The rise of generative AI has impacted healthcare in many ways – one of which is that it's pushing Big Tech toward becoming not just a relevant, but a central player in the industry. And when we're talking Big Tech, we have to include Google. Google's activity in healthcare has been turbulent since it entered the space nearly two decades ago, but it's impossible to deny the significance of the contributions it's made to the industry. Now with the rapid growth of genAI, Google is refining its healthcare strategy to drive maximum impact in the areas it's best positioned to – places like consumer, therapeutics, diagnostics, and more. At the forefront of this work is Dr. Karen DeSalvo, Google's Chief Health Officer. This week, guest host Eric Larsen, President Emeritus of Advisory Board and President of Towerbrook Advisors sits down with Dr. DeSalvo to unpack the seemingly boundless opportunities of generative AI to evolve healthcare and the unique—and scoped—role Google is playing in helping advance that evolution. In this today's episode, Reuben and  Tessa are joined by Eric Larsen to discuss mold testing and inspection. They cover topics such as national standards and credentials for mold inspection, the importance of certifications, the different types of mold tests, and the limitations of mold testing. They also touch on the value of air sampling, surface sampling, viable spore sampling, and ATP testing. Overall, the conversation provides insights into the various methods and considerations involved in mold testing and inspection. In this conversation, Eric and Tessa discuss the interpretation of mold test results. They highlight that not all mold inspectors interpret the results, it is recommended to look at reference samples and consider the conditions in the room to determine if it is related to indoor mold. They also discuss the lack of federal or state guidelines for elevated mold levels and the variation in what is considered elevated based on individual circumstances. The most concerning types of mold mentioned are Stachybotrys, Ketotium, and the Aspergillus Penicillium grouping. Eric shares some interesting mold investigation stories, and they emphasize the importance of finding a qualified professional to diagnose and resolve mold issues.TakeawaysMold testing and inspection do not have national standards or required credentials, but certifications can provide credibility and expertise.Air sampling is a common and reliable method to determine mold exposure and can be used to compare indoor and outdoor air quality.Surface sampling can provide additional information about the types of mold present and can be useful for targeted remediation.Viable spore sampling and ATP testing are less common methods that offer a more detailed analysis of mold species and instant results, respectively.Mold testing has limitations, and it is important to consider other signs and indicators of mold issues when interpreting test results. Not all mold inspectors interpret the results of mold tests, but it is recommended to consider reference samples and the conditions in the room to determine if it is related to indoor mold. There are no federal or state guidelines for elevated mold levels, and what is considered elevated can vary based on individual circumstances. The most concerning types of mold are Stachybotrys, Ketotium, and the AspergillusPenicillium grouping. It is important to find a qualified professional to diagnose and resolve mold issues, and to be aware of potential conflicts of interest in the industry.Chapters00:00 Introduction and Background01:15 National Standards and Certifications08:13 The Importance of Certifications11:01 Quality and Variability in Mold Testing14:26 The Role of Lab Technicians22:30 Costs and Profit Margins in Mold Testing26:34 Surface Sampling and Interpretation30:37 Viable Spore Sampling and ATP Testing31:05 Interpreting Mold Test Results39:01 Understanding Elevated Mold Levels44:49 The Most Concerning Types of Mold48:20 Interesting Mold Investigation Stories53:38 Finding a Qualified Professional for Mold Issues

After a career of harrowing expeditions and a lifetime defined by doing things the hard way, Eric Larsen’s greatest challenge awaited him in 2021 in the form of a few words: a cancer diagnosis. Larsen’s ensuing battle with colorectal cancer — initially believed to be stage 4, then downgraded to 3.5 — was followed and reported by almost everyone across the outdoor industry (and beyond). The most unfiltered news came from Larsen himself, who penned candid, painfully honest updates on his progress on social media. But, in true polar-expedition style, Larsen relentlessly pushed forward, day by day, week by week. Today, his story isn’t just one of overcoming hardship; it’s a story of values gained. With a few tears and a lot of laughs — Larsen talks recovery, next adventures, “sexing up” the climate crisis (in a good way), and more! If you haven't got it on your phone already, where have you been?!   IRONMAN Arizona Pro Men A dominant winner at IRONMAN Wales and a career-best fifth at the IRONMAN World Championship suggests that Great Britain's Joe Skipper will arguably start as favourite, in what is a deep start list in Tempe. Big races in September, October and November might be considered sub-optimal for many, but based on history at least, there's little reason to believe that the Brit won't be physically and mentally ready to perform at his best, once again.   Looking back to 2019 for example, sixth in Kona was followed just over three weeks later by a fantastic victory at IRONMAN Florida, capped off with a 2:39 marathon. Success in back-to-back racing has proven to work for the six-time IRONMAN champion time after time. Even last year, he was totally dominant at IRONMAN Chattanooga, three weeks after second place IRONMAN Switzerland. He's seemingly at home racing in the U.S., too.   Joe Skipper 2022 photo credit IRONMAN Wales [Photo credit: IRONMAN Wales] The USA's Sam Long made plenty of headlines at the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship, but with that very contentious penalty on the bike, not the sort that he wanted. Winner in Gdynia, strong at the Collins Cup and a podium at the PTO US Open, the form is there – hopefully we'll get to see it on Sunday.   Sam Long St George photo credit Tom Pennington Getty Images for IRONMAN Sam Long at St George [Photo credit Tom Pennington/Getty Images for IRONMAN] The full-distance debut of Ben Kanute will be of particular interest, especially having turned around what was a mid-season of relatively under-whelming results by his standards. He put on a brilliant show at the IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship, taking a second silver medal at the championship. Strong across all disciplines, he should be at the front of the race for much of the day.   