Audio Recording - Short Story: Snag

Sweetman Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 13, 2026 16:13

Snag is a nasty wee story that includes violence and discussion of sexual assault. It's flippant, provocative, and probably downright brutal. But that's up to each individual to decide. So if you think you're better off skipping this story — then you should. I've supplied a text for it below, and the audio recording is up above. You can read it, or read along with the the recording, or just listen. You can, as I said above, just skip it all entirely. Your choice. Despite the fact that the Best Man said one word far too many times in his speech, it had been a good wedding. ‘Notwithstanding.' You were glad to have been there. However, it really did bug you all the same. This word. It wasn't even quite being used correctly. And Christine in her black dress staring a dagger right at you while you winced through that speech was an obvious sign there was more to come. At the end of the night, drunk, she would not be standing. That was partly her own fault, and maybe you had something to do with it too. She tried some sort of ornery lap dance, some sort of ‘getting even' shtick for some imagined slight. She slid across your knee, the dress like wetted wax paper, and then this grotesque lick of your face, from the bottom of your chin up to the corner of your left eye in a cartoon exaggeration of slow crawl. Well, you just took the two hands you had and pushed her onto the floor where she sat like a bag of spuds. And your wife Olivia, appalled, would later describe the situation as barbaric for all — those watching, those in it, and even those that would go on to hear about it. But your wife also thought Black Dress was almost asking for it, said the whole look of her was like a sausage trying to slip its casing, or was it a sausage unaware it was slipping its casing? At any rate, you said “snarler” and laughed your way into a snort. “You probably didn't need to push her quite so hard, Jimmy,” your wife said, in the taxi, heading home to your rented accommodation. “I mean, it was quite a thud. Did you really have to use both hands?”“Olivia, I'd have used more hands if I could,” you said. Another snort. And with that, as if suddenly triggered, the realisation that Archie would be up in three or four hours, and will want the full degustation: Bluey, PAW Patrol, and Peppa Fucking Pig.Olivia was a saint, they all said it. Behind your back. As well as right to your face. How on earth did she put up with you and all your antics? But you knew that Olivia knew that the real Jimmy wasn't for anyone else. The real Jimmy was just for her. And for Archie now of course too. This other Jimmy smeared peanut butter all down the cupboards while making two thick sandwiches before bed, kicked one shoe out the window of the Airbnb. Woops! And ripped his tie off so quickly that the top button went with it. Also, only one cufflink on final count. You would sway through the new day, wasps in your throat, and a need to constantly scratch at your head. You would watch the cartoons with Archie, and then when he went back down, if he went back down, you would get a second wave of sleep too. You weren't a bad guy. You just could not say no to the open bar. How, you wondered, could anyone say no to the open bar?“Who was that woman in the black dress?” Olivia stood at the top of the stairs. “I mean, she was awful, but she really set you off?”“Just someone from uni.”“Just someone?” “No. Not like that. Literally just someone. Part of the wider gang, obviously, I mean she was there at the wedding. But that's the first time I'd seen her in 20 years I'd guess.” “Well, she had her eye on you all night, and most of the afternoon. Was she there alone? It seemed like it at least. She acted like it at least.” “What does that mean?”“I think you know what it means. Know many other married women that just go and lick the face of a married man in front of his wife?” “Beside you honey, no I don't.”“You're fucking funny Jimmy. And you're fucking lucky, you know that? You're fucking lucky that you're fucking funny, but seriously, I am not sure how we face up later today at the Aftermatch.”“Aftermatch?”“You know, the next day BBQ. The thing. The wedding gloat.”“Ah, the post-mortem?”