Some big, bittersweet news, amores - after almost 9 (!!!) years producing a weekly podcast, with over 300 episodes under our belts, we're bringing Radio Menea to a close. In this final episode, we talk about that decision, what is next for this project, and Debí Tirar Más Fotos, Bad Bunny parting gift to us. Featuring music by Bad Bunny.
Juan Gabriel was not just a singer and a songwriter - he was legendary. Over the years his songs brought us joy, his fabulous outfits gave us life, and his flamboyant performances served as the launchpad for countless family conversations about sexuality and gendered performance. For queer Latinxs, he was one of our icons. This episode, originally recorded shortly after his death, was Radio Menea's first time dedicating an entire episode to one artist's life, music, and impact. Que en paz descanses, JuanGa - we'll never forget you. Featuring music by Juan Gabriel. This week, un invitado muy especial: Chilean indie darling and Radio Menea fave Alex Anwandter, talking about his new album Dime Precioso. Join us as we talk about his bimbo era, why he's found his power in the superficial, the challenges of the music industry today, and how - as a long time “super gay” artist - he's moving away from the commodification of identity in his latest work. It's 1999. Ricky Martin is about to take the gringo Grammy's stage with a historic performance. The beginning of what became known as the “Latin Explosion,” it ushered in a new Latin Boom moment. Jennifer Lopez, Shakira, and the rise of commercial reggaeton shortly would follow. The moment passes, and then in 2017: Despacito. Is anything different? In part two of our Latin Boom series, we detail the rise of Latin artists to the American mainstream from the new millennium to the current moment. Every so often, Latin rhythms - read, Afro-Latino rhythms - make it to the U.S. mainstream. And yet, with few exceptions, these “Latin booms” present something very particular: a whitewashed yet racialized exotic designed for white consumption. In our two-part series on Latin Booms, we explore the booms and the busts, the times in between, and whether we see a different future ahead for Latin music. This week, the 1950s mambo craze and the weird era - between the mambo craze's death post-Cuban revolution and the 90s Latin explosion - that brought us from Santana to the Miami Sound Machine. In the fall of 2018, Justin Favela was in New York City doing an installation at the Sugar Hill Children's Museum of Art and Storytelling. During breaks he would take the opportunity to chat with friends and fellow artists in this little makeshift recording studio that he set up at the museum. One day his friend Verónica Bayetti Flores stopped by and they had this fun conversation you are about to hear. Vero is a writer, podcaster, policy wonk, activist, consultant and cultural critic. Listen in as they get into her life and geek out about music, food and art. You can follow Verónica Bayetti Flores @VeroConPlatons on Instagram and Twitter. On today’s very special episode of Songmess we are bringing you a podcast crossover nearly three years in the making as the brilliant minds of Radio Menea finally join us on the show! Veronica Bayetti Flores and Miriam Zoila Pérez met years ago while working in reproductive justice, a path of friendship and activism they are still walking today. The long time friends have always shared a bond over music, starting Radio Menea with the goal of someday being invited to the Latin Grammys. Though that dream has not yet manifested, the podcast has made a splash in the #supportbrownpodcasts family and beyond, regularly unpacking politics, sexuality, social criticism and the ways music tethers Latinxs back to our homelands. For today’s episode we decided to take a stroll down memory lane, highlighting some of the songs that marked Vero and Pérez at different times in their lives, and we promise the playlist is anything but expected. Featured Artists: Bad Bunny + Drake, Gloria Estefan, Son by Four, Shakira, Rage Against The Machine, Angel y Khriz, Oscar D’Leon, Mula + Xiomara Fortuna, Prince Royce and Nicky Jam. On Episode 22 of the new season on ReVolver, the crew talks about spending Memorial Day in Rachel’s yard and she tells us why her husband should be anointed the Memorial Day “Grillmaster”. Jaime recaps how competitive game night at the BBQ became (money was involved), and Mike bad mouths his Taboo team (which ironically is a very taboo thing to do). Rachel and Jaime also break