Ben Kanute 2nd at IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship 2022 Photo: Patrick McDermott/Getty Images for IRONMAN When you then add Matt Hanson, Chris Leiferman, Kristian Hogenhaug, Bart Aernouts, Justin Metzler and plenty more into the mix, then the way that racing has been going over the last few years, you have to think that the course record figures of Lionel Sanders (7:44:29 from 2016), will be under threat.   You can be sure that Great Britain's Andrew Horsfall-Turner will be pushing the pace in the water from the get-go – and with Kanute likely wanting to be a part of that too, that would benefit the man from Wales too.   Pro Women The USA's Skye Moench (#10) is the PTO's top-ranked female professional set to race in Tempe, a race where she has previously finished 11th (2016) and fourth (2018). Winner of three IRONMAN titles since then – and having finished fourth in St George, ninth in Kona this year – she will rightly start as favourite.   skye-moench-kona-2022-bike (Photo by Ezra Shaw/Getty Images for IRONMAN) Illness ruined her Kona prospects, but Sarah True still has the class to be a factor in Arizona. A winner this year at Eagleman 70.3 and IRONMAN Lake Placid, the two-time Olympian now juggles triathlon alongside being a mother and studying.   Entering Arizona with a, ‘one race, one win' history over the distance after her debut performance at IRONMAN Lanzarote, Great Britain's Lydia Dant has made rapid progress inside her first year in the Pro ranks. On the bike in particular – aided by her skills as a bike fitter – Lydia has excelled, and will be looking to make progress on that fast roads of the IRONMAN Arizona course towards the front of the race, once out of the water.   Lydia Dant - IRONMAN Lanzarote 2022 finish Photo Credit: James Mitchell for Club La Santa After finishing 10th (St George) and 12th (Kona), you can't write off the podium prospects of the consistent Maja Stage Nielsen (DEN) either. The Dane is really consistent across all three disciplines. Jen Annett (CAN) has taken second place this year at both IRONMAN Des Moines and IRONMAN Mont Tremblant, and so is another athlete sure to be chasing the podium positions in the late stages.   You can find the full start list here.   Recent IRONMAN Arizona Pro winners 2019: Sara Crowley (AUS) – Pro women only race 2018: Eneko Llanos (ESP) / Heather Jackson (USA) 2017: Lionel Sanders (CAN) / Kaisa Sali (FIN) 2016: Lionel Sanders (CAN) / Meredith Kessler (USA) 2015: Lionel Sanders (CAN) / Meredith Kessler (USA)   Prize Money: What's on the line? The prize purse on offer this weekend is $100,000 – with each of the winners collecting a $15,000 share of that total.   In addition to money, there will be a total of four qualifying slots (two MPRO* / two FPRO) for the IRONMAN World Championship in Hawaii, 12 and 14 October 2023. A valuable opportunity to get the KQ box ticked well in advance.   (* Note – Joe Skipper is already qualified by virtue of his victory at IRONMAN Wales).   The total funds will be paid ten-deep, as follows: $15,000 $9,000 $7,000 $5,000 $4,000 $3,000 $2,500 $2,000 $1,500 $1,000   Of course, thanks to the formation of the Professional Triathletes Organisation, financial rewards from performance are not solely from on-the-day performances, and this is one of the few 2022 races remaining to improve your ranking.   The PTO World Rankings will see a total of $2million awarded at the end of 2022, based up on the final standings in those points tables. The rewards there can be substantial, with a move up or down the rankings system potentially earning you more than any individual event.     Odyssey Alcatraz Swim this Saturday   Have you always wanted to swim from Alcatraz? Each swim is led by coaches and guides, and swim support is available on-hand to assist with exiting the water if needed.     2023 Alcatraz Swims: May 13, June 17, June 24, July 22, August 5, and November 4 Note: All swims are pending US Coast Guard approval. In the event that Coast Guard approval is not given for a swim, participants will be refunded in account credit.   Come join us for the ultimate Bay Area open water swim!   This event is not a race -- just a friendly swim in an exciting, safe, and comfortable environment. It is a great opportunity for those training for similar events, including the Escape from Alcatraz Triathlon, or people who just want an unforgettable, world-famous swimming experience!   The Alcatraz swim is an approximately 2-mile swim from Alcatraz Island to the St. Francis Yacht Club in San Francisco. We will occasionally swim to San Francisco's Ferry Building, which takes the swimmers east instead of west, but is comparable in terms of difficulty. Check the registration site for specific course info. Regardless of course, this swim is for relatively strong swimmers. Before taking on Alcatraz, you should be able to do this distance in a pool (140 lengths of a 25-yard pool) or during our regular group open water swims in Berkeley without stopping. Feel free to contact us if you're not sure if you are up for it.   Alcatraz swims are $245 per event. There is a $50 late registration fee within one month of the swim. In addition to the swim itself, registration includes an event t-shirt, an Alcatraz Swim sticker, and a yellow silicone Alcatraz swim cap.   All Alcatraz swims will take place in the morning, usually meeting in San Francisco between 5 and 8am. The registration page shows an approximate check-in time, but swimmers will receive an email prior to the event with finalized details.       What's New in the 303: Introducing Colorado's Ride - Bill   Invitation to TriDot Pre Season Project The Preseason Project® is a triathlon research initiative that helps TriDot quantify and enhance the performance gains that TriDot's Optimized Training™ delivers over training alternatives. During this journey, the duo pulled and paddled specially modified canoes across 550 miles of shifting sea ice and open ocean.   Eric successfully led his first expedition to the South Pole in 2008, covering nearly 600 miles in 41 days. Eric is now one of only a few Americans in to have skied to both the North and South Poles.   In November 2009, Eric returned to Antarctica for the first leg of his world record Save the Poles expedition. This time he completed a 750-mile ski traverse to the geographic South arriving on January 2, 2010.   Two short months later he was dropped off at northern Ellesmere Island for a winter-style North Pole Journey. The international team reached the North Pole 51 days later on Earth Day - April 22, 2010.   He completed the Save the Poles expedition by reaching the summit of Mt. Everest on October 15th, 2010 becoming the first person in history to reach the world's three 'poles' within a 365-day period.   