“Don't call it that! But yes…”“Well, we just won't go. Text and say Archie's sick if you have to, I'll do it. But also what's the problem? Hair of the dog. Might be good…”“The problem, Jimmy, is a bunch of people saw you shove a drunk single woman to the ground, rather violently. The problem, Jimmy, is neither of us checked to see if she was okay, and no one has been in touch with us since, and it is going to be incredibly awkward turning up there as if nothing happened. When, Jimmy, something clearly happened.”You knew what happened. You could never say. There was an electrical current between you and Christine. You had this weird history, admittedly 20 years of radio silence, complete inactivity, seemingly the whole thing had shut itself down, gone away. But you had a history of both getting drunk and ending up in combative, hostile situations. You were dragons for the piss, both of you. And though you never exactly hooked up, there was baggage. You were in each other's lives, at some point, and in the weirdest way. You went to her house one night and watched her sleep, used the spare key because all student flats had one and everyone knew where they were, and you had stumbled home from the pub and sat in a chair in her room while she snored and you watched. Just watched. She would do the same to you, a couple of weeks later, except you woke up with her on top of you. Straddling you, she had grabbed your hands and put them on her boobs, her hands behind your hands prompting you to squeeze. You'd pushed her to the side of the bed, gone straight to the fridge and necked a beer. “Jimmy, you've gone somewhere,” Olivia said. “Where are you? What are you thinking about?” “Nah. Nothing. Just hungover, zoning out love,” you said. “Well, I'm not lying about today. We are showering. We are going. Archie is not sick. And I do want Liz and Graham to meet him. And I do want you on best behaviour.”“When am I not though?” you said. Hoping for a laugh, and in the end supplying it yourself. At the vineyard they were all sitting on long wooden benches, a lot of chambray shirts. Too many cricket hats, bunch of unlikely outfielders you thought. And one or two dads throwing one or two Pétanque balls gently for their kids to marvel over, the clack-clattering of the children collecting these round trophies, disrupting games, burrowing them like a reverse Easter Egg hunt. You breezed past a few of last night's dead soldiers with a dismissive wave, safe under sunglasses, you took a mimosa and asked if there was anything harder on offer. “Not for you,” came the curt reply from the matron of honour. “Ah well,” you said, “best make the ma-most of this one then, eh!” She probably groaned. But fuck it all. Olivia a vision, parading around wee Arch, the star of the day as far as you were concerned. I mean, Graham, Liz, sure. Their day obviously, but also, how long does this shit go on, right? It was their day yesterday. Liz instructed Graham where to sit, and they unwrapped a bunch of junk from the guests, and you flopped about in a beanbag talking to a kid about why Monsieur Donkey was the best character in Peppa Pig, especially when he just hammers Daddy Pig with how shit English food is, saying he brought all of this stuff over from France with him, because he knows the Poms need it, he lists bread and cheese, and even water. The kid looked at you, and shouted “Mummy!” A woman appeared behind bangs and whisked her child away. You slumped further. You must have nodded off for a bit, but talk about rude awakenings, no one around you at all, just a shadow of some legs and sticky wine all on you, Christine standing over, her legs spread widely, her skirt hitched right up. A close talker, lost for words. Just staring. You writhe about and wriggle free of the beanbag's clutches, stand as if at attention. Christine pokes you hard in the chest. “We are going over there,” she says, and points to the tractor shed on the corner of the plot, just behind a couple of huge oak trees. Of course you worry Olivia will see this, of course you realise you haven't talked to anyone else, apart from the Peppa Pig bit with the kid, which was rudely cut short by an uptight mum. In the tractor shed, Christine asks you how you've been. You say, “better.” She says, “I don't doubt that.” You say, “Look, fuck, what even is all this anyway? We were fucking stupid drunk kids. Now we've grown up, let's just…”“You still look like you're stupid and drunk, just not a kid,” she cuts you off. “Jimmy, you look bad mate.”“Don't call me mate.”“Alright then, non-fuck buddy. I mean, what even are we?”“We are two people who used to get messed up and didn't know how to talk to one another sober and then got so drunk we couldn't speak at all. We are two people from another lifetime.”“And yet, here we are.”“Yeah, but I didn't even want to come today.”“I seem to recall that's always been your problem, Jim. That time you basically lured me to your place, and I was there on top of you, and you push me aside for a fucking drink?!”