb highlighted the quote “never give up bat speed for making contact” which is another way of saying not to be tentative but instead give it everything you've got. Caleb Allen shared the story of Dylan Mulholland who tried out for his high school team multiple times and always got cut. But the kid loved baseball and he ended up making the team as a senior year. About 8 years later Caleb learned that Dylan was playing baseball professionally in Canada, working at a batting cage facility, planned a baseball game for his bachelor party and continues to live the baseball dream. We share more stories involving major leaguers Cole Hamels, Kevin Newman, Austin Wynns, Chris Bando and Sal Bando. We get into the crazy stories of out-of-control parents in club baseball and Caleb's challenges managing both players and parents. We get into Mike Matheny's Manifesto about the role parents should play in supporting their child in competitive sports. Caleb shares his own recruiting story and offers numerous tips for players and parents as they go through their own recruiting process. Westview opens up their 2019 season on Saturday February 16th against Grossmont High School. Caleb Allen Hitting Lessons: www.caleballenbaseball.com John Riley Project Info: Bookings? Inquiries? This morning I was pleased to welcome Poway Unified School Board Area B Candidate Ginger Couvrette. Ginger has an incredible track record of volunteerism in our community helping children, athletes, needy families, special needs students and teachers in the Poway Unified School District. I have always known of Ginger as a community dynamo helping out so many people throughout Poway, but I was amazed to learn that she has done so much more. Ginger often pointed out how the positive at Poway Unified and overall how people are happy. She doesn't want to take sides, but rather surround herself with intelligent people that can work together to solve problems. Ginger is a former science teacher at Poway High and San Marcos High. Ginger Couvrette spoke about the need for district-wide procedures and protocols on issues like student safety, bullying and student anxiety. She wants to have a consistent set of standards with citizen oversight so teachers, parents and administrators have consistent expectations when important situations arise. She also talked at length about the vocational training she experienced in high school and how these innovative programs can be implemented to at PUSD to provide better educational and career-testing opportunities. Ginger Couvrette shared her story of helping save the Poway Days Parade and enjoying working closely with Sue Herndon and Heather Dugdale. They joined forces again and joined Jody Campillo to create Jack-O-Smash to help raise money for special needs students at PUSD. Over 3 years they raised $70,000 which they offered in $500 grants to all PUSD special needs teachers at all schools that requested help. The event involved a 5K race, giant trebuchets that launched pumpkins great distances and a softball game with special needs athletes and current & former Padres and other MLB players. Ginger also discussed her experience on the City of Poway's Budget Review Committee and the best practices she learned that could be brought to Poway Unified. This included a clear prioritization of special projects that could be pursued with one-time money from the state or from surpluses. The City of Poway also has a disciplined process where departments budget and save for capital expenses years in advance. For example, if a department needed to buy a truck that would last 8 years, then they would buy the truck, but immediately begin saving in year 1 and each year thereafter. Then when that truck needed to be replaced the funds were available to buy the next truck by year 8. The end result is a disciplined process that includes citizen oversight of individual department budgets resulting in a long string of balanced budgets and healthy reserves. This is one example of many where Couvrette identifies programs that work in other places that can be rolled out at Poway Unified as a successful program. We also spoke about special needs students and their needs, unnecessary legal battles, the natural human concern about change in light of the new superintendent and her new cabinet, tightening up the business side of the district, streamlining and automating processes to save time and money, Pomerado Elementary's new technical center, school foundations, ROTC, agriculture, the 3-2 board majority dynamics, field trips, cross country, her son building and driving the Cal Poly SLO Rose Bowl Parade float, turf at Valley Elementary and Meadowbrook Middle School, lights at Arbolitos Field and Valley Elementary, Poway Sports Association, Poway soccer, football, Poway High Tennis, Poway High Water Polo, Palomar Pomerado Pathmaker internship, Thanksgiving baskets at Chaparral Elementary and the Poway High Rugby Club. The list of community organizations that Ginger has helped is endless. John Riley Project Info: Bookings? Inquiries? Gaby Dow joined us for a great discussion about PUSD issues from a parent perspective. Gaby is a business consultant that works in the area where the public sector and technology intersect, so she had some great insight into Poway Unified's technology plans. She served on the school district's tech advisory committee and shared some of the frustrations and challenges facing the district and it's IT strategy. Gaby shared in detail how a third party, hired consultant for the district chose not to offer recommendations due to the toxic culture at the school district. This led to the infamous report that John Collins later redacted with edits, thus thwarting transparency and preventing "dirty laundry" to be exposed to the public. We also covered PUSD's data breach which Gaby Dow was the recipient of when she requested a routine set of public records and instead received personal information on tens of thousands of students and their families. We also spent time discussing the districts's financial challenges including the Billion Dollar Bond and the current structural deficit. It was enjoyable to discuss the dynamics of each of the current school board political races and the strengths and weaknesses of various candidates. We had fun pointing out hypocrisies of campaign slogans with actual reality as well as showcasing how the election districts are largely gerrymandered. PUSD Area B: Ginger Couvrette, Kim Garnier, Kevin JuzaPUSD Area C: Terry Norwood, Charles Sellers, TJ ZanePUSD Area D: Michelle O'Connor-Ratcliff, Stan Rodkin There was so much more we could have covered! Gaby is a recent owner of a Tesla Model 3. We need to do a follow up segment about her car, electric vehicle ownership experiences and the entire EV marketplace. Plus Gaby Dow does consulting for various public agencies including cities and water districts. Gaby will definitely be back! We went over an hour and a half just on PUSD. We'll spend more time on more topics very soon. John Riley Project Info: Bookings? Inquiries? An important conversation about school shootings and the recent increase in school threats, crisis communications, and media relations with Christine Paik the Director of Communications for the Poway Unified School District.