In March 2014, Eric Larsen and Ryan Waters set out to traverse nearly 500 miles across the melting Arctic Ocean, unsupported, from Northern Ellesmere Island to the geographic North Pole. Despite being one of the most cold and hostile environments on the planet, the Arctic Ocean has seen a steady and significant reduction of sea ice over the past seven years due to climate change. Because of this, Larsen's and Waters' trip—dubbed the "Last North Expedition"—is expected to be the last human-powered trek to the North Pole, ever. Her vision and leadership led the development and implementation of USA Triathlon's most recent strategic plan – Elevate 2028 – that sets the path for the organization through the LA 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.   “I'm honored to lead USA Triathlon during such an important time, and I want to thank Joel, the USA Triathlon Board of Directors and members of the hiring committee for the opportunity,” Brumfield said. “Multisport is transformative, unifying and empowering, and I am proud and ready to wake up every morning and bring this sport and community to more people. I look forward to working closely with our constituents and team to continue to spread the virtues of our sport far and wide, serve our community in a way that enables everyone to prosper, build on the development programs for youth and junior athletes, and celebrate our sport and community every day.”   A trailblazer and advocate throughout her career, Brumfield was hired as the first female member of the USA Triathlon's Executive Leadership Team. Brumfield's leadership has elevated and empowered female leaders within the organization at every level of the organization. Additionally, Brumfield has been a staunch proponent of diversity, equality, inclusion and access (DEIA) during her time at USA Triathlon and worked to make DEIA a focal point of the organization's long-term strategic plan, annual priorities and hiring processes, among other areas.   Brumfield has helped transform USA Triathlon's approach to service and the constituents it serves, most notably race directors, clubs, coaches, officials and age-group athletes. She has instilled a focus on building meaningful relationships with community members across the United States and emphasized the need for both resource development and initiatives and programs that drive value at the grassroots level.   Prior to her appointment as interim CEO Brumfield most recently served as USA Triathlon's Chief of Staff and Chief Business Development Officer. She led the turnaround of USA Triathlon from a transactional entity to an organization celebrated for its service leadership by fostering a culture of collaboration both internally and externally. With a people-first approach, Brumfield helped USA Triathlon earn best-place-to-work recognition by Front Office Sports, Outside Magazine, and Colorado Springs Gazette.   In 2020 Brumfield was named the Chief Business Development Officer, in addition to her Chief of Staff role, and led business development and partnerships. Under her leadership,U USA Triathlon led unprecedented commercial growth and strategic partnerships, even while navigating the Covid-19 pandemic.   In her role as Chief of Staff, Brumfield was responsible for directing strategic planning, managing and streamlining the organization's operational plan, and overseeing cross-functional projects with large-scale organizational impact. She also directly oversaw business administration including human resources, finance, and information technology (IT), for three years.   Brumfield currently serves on the World Triathlon Audit Committee and was a member of the SportsBusiness Journal “Game Changers: Women in Sports Business” 2020 Class.   Prior to USA Triathlon, Brumfield worked in the endurance sports industry for nearly 20 years across a number of roles that gave her both a broad understanding of the business of the sport and the opportunity to grow and inspire triathlon communities at the local level. Most recently, she was a founding member of the Virgin Sport start-up in Sir Richard Branson's global Virgin Group. Before Virgin, Victoria's roots were deeply embedded in triathlon as the former Event Director for the New York City Triathlon, IRONMAN US Championship, 2003 ITU World Cup in New York City, 2005 ITU Age Group World Championships in Hawaii, and 2004 USA Olympic trials for Triathlon, among others.   Brumfield is a passionate amateur short and long-distance triathlete and endurance athlete. She studied finance and earned a Master of Business Administration from the NYU Stern School Of Business. She currently resides in Colorado Springs, Colo.   You Get What You Give, Ask Primal Why By Bill Plock Nov 6, 2022–Denver  In 1998, The New Radicals released the song, “You Get What You Give” and it seems to have resonated strongly as a business mantra with premier cycling apparel manufacturer Primal of Denver.   As I looked around the room at the Four Seasons conference room during the PrimalBike 2022 gathering a couple of weeks ago, it dawned on me that between all of the rides represented here, well over $150 million is raised each and every year for a variety of causes; cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, college scholarships, community causes and so much more.   Between the rides, tens of thousands of riders explore roads in every corner of America. The reason they were all in Denver? Primal, a thirty-year-old company supplies cycling clothing for all of these rides and the cyclists who spend hours raising money and a lifetime rolling on roads.   Thirty years ago, Dave Edwards made some cool cycling t-shirts and sold them out of the back of his car in Moab. They were a hit and one thing has led to another and thousands upon thousands of designs later Primal has evolved into one of cycling's top brands of cycling wear.   Each year, Primal invites some of their top customers to meet and discuss the “state of the union” in cycling events and ponder the future, and share ideas on how to improve events and the sport of cycling. This year's attendee's included leaders from MS, RAGBRAI, Bike New York, Pan-Mass Challenge, Outside, and many others. All of the organizations attending, some for-profit and most non-profits, raise enormous money, but so does Primal.   Since its inception, Primal has given away over 12 million dollars. Says founder, President/CEO Dave Edwards about the gathering, “the most meaningful part is making connections and sharing knowledge and experiences. We're privileged to work with incredible partners, and we wanted to provide an opportunity for them to get together in a setting that inspires learning, conversations, and relationship building that makes their events even better while getting more people on bikes.”   The Pan-Mass Challenge, in particular, raising $63million in one ride for cancer research leads the peloton of charity. Said President, Jarrett Collins, “Primal is a great partner for the Pan-Mass Challenge because they support many of our teams with high-quality kits, AND they give back to the fundraising efforts of those teams, all in the service of defeating cancer!”   