“Look, just leave me alone, I didn't think you had kept up with Liz, I didn't expect to see you, I don't know what to say to you, but um, look, we don't need closure, we don't need anything.”“Oh but the thing is, Jimmy, I saw the way you were looking at me. All fucking night. I know what you were thinking.”“Look Christine, you stupid fucking bitch, you are nothing. You're just this fucking idea of a woman squeezed tight into a dress. You're not what you think you are. I'm not what you think I am. I drink because I like it. You drink because you need to. I have a thirst. You think everyone's thirsty for you. We are two different people. We're not the same. We aren't even the same as we used to be, well, I'm not. You might think I am, but you have no fucking idea. I'm a good guy, I just get, um, a bit muddled.”“Muddled? Muddled! See this fucking bruise right here?” She hitches the skirt once again. “That's your fucking muddling.” “I mean, shit, fuck, I am really sorry about last night actually, but also what the fuck — you licked the side of my face like you owned me. We didn't even speak a word to each other last night. In that sense, it was weirdly like the old days. But fuck you. In front of my wife…”“I want you to fuck me, Jimmy. Right now. Not in front of your wife, but right now, here, in this shed.”“Oh fuck off.” “And if you don't, Jimmy, I will tell everyone here that you forced yourself on me. I'll run from this shed fucking screaming, and crying. In front of the children, in front of your child. In front of your fucking wife.”“Christine. Fuck. You're a psycho.”“Fuck me Jimmy!” And that's when she reached for your belt. And what happened next is of course a blur. But it started with you holding your hands over her mouth, and it ended with her not being able to breathe for a bit. In the middle, she had her teeth on your fingers, and you pushed her hard. Or was it a punch? She was certainly doubled over. So you pushed her into the corner of the shed. Where she flopped down into the loose hay. It was soft there, so you put one of the big tarpaulins over her.Archie was much better at making friends than you were. You sat thinking about that as he played with the other kids, and you heard echoes of questions that eventually felt like you were meant to be answering them. You looked over and saw Olivia talking with Janey, one of the bridesmaids. You stood, waved. Olivia smiled, and you're pretty sure Janey turned the other way. After a while, you decided it was time to go, and not just because you saw Christine tumbling along across the grass on one of her missions. “Well that was a nice day all up,” Olivia said in the car, heading home.“Yeah”, you replied. “It was okay.”“I didn't see much of you though, those mimosas obviously went down better than should legally be the case after your efforts last night.”“What can I say darling, I've got a thirst. You know that.”“I do.”“They were an okay crowd, but fuck, I can't do this sort of shit for too long, eh. I'm looking forward to being back at my desk. Back at work. Maybe a couple of days off the booze even.”“Well that would be something. I mean it would almost be a miracle, Jimmy. But I think you should try.”“I love you and Archie, you know that, eh?”“Of course darling, and we love you. And I think today is proof that you can do it. You can actually not have too much, not be too much. Not offend, or provoke, or get lost in the wrong version of yourself. I'm proud of you honey.”“You are the best thing that ever happened to me.”“But hey, I do have one question.”“Shoot.”“Black Dress?”“Um…”“What's her name, Christine, is that it?”“Yeah, why?”“Oh, Liz said she saw you and, ah, Christine, heading off for a talk, so what was that about?”“Um, nothing. I mean, I knew, ah, we knew each other at university. I told you that. We always had this stupid kinda set of arguments or kinda dares or, I don't know, just stupid stuff, eh.”“Okay?”“Olivia, it's sorted. Okay. I didn't really expect to see Christine. I didn't want to. But she wanted to ask me why I pushed her off my lap. I told her she was drunk and stupid but I also apologised. And look, I think it's sorted completely now.”“Well that is good to hear my love.”“Yeah, I mean I just know it's not going to happen again.”“I'm proud of you Jimmy.”“I'm always proud of you.” “When you pushed her last night Jimmy…”“Yeah…”“Did she fall on anything? My memory is a bit hazy now too, but did she fall on anything?”“Um, the floor?”“Well, that's what I thought, but Janey told me Christine was really limping. She wandered across the field at the end of the afternoon, visibly shaken, crying, holding her head in her hand. You reckon she's a mess, so I am just going to assume that she's upset and still dealing with stuff and we are heading in the right direction. Out of there…”“Ah, yeah, look I don't remember if she hit anything.”