I'm learning right along with you in this episode, offering strategies for how to go through an overwhelming number of photos, and best ways to organize them once we declutter. We also dive a bit deeper into the importance of photos. How can we be intentional about preserving memories instead of picking up the phone simply because that's what we're used to doing? What are we so afraid of in terms of not documenting every moment and experience? We also talk a bit about hard copy photos and what to do with all those 4x6s from high school or summer camp 2002. Dare to Learn.https://diegolainez.com.mx/

The Paper Fold

So, you've created an amazing product, but if you've ever wrestled with how to style it, you should have a quick word with my guest today. Erika Firm describes herself as an "artist, surface designer, graphic designer, brand builder, magazine hoarder, kitty squisher, wife, and mother," but that doesn't begin to scratch the broad scope of her experience and expertise.Erika's stationery range, Delphine, differentiated itself from the many other letterpressers at the time by approaching paper as not just a surface, but a distinctive design element in its own right. Since closing Delphine's doors, Erika's talent for delving deeply into the analog world of paint, pen, ink, and paper — as well as the wondrous results she reaps — have been much in demand. Her client list reads like a who's who of the gift and stationery industries, and includes American Greetings, Anthropologie, Cardstore,  HP Smiles, Ink, Keka, Knithouse, Maison Belle, Minted, Postable, Revel & Co., Revel Paper, Simply to Impress, Snapfish, Society6, Tiny Prints, Wedding Paper Divas, and Zazzle, among many others.Erika's artful eye for presentation is legendary; when she sends me images, the question is never, "Will there be something I can use?" but rather, "How will I ever pick a favorite?" The design wonders that are generated from her four-generation home in Charleston, South Carolina — Erika resides with not just her husband and son, but mother and grandmother as well — are not just a testament to her talent, but the true potential of paper.**Thank You Sponsors**Please be sure to support these all-American, women-owned houses of paper.Girl w/Knife is your incredibly sharp new stationery BFF. May became National Photography Month in 1987 when Congress recognized the role photography plays in modern society. The American Photographers Association one of the primary backers and supporters of Photography Month. There are activities, exhibits, and sales all month.  Here are some fun ways to participate. With the advent of digital imaging interest decreased but then returned in 2007.  National Photography Month ActivitiesPhotograph  everyday moments   Make a plan to document your life for your descendants. Think of topics like grandma in the kitchen.  Toys. cars.   Perhaps you already document your life. There are Covid themed archives around the world now. Ordinary people and archivists are collecting images, audio, and video (plus more) so that future folk will have the material context to understand the time in which we live.  Is there one in your area?  Ask a local history librarian or a Reference person, they are bound to know.Make a photobook.  It doesn't matter if you use a word processing program or something more sophisticated like Shutterfly or Snapfish.  Chatbooks  turn social media into browseable books with little effort.Send a photo card  With Felt  a new app. Old photo or new  There is a new app I can't wait to try. It's called Felt and it helps you create cards with digital images and then mails them.  Oooh.  Do I know a few folks that need a family history pick me up. Bet you do too.Your pet. Set up an Instagram account for your pet or feature them on Tik Tok.  Dogs and cats are often internet sensations and videos/photos of them go viral. Try it and see.  Pet not really of interest then start an instagram account for your family photos. Watermark each one before uploading using umarkonline.comMerge Your Family photos and genealogical information together into a book your descendants will love to look at.   There is nothing like the storytelling potential when you merge images and information. It's hard for genealogists to accept sometimes that their family isn't always interested in the tree you've built but add in some photos and tell some stories and they'll be hooked.Virtually Visit a photo gallery or museum.  During this pandemic, many museums began offering virtual programming. Some through Facebook, others through YouTube, and some through their website. What's your favorite museum?  The Museum of the American Revolution's Facebook page offers short presentations by conservators and artisans.  You can take a virtual tour at The Tenement Museum in New York There are so many options.Become the family photographer.   Smartphone or digital SLR, just start snapping and Enroll in a photography course. It doesn't matter whether it's at a local college, online, at a local hobby store. it's a skill you won't regret acquiring.I can't wait to go out in the world again.  