This week we continue our series of Jarvis Leatherby interviews with musicians who are friends, peers, influences and/or tourmates of Night Demon. The next interviewee is Christopher Williams, longtime drummer for Accept, who first crossed paths with Night Demon on a European tour in winter 2018. In this far-reaching, in-depth interview, you will hear how Christopher became obsessed with the drums at a very early age, how an uncle changed his life, and how he made the trek from Greenville, SC to Nashville, TN to pursue his dreams of becoming a professional musician. There are many funny, but also poignant, anecdotes of the sacrifices he made, the hardships he encountered, and the ups and downs of trying to establish himself in the music business.Become a subscriber today at nightdemon.net/subscriber. Greg kicks things off this week with a recap of the The Loman Brothers show at Bossa Bistro this past weekend in a 'Tales from the Concert.' Jay and Nick were in attendance and share their thoughts. If you missed it, it was an incredible show, but you can watch a solid recap of the performance over on Sandi Redman's YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=knKHDXUYzvESong: The Loman Brothers - “Actual Proof” (Herbie Hancock)Jay watched the Yacht Rock Doc that Greg covered last week and he loved it. YouTube perrsonality, multi-instrumentalist and music educator Rick Beato watch it too, and he hated it. Jay takes us down to Hot Topical to discuss.Song: Sam Fender - “People Watching”The Drummers of Frank Zappa was a special released on Drum Channel over 16 years ago, but it's new to Nick! He recaps the conversations had by Terry Bozzio, Chad Wackerman, Chester Thompson, Ralph Humphrey and Ruth Underwood about their time playing with the legendary composer. You can watch it too on Drum Channel's YouTube channel https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ruB1JplOmTwSong: Frank Zappa - “RDNZL” (from You Can't Do That On Stage Anymore, Vol 2)
It is a little surprising that we have gotten this far into the podcast without featuring an album by Mötley Crüe. This is a group that practically defined the hair metal genre of the mid to late-80's. The band formed in 1981 in Hollywood, and featured both a party-oriented lifestyle and an androgynous look. The core and classic members of the band were Nikki Sixx on bass and keyboards, Mick Mars on lead guitar and backing vocals, Tommy Lee on drums and backing vocals, and Vince Neil as front man. Many other musicians would be brought in for sessions, and the group itself would change personnel over the years. However, the classic lineup was still in place for their fifth studio album, Dr. Feelgood. At the time, the group was facing conflicts that caused Producer Bob Rock to have each member record their parts separately. This was also the first album recorded after the group started a quest to get sober and go through rehab. Additionally, recording took place in Vancouver, getting the band out of the familiar (and seductive) L.A. scene. The result of these sessions was impressive. Dr. Feelgood was the groups most successful album to date, and went to the top of the Billboard 200 album chart, the only Crüe album to do so. It was also reviewed positively by critics, receiving the award for "Best Hard Rock/Heavy Metal Album of the Year" at the American Music Awards in 1991.Friend of the show Greg Lyon sits in for Bruce and brings us this excellent glam metal album of the late 80's for this week's podcast.Dr. FeelgoodThis title track peaked at number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it Mötley Crüe's most successful single to date. The song about a drug dealer chronicles the connection between LA Rock and drug use. It has an infectious funky riff and a more sophisticated production which departs from earlier Mötley Crüe efforts.Don't Go Away Mad (Just Go Away)The softer approach of this power ballad song are betrayed by its adolescent lyrics. Bassist Nikki Sixx was inspired by a movie line to make this sarcastic song. It's tongue in cheek lyrics and reference to earlier Crüe songs make it a favorite at their live shows. like fire, don't you ever take my name in vain."Same Ol' Situation (S.O.S.)This fifth single released from the album tells a comedic story of a boy meeting two girls, and by the end of the song the boy has been passed over while the two girls end up together. Many of Mötley Crüe's songs had lighter, humorous lyrics, which contributed to their appeal.Kickstart My HeartDo not play this song when driving through a speed trap! The song is not about a relationship, but about Nikki Sixx's heroin overdose. Sixx was clinically dead, requiring the paramedic to inject adrenaline into his heart to get it beating again. This single reached number 27 on the Billboard Hot 100. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Welcome Home by Willie Nelson (from the motion picture “Welcome Home”)This film starred Kris Kristofferson as a Vietnam War vet returning to his family after a 20-year absence. STAFF PICKS:New Orleans Is Sinking by the Tragically HipWayne turns to the college rock genre to start off our staff picks. The Tragically Hip is better known in their native Canada than in the US, but their music is well worth a listen. This song was recorded in Memphis, and has a delta blues feel, almost rockabilly. The song was temporarily removed from radio playlists after hurricane Katrina broke the levies and flooded New Orleans. Wait for You by BonhamIf you think that this song sounds like Led Zeppelin, you aren't the only one. Rob features Jason Bonham's band. Jason Bonham was the son of the late Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham. Jason Bonham has a playing style