The P-47 Thunderbolt is considered one of the most important fighter-bombers used by Allied Forces in World War II. Thunderbolts flew over half a million missions and are renowned by pilots for their durability and reliability. Over one-third of all Thunderbolts were built at the Republic Aviation plant in Evansville. Notably, nearly half of the plant's employees were women. Known as “Raiderettes,” they worked alongside male workers and boasted a variety of jobs including on the assembly lines, in the administrative offices, and even as test pilots. Many of the women were “two-job workers,” balancing 14-hour shifts at Republic with raising children while their partners fought overseas. Our new blog post examines the lived experiences of the Raiderettes and how they navigated being women workers in a “man's” world, pushing against and often breaking the glass ceiling in the process. This episode was written by Kelsey Green, produced by Jill Weiss Simins, and performed by Justin Clark. The Oakland Raiders official draft party for the 2013 NFL draft, held at Buffalo Wild Wings in San Ramon, California on April 25th, 2013. Raider Greg of Raider Nation Podcast and Raider Nation Videocast hosts our video. He chats with some of the Raider Nation superfans, Gorilla Rilla, Shieldhead, Señor Raider, the Oaktown Pirate, and more. Present at the event were current Raiders players Darren McFadden, Jacoby Ford, Marcel Reece, Tony Bergstrom, and Matt Flynn. Jeanette Thompson of Behind the Shield and Raiderettes director was also there....along with several members of the Raiderettes. Greg Papa, the "Voice of the Raiders" was leading a live broadcast on radio station 95.7 "The Game". Greg Papa made the announcement during this party that 95.7 has been chosen to be the Raiders official flagship station for 2013, and will broadcast all of the Raiders games. Everyone at the party had a great time, especially when we were shown on nationwide television as the Raiders first round pick D.J. Hayden was selected. Special thanks to the Oakland Raiders for allowing us to videotape this event. Episode #67 - 10/2/11 Raider Greg along with the Bad Boys of BBQ host the pregame tailgate party prior to the Raiders vs Patriots in Oakland on October 2, 2011. Jeanette Thompson of the Oakland Raiders joins us for some food and did a video segment with Raider Greg and Kingsford Kirk. Jeanette hosts episodes of "Behind the Shield Online" for the Raiders on Raiders.com. She is a former Raiderette, and this year she became the director of the Raiderettes! She is a busy woman, and Raider Greg shows her our appreciation for all of her great work for the Raiders. Greg also chats with a Patriots fan who was at our party. Erin is obviously a devoted Patriots fan. One of our tailgate regulars, Juan Jorge, tried to stump her by asking her to name the Patriots offensive line from tackle to tackle. She proceeded to rattle off the names without hesitation as you'll see on the video. Then Greg finishes off by visiting with two listeners of our year-round audio podcast, "Raider Nation Podcast", Roy and Vanessa from Modesto. Roy asked everyone to vote for Raider Nation Podcast in the "People's Choice Podcast Awards." The ballot hasn't been announced yet. Hopefully our podcast got enough nominations to make the 10 top podcasts in the sports category. If we did, voting will start soon. Listen to our audio podcast (Raider Nation Podcast) year round. Episode #56 - 10/3/10 Raider Milt and buddy Herm have a few choice word for the Houston Texans, on the morning before the game. Something about the Texans having "no history". We make a point of stopping by their tailgate party at least once per season, with our camcorder. It always makes for a lively video. We also ran into Juan Jorge on his way into the stadium. After chatting with Juan for a minutes, Greg runs into Anthony....who Greg knows from the Safeway grocery store where he shops with his fire crew when he's on duty as a firefighter. Anthony tells us what happens when Raider Greg meets any fellow Raiders fan while he's shopping. Greg gets to speak with two very lovely ex-Raiderettes. They share with us what it was like to cheer for the Raiders, and what it's like returning to the Coliseum as past Raiderettes. Finally we end this episode with an unusual vehicle we came across during the tailgating festivities. A hearse, modified Raider Style, with complete sound system and of course playing the song "Back In Black". We had a blast tailgating, and even got a video interview with Raiders legend Pete Banaszak. This game went back and forth. The Chiefs fans thought they had a victory when they took the lead with less than a minute left, but Jamarcus Russell, despite crazy crowd noise, took the Raiders down the field, and McFadden retook the lead with just seconds left on the clock - and Chiefs fans were left walking out of the stadium in disbelief - and we walked out with large smiles on our faces!