While I'm home, I'm in planning mode. So, you've created an amazing product, but if you've ever wrestled with how to style it, you should have a quick word with my guest today. Erika Firm describes herself as an "artist, surface designer, graphic designer, brand builder, magazine hoarder, kitty squisher, wife, and mother," but that doesn't begin to scratch the broad scope of her experience and expertise. Erika's stationery range, Delphine, differentiated itself from the many other letterpressers at the time by approaching paper as not just a surface, but a distinctive design element in its own right. Since closing Delphine's doors, Erika's talent for delving deeply into the analog world of paint, pen, ink, and paper — as well as the wondrous results she reaps — have been much in demand. Her client list reads like a who's who of the gift and stationery industries, and includes American Greetings, Anthropologie, Cardstore, HP Smiles, Ink, Keka, Knithouse, Maison Belle, Minted, Postable, Revel & Co., Revel Paper, Simply to Impress, Snapfish, Society6, Tiny Prints, Wedding Paper Divas, and Zazzle, among many others. Erika's artful eye for presentation is legendary; when she sends me images, the question is never, "Will there be something I can use?" but rather, "How will I ever pick a favorite?" The design wonders that are generated from her four-generation home in Charleston, South Carolina — Erika resides with not just her husband and son, but mother and grandmother as well — are not just a testament to her talent, but the true potential of paper. **Thank You Sponsors** Please be sure to support these all-American, women-owned houses of paper. Girl w/Knife is your incredibly sharp new stationery BFF. Check out this award-winning, ultra-polished range that everyone's talking about — it slays on several brilliant levels! Kitty Meow Boutique was founded on the idea that your paper goods don't have to be a snooze fest. These stylish, laugh-out-loud selections are by turns sassy and sweet, all the while maintaining a consistent cool.

And we dive into each one. Candice and I talk about her experiences with race, equity, diversity and the weight of racism and implicit bias on her career and daily professional life. She shares how she felt safe in our affiliate community, how things changed as she grew in her career and what it feels like to have that weight lifted. It is definitely an enlightening and eye opening conversation. Please be sure to listen. We dive into weed as well. Yup, you read that right. We talk about the marketing of it, the opportunities and difficulties and how people have responded to her coming out as a recreational and medicinal user of the plant. You'll also hear me stumble as I try to say the word “marijuana” on this podcast. Listening again, it's quite funny.Candice is an incredible individual with so much to share and I can't be more proud to have her on the show. It's our longest yet, but I think you'll find it worth every single minute. We are totally going to have her back soon. You can reach out to Candice at candiceATpapersandink.comOh, hey traditional affiliates, you may be missing a ton of revenue opportunity if you are not promoting marijuana products. Dear Family,
Rachel Steinman Discusses Sharenting- When a Child has to Teach their Parent About Consent and the Implications of a Digital Footprint She Didn’t Create

Dear Family,

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 2, 2019 13:51

Sharenting (or oversharenting)- noun- When parents overshare photos and other data of their children on social media. Sharenting is the overuse of social media by parents sharing content based on their children, such as baby pictures or details of their children’s activities. It’s related to the concept of TMI, or “Too Much Information.” Pediatricians are starting to consider how sharenting affects childhood well-being and family life. I have a podcast called Dear Family, and it’s all about our complicated and wonderful families, parenting, and finding mental wellness. I also have a beautiful family, specifically two stunning, talented, and bright teenage daughters I am immensely proud of. (Yes, I know I sound like a biased mother, which of course I am.) If I could, I’d share images of their activities and their accomplishments left and right on all my social media platforms because it feels like a mother’s prerogative. If you were able to look at my private Facebook and Instagram accounts, you would see that it is exactly what I used to do…but not anymore. I’ve been warned by my daughters to no longer post any pictures of them on social media without their permission, and the orders are strict. Sharenting is a new phenomenon, where parents, particularly mothers, feel driven to share their children’s images and life stories on the internet. Some parents use posts of their children as a means of upward social comparison, where they want other people to envy them. When parents do this, they’re not thinking about their child’s well-being but rather, they’re focused on their status. I will admit to being one of those mothers at times, something I’m not proud of because it feels like I’m bragging to find validation. When my daughters ask why I feel the need to document our experiences online, I’ve said things like, “So I can look back over time and enjoy it again.” Or I’ve said, “One of my favorite things about Facebook is getting memories from up to 11 years ago, reminding me of how little and adorable you were and of the fun times we had together.” They shake their heads, knowing I can just look back at the pictures on my phone or laptop. What I have to remember is my daughters (and your kids) are the first generation to inherit a social media presence they never asked for and it comes with privacy concerns. In 2002, when my first daughter was born, Facebook and