“Well, did she have any bruises, or was she limping when you were talking to her Jimmy? I feel like that's a pretty simple question.”“It is. And yeah, I mean she's a fucking fall-down drunk to be honest, so it's likely isn't it. But I can't give you specifics, you see I really don't like looking at her face ever. I mean, that's what got us into this mess to begin with, right?”“Us?”“Me.”“You! Yeah. But you've sorted it now right?”“I have.”“And you apologised.”“I did. I'm certainly very sorry.”Back at the Airbnb, you put the sausages on the BBQ. You always liked to do simple things like a quick dinner. Your way of helping. You wanted to help when able. You'd miss this. All of this. Olivia started packing for the trip home the next day. Archie was still asleep in his car seat, in the rental. They both looked so beautiful. Olivia, always, but especially when in motion. Archie forever, but maybe especially when not in motion. You had the car door open, you had the Bluetooth speaker on the tabletop of the outdoor furniture, playing Yanni's Live At The Acropolis full bore. “What is it with you and Yanni?”“It's my perfect soundtrack! I mean he's new age, right? I'm just a new age guy basically.”“Oh right. And sensitive too I guess?”“I mean, there are certain sensitivities I have. I definitely get close to tears when the liquor cabinet is looking grim.”“Oh god Jimmy, come on…”“Nah, I genuinely do love Yanni though. It's the music. The emotion. The stirring. But also, he's a short Latino guy dressed all in white. You just know that dude is down to fuck.”“Um… I don't know much about Yanni, but I know he's not a Latino. He's from Greece.”“Hey, Latin/Greece, they both invented drama! Anyway, it's all Greek to me!”You take the plate of sausages over to the table, and the one on top has split slightly, it looks like it's about to wriggle from its casing. You and her both have a chuckle. No words. None needed. She smiles at you, so you know what you have to do. You take the sausage, and peel it slowly from itself, as if a banana. You then squeeze as hard as you can, a tight fist around the base of this snarler. Its flesh bursting in a mash all over the plate. You both laugh, despite the visible bite marks on your hand. You both laugh. Just enjoying this last meal together.Sounds Good! is a reader-supported publication. When Indian cricket fans unleash fury on Twitter about disputed LBW calls, host Steve Davis fields the abuse meant for someone else. This episode brings together both Steve Davises for the first time. The retired umpire who stood in 57 Test matches shares what it’s like to make split-second decisions in front of millions, survive a terrorist attack in Lahore, and maintain composure when Shane Warne announces his next delivery to the batter. The SA Drink of the Week features Ballycroft Vineyard and Cellars’ 2024 Small Berry Montepulciano from Langhorne Creek, tasted and endorsed by both Steve Davises. The wine presents an intriguing contradiction, its dark appearance suggesting heavy Barossa Shiraz, yet delivering a lighter, fruit-forward palette that Joe Evans recommends chilling for summer enjoyment. The Musical Pilgrimage features Steve Davis and the Virtualosos with “From the Cathedral to the City End,” weaving together Test cricket, Adelaide Oval, and the 1662 Book of Common Prayer into a meditation on how this game brings us together. Running Sheet: Steve Davis Talks Cricket With Former Umpire Steve Davis 00:00:00 Intro Introduction 00:01:50 SA Drink Of The Week The SA Drink Of The Week this week is a 2024 Ballycroft Montepelciano. Joe Evans of Ballycroft Vineyard and Cellars made an unexpected connection five weeks before this recording. During a Barossa wine tour for friends visiting from England, Steve Davis the umpire introduced himself at the cellar door. Joe mentioned knowing another Steve Davis from Adelaide, someone involved in cricket. The dots joined. Both Steve Davises then converged on this episode, linked by Langhorne Creek grapes and the patron saint of Adelaide. The 2024 Small Berry Montepulciano arrives in the glass looking deceptively heavy. Its dark colour suggests bold Barossa Shiraz, thick and commanding. Yet the first sip tells a different story. Light fruit dances on the palette, a brightness unexpected from that brooding appearance. Joe recommends chilling it slightly and serving through summer, perfect with Italian or Mexican food. Steve the umpire remembers that 10:30am Sunday morning tasting at Ballycroft. When Joe poured this wine, Steve