Investors in credit markets pay close attention to the latest economic data. Our head of Corporate Credit Research explains why they should be less focused on the newest numbers and more focused on whether and how those numbers are changing.--------Transcript--------Welcome to Thoughts on the Market. I'm Andrew Sheets, head of Corporate Credit Research at Morgan Stanley. Along with my colleagues bringing you a variety of perspectives, I'll be talking about trends across the global investment landscape, and how we put those ideas together. It's Friday, February 9th at 2pm in London.Almost every week, investors are confronted with a host of economic data. A perennial question hovers over each release: should we focus more on the level of that particular economic indicator; or its rate of change. In many cases, we find that the rate of change is more important for credit. If so, recent data has brought some encouraging developments with surveys of US Manufacturing, as well as bank lending.I'm mindful that the concept of “economic data” is about as abstract as you can get. So let's dig into those specific manufacturing and lending releases. Every quarter, the Federal Reserve conducts what is known as their Senior Loan Officer [Opinion] Survey, where they ask senior loan officers – at banks – about how they're doing their lending. The most recent release showed that more officers are tightening their lending standards than easing them. But the balance between the two is actually getting a little better, or looser, than last quarter. So, should we care more about the fact that lending standards are tight? Or that they're getting a little less tight than before?Or consider the Purchasing Managers Index, or PMI, from the Institute of Supply Management. This is a survey of purchasing managers at American manufacturers, asking them about business conditions. The latest readings show conditions are still weaker than normal. But things are getting better, and have improved over the last six months. In both cases, if we look back at history, the rate of change of the indicator has mattered more. As a credit investor, you've preferred tight credit conditions that are getting better versus easy credit that's getting worse. You've preferred weaker manufacturing activity that's inflecting higher instead of strong conditions that are softening. In that sense, at least for credit, recent readings of both of these indicators are a good thing – all else equal. But why do we get this result? Why, in many cases, does the rate of change matter more than the level? There are many different possibilities, and we'd stress this is far from an iron rule. But one explanation could be that markets tend to be quite aware of conditions and forward looking. In that sense, the level of the data at any given point in time is more widely expected; less of a surprise, and less likely to move the market. But the rate of change can – and we'd stress can – offer some insight into where the data might be headed. That future is less known. And thus anything that gives a hint of where things are headed is more likely to not already be reflected in current prices. No rule applies in all situations. But for credit, when in doubt, root for a positive rate of change. Thanks for listening. Subscribe to Thoughts on the Market on Apple Podcasts, or wherever you listen, and leave us a review. We'd love to hear from you.

We can become accustomed to the rate at which we experience change, and imagine that that rate will continue to increase linearly.Eventually, change will level off. We accumulate fewer skills later in our careers, our network of connections might seem to top out, or our salary bumps slow down.If we know that change tends to follow a logarithmic shape, we can prepare and plan better for the changing rate of change.

Abstract: To migrate efficiently, neutrophils must polarize their cytoskeletal regulators along a single axis of motion. This polarization process is thought to be mediated through local positive feedback that amplifies leading edge signals and global negative feedback that enables sites of positive feedback to compete for dominance. Though this two-component model efficiently establishes cell polarity, it has potential limitations, including a tendency to "lock" onto a particular direction, limiting the ability of cells to reorient. We use spatially-defined optogenetic control of a leading edge organizer (PI3K) to probe how cells balance "decisiveness" needed to polarize in a single direction with the flexibility needed to respond to new cues. Underlying this balancing act is a local Rac inhibitor that destabilizes the leading edge to promote exploration. We show that this local inhibitor enables cells to process input signal dynamics, linking front stability and orientation to local temporal increases in input signals. World's rapid rate of change resulting in profound business disruptions, says Anglo CEO

The world changing at a rapid rate has resulted in profound disruptions to the business of Anglo American, CEO Duncan Wanblad told analysts and investors on Friday. Speaking during an update presentation covered by Mining Weekly, Wanblad said the London- and Johannesburg-listed diversified mining and marketing company was seeing many more volatile and geopolitical and sociopolitical issues arising that affect the business. One of those issues is giving rise to the company taking longer to obtain permits and maintain permits. “If you add to that the impact to supply chains from the significant market dislocations that are created by conflicts that are happening more dominantly over the world, these are pushing economies, if they are not already there, into recession. “There are material impacts arising from that, on top of what we have seen over the last few years, as rising and legitimate, I believe, societal set of expectations for companies like mining companies,” Wanblad added. Inflation now being in Anglo's costs was also coming to bear in the cost of capital, with the impact of all of this being exacerbated by real evidence of climate change. Weather events were, he said, becoming more and more extreme and more and more frequent, and Anglo was having to take that into account as it planned the forward direction of the business. Anglo had responded to these challenges, despite personnel shortages and turnover of skills availability in various jurisdictions across the world, the impact of supply dislocations and the high inflationary environment. What had put the company on a good footing for 2023 and enabled it to execute the balance of its business plan was the way it had got back to the basics of mining with, in many areas, completely new workforces. He conceded, however, that considerable work still had to be done to elevate the operating model to a level at which it is able to continue to present sustainable and safe performance. “But is now significantly further advanced than it was this time last year,” said Wanblad. Notwithstanding the recovery of the second half of this year from the gritty first half, thought was still having to be given to whether any fundamental systemic short-to-medium term issues remained as the company progressed through its planning process. DIFFICULT GRADES Ore qualities were among three sets of issues impacting the business on a go-forward basis that analysts and investors needed to be cognizant of. “We are seeing very difficult grades, much lower grades, recoveries, and challenges with very hard ore in our operations in Chile, at our platinum group metals operations in South Africa, in our South American nickel and iron-ore businesses. “We call this mining inflation and we saw this coming at us at some point in time. We had an expectation that through our technology programmes and through our market management programmes that we would offset the rate at which some of this mining inflation was impacting the business. “But realistically, given the fact that we were operating for a couple of years with very people in the work face that our technical teams were not able to deploy to these operations, we just have not been able to get ahead of them at the pace at which we expected to get ahead of them in the previous guidance. “That doesn't mean there isn't still an opportunity here for us. I think that there is. We have some of the technical ideas and developments that will deal with these sorts of ore characteristics. We're just delayed in deploying those,” he said. The second set of issues fall within logistical and operational parameters, affecting primarily Kumba Iron Ore in South Africa's Northern Cape and the steelmaking coal business in Australia, where longwall operations are restarting after a two-year hiatus, and the rate of building the operations back to full production needing to proceed at a slower pace owing to tighter regulatory conditions. The primary constraint of running...

The enormous disruptions in healthcare caused by the pandemic have given Eric Larsen plenty of occasions to recall some wisdom he once heard from a pastor: “In times of volatility and upheaval, learning has to be greater than or equal to the rate of change.” So that’s one reason why as president of the Advisory Board, Larsen spends about 25 hours per week studying changes in the healthcare system. Its incredible complexity is one reason the Advisory Board has long been valued by healthcare leaders as a disseminator of deeply-researched best practices. An alliance with Optum forged in 2017 is providing opportunities to be more involved in actually enabling change, something which Larsen says has been energizing. One of his roles is to regularly advise CEO’s of the 100 largest systems in the country who control a huge swath of the $1.3 trillion sector. “We try to be at the epicenter of all of this dynamic energy in healthcare to understand where the innovation is happening, where the disruptions are emerging and how do we understand them and harness them,” he says. Check out this penetrating discussion with host Rishi Desai to get a view into what structural shifts are underway, and what kind of support providers need to become more efficient and patient-centered.