smartphones that took photos weren’t in existence. I made good old fashioned physical photo albums by transferring her baby photos from a digital camera onto my desktop computer. It seemed like a huge jump in technology from when I used to drop the film off at a Kodak development kiosk and have to drive back days later to pick it up, hoping out of the 36 photos I took some would be worthy. But with a digital camera, I could upload the images of my baby to a site like Snapfish or Shutterfly and order them to be delivered by mail. Because I was a proud new mommy and wanted my close friends and family to witness her cuteness and what we as a new family were up to, I’d send them a link to the album. I loved hearing the feedback and being able to ask Amber’s grandparents which copies they wanted. In 2008, when my daughters were six and three years old, Facebook was introduced into my life. I stopped making physical photo albums and started making digital ones stored in the cloud. And I was far from alone. Our social media feeds continue to be jam-packed with cute, quirky, and sometimes embarrassing photos and videos of children posted by their parents, likely without their permission. Pediatricians and researchers are now asking if sharenting is a problem for our children as our digital footprints spread wider and seemingly last forever. Screenshots and internet archive sites can continue the life of any social post long after an account has been deleted. This means fleeting childhood moments, some potentially embarrassing or harmful, become a permanent record. We were all awkward teens at some point, so imagine how you’d feel if your mom shared an image of you far and wide when you had pimples, a funny hairstyle, and braces, and you knew it was permanent? Now here’s the irony. Whereas Baby Boomers and Gen-X’ers believe their privacy is paramount, Millenials and Gen-Z’ers view their privacy differently. For example, the younger generations might be fine being public on their Venmo account to let anyone know who and what they are paying for. And yet, understandably they want and deserve to be asked before a parent shares a picture of them in a bathing suit on a family vacation. When I see little kids posing for multiple pictures, I can’t help but wonder if the parent behind the camera is overly focused on her social media feed rather than being in the moment and being present. We as parents are culpable. According to Barclay’s, by 2030, sharenting could account for 7 million incidents of identity theft that would result in 800 million dollars in online fraud. About a year ago, after spending hours going through hundreds of professional digital photos taken at a momentous family celebration, I wanted to create an online album to share with my Dear Family and Friends on Facebook and Instagram. After the album had been up for about half a day and had gotten a substantial amount of likes and comments, my oldest daughter logged onto Instagram and saw an image of herself she didn’t approve of. She asked me to take it down, explaining how I should have asked her first and how I needed to respect her wishes and her privacy. I tried to reason with her, saying how beautiful she looked, but she stood her ground. While I was the one who often cautioned my daughters about their safety, there Amber was, acting as the adult and cautioning me. Amber schooled me on the risks I was unwittingly exposing her by bringing up facial recognition tracking and down the road college admissions and job prospects. I felt like such a hypocrite because I had warned her about what she shared publicly, especially with Snapchat’s geo-location, fearing creepy old men might follow her accounts. We had discussed the idea of consent in the past, and how she had a voice that mattered and was in control of her own body and her own decisions. And yet I hadn’t shown her the decency of asking her consent? And what about the risks of pedophilia, data broker profiling, hacking, and other threats to her privacy and security I overlooked? There is a phenomenon called “digital kidnapping” and its when images of babies, children, teens, and even adults are used without anyone's permission for advertising or fake social media profiles. It’s most disturbing when used on pedophile image-sharing sites. Now that I’ve put the fear in you all, let’s not forget social media does have its benefits and can be an incredible tool to keep us connected. Without Facebook and Instagram, how else would I see what my East Coast cousins and their kids are doing or learn about a fun goat walk in the mountains I want to join? How else would I spread the message of finding mental wellness through my writing and podcasting to a wider audience? If we remember to model good posting behaviors by being thoughtful and cautious about what we post, taking into consideration what our kids are wearing in images and checking the privacy settings, our kids will learn the same habits. Good modeling behavior leads to good habits that could later protect our kids, teenagers, and young adults from making poor decisions about sharing nude images or explicit material. But it’s a conversation and one we need to continually have. By asking our kids (or spouses, friends, colleagues, etc.) for permission, we are modeling good social media etiquette and teaching: Respect Boundaries Self-control Their image belongs to them The importance and the value of privacy Empowerment through choice Social media manners I will continue to be proud of my daughters and want to share their great accomplishments with the world. I just will ask permission first.   