The spins of stripped B stars support magnetic internal angular momentum transport

The spins of stripped B stars support magnetic internal angular momentum transport by C. Schürmann et al. on Tuesday 29 November In order to predict the spins of stellar remnants we need to understand the evolution of the internal rotation of stars, and to identify at which stage the rotation of the contracting cores of evolved stars decouples from their expanding envelopes. The donor stars of mass transferring binaries lose almost their entire envelope and may thus offer a direct view on their core rotation. After the mass transfer event they contract and fade rapidly, although they are well observable when caught in the short-lived B-star phase. The B-type primary of the galactic binary system LB-1, which was originally suggested to contain a massive black hole, is nicely explained as a stripped star accompanied by a fainter Be star. The narrow absorption lines in the primary's spectrum signify extremely slow rotation, atypical of B-type main-sequence stars. Here we investigate the evolution of mass donors in generic grids of detailed binary evolution models, where both stars include differential rotation, internal angular momentum transport, and spin-orbit coupling. Whereas the mass gainers are typically spun-up during the mass transfer, we find that the spins of the stripped donor models depend sensitively on the employed mechanism for internal angular momentum transport. Purely hydrodynamic transport cannot explain the observed slow rotation, while models including magnetic angular momentum transport are able to reproduce the observed rotation of LB-1 and similar stars, independent of the initial rotation rate. In such models the spin of the white dwarfs that emerge at the end of the evolution is independent of the mass stripping. Reading the tea leaves in the M rm bh - M rm *,sph and M rm bh - R rm e,sph diagrams: dry and gaseous mergers with remnant angular momentum by Alister W. Graham et al. on Tuesday 18 October We recently revealed that bulges and elliptical galaxies broadly define distinct, super-linear relations in the $M_{rm bh}$-$M_{rm *,sph}$ diagram, with the order-of-magnitude lower $M_{rm bh}/M_{rm *,sph}$ ratios in the elliptical galaxies due to major (disc-destroying, elliptical-building) dry mergers. Building on this, here we present a more nuanced picture. Galaxy mergers, in which the net orbital angular momentum does not cancel, can lead to systems with a rotating disc. This situation can occur with either wet (gas-rich) mergers involving one or two spiral galaxies, e.g., NGC 5128, or dry (gas-poor) collisions involving one or two lenticular galaxies, e.g., NGC 5813. The spheroid and disc masses of the progenitor galaxies and merger remnant dictate the shift in the $M_{rm bh}$-$M_{rm *,sph}$ and $M_{rm bh}$-$R_{rm e,sph}$ diagrams. We show how this explains the (previously excluded merger remnant) S'ersic S0 galaxies near the bottom of the elliptical sequence and core-S'ersic S0 galaxies at the top of the bulge sequence, neither of which are faded spiral galaxies. We also introduce two ellicular (ES) galaxy types, explore the location of brightest cluster galaxies and stripped `compact elliptical' galaxies in the $M_{rm bh}$-$M_{rm *,sph}$ diagram, and present a new merger-built $M_{rm bh}$-$M_{rm *,sph}$ relation which may prove helpful for studies of nanohertz gravitational waves. Flux eruption events drive angular momentum transport in magnetically arrested accretion flows by Koushik Chatterjee et al. on Monday 17 October We evolve two high-resolution general relativistic magnetohydrodynamic (GRMHD) simulations of advection-dominated accretion flows around non-spinning black holes (BHs), each over a duration $sim 3times 10^5,GM_{rm BH}/c^3$. One model captures the evolution of a weakly magnetized (SANE) disk and the other a magnetically arrested disk (MAD). Magnetic flux eruptions in the MAD model push out gas from the disk and launch strong winds with outflow efficiencies at times reaching $10%$ of the incoming accretion power. Despite the substantial power in these winds, average mass outflow rates remain small out to a radius $sim100,GM_{rm BH}/c^2$, only reaching $sim 60-80%$ of the horizon accretion rate. The average outward angular momentum transport is primarily radial in both modes of accretion, but with a clear distinction: magnetic flux eruption-driven disk winds cause a strong vertical flow of angular momentum in the MAD model, while for the SANE model, the magnetorotational instability (MRI) moves angular momentum mostly equatorially through the disk. Further, we find that the MAD state is highly transitory and non-axisymmetric, with the accretion mode often changing to a SANE-like state following an eruption before reattaining magnetic flux saturation with time. The Reynolds stress changes direction during such transitions, with the MAD (SANE) state showing an inward (outward) stress, possibly pointing to intermittent MRI-driven accretion in MADs. Pinning down the nature of flux eruptions using next-generation telescopes will be crucial in understanding the flow of mass, magnetic flux and angular momentum in sub-Eddington accreting BHs like M87$^*$ and Sagittarius A$^*$. arXiv: http://arxiv.org/abs/http://arxiv.org/abs/2210.08045v1

Baryonic Effects on Lagrangian Clustering and Angular Momentum Reconstruction by Ming-Jie Sheng et al. on Monday 10 October Recent studies illustrate the correlation between the angular momenta of cosmic structures and their Lagrangian properties. However, only baryons are observable and it is unclear whether they reliably trace the cosmic angular momenta. We study the Lagrangian mass distribution, spin correlation and predictability of dark matter, gas, and stellar components of galaxy-halo systems using IllustrisTNG, and show that the primordial segregations between components are typically small. Their proto-shapes are also similar in terms of the statistics of moment of inertia tensors. Under the common gravitational potential they are expected to be exerted the same tidal torque and the strong spin correlations are not destroyed by the nonlinear evolution and complicated baryonic effects, as confirmed by the high-resolution hydrodynamic simulations. We further show that their late time angular momenta traced by total gas, stars, or the central galaxies, can be reliably reconstructed by the initial perturbations. How can the Hubble Space Telescope turn around in space? How do ice-skaters spin so fast? Taking a look at gyroscopes, this lecture explores the common threads that link all spinning things. Today I talk with Chandler Walker of https://stoneagefuel.com/ (StonageFuel) about how to completely change your life.  They use a method that addresses every aspect of your life from fitness, to finances, so that at the end of the 12 weeks, you've changed. Chandler started StonageFuel after deciding that med school wasn't for him. He had been shadowing a doctor, and he found that they treat suffering instead of preventing it. Chandler wanted to tackle the problem at the root so he set out to create a wellness clinic. During our conversation we talk about what it's like to start a business, and sleep on the couch for the first year or so. We then drift into talking about how to help clients. In Chandler's business they use the method of Pillars of Angular Momentum. These pillars address aspects of people's live including fitness, finance, mental health, spiritual health and more. Today was an insightful conversation because Chandler points out that people do not change unless they get extremely clear with their reason. He often asks people why they want his help. They give him an answer, but then he digs deeper to the real reason.  So often, we give ourselves false reasons to change. We need to be brutally honest with why we are changing before we can ever make that change. Chandler also mentioned how to hire the right people for your business. He explained that it's important to spend time digging down to the person's motivations.  That seems like a pretty good life lesson.