thought immediately of Barossa Shiraz. That’s his drink. But then came the taste, revealing something gentler yet structured. The wine builds as it sits on the palette, gaining weight and presence. Like a pitch heading into day three or four, settling into its rhythm rather than losing life. The conversation meanders through wine, travel and cuisine. West Indies food has never won Steve’s heart, so more of this Montepulciano would help those meals considerably. Host Steve notes how the wine shifts from what seems like a marriage between Pinot Noir and rosé to something with genuine body and staying power. It’s not Pinot weight, not Grenache or Merlot either. The complexity reveals itself slowly, rewarding patience. The 2024 Small Berry Montepulciano from Ballycroft Vineyard and Cellars, endorsed by two Steve Davises, stands as this week’s South Australian drink. 00:10:25 Steve Davis and Steve Davis INTRODUCTION:So, I need to come clean about something. For years on Twitter, I’ve been fielding abuse meant for someone else. Indian cricket fans would see “Steve Davis” and unleash fury about a disputed LBW or a missed edge – and when I’d reply, mortified apologies would flood in. They’d meant the *other* Steve Davis. The one who stood in 57 Test matches, 137 ODIs, survived a terrorist attack in Lahore, and spent 25 years making split-second decisions in front of millions. Today, finally, I get to meet the bloke whose honour I’ve been accidentally defending. Steve Davis, welcome to The Adelaide Show. NOTES: The conversation begins with a revelation. Far from being retired, Steve Davis the umpire spends twelve months a year refereeing cricket across two continents. Every six months he travels to England for County Cricket, returning to Australia for Sheffield Shield and Big Bash matches. When he thought retirement from umpiring might leave him lost, the England and Wales Cricket Board offered him a lifeline that turned into a globe-trotting vocation. His cricket origins trace back to Elizabeth, newly formed with perhaps eight houses when his parents arrived as ten-pound Poms. His father Dave Davis played for WRE Cricket Club alongside John Scarce, whose son Kevin Scarce kept wicket for Steve at Elizabeth High School and later became Governor of South Australia. Cricket in Adelaide was woven through family, friendship and those Saturday afternoons where you’d stand in as a sub fielder, watching your father’s team and falling deeper into the game’s rhythm. The path to international umpiring began humbly in D Grade after finishing his playing career at West Torrens. Within two seasons he’d progressed to A Grade, and by November 1990 he was officiating his first Sheffield Shield match. His debut came partly through circumstance rather than genius. When Tony Crafter retired to become Australia’s first full-time umpire manager, a vacancy opened among South Australia’s two eligible international umpires. Steve joined Darryl Harper in that select group. On 12 December 1992, exactly 33 years ago yesterday, he walked onto Adelaide Oval for his first One Day International. Pakistan versus West Indies. His home ground, but the nerves were overwhelming. Terry Prue, his Western Australian colleague, radioed from square leg to report that Richie Richardson had noticed Steve missing all of Wasim Akram’s no balls. In his nervousness, he’d forgotten to look down at the front foot. When he finally started calling them, Wasim’s response was gentlemanly: “Oh, come on, we’re all friends out here. Give me a bit of warning.”The umpire’s process demands intense concentration. First, watch the front foot land. The moment it’s safe, eyes shoot straight to the bottom of the stumps, letting the ball come into view. As soon as the ball dies, switch off briefly, then begin again. Steve ran his counter one ball ahead, clicking after each delivery so the number five meant two balls remaining. This meant no clicking back for no balls, just not clicking forward. Tim May once stopped mid-delivery and demanded Steve stop clicking his counter during the run-up. His Ashes Test debut at Adelaide Oval in 1997, just his second Test match, stands as one of his finest days. He got every decision right on a 44-degree day when England lost the toss and their bowlers were bowling one-over spells in the heat. Steve Bucknor, his partner that day, also had a flawless match. Alex Stewart still calls him “legend” when they meet at English grounds. The Decision Review System arrived while Steve was umpiring, transforming the role completely. Some umpires, like Mark Benson, couldn’t handle seeing their decisions overturned repeatedly. Benson flew home after two days of a Test