The group had break-out sessions focused on discussing a variety of topics ranging from sustainability to trends such as gravel, or as Jarrett Collins termed, “unpaved”. Steve Schulz from Cycle Oregon gave us a peek behind the curtains of their Community of Giving (COG) program and the impact their ride has on its communities and how it helps build everything from community centers to improving community relationships.   The group took to the streets and rode bikes to further build camaraderie and consider ideas aimed at getting more people on bikes and raising more money.   Ken Podziba, President of Bike New York holds the largest one-day ride in the United States, the Five Boro Bike Tour with over 32,000 riders (303 articles about the ride HERE) and said of the conference, “the conference, which was interesting, engaging, informative, and entertaining, provided an opportunity to learn from and collaborate with some of our country's top bike event organizers.  I left Denver with a much greater knowledge of Primal's creative and managerial processes, learning things we can apply to our events, and making some awesome new friends – now that's a successful conference!”   If you measure yourself by the peers you attract, Primal has attracted many of the best of the best when it comes to top cycling events and raising money for good causes. You Get What You Give seemed more than obvious at PrimalBike 2022.   Aspen unicyclist left his mark on famed Iron Horse Bicycle Classic It's only fitting that Aspen's Mike “Pinto” Tierney is going out “No. 1” in the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic.   Not “No. 1” as in the fastest in the famed race and recreational ride between Durango and Silverton. Nor did he log the most years riding in the event, which celebrated its 50th anniversary this year on Memorial Day Weekend.   Instead, he is the guy who has turned heads for tackling the grueling 47-mile ride over two mountain passes exceeding 10,000 feet on one wheel.   In Aspen, Tierney is famed for working 40 years on the exalted Aspen Highlands Ski Patrol and for regularly riding his unicycle up Independence Pass and Maroon and Castle Creek roads — and even on a variety of mountain bike trails in the Roaring Fork Valley.   In Durango and Silverton, he's known as the crazy dude who rides a one-wheeled cycle with no brakes up and down some of the most challenging passes in Colorado.   “A 63-year-old unicycling 50 miles from Durango to Silverton sounds a little crazy. I don't mind being called crazy,” Tierney said.   This year's event was his eighth and final Iron Horse. “I was the only unicyclist to do it, ever,” he said. Others started, none finished. He heard of a unicyclist from Cortez who rode the route, just not during the Iron Horse.   Unicycles weren't allowed in the event prior to 2005. Rules changed and Tierney jumped at the opportunity — and promptly got humbled. Six unis started. The other riders dropped out along the route. Tierney started with the two-wheeled riders and was quickly left in the dust. One restaurant hung a sign on the door saying, “Free food to Lance Armstrong and any unicyclist that finishes.” By the time Tierney finished, the restaurant was closed for the day because all riders had long since finished.   He changed strategy the next time he rode it in 2015. He started an hour early and got the flats north of Durango out of the way. In that and subsequent years, he got used to the racers sweeping by him on lower Coal Bank Pass, then the recreational riders catching him higher up the major ascent. He completes the ride between 6 and 6.5 hours.   It's not about finishing fast. It's about finishing on one wheel. Other cyclists marvel at how he can tackle the steep ascents and hair-raising downhills on a cycle with one speed and no brake. He rides a 36-inch wheel. He grinds up with 170mm crank arms and swaps them out to 140mm for the downhills.   Over the 45 years since he started riding a unicycle, he's learned to seek the slow cadence of pedal strokes on the downhill. If he cannot maintain it and gets going too quickly, he's got to jump off. He's never had to do it in his eight Iron Horses. While bicycle riders get to coast on the downhills, Tierney still has to work.   For Tierney, it was particularly humbling to get accolades in a couple of notable celebrations of the Iron Horse's 50th anniversary. There is a section about him in a book marking the anniversary, “Fiftieth Anniversary, Looking Back Racing Forward” by John Peel. His accomplishments also are included in a special exhibit at Fort Lewis College's Center of Southwest Studies. The exhibit, “Looking Back, Racing Ahead: 50 Years of the Iron Horse Bicycle Classic and Durango Cycling Culture,” is on display until spring 2023.     Invitation to TriDot Pre Season Project The Preseason Project® is a triathlon research initiative that helps TriDot quantify and enhance the performance gains that TriDot's Optimized Training™ delivers over training alternatives. In 1991 seven of the greatest comic artists had an idea. The idea was to jump ship from the big 2 comic books companies in the world Marvel Comics and DC. They had contributed some of the greatest comic book art in the history of comics. These men grew tired however of giving their work to someone else. They wanted to be their own boss - they wanted to create characters that were their own. They had a vision - an Image if you will. Todd McFarlane, Rob Liefeld, Jim Lee, Marc Silvestri, Eric Larsen, Jimmy Valentino, and Whilce Portacio. Together these men founded Image Comics and the world of comics would never be the same again. From creations like Spawn, Youngblood, WildC.A.T.S, Savage Dragon all the way to The Walking Dead and Invincible. They have left a mark on the industry that has endured for 30 years. Tonight we want to talk about their rockstar journey which is certainly worthy of movie treatment! For centuries, the ends of the Earth have captivated and courted the world's bravest characters. The highest peaks of the Himalayas, the furthest depths of the oceans, and the poles, frozen pinpoints on opposite ends of the globe that still serve as two of the most ambitious destinations for a certain type of person you may have thought died out years ago: The explorers. Eric Larsen is one of those people, a veteran explorer who has not only reached both the geographic north and south poles, but also summited Mount Everest. And in 2009 and 2010 he became the first person in the world to reach all three in the span of 365 days, an endeavor that cemented him as one of the most successful American explorers in recent years. On this replay of his Paternal episode from 2018,  Larsen discusses the conflict of being a leading-edge American explorer and an engaged father at the same time, and how he and his wife have worked on the unique elements of their relationship. The enormous disruptions in healthcare caused by the