very similar to his father, and recruited Daniel McMaster to the band on vocals - a singer with a sound very similar to Zeppelin front man Robert Palmer. This is the main single from the debut album, "The Disregard of Timekeeping." Poison by Alice CooperLynch brings us a song from Cooper's eighteenth album, "Trash." This song was a major comeback single for Cooper, his first top 10 single in the US in 12 years. The song tells the story of a guy entrapped by a girl that he knows is wrong for him, but also someone he can't let go.Down Boys by Warrant Greg finishes the staff picks with another hair metal band. This is the debut single from Warrant's debut album, "Dirty Rotten Filthy Stinking Rich." It reached number 27 on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Stand On It by Jeff Beck with Terry Bozzio and Tony HymasWe close out with a guitar instrumental from guitar virtuoso Jeff Beck, accompanied by drummer Terry Bozzio and keyboardist Tony Hymas. This week we converge to listen and remember the music and life of legendary guitarist, Jeff Beck, who died last week at the age of 78. He was such an influential guitarist with a born gift for the instrument, and we spend the whole hour talking about his life & legacy as one of the greatest rock guitarists of all time.Songs:Jeff Beck - “Cause We've Ended as Lovers” The Yardbirds - “The Train Kept A-Rollin'” The Yardbirds - “Stroll On”Jeff Beck - “Shapes of Things” (Truth, 1968)Stevie Wonder - “Lookin' For Another Pure Love”Jeff Beck - “Led Boots”Roger Waters - “What God Wants, Pt 1”Jeff Beck and Rod Stewart - “People Get Ready”Jeff Beck's Guitar Shop - “Day in the House (with Terry Bozzio & Tony Hymas)”Jeff Beck - “Beck's Bolero”
The supergroup U.K. was founded by former King Crimson percussionist Bill Bruford (also a former founder of Yes) and bassist and vocalist John Wetton (also a former member of Uriah Heep, and Roxy Music). After failing to reform King Crimson, each of the two brought in a musician they thought would work well in the group. Wetton brought in Eddie Jobson, violinist and keyboardist from Frank Zappa's band. Bruford brought in Allan Holdsworth on guitars (who had worked on Bruford's prior solo project. Their self titled debut album was released in May, 1978. Although a couple of songs were edited for single release, the album U.K. is best known as a prog rock masterpiece, and is cited as inspirational to many musicians who followed in the prog rock genre. After an extensive tour supporting the album, Wetton and Jobson had a falling out with Holdsworth and fired him. Bill Bruford left at that time and was replaced by Terry Bozzio, another alumnus of Frank Zappa's band and a future founding member of Missing Persons. John Wetton would go on in the days after U.K. to be the front man for Asia.Rob brings us the prog rock monster-piece. In the Dead of NightThe track that leads off the album was one of two songs to be edited for release as a single. On the album it is the first of three songs which form a continuous suite on the first album side. The 7/4 time and the synthesizer - the Yamaha CS-80 had just been released - are prog rock hallmarks. The electric violin is an unusual addition.By the Light of DayThis track is the second movement of the "In the Dead of Night" suite. Rather than have a clear change in tracks, there is a slow transition via a "spacey" interlude into the new song of the suite. "Black clouds moving gray skies to thunder. Kinetic sunrise fever and flood. Fire and water element anger horizon melting to blood."Presto Vivace and RepriseThis is the third movement of the "In the Dead of Night suite. This is a much faster piece (as the term Vivace would suggest) before transitioning back into a reprise of "In the Dead of Night."Time to KillThe abrupt start to this song is due to the way the tracks drift into each other. The concept is that of boredom, of being stuck in a place. "Time to kill, going nowhere, killing time, staying where there's time to kill, going nowhere..." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:That'll Be the Day by Buddy Holly (from the motion picture "The Buddy Holly Story") Gary Busey was nominated for the Oscar for his portrayal of early rocker Buddy Holly in this film. Busey would sing and play for the part. STAFF PICKS:Goodbye Girl by David Gates Bruce leads off the staff picks with a soft rock solo from former Bread front man David Gates. The song is from the Neil Simon movie "The Goodbye Girl," which would lead to Richard Dreyfuss becoming the youngest man to win an Oscar for Best Actor at the time. Lay Down Sally by Eric Clapton Brian presents a pop hit from Clapton's album Slowhand. It went to number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was written by Clapton, George Terry (guitar), and Marcy Levy (who sings the female parts on the song). It was written in the country blues style of J.J. Cale, and hit number 26 on the Hot Country Songs chart, Clapton's best showing on that chart as a crossover.Ain't It Fun by Dead BoysWayne features a song from Cleveland's own Dead Boys. This song appears on their second studio album, "We Have Come for Your Children." They were known as one of the rowdiest bands on the punk scene. It hit number 8 on the Mainstream Rock charts, and is an ode to the punk rock lifestyle. With a Little Luck by WingsRob brings us Paul McCartney with a song recorded largely in the Virgin Islands on a yacht equipped with a 24-track mobile recording studio installed on it. This single from the album "London Town" hit number 1 on the pop charts. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Alaska by U.K. This instrumental lets us do some double dipping with the track that leads off side 2 of the U.K. album.