SHOW NOTE LINKS:   Sharenting- Rachel’s Essay on Medium Rachel’s Essay on Medium- How to Stop Yelling at our Kids Over their Device Use Dear Family, Podcast Episode with Devorah Heitner about Growing Up as a Digital Native   CONNECT WITH US! *Dear Family, Podcast Page *Write Now Rachel Website *Rachel's Blog @Medium *Rachel’s Twitter *Facebook *Instagram   PLEASE JOIN: ***Dear Family Members, the Private Facebook Group       WAYS TO HELP THE PODCAST: *PLEASE Leave a 5-Star Review.        *SHARE with your Dear Friends and Family,.      AND   ***Listen and Subscribe via iTunes!!!  ***Listen and Subscribe via Stitcher!!! ***Listen and Subscribe via Spotify!!!   Thank you! Throughout the entire history of business, marketers have always been concerned with promoting their product or service to buyers. But then a new business model arose: Marketplace-based businesses like Uber and Airbnb not only market to buyers, but to sellers as well. How does this new dynamic change the job of a marketer? To find out, we talked to Kevin Frisch, CMO of Wag!, a marketplace for dog-walking services. On this episode of Marketing Trends, Kevin talks about best practices for marketplace marketing, his best tips for a first-time CMO, his favorite campaigns he has ever been a part of, and much more. This includes promotions, acquisitions, and incentives on either side of the marketplace. - Many companies that you don't think of as marketplace companies have a lot marketplace dynamics, and marketers can learn a lot by thinking of them in that way. - Market education is a crucial part of developing a marketplace. Education content develops a relationship with potential customers and eases them into the market. - "In the many, many analyses I've done, getting something wrong with a customer and then fixing it makes them more loyal than if you'd never gotten it wrong in the first place." - Kevin Frisch - "Companies I've seen where they have the brand team here and the performance marketing team here, they end up just being so disconnected, and so having them sort of unified fairly closely I think is really, really important." - Kevin Frisch Bio: Kevin Frisch is the CMO of Wag!, an on-demand dog-walking platform. Kevin joined Wag! from Uber where he served as head of performance marketing and CRM for North America and was responsible for acquisition, engagement, and retention of drivers, couriers, riders, and eaters. #9 - Symmetry, Schools & Fools   Symmetry in sculpting appliances Whilst teaching a class recently, a student was hung up on getting the nose perfectly symmetrical. I explained as I often do that the human face isn't symmetrical, so going for complete mirror image reflection necessary. That said, asymmetry owing to sloppy work isn't good either - the fact that there is little perfect symmetry in nature doesn't let you off the hook! I remember at college sculpting a full size head and a full size figure from life and using a plumb line - basically a piece of string with a lead weight on the end to keep a straight line. That helps you keep on target with the centre line, and you can use callipers to measure and plot common points to sketch out boundaries like where the eye corners start and finish, where the mouth is in relation to the nose etc. This sounds like a video to be honest - again comment, write and let us know what you think.  stuartandtodd@gmail.com …also check out our facebook page!   Folio Whilst at UMAE last week, I got to speaking with a lot of people starting out who wanted me to take a look at their folios. I like to talk people through what I see, and I know that when I was starting out that I really appreciated good advice from people that took the time to look through my stuff. Shows like this are good but they can be intense, with groups of people all descending at once when they notice a folio show. There were some good pieces and I will be straight with people regarding the work, and although there are many approaches to folio layout, there are a few solid consistent aspects to a folio that I think remain regardless. Good clear and large images With digital cameras, there's little excuse for blurry or badly exposed images. If images are taken on set where there is low level light, it's fair enough that on occasion the pics would be less than perfect, but if you are responsible for building something, there is plenty of opportunity to take good clear images. Opt for professional prints - online print developers like Snapfish and Photobox for example will send you great 10x8's (A4 ish) sized photos. You may have a great printer but often this works out more expensive than buying prints, and they rarely weather well over time. Not too many and not too long Viewer fatigue is not the intended result of an extensive folio, but I think it's fair to say that after a while, your brain can't take in new things with equal enthusiasm. If you have extensively documented the manufacture process of something, you need to edit that down to a few choice images unless there is a specific reason to dwell on that aspect. It may be worth keeping your main 'general' folio streamlined with a few selected images from each project, and then keep to hand additional more in-depth folios which drill deeper into things should that be necessary. Easy to handle If a folio keeps dropping leaves or sheets slide around or can't fold over easy then it becomes a bit of a chore to handle. Make sure you handle a folio and turn the pages yourself before committing to buy. If it annoys you to handle, then chances are it will annoy others too. It's a tragedy for your good work to not be noticed as the viewer is tasked with wrangling the sleeves or relocating misaligned punched holes.   