pandemic have given Eric Larsen plenty of occasions to recall some wisdom he once heard from a pastor: “In times of volatility and upheaval, learning has to be greater than or equal to the rate of change.” So that’s one reason why as president of the Advisory Board, Larsen spends about 25 hours per week studying changes in the healthcare system. Its incredible complexity is one reason the Advisory Board has long been valued by healthcare leaders as a disseminator of deeply-researched best practices. An alliance with Optum forged in 2017 is providing opportunities to be more involved in actually enabling change, something which Larsen says has been energizing. One of his roles is to regularly advise CEO’s of the 100 largest systems in the country who control a huge swath of the $1.3 trillion sector. “We try to be at the epicenter of all of this dynamic energy in healthcare to understand where the innovation is happening, where the disruptions are emerging and how do we understand them and harness them,” he says. Check out this penetrating discussion with host Rishi Desai to get a view into what structural shifts are underway, and what kind of support providers need to become more efficient and patient-centered.

这期节目主播和Richard介绍我们是如何为一个面积很有限的小书店选书的。这期节目依然适用慢速、简单英文录制,下面是我们的录音稿文字,是通过 otter.ai 整理,希望对大家有所帮助。Yifan Did you listen to the last episode, your first podcast? Richard Once I could bet to hear myself recorded?Yifan How many times?Richard Once? All right, did you show this to your parents? Nope. Your girlfriend? Nobody? I don't think, Oh, actually, no, my girlfriend sent the culture potato podcast link to one of her friends. Just to tell him about, oh, we're doing this bookshop and I'm doing you know, we're doing this bookshop together. And this is a guy who's like, an I was obsessed, well obsessed with all sorts of things. But when she knew him, when the window in the living together, he was obsessed with learning Mandarin. So she said, Oh, here's a podcast for you. It's Richard's friends podcast. And then she probably said the list and maybe further down he saw, you might have seen because you did two more episodes to three more episodes since. So he might have noticed that one. Okay, I don't know if he went there.Yifan Okay, so this week, we want to talk about our book choices, you know, as a bookshop, how we choose books. But before we get into all that, can you talk about perhaps the most memorable book you read in 2020? Well, the book I've chosen for this is probably it will be crashed by Adam Tooze, which is a book about the financial crisis of 2008. And it actually came out in 2018, as a 10 year anniversary, but I finally read it during lockdown. He's a professor of financial history. So there's a lot of data, a lot of material, yet it reads like a thriller. So it's heading to a Netflix.Yeah, it could, it could head to Netflix. But I'm thinking it also, didn't you read? too big to fail? Yes, I did. When it came out, and maybe it's like that as well. Although, because then that isn't that supposed to be super readable and reads like a thriller and so forth? and Netflix material, potentially?Yeah. Is that that's even HBO material? I would say.Yeah. So yeah, that probably finally getting around to reading that, from one year from one economic crisis to a health crisis. And what is the conclusion? Has anything changed? In the 10 years? Since?I'm not sure, really, there's a bit of optimism, but I wouldn't hold my breath.Okay. But personally, in the last 10 years, you know, one of the big actors in the 2008 financial crisis is Jamie Dimon of JPMorgan. And over the last 10 odd years, I have seen a big transformation in his attitude and to a certain extent, reputation. He has embraced at least superficially. A lot of the new ideas that's that was fermenting in the business world. Yeah. The moving away from maximising shareholder value to to more of a socialist outlook, to the extent that it is possible that, you know, the care for society for employees. I don't know, does the book talk about this?Richard No, no, no, no, not not really less of a thing.Yifan So even if England is still in full lockdown mode, however, in the background, we are busying you know, compiling lists of books who are going to order and to to fill our shelves. So as the general manager, Richard, can you talk about how you are approaching this, how we are picking our books and how we are presenting it to them to our customers?Richard Sure, looking at the fact that we're somewhat constricted by space, and we obviously can't stock every single book that's out there and buy every single genre, like you would in a big bookshop with obviously selecting what we like, but also books that people think are relevant, whether they're classic works of literature, or authoritative works of nonfiction. And some of these recommendations, we're also taking from what we've read in reviews or whether it's from people discussing books in science. on social media, or on podcasts, or even books that public figures recommend.Yifan So in a way we are mimicking, or were thinking about how most general readers would come across a book, they might have read it in the newspaper or through word of mouth, or, you know, their favourite YouTubers talking about it. That's the that's the idea.Richard Yeah. And maybe with a certain emphasis on various influences, who recommend books, whether again, the, their newspapers, or, you know, traditional book reviewers, like the London Review of Books, or the times literary supplement, to YouTubers who review books, or public figures, you publish lists of books, and so forth.Yifan Cool. I imagine we might even organise our bookshelves according to these influencers who recommend the books. And I know that for this week's programme you have prepared, for example, book lists that you know, that's right, wait, we are working on? Can you briefly introduce the four book lists?Richard So we got two lists by public figures, probably none of them need much introduction. One is Bill Gates, the formerly richest man in the world. The other one is Barack Obama, formerly the American president, who periodically published their lists of books that they've recently read, as it was the end of 2020. They both did a round up and published the list of books for Christmas. So those are those two lists, and then rather differently, we're going to talk about a radio programme start the week, which is a key radio programme or podcast from the BBC, that talks about books or that talks to people who have written books, and introduces the subject matter. And then one final list will be by a YouTuber, who presents and reviews, various works of fiction, which could be considered classics, 20th century classics or even, you know, even cult classic books.Yifan What's the name of this YouTuber?Richard So yeah, his name is so his YouTube channel is better than food. And he's a man named Clifford Lee