match in Australia and never returned to international cricket. Steve embraced DRS immediately. His philosophy was simple: we’re going to end up with the right decision. Better that than five days of a team reminding you about that first-ball error while the batter you gave not out compiles a century. These days, third umpires call all no balls in televised matches. The technology highlights the foot crossing the line, removing that split-second judgment from the on-field umpire. Steve wonders if he’d survive in today’s game, his neural networks so hardwired to glance down then up that retraining might prove impossible. The theatre of the raised finger remains cricket’s most iconic gesture. Steve took his time with it, though not as long as his late friend Rudy Koertzen, dubbed “Slow Death” for the excruciating journey his hand took from behind his back to above his head. Some umpires point at the batter instead of raising the finger, a practice Steve abhors. The law says raise the index finger above your head. The drama lies in that pause, that moment of tension before the finger rises. He carried the essentials: a counter, a wallet-style kit with sprig tightener, pen and pencil, notepad for recording incidents, light meter readings, and lip balm. Some umpires packed their pockets with everything imaginable, but Steve kept it minimal. His process worked. He knew what every ball demanded of him. Shane Warne’s deliveries would fizz through the air with such spin and accuracy that he’d announce his intentions to batters. “This is my wrong one. This one’s going on your leg stump.” It worked brilliantly, planting doubt even as batters wondered if he really meant it. Murali presented different challenges. Steve couldn’t predict where his deliveries would spin until he noticed Sangakkara’s gloves lining up behind the stumps. The great wicketkeeper knew exactly where every Murali ball was heading, providing Steve a crucial visual cue. The conversation turns to safety. Fast bowlers send the ball down at 150 kilometres per hour. When batters connect with the full force of their bats, that ball can come back even faster. Steve got hit more than once. At St Lucia during a West Indies versus Pakistan match, he turned at the wrong moment and the ball struck him square in the backside. Looking up at the big screen, he saw himself mouthing the words that immediately came out, while David Boon and Paul Reiffel, his Australian colleagues that day, doubled over in laughter. The Pakistani batter complained that Steve cost him four runs. Steve’s reply: “Bad luck. You cost me a bruised bum.” The smashing of glass still triggers something in him. Loud noises. Fireworks. His wife Annie says he didn’t get enough counselling after Lahore. She’s probably right. On 3 March 2009, terrorists attacked the Sri Lankan team’s convoy in Lahore. Steve’s van, carrying the umpires, was the only vehicle left in the roundabout after the team’s bus escaped. Every window was shot out. The driver died instantly from a gunshot wound. All five security outriders were killed. Lying on the floor among broken glass, Steve thought: this is not the way I should die. Not here. Not on the way to umpire a Test match. They survived. The terrorists realised the Sri Lankan team had escaped and stopped firing. Steve returned to umpiring but never went back to Pakistan. He did return to other parts of the subcontinent, to other places that required trusting local security. During the drive back to the hotel after the attack, past kids playing cricket on dust bowls, he knew Pakistan wouldn’t see international cricket for years. Those kids who loved the game wouldn’t see their heroes. The political and ideological conflicts would keep cricket away. Asked which game he’d relive for eternity, Steve chooses that second Test match at Adelaide Oval. The Ashes. England versus Australia. His home ground. Forty-four degrees. Every decision correct. Recognition from players like Alex Stewart who still speak warmly of his performance. It represents everything he worked towards: getting it right when it mattered most, on the ground where he grew up watching cricket, in the series that defines the sport. He umpired with characters who became dear friends. Ian Gould, whose father was also named Cyril George, just like Steve’s dad. An impossibly unlikely pairing of names that bonded them immediately. In Calcutta, when Gould was being carted off to hospital with dehydration, he had to fill out a form listing his father’s name while smoking and drinking black tea. Steve looked over his shoulder and saw “Cyril George” written there. On Gould’s final stint umpiring in Birmingham, Steve was