The Poway Unified School District is one of the highest regarded school districts in the state. Its schools are good and its students are high-performing. But the district's sterling reputation has a few big dings. Poway Unified's leadership has been under a cloud of suspicion since 2011 when Voice of San Diego broke a story about a strange bond that allowed the district to immediately borrow $150 million, but then required it to pay back $1 billion by 2035. That financial scandal shook the school and resulted in lots of negative attention from the media and the families inside the district. California lawmakers changed laws preventing other districts to do what Poway did, and the San Diego County Grand Jury scrutinized the deal. But former Poway Unified superintendent John Collins downplayed the whole issue and kept his job. But in 2016, he was fired amid another financial scandal. This time, Collins was charged with five felony charges for allegedly misusing public money, vacation, sick and leave time − charges he denies. As that case plays out in the courts, Poway Unified has moved on, naming Marian Kim-Phelps as its new superintendent. She's the district's first women and the first person of color to serve in that role. On the podcast, hosts Scott Lewis and Laura Kohn talk to Kim-Phelps about her leadership style. She said transparency is extremely important to her and that being open moving forward is the only way to leave the past turmoil behind. “I believe that I am a transparent leader,” she said. “People forget, we're public education. Nothing's private. Nothing's a secret.” Kim-Phelps also talks about how she wants to find funding to expand the district's multi-language programs, she discusses the innovation relationship between the Poway teachers' union and the school leadership, the district's innovative Design 39 school, the big change in school board elections and more. Also on the podcast, Lewis talks about how his 5-year-old daughter, who just barely missed the cutoff dates for transitional kindergarten, is already advocating for universal TK for all 4-year-olds. What's Working Dual-language programs in Chula Vista: An education think tank recently released a report report showing how, despite legislation that made bilingual education difficult to implement, the Chula Vista Elementary School District has successfully built 21 Spanish-English dual-language immersion programs that now reach over 4,000 students. Number of the Week 95 percent: A new report shows that 95 percent of Latino youth in California were born in the United States. Latino students continue to face barriers in our country's education system that make it harder for them to succeed. These are American children, and the educational system needs to get better at educating them. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Teacher evaluations are crucial, but also controversial. The Poway Unified School District, though, has a new approach to its teacher evaluations. On this week's podcast, Candy Smiley, president of Poway Federation of Teachers, and Michele Manos, a teacher and leader of the district's teacher evaluation system, joined co-hosts Scott Lewis and Laura Kohn to explain Poway's evaluation programs. One part of the program, for example, pairs teachers with their peers. "We wanted our focus on professional learning for teachers. How do we make teachers get the best opportunities for their students by improving their practice? That's really what our whole program is based on. It's a growth model, it's a strength-based approach, taking a look at multiple measures," Manos said. Lewis and Kohn talked about the latest in teacher evaluations and what could change on the state level as well. Got thoughts, opinions or experiences with this? Call 619-354-1085 and leave your name, neighborhood and story so we can play the voicemail on future episodes. Number of the Week 1 out of 5 and 1 out of 17: A national survey out of Brown University and Vanderbilt University demonstrates how principals rate teachers. Principals said about one fifth of teachers were not proficient and needed assistance and support. But the same principals only gave one out of 17 teachers less than satisfactory proficiency ratings.