Sargent. And he lives he seems to periodically move about America. I think the latest count us in Portland, Oregon.Yifan Yeah, so let's dive into the these four very different and hopefully interesting book lists to give our audience that flavour. Let's start with Bill Gates, Bill Gates. I imagine he would. He's a tech guy. And he's, since he left Microsoft. He's running a globally powerful foundation. He's also at the centre of some of the of the most topical conspiracy theories around.Richard Yeah,Yifan it's it's no laughing matter. But what kind of books has Bill Gates chosen? In 2020?Richard Yeah, sure. So he's got five books. They're all nonfiction, all on different topics. But one you could say is, is somewhat related to Black Lives Matter. It's called The New Jim Crow: Mass incarceration in the age of colorblindness by Michelle Alexander. Jim Crow being the the laws the racial segregation laws that used to apply in the American deep south. Another title is range why generalists triumph in a specialised world by David Epstein. Then we got the splendid and the vile, a saga of Churchill family and defiance during the Blitz by Eric Larson, the spy in the traitor, the greatest espionage story of the Cold War by Ben MacIntyre. And then finally, we have breath from salt, a deadly genetic disease, a new era in science and the patients and families who changed medicine by bcl two ready. So these are the five books. So one of them the splendid and the vile of saga of Churchill family and defiance during the Blitz by Eric Larsen, which is set up in 1940s 1942. When London and other cities in Britain were bombed by the German Air Force. I think he ties this into sort of how people experience the Blitz. In a kind of parallel way to how people are experiencing lockdown due to COVID. You know, as he says the the fear and the anxiety they felt, even if probably the Blitz was a lot more frightening than even COVID. Now we got the book about generalists range where generalists triumph in a specialised world, where he argues companies do better off employing people who have more breadth than people, then having too many people focused on a very narrow subject. For instance, I think Roger Federer seems to be the the author's a big example of how he started playing several sports before really becoming a big tennis star. Breath from Salt at a deadly genetic disease, a new era in science and the patients and families who changed medicine. Sorry, the subject matter of this book is a pet project of his in that it's about research into cystic fibrosis, which is something he's been involved in a message of hope, I suppose. Is there any would appeal to you?Yifan Not really, no. Not at all, perhaps the Ben MacIntyre book on the spy and the traitor but in a way I would, I would just Google and Wikipedia, you know, the spies name, and read all about it. You know, but one interesting I would say is, I think Bill Gates is a massively respected figure in the tech world and beyond. And he's someone a nerd, turned humanitarian. And sometimes we imagine nerds or people in Silicon Valley to be reading about coding about big trends in the industry. And right, yeah, or about future, right, like about gurus books about the future. But I think really the best minds in tech, like the best minds in business, they really have a very wide range of appetites in, in their reading, and I think this list illustrates that quite well. Yeah. Especially if he's in the business of giving money out to, to solve the world's problems. He needs to understand the world's problems and the context in which they arise. And the underlying mechanisms or just to understand the world better and deeper. And I think this Yeah, I would say it's a it's a good list. Personally. It's not my interest for lockdown reading. Yeah. But but then let's move to a somewhat perhaps different it's a very different person, you know, by no means a nerd. So it's President Obama. What What has he been reading?Maybe first thing we should say about Obama is that he's now he's got his new book out, which is done very well. And he sees himself as very much a man of a man of letters, somebody who'd like you. He likes his books he's seriously into he's always been into reading a thoughtful person, perhaps a thoughtful person. Yeah. And he looked at his list, we won't go through the whole thing. There are many more titles than Bill Gates. 15, let's say, a mix of fiction and nonfiction. A lot of them I'd say, probably very, for an American president, very American centric, a lot to do the American experience whether it's fictionalised or, or not. So there's a Chinese American perspective story. There's, you know, South Asian American, there's obviously an afro American, that kind of drive. Otherwise, there are more say, more straight non fiction in to do again, with this one. It looks interesting cast, the origins of our discontents. But Isabel Wilkinson Wilkerson's right, where she contracts a sort of social and Rachel describes the social and racial system in America and includes it or uses the caste system in India, as well as Nazi Germany to describe Yeah, sociological and racial differences in America. There's even a debut on here. Fiction Again, I think it's a lustre by Raven leahlani, which I think is add some, some good reviews some high praise about a young Afro American woman in New York again in the midst of all that's going on at the moment, politically. Yeah, there's also a thing about Latino or Latin x Americans. And this is a work of nonfiction as somebody who's surveyed undocumented Americans, which is the title of the book, the undocumented Americans by capital up codenamed Villa a few cents you. Aside from that there's also a book about the twilight of democracy, the failure of politics and the parting of friends by Anna Applebaum.I have this book, Anne Applebaum.Maybe I miss wrote it. I don't know. We can double check that, because she's the famous author wrote about the gulags in Russia. Yeah. And she's like the only conservative columnist in the New York Times for a while I think. All right. I want to pick out something that you mentioned what people call in quotation mark the American experience. Yeah. You know, it's about, for example, they C Pam Zhang, how much of these hills is gold? I know that she's a, she's an immigrant. She's part of an immigrant family from Beijing. But this is a fiction. I think it goes back in history. It's about how a Chinese family during during the Gold Rush, right. That's right. And there are, as you say, that the undocumented Americans. So it's about searching for a better life dealing with the inequalities in America, and about pursuing the American dream, I suppose. Yeah. Considering Obama's political background, and racial background. I'm not criticising Bill Gates. Bill Gates, doesn't talk about maybe these issues are too controversial. I don't know.Richard Yeah. What do you have the