the referee. They spent every evening walking the canals with a few pints, the only four-day match where Steve never filed a meal claim. Rudy Koertzen. Steve Bucknor. These were the colleagues who made the profession worthwhile. The spirit of cricket exists, though interpretation varies. Steve recalls Andrew Strauss making a fair point during the Steve Finn incident at Leeds. Finn had a habit of knocking the bails off at the bowler’s end with his knee during his delivery stride. Both batsmen, Graeme Smith and Alvaro Petersen, complained it was distracting. When Finn did it again and Smith edged to Strauss for a catch, Steve had already signalled dead ball. Strauss came over and said quietly: “Why didn’t you tell me you were going to do that?” Steve acknowledged it was a fair point. He probably should have warned the captain. The laws changed after that Test. If stumps are dislodged at the bowler’s end, it’s now a no ball. Cricket people sometimes call it the Steve Finn Steve Davis law change. Cricket’s hierarchy remains clear. Test cricket stands at the pinnacle. Always has, always will. Ask any umpire who the best officials are, and they’ll list those who’ve done the most Tests. Steve’s 57 Tests mean everything to him. The 137 ODIs are nice, but Tests define an umpiring career. The Hundred in England draws families beautifully, but Test cricket is where greatness lives. At the end of play, Steve would call “Time, gentlemen. That’s time.” A simple phrase marking the end of another day’s combat, another day of split-second decisions, theatre, and that noble spirit that still runs through cricket despite everything that tries to corrupt it. 02:00:15 Musical Pilgrimage In the Musical Pilgrimage, we listen to From The Cathedral To The City End by Steve Davis & The Virtualosos. IThe Cathedral looms over Adelaide Oval, watching cricket unfold from the city of churches. Steve Davis and the Virtualosos have woven together Test cricket, the Cathedral End, and the 1662 Book of Common Prayer into “From the Cathedral to the City End.” The song opens with the Prayer of Humble Access rewritten: “We do not presume to come to this thy over trusting in our own righteousness.” Host Steve explains his childhood love for that beautiful English language, attending Church of England services where those words embedded themselves in his memory. The prayer’s cadence and dignity stayed with him. When writing this song, he wanted to capture three elements: Test cricket, Adelaide Oval’s special significance through Bradman and Bodyline, and that cathedral presence overlooking the ground. The question arises: have you ever stood as an umpire and thought a captain made a terrible decision bringing on a particular bowler at the wrong end? Steve the umpire smiles. Sure, sometimes you think it’s surprising, maybe even adventurous under your breath. But someone who knows better than you made that choice, usually the bowler themselves selecting their preferred end. Most decisions are sound, even if they don’t prove successful. You can’t roll your eyes. You can’t show any reaction. Commentators now need special accreditation to enter certain areas. The hierarchy maintains that barrier. Umpires can visit the press box, but commentators can’t come into the umpires’ area without risking trouble. It’s a good separation. Before play they chat on the field, saying hello to the numerous commentators modern broadcasts require. Steve never worried about Tony Greig sticking his key into the pitch. Didn’t seem to do much damage. The song plays, capturing that ritual: hours before proceedings commence, sandwiches thoughtfully made, pushing close to the fence, ladies and gentlemen on the village green putting down their glasses. Two thousand balls, two thousand trials, each one potentially a wicket or hit for miles. Concentration demanded because no two are the same. From the Cathedral to the City End, making cricket bring us together again, forever and ever and ever.Support the show: https://theadelaideshow.com.au/listen-or-download-the-podcast/adelaide-in-crowd/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

With special guest: Jeff Apter in conversation with Bill Kable Bon Scott as his name might suggest was born in Scotland but after his parents signed up to be £10 Poms he arrived in Australia at the age of 6 to a new life. That short life was filled to the brim and Bon provided plenty of his own commentary on his wild adventures before and during his time with the world beating rock band AC/DC. Our guest today is writer Jeff Apter the author of Bad Boy Boogie, a new book published by Allen & Unwin. Jeff is very familiar with the AC/DC story having previously written about other members of the band the Young brothers and original bass player Mark Evans. When we speak with Jeff again today we are able to go behind the scenes to find out how Bon fitted in so quickly and easily with the Young brothers in their closely guarded troupe. We find out more about the real Bon Scott, his wild side where a party could go on for days but also how many women who came into his orbit described his as a real gentleman. Podcast (mp3)