UMAE 2016 The UMAe stand for United Makeup Artists expo. It is a smaller UK trade show, but perfectly formed. I had a great time but it was exhausting. There were loads of demos going on all day, and this year I had my own stand, spoke to a lot of people, did a demo makeup and a presentation on the stage for blood rig effects. I wanted to do a thing on blood rigs as I have done quite a few for shows over the years, and plenty on gags for Game of Thrones, and NDA's stop me from showing anyone how I actually do them, so I decided to do a demo of my own so I could show the process from start to finish without showing anything from the show.  I had a couple of cool people helping me out too - Alice Pinney and Jess Heath who applied loads of pieces I made, so thanks for the help guys. You worked hard! Also thanks to Leanne Hicks who helped me out loads as well as patiently modelling for my makeup demo, a creepy kind of stern looking businesswoman was the idea, but it kind of ended up looking like an evil politician. I called her Angular Merkel, but we settled on The Wicked Which of the Westminster. I'll do this as a blog post if anyone is interested - please get in touch and leave comments under this blog post or podcast Show was nice feel to it - you can actually go up to the people and speak to them. There isn't a stadium sized crowd to navigate so it's not a huge task to speak to the people you want to talk to.  Nor are there tanning booths, teeth whitening or champagne and strawberry bars. Said hey to Richard Redlefsen, and I gave him a few sculpting tools I had made which was a nice touch - I made a bunch of tools for a makeup school called The Iver based at Pinewood for which I did a class at the week before.  I knew he would be at the show so I made a few extra, and I got a kick out of giving them to him - nice guy and very talented makeup artist. He did a Phantom of the Opera makeup, and it was pretty cool. Also Dan Gilbert was demoing for PPI, and I needed some PAX. He dashed up to his room to grab me some which he had, which I thought was rather dashing of him so thank you for that Dan. True gent!   Makeup School Observations There are some things I noticed about work I saw from makeup schools, and I think it needs bringing up. Essentially, I saw work from someone who had travelled to LA from the UK to attend a makeup school for some months. There were pictures of work in there which seemed both extensive in size but poor in quality. Now I know students are by definition learning, and there is going to be mixed ability but there seems to be an irresponsible approach when allowing large scale sculpting to take place when there are some fundamental areas which need addressing. Makeup schools are a business so it's only right they charge for their service, but I have heard and seen many examples of people who travelled far and spent a lot and when you see what they have taken away from it then you wonder if it is a fair exchange. As with any business, there are some sharp practitioners and some outstanding examples. I think it would be a good idea to run this checklist over when considering a makeup school. Check who the tutors are Look at previous students work Speak to previous students Is there a screening process or do they take anyone who can pay?   Faceoff I've met a few of the contestants from the show, and to be honest they seem pretty cool - they need to have ability and character to get selected for sure. Hoever, the show is largely concerned with ratings (it's a TV show after all) and less concerned with processes which is what I care about.  We riff a little about the effects of the show, and how annoying it is that people whose only exposure to the industry is watching a few episodes feel qualified to comment on what we may be doing wrong.  "It didn't look that hard on Faceoff..."!   Face casting disasters We’ve all heard of the anecdotal face casts that went hideously wrong – the result of phenomenally terrible practice on the part of people doing it. Things like using bare plaster all over the face, bears and eyebrows becoming stuck or undercuts locking heads – it’s common sense mostly but that is not as common as you’d imagine. Anyhow, check out these howlers, and if you know of any outrageous lfecasting videos which are not here, please do get in touch and send us a link so we can share it!  Let’s show everyone how NOT to do it! https://vimeo.com/21710023 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sVUHlDou6cQ&feature=youtu.be&app=desktop https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=09rUbu33Z1E http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=077_1462827743 http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/uknews/law-and-order/6311398/Schoolgirl-16-lost-eight-fingers-in-plaster-of-Paris-accident-during-art-lesson.html   Incidentally, this video collaboration I did with Klaire de Lys shows a way to lifecast safely without taking insane risks: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2NyF5bKlkT0 Stay creative! It's Time to Deal With Your Photo Clutter