Michelle Alexander book, and I suppose what I mean, Obama, the other hand doesn't have much science or anything to, you know, in that in that kind of realm. He's also got this the splendid and the vile, the saga of church or family in defiance stream, the Blitz by Erik Larson. So Bill Gates and Obama cross over on that book. Yeah. What was I gonna say? Oh, yeah, there's one book which is set in Hawaii. Right. Yeah. which follows his book about his own upbringing there. And that is sharks in the time of saviours by kawhi and kawhi. Strong Washburn? interesting name. Yeah. kawhi. Sounds like my idea of somebody from Hawaii, but I don't know. Right?Yifan Not Japan. Okay.Richard Well, yeah, exactly. I'm not sure what else to add, it seems like, you know, a very sort of American presidents list, sort of. Except Now, having said that thinking if Trump Look, look, look nothing like this.Yifan I think Trump is reading legal defence for Dummies. How to appeal this court. Anyway. Let's move on. You prepared another two lists that's coming from the podcast, YouTube. Universe, can you shall we start with start the week the you mentioned, it's a BBC programme. Can you talk about what kind of podcasts This is?Richard Yes, so this is probably a key per gramme for books on the BBC. I mean, it's every Monday at 9am in the morning, after they've done the whole breakfast news kind of show, hence, it's called start the week. And it's used to be presented by Andrew Marr, and now he rotates with other presenters. He's a journalist himself, and he picks every week. A number of guests who talk about a subject matter or they talk about different subjects matters. And often, most of that, not always, but often they've written a book, which ties in to the subject under discussion. A lot of the time he has academics and journalists, so we're looking at more nonfiction. However, occasionally, he also has fiction writers. Probably the you know, the biggest names that you recently had down Hutch link and Margaret AtwoodYifan giving us a weekly programme. So you know, their list is quite long. So even for 2020 we may have dozens of books can you pick out a few that that are quite representative of the kind of issues the programme is interested in? And yeah, I would just add that Andrew Marr made and honourable appearance on cultural potato in our episode talking about a Maoism that was a paid for programme unpacked Maoist Maoism, a global history in that episode, when Andrew Marr was a student, he was a committed communist fanatic. And he wrote during the Cultural Revolution to the Chinese Embassy in London requesting a free case of Mao's little red books to share with his fellow students. Anyway, so yeah, give us some notable books.Richard Yeah, yeah, he, for instance, he had a book where they talked about sort of farming and what can we say country? Well, country nature? Yeah, really. And one of the books on there was a book called entangled life by Merlin Sheldrake, and this is about funghi. This band was just talking about the mushrooms, mushrooms, different mushrooms, and what they can teach us. Something else we've had, so maybe more in conjunction with black lives matter. He had the biography of a Haitian revolutionary of the 19th century. Black Spartacus, the life of Toussaint l'ouverture by Sudhir Hazara Singh, and in conversation with olivette hotelli, who's written a book called Africans, Europeans, an untold history. Yifan Interesting I see on the on the list, there's a title called China's good war by Rhino jmeter. What which war is this about? Richard Rana Mitter previously wrote about the second world war again in the Second World War.Yifan Oh, I think I know. Yes, yes. This is about how the West often forgets about ChinaRichard Ok yeah that's it. China in the global order? That wasYifan Yeah. So it seems that this and I see that there's a new translation of the Aeneid. It's in a way quite a European or British list that you know, it is a title called English pastoral that that's the farming book about mushroom. about these, you know, like gardening, artful farming. There's a book is it is there a book by Hitler? And even you know, classic study is like a very British thing as well. Yeah. So start the week strikes me as compared to the other two are definitely more UK. Not I wouldn't say UK centric. But definitely the taste isRichard definitely more so than Barack Obama. Yeah, most definitely. You could say yeah, this is what sort of thinking people or you know, educated people in in Britain might be likely to read is a is going to be on here. Yeah,Yifan let's go to the last list. This is a YouTuber you mentioned called better than food to the channel isRichard the channel is better than food. And by as he says his host, Clifford, US hosts Clifford Lee Sargent. So this I came to having read, I'd been actually somebody had told me sort of a while back George Bataille story of the eye, which I don't know if you've read it.Yifan No, I have not read any of his booksRichard It's very short. When it came out. It was probably a shocking story. shocking thing to write. I found it very intriguing. And I wanted to find out more. And somehow ended up on YouTube and came across this person talking about how he wanted to adapt it into the film, which I thought was completely crazy was bonkers. I don't think you're anywhere with that. But essentially, I found then found his channel. He at least talked about story of the eye and gave me his insights, which I thought were interesting. His premise is that, you know, in our lifetime, how many books is one going to read especially if you just stick to fiction and so He has this measure. Is the book better than food? Oh, I see. Right see one needs food to survive. Yeah. So, so the measure is is the book better than food? So at the end, he might say better than food? Or he might just say better than food? I don't think so. Some of the titles or merps may be more obscured so some of the titles or maybe famous famous either forgotten books or bit more forgotten or not necessarily known in the English speaking world because that's another thing he has for somebody, let's say is an English speaker is all these got a lot of a lot of books on that that are in that he's reading in translation in English. And that's unusual, because you know, the English speaking book world can be quite narrow minded. Always, always think about, you know, when they announced the Nobel Prize for Literature, usually nobody nobody in this country's heard of who who the winner is. Yes, and so I think a lot of these books are kind of you could say 20th century classics maybe some of them you could say a cult classics sort of book that not not necessarily like there's sort of liked by you know people in in the know as it were.Yifan Can you give us some examples of these cult classics?Richard But you even the George Bataille story I'd say is a good you know, is what is the