In this episode, Jack, Matt, and Chippy dissect England's latest calamitous performance. Is it time for Bazball 2.0 or is this just another 'moral victory' for the Poms? The lads go deep on what it's really going to take for the Three Lions to recover some semblance of dignity, and perhaps even win a game of cricket abroad. It's a bumpy road ahead, and we're here for the ride. Then, we turn our attention to the hot mess that is the BCCI's red-ball setup. Coach Gautam Gambhir is facing a social media firing squad after recent Test losses, but are the calls to sack him justified? The team is in transition, the preparation is a shambles, and the pressure is mounting. We cut through the noise to figure out if it's Gambhir's tactics or a deeper structural failure that's the real issue. Unpacking a 25-7 loss to the Poms is about as much fun as an ice pick lobotomy, which coincidentally is what Mitch and Lachie would've preferred to recording this episode. However the boys have bravely soldiered on to pick through the Wallabies' limp remains from Twickenham, rehash the age-old flyhalf debate, and trade horror stories about another Italian Job against the Azzurri this weekend. Will the overseas Aussies make their return in Udine? Might we see Carter Gordon back in Wallaby Gold? Big pod today, we start by discussing the great win by the Australian Women in the International Crown in South Korea. Sensational! A wonderful performance.Speaking of fantastic womens golf, Nick was excited to see Yani Tseng back in the winners circle, and what a finish it was. It's been a long time, great to see her back.Mark has a history of, from time to time, teeing off on local councils. And today he has a bee in his bonnet about a local council and what they have done to a suburban Melbourne golf course. Then, we talk yips. Risky territory we realise that. But we chat about the yips, how they occur, how to fix them, and hear some hilarious stories on the way. Mark talks about being a tad yippy at one point and how he fixed it, Nick explains why he moved to putting right-handed and what he had to learn to do, and Mark tells us what he calls 'the greatest yipping story ever'. A bold claim, but to be fair, it's a pretty funny story. Mark raises Peter 'Pom' O'Malley and his flirtation with a bit of yip activity, and wants to confirm whether his memory is correct so he texts Shags, Poms caddy, to ask him for clarification.A fantastic Touch of Class for BMW today featuring Michael Brennan, who won his first PGA tour event at the weekend, however the Touch of Class is not about his performance as such, but something else related. After the turn we launch a massive opportunity for one wolfpacker. We have a spot in the Victorian PGA event coming up in early December to give to one Talk Birdie listener! It's a Pro AM, so you'll be partnered with a Tour Pro and in the same group as last years winner Tim Snow (of FootJoy). To have a shot - send us a pic of you rocking a pair of FootJoy's, your handicap (you need one to play), where you play your golf, and a video of your swing would be fun to see as well. We'll pick 10 finalists, and randomly draw one on the pod in a couple of weeks. If you're in Melbourne you're sorted. If you're interstate, regional or international, we'll fly you to Melbourne and put you up for the time you're here. Send your entry to us either via socials, our website or email it here.Top 5 for Betr is on, what else, the Top 5 'yippers' of all time. Yikes.Nick runs us around the world in what really was quite a massive weekend of golf in the PING Global results.Been a long show today, so a shorter version of feedback for Southern Golf Club - we always love to hear from wolfpackers, keep it coming. And we wrap with a masterclass from Nick, for watchMynumbers, inspired by Yani Tseng on putting the opposite way. We're live from Titleist and FootJoy HQ thanks to our great partners:BMW, luxury and comfort for the 19th hole;Titleist, the #1 ball in golf;FootJoy, the #1 shoe and glove in golf;PING will help you play your best;Golf Clearance Outlet, they beat everyone's prices;Betr, the fastest and easiest betting app in Australia; And watchMynumbers and Southern Golf Club.
