"The way that people talk about immigrants in the news media affects those internalized stereotypes and, also, real fears that construct or limit somebody's mobility." In this episode, Dr. Mario Alberto Viveros Espinoza-Kulick and Dr. Alex Espinoza-Kulick explore how the news media impacts the content and context of health access and decision-making among Latinx immigrant and Indigenous communities. They remind us that we need more immigration policies that center the health, well being, and dignity of migrant communities. Their research emphasizes the interconnectedness of immigration policy and public health, urging policymakers to evaluate immigration laws based on their impact on the health of communities, especially immigrant and Indigenous peoples. This episode references the article titled "Immigration Policy is Health Policy: News Media Effects on Health Disparities for Latinx Immigrant and Indigenous Groups" by Mario Alberto V. Chicagoland area is home to more Palestinians than anywhere else in the U.S., with over 18,000 living in Cook County alone. The Palestinian community has led powerful protests that have led to Chicago becoming the largest city in the country to endorse a ceasefire resolution. It is in the midst of this atmosphere that we gathered for an urgent exchange with Rashid Khalidi, the preeminent historian of the Palestinian national struggle, and the Edward Said Professor of Modern Arab Studies at Columbia University in conversation with activists Ricardo Gamboa of the Hoodoisie and Latinxs for Palestine, and Bill Ayers from Under the Tree. The event served to not only raise awareness but to also raise funds for Palestine Legal. The energy was fierce, the mood determined, the spirit razor-sharp. We left that gathering a little wiser, more resolute, and fixed on turning our anger into action and our dreams of a world at peace into reality.

This week we have yet another amazing guest , our friend, activist, writer and all around power house Julissa Arce Raya. Julissa chats with us about her most recent book “You Sound Like a White Girl: The Case for Rejecting Assimilation”. A book that she hopes can make us feel that no matter where we come from, we are worthy to be whoever we want without having to change our essence just to make others feel comfortable. She describes her book as a celebration of our uniqueness, our traditions, our culture, and our heritage. We talk about her evolution and growth through the past 8 years as is reflected in her books. From the first story she shared to now, feeling like she is finally walking in her purpose. Julissa's desire is for the upcoming generation of Latinxs to see themselves reflected in the culture that surrounds us in this country. This is one of those episodes where we let our vulnerability out and talk very openly about our feelings not only for ourselves but for our children and what identity now means for them. The Sound of Exclusion: NPR and the Latinx Public. Christopher Chávez, Media Studies, University of Oregon As a network that claims to represent the nation, NPR asserts unique claims about what it means to be American. In The Sound of Exclusion, Christopher Chávez critically examines how National Public Radio conceptualizes the Latinx listener, arguing that NPR employs a number of industry practices that secure its position as a white public space while relegating Latinx listeners to the periphery. These practices are tied to a larger cultural logic. Latinx identity is differentiated from national identity, which can be heard through NPR's cultivation of an idealized dialect, situating whiteness at its center. Pushing Latinx listeners to the edges of public radio has crucial implications for Latinx participation in civic discourses, as identifying who to include in the “public” audience necessarily involves a process of exclusion. Chávez analyzes NPR as a historical product that has evolved alongside significant changes in technology, industry practice, and demography. In The Sound of Exclusion, Chávez asks these pressing questions: What kind of news organization was NPR intended to be? What has it become over time? In what ways is it evolving to meet the needs of a nation, in which U.S. Latinxs are becoming an increasingly larger portion of the American public that NPR serves? Informed by more than fifty in-depth interviews conducted with public radio practitioners from all aspects of the business, Chávez addresses how power is enacted in everyday broadcast practices. By interrogating industry practices, we might begin to reimagine NPR as a public good that serves the broad and diverse spectrum of the American public.

The interesting thing about being one of the 10% Latinx therapists in the U.S. is all of the UNLEARNING we had to do.  Luis Cornejo, LMFT and I talk about our “Lessons Learned” as therapists. (5.5% of therapists are fully bilingual BTW according to the APA.) Here's some data about the gap that exists for mental health care for Spanish speaking Americans.   TBH, when before recording the episode, I thought it was going to be a straightforward sort of interview with questions like “what have you learned from your clients?” or “what are the hardest lessons you had to wrestle with as a growing therapist?”.  As the conversation unfolded, I quickly came to understand that our identities as Latinxs will ALWAYS color our experiences as professionals. Our therapist identities and cultural identities are inextricably tied…so much so, we can't even have a philosophical or theoretical conversation without the ideas of marginalization, white supremacy, oppression, and Latinidad being infused into it. It's not a bad thing! Asi es.   Mentioned in the episode: https://psychosocial.media/ https://www.instagram.com/psychosocial_media/

Very few people in the world want to feel uncomfortable or negative feelings. In fact, most of us try our hardest to avoid them. We choose to eat instead of feel, watch Netflix, clean and organize, or drink instead of feeling. It's like we think we signed a contract when we were born that says that we're never supposed to feel bad. But the purpose of life is not to feel happy or positive all of the time. On the contrary, the purpose of life is to feel all of life's emotions, the good and the bad, and find peace in all of it. The more we can deeply feel every emotion life throws our way, the fuller our lives will be. In this episode I'll teach you how to feel all of life's emotions, especially the most uncomfortable ones (i.e. guilt, shame, sadness, insecurity, overwhelm). In this episode you'll learn: The ABCD's of Feeling Hard Feelings How difficult emotions are experienced by our primitive brains How to process all of life's uncomfortable emotions in real time (instead of running away from them).