story about? I think that's a that's another podcast entirely. Let's not go there. In a way you could say the story of the I two best thing to sum it up. I was thinking about it just now. You could say it's like a book form of a Salvador Dali painting. And even you know, you think of like, what's that film? He made? The slicing slicing eyeballs?un chien andalouYeah, un chien andalou. Y eah, it ties into that whole kind of milleu. And. Bataille was first part of those surrealistsYifan strange and disgusting Richard Yeah, strange and disgusting. Yeah. Yeah, I mean, the things that probably the obvious ones would be things like jack Kerouac on the road. What's it? Blood meridian is Yeah, there's a few Mishima Confessions of a mask. Fight Club. Chuck Palahniuk, they'll probably be like, at least a you know, a recent cult book,Yifan which one was that sorry?Richard Fight Club Palahniuk, which was turned into that film in what in the late 90s. So a lot of these books as well, they link so he might see a lot more lashonda Moldova, which might? Again, you'd say that cult in the sense that a lot. That's a book that inspired a lot of people on the list, like, say, George Bataille. Yeah, like the most of the surrealists, but might not necessarily be known if you hadn't read these authors or knew much about the surrealist writers. And so he kind of goes up, he goes up the kind of what's it called? The sort of family tree of literature in a way.Yifan Andyeah, I'm just thinking about from, like, you know, when we have his collection in the bookshop, like, Who are they for? And could you say that his list is a pretentious list?Yeah, maybe you could say it's a bit pretentious. I think the pretention here is really to just, yeah, to try and read things that actually matter, or they're gonna leave an impression on you. Yeah. And again, they're also the colour aspect is important. Because also, you know, if you want to be part of, you know, of a club as it were of a colorist, and you know, know, what, certain people what books certain people have read, you know, this is a way of, yeah, getting in there. Yeah, I don't know how to sort of explain but meet perhaps the sort of people who are, there are tea because, you know, like, artists who is I like to reference, like, Great authors, or even more obscure authors like this, you know, there's a certain kind of cachet about like, referencing very, very obscure and niche artists of all sorts, whether they're writers or others.Yeah, and I would say, you know, this list is isn't arty list potential slash artists in a good way. In that these are authors who are trying who in you know, in their time, they were trying to do new things, andyou're trying to experimentalYeah, they're not in one way or another. Right, a popular novel. I think none of these were We're written thinking, that's write a book to make money.Richard Exactly. I mean, some of these writers remain pretty obscure.Yifan So that concludes our four lists as examples of, of how we how we pick our books. And the very last item before the end of the programme is, you know, like Word of, is a good word of the month or just to introduce a fun English word to our listeners. Well,I just used five minutes ago, is the word bonkers, right? essentially means crazy. And it's speltB o n k e r s.Richard There we are. If something's bonkers. It's crazy. It boggles the mind. Yifan And is that the same as bananas? No. Richard That's true. Yeah. Bananas. It's completely bananas.Yeah. Yeah.Yifan Okay. Two words. bountiful. And bananas. It's bananas. exactly the same as, as the bananas that you eat. I don't know. Why do people think bananas are crazy?Richard They usually say going bananas, don't you?Yifan Yeah. Why is that? I wonder? Maybe we should find out. Bananas are bonkers. Okay. All righty. That's another interesting word. All righty. All righty. This is the second programme talking about book lists in Hoxton books. Our bookshop is still not open yet. thanks for bearing with us.Thank you.Okay, Cheers.Bye.Transcribed by https://otter.ai See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Eric Larsen is a polar explorer, speaker, and expedition guide. He has spent the past 15 years of his life traveling to some of the most remote and wild places left on earth. In 2006, Eric completed the first-ever summer expedition to the North Pole. Eric is now one of only a few Americans to have skied to both the North and South Poles. Eric is passionate about spreading the message about the beauty & importance of the poles and other Arctic places - places that few people will ever get to see. Eric and I discussed: What's more difficult, Everest or the North Pole? Polar Bears How he mentally handles the cold The beauty of the ice Breaking a mission into smaller mini-missions The difficulties of putting an expedition together His positive mindset His surprise stalker And much, much more... Eric Larsen Eric's Instagram My Take: It is important that someone like Eric explores these places and tells their stories. These mostly uninhabited (and freezing) places across our planet are some of the most beautiful - and in need of the most preservation. Joe Ranft was one of the most prolific storytellers in the Pixar canon. Working at first for Eric Larsen at Disney, working on Lion King and Beauty and the Beast among others, then moving over to work with Jon Lassiter at Pixar as the head of the story dept - Joe was responsible for the story's and characters in Toy Story, Bugs Life, Cars and others.Unfortunately a car accident took his life in 1995. He left behind his family, and brother who works in the industry.  Having seen the film "Soul" and realizing how much of a documentary it is - meaning that a number of the story points are also story points in the "Flipside" research I've been doing for over a decade (the Great Beginning, classrooms of newly formed souls, guides and teachers who watch over them, how a person comes from there to hear - how we choose our journeys in advance based on the lessons we need to or want to learn, etc) I thought for our New Year's podcast Joe would be an ideal candidate. He has messages for his family and friends, including Jon Lassiter, including Pete Docter, co writer and director of Soul.  For those who don't know who he is, they should know him - he's one of the "mentors" for 22 in the film "Soul" that's posted on the wall her list of mentors she's "defeated."  The name of the main character appears to be named after Joe - and from their review (the flipside review of the film) they loved it. They said "It was more accurate than you think" as well as giving it a 98% accuracy for "how to explain it to people on the planet. (however, pointing out that once one is on the flipside, it's about 15% accurate in terms of that more vast experience.)  You want to talk to the flipside? Anyone can, and this is just one of the 42 examples from this year. Happy New Year.