A few months ago, we sent out a survey on a topic that appears to be the bane of many listeners' existence: digital clutter. Over one third of respondents told us that the thing that drives them MOST crazy – the biggest, worst, most frustrating clutter quagmire in their lives – is photos. We promised you a podcast and a plan of attack, and our word was good (if a little bit, um, enthusiastic – listen above). With the help of organizational guru Alan Henry, Deputy Editor of Lifehacker, we've put together a customized step-by-step system to help you back up, sort, and organize your digital photo collection for the long haul. By then end of this process, you're going to be scrolling through your pictures and contemplating the role photos really play in our lives. But first, the time has come to get your photos in shape. Seriously. Now. It'll be more fun than you think. Mostly. The Note to Self System For Decluttering Your Photos and Coming to Terms With Your Mortality I. The Basic ToolsII. Decide How Deep You Want to Go Steps for the Casual Snapshooter Steps for the Moderate Snapshooter Steps for the Enthusiastic Snapshooter Find Your Photos: A List of Places to Look III. Tell Us What You Found (Part Two!) The Basic Tools According to Alan, these are the terms, tools, and basic tricks you'll need to get started – though how far you go with them is up to you. See: Deciding How Deep to Go. Back-up services: This is a centralized place on the cloud where you can get to the raw files of your photos if you need to. Alan recommends Dropbox, but iCloud, Google Drive, OneDrive or the like could serve a similar function, so long as you're willing to pay for extra storage. One work-around: sign up for an extra account just for photo storage purposes. Auto-upload: You have two options with your back-up service. The first is turning on the auto-upload feature, which means you'll be syncing the full-sized files to your computer. If you want to get these photos printed, use another service like Apple Photos or Picasa or Aperture, or plan to edit your photos with software such as Photoshop, this is a good idea. The other, more space-friendly option: leave that setting off, and instead be really judicious about how many of your photos you sync to your computer, or commit to going in and taking the ones you don't want down. This is going to take some introspection, some cutting-of-your-losses, and also maybe some back-up hardware. Back-up hardware: An external hard drive that can hold all of the files you don't want taking up space on your devices. It's the digital version of flossing your teeth. In this case, pick whatever works for you – if you've got less than 64 gigabytes of files you care about, a solid USB could work. If you've got a lot more than that (or if you just want to keep your options open), you should spring for an external hard drive. Photo management services: This is the service you'll use to help you categorize and sort through your pictures, whether that's by date, location, or content. Alan's favorite is Google Photos, which gives you unlimited space as long as your photos fall below a certain resolution (16 megapixels or 1080p HD video). You can set it so that Google will automatically reduce anything above that size to lower quality as well – for most people this should be just fine for organizing and digital-viewing purposes. From there, Google's photo categorization technology will help you label and organize the photos into albums and galleries. You could also choose a social media platform like Facebook or Instagram, you just have to commit to making them more or less public. Facial recognition: A type of deep learning used by such services as Google Photos to categorize and organize your photos. This comes with some very real caveats. Scanner: The best way to collect all your old physical photos and store them with your digitla photos. Alan says you can go high tech and buy a picture scanner (he recommends the Doxie or the Doxie Go WiFi) to scan them at home, or send them out to get scanned. Or – if you're OK with really low fidelity– you can just take a picture of the picture. Meta! Privacy/sharing settings: Be sure to double check that you're only sharing what you want to share, no matter which services you choose. That said, Alan Henry says his rule is to only upload the images he is OK with his friends and family seeing. The only way to absolutely ensure privacy (well, as much as we can possibly absolutely ensure privacy), is to avoid using the cloud altogether. In Alan's words: "As for what to snap and what not to snap - well, I'm not of the mindset that 'if you don't want it public you shouldn't take it or store it on the Internet' – that blames *people* for problems with *technology.* However, it's important to be mindful when you snap, and maybe take it into your own hands to choose what to upload and what not to, then back up or encrypt anything you want to save but don't want out of your reach to delete at any time. :)" via GIPHY Decide How Deep You Want to Go Alan thinks we all fit into one of three photo-taking categories: casual snapshooters, moderate snapshooters, and enthusiastic snapshooters. Figuring out which category you belong to will help you decide how far you really need to go in your personal photo-decluttering process.  