down their last rehearsal for this Saturday’s Room 28 Sketch comedy show in NYC (tickets still available—see link below). On “Bochinche Bites”, Jaime starts off by calling out some people who weren’t happy with his NY Mets trivia loss on episode 21. He also gives his thoughts on Roseanne getting cancelled, the thirty year-old man getting sued by his parents because he won’t move out, and Porn Hub’s Top Search terms of the year. This week in “Frankspiracy News”, Frank educates us about the rise of “smart cities” which depending on where you live, might make you feel a little stupid. The crew interviews Vero and Perez of the podcast, Radio Menea. They share what inspired them to create “the woke Latinx music podcast you should be listening to”, how they manage to record living in two different states, and how Latinx podcasts have changed since they first started doing the show. The crew also does a “Que Lo Que Quickie” interview with actress Chelsea Rendon of the new Starz original series “Vida”. She covers how it is working on a show with an all Latinx writer’s room, her start as a child actor on shows like “ER”, and Rachel invites Chelsea to crash at her place next time she's in New York City. Hello hello helloooo (que show que show que show)! We're changing things un poquito today in honor of our podcast amigos Latinos Who Lunch, whose Radio Lonchea homages to our format inspired us to return the favor. This one's definitely a different one for us! We're ditching the música (just for this week!) to have a long-form convo about our podcast, the rationale choices that we've made behind the scenes, sexism and misogyny in podcasting, name and gender anxiety, and a little bit about our lives outside of Radio Menea. Go follow Latinos Who Lunch, #SupportLatinxPodcasts, y hasta la próxima (w lots of música, no se preocupen)! Show notes: https://www.radiomenea.com/blog/2018/02/09/episode-46-latinas-who-brunch
If you have been waiting to hear a los chavos de Latinos Who Lunch get all vulnerable, pues ahi les va! They discuss the myth of love, the lack of dating apps for women, Tinder, the struggles of an increasingly hectic schedule and the different ways we can find balance in our busy lives. The process of healing can be a lifelong process and it's good to have friends like Pérez to help you along the way! #DoctoraCorazón #supportbrownpodcasts #supportlatinxpodcasts #lwlpod

It was THE most anticipated political event of the election season: the first presidential debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. For this special early week release show, we ask: what were the debate’s best moments? What were the worst? Did facts even matter? And after so much talk about building a wall, where was a conversation on immigration? Host Maria Hinojosa leads a discussion with Fusion’s Political Correspondent Terrell Starr, Radio Menea co-host Verónica Bayetti Flores and the Futuro Media Group’s Political Editor Julio Ricardo Varela. This week we’re bringing you an extra special treat: our first ever Radio Menea guest! Maria Elena Pérez joins us to talk about songs we love that deal with class-related themes. Songs about money struggles, about why materialism is overrated, songs about love across class divides, and more. But we’re also bringing this theme because we want to talk about the activist movement that brought us together–reproductive justice. Featuring music by La Santa Cecilia, Aventura, Ricardo Arjona, Amandititita, Kat Dahlia and Selena. Show notes: https://www.radiomenea.com/blog/2016/09/23/episode-13-class
When we heard the news, we were speechless. This is a Radio Menea first: we're dedicating today's entire episode to one artist's life, music, and impact. Que en paz descanses, JuanGa - we'll never forget you. Show notes: https://www.radiomenea.com/blog/2016/09/09/episode-12-juanga
This election renews the question of what it means to be an American. How should we define fundamental American values in light of the Orlando murders, the debate over gun rights, and politicians stoking our worst fears? Many were Latinos, Latinas, and members of the LGBTQ community. But in the initial days after the Orlando terror attack, more attention was given to the potential tie to ISIS than to the victims' intersectional identities. Maria Hinojosa leads a discussion with Verónica Bayetti Flores, freelance writer and co-host of Radio Menea, Shadi Hamid, Senior Fellow at the Brookings Institution, and Julio Ricardo Varela, Political Editor with the Futuro Media Group.