You've been sorted! (Kristeli Zappa M./Note to Self) BUCKET 1: THE CASUAL SNAP SHOOTER Characteristics: You have a bunch of photos all over the place, but you're not as concerned about organizing the past as you are setting up a solid system for the future. You primarily take photos with your phone. Your goal is to go from disorganized to organized, not necessarily to group all of your photos in the same place. Your steps: Pick a system for automatic back-up. Download the app if you don't have it already. Turn on auto-upload. On Dropbox – Alan's pick – this is called “camera upload.” On Google Drive, this is “back-up and sync." On iOS, this is "iCloud photos." That's it! Save your password somewhere safe. Invest in an external hard drive if you're feeling really responsible. Digital hygiene, everybody. Be sure to tell us what you've found. BUCKET 2: THE MODERATE SNAP SHOOTER Characteristics:  For the most part, your photos are already digital – just in a billion different places. You may have a few old phones, some SD cards from a DSLR or other high-end digital camera, but you're not terribly concerned with really old physical photos. You probably have hundreds (or maybe a couple thousand but no more than that) of photos you care about, and want them to be organized, both past and present. Your Steps:  Turn on auto upload for your back-up system of choice (i.e., Dropbox). On Dropbox – Alan's pick – this is called “camera upload.” On Google Drive, this is “back-up and sync." On iOS, this is "iCloud photos." Choose your photo management service, and transfer the photos you care about the most into it (i.e. Google Photos.). Start hunting down the rest of the digital photos you really care about and pull them into your photo management service. Be judicious: What's really worth    migrating off of, say, that Flickr account you started and never went back to? Which Facebook Photos do you want to make sure you're saving in higher quality? Did you have a SmugMug account you need to check? Once you've uploaded the photos you care about most into this central service, look through the albums it has created for you. See where the system has sorted it correctly, and where it has gotten details wrong. Take over as the human here, and start adjusting into a system that will be meaningful to you. This can be as intense of a process as you choose, just be sure to label with names that will be memorable. (I.e., not “August 2015,” but “Trip to Paris With Family.”) This system should recognize dates and location at the very least. If they're wonky – and older photos probably will be – pick and choose which ones you care about correcting. Starting to sort through your photos will also help you jog your memory about any meaningful pictures you may have forgotten. Track them down, rinse, repeat. BUCKET 3: THE ENTHUSIASTIC SNAP SHOOTER Characteristics:  You have thousands of photos — probably more than Dropbox or Google Photos' drag-and-drop interfaces can handle in one go. You use multiple devices, including cameras with SD cards and phones. You're looking for all of your memories to be organized, both past and present. You might even want to organize all of the photos from the whole family's set of gadgets, like phones or tablets everyone uses. Your Steps: Pick a back-up system. Turn on auto-upload for your current and future photos. Let the current batch upload. This could take a few minutes. On Dropbox – Alan's pick – this is called “camera upload.” On Google Drive, this is “back-up and sync." On iOS, this is "iCloud photos." Once you're done uploading, drag and drop as many of your already-digital but easily-accessible photos from your back-up system to your photo management system. For now, draw the line at your primary devices—the laptops or computers you already use, the phone you already use, and the SD card currently in your favorite camera you've been meaning to back up. Aim to get the majority of your current and most recent photos centralized. Once the bulk of your current photos are on your two services, spend some time getting in touch with your memories again, building galleries and doing searches through your most recent upload. Look through the albums your photo management service has created for you, and see where the system has sorted it correctly, and where it has gotten details wrong. Start sorting into albums that will be meaningful to you. This can be as intense of a process as you choose, just be sure to label with names that will be memorable. You're also teaching the system which details actually matter to you. From here, start hunting down old photos to add to the collection. Then, batch by batch, pull in old folders. Then, as you have the time, energy, or desire to centralize those old photos, you can power up that old laptop and upload them, or dump them to an external hard drive and upload them in batches (all of your old 2003 trip photos at once, for example.) This way you're making continual progress without committing yourself to a week-long wrestling match with the tendrils of Google and Dropbox every time you want to back-up your memories.  When you're as far as you're going to get for the moment... tell us what you've found! Where to Look For Old Photos If you're like most people, you've probably stored your photos in all kinds of different places over the years. Here's a not-at-allcomprehensive-but-hopefully-inspirational list of places to look: Your phone's built-in photos app Your old phone's built-in photos app Photo apps on your laptop/PC Drive/ Desktop Folders on your laptop/PC  External harddrive CDs/DVDs USBs Old cameras Email Text messages (these can take up a surprising amount of space!)