Gary Husband is one of a rare breed of musicians in that his expression is divided equally in his capacity as a drummer and a pianist and keyboardist of international repute. His classical roots, his quest and development in the improvisational, jazz and jazz/fusion areas – not to mention his tenure in the pop, rock, funk and blues circuits – are all evident inside Gary's distinct and far-reaching musical personality. His solo album and DVD output has also reinforced his status as a critically acclaimed writer and arranger in the contemporary music world. For close to four decades Gary has worked alongside a vast and eclectic range of celebrated musicians including John McLaughlin, Allan Holdsworth, Jeff Beck, Jack Bruce (Cream), Gary Moore (Thin Lizzy), British pop/funk band Level 42, Billy Cobham, Al Jarreau, Mike Stern (Miles Davis), John Wetton (King Crimson), Chris Squire (Yes), Andy Summers (The Police), Steve Hackett (Genesis), Robin Trower (Procol Harum), and with producers Sir George Martin (Beatles), Trevor Horn (Grace Jones & Art of Noise), Quincy Jones (Michael Jackson), Jerry Hey and James Guthrie (Pink Floyd). One of the staple groups of the early 80's New Wave genre was Missing Persons. Their debut album with Capital Records was Spring Session M, an anagram of the band's name. The founding trio was vocalist Dale Bozzio, drummer (and Dale's husband) Terry Bozzio, and guitarist Warren Cuchunullo. The Bozzio's were working with Frank Zappa and met Cuchunullo when he contributed to a Zappa album. The trio worked with session musicians, created an EP, and established a successful presence in Los Angeles. They added bassist Patrick O'Hearn and keyboardist Chuck Wild to the band before producing their debut album.Spring Session M was a success, riding the New Wave genre to popularity. Dale Bozzio's makeup and quirky vocals added to that success, as did her photogenic presence in the band's videos on the fledgling cable channel MTV. Unfortunately, Spring Session M would also be the high water mark for the band, with follow-up albums failing to achieve similar success. The band broke up in 1986, as did the Bozzio's marriage. However Dale Bozzio, Cuchunullo, and O'Hearn would continue to work together on solo projects and Mission Persons reunions. The band tours today, with Dale Bozzio as the only founding member still present. WindowsThis song expresses the idea of watching life from the safety of the windows rather than participating in it. It was the third of four singles released from the album. Words"What are words for when no one listens?" The lyrics for this song chronicles the apathy of society and the efforts that people make to be seen and heard: "Do you hear me? Do you care?" "Not only are they deaf and dumb they could be going blind and no one notices. I think I'll die my hair blue." This is also a good example of Dale Bozzio's vocal range.Noticeable OneAlthough there was some airplay for this song, it was not released as a single. Continuing the theme of attention or lack of attention, this song calls for the listener to "Notice me!"Destination Unknown The biggest hit (tied with "Words" on the charts) only went to number 42, but spent 13 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100. The synth heavy song was on their 1980 EP, and was released on this album. It saw heavy airplay in the early days of MTV. "Life is so strange (destination unknown) when you don't know your destination." ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:The Imperial March (the Darth Vader Theme from the motion picture “The Empire Strikes Back”)This movie was re-released (actually the third release) in November 1982 in preparation for the third installment in the trilogy to follow. STAFF PICKS:New World Man by RushBrian's staff pick is from the album Signals. "He's noble enough to know what's right but weak enough not to choose it. He's wise enough to win the world but fool enough to lose it." Surprisingly this is the highest charting single by Rush hitting number 21 on the Billboard Top 40 - the only Rush song to make the top 40. The song was a last-minute addition to the album. Don't Fight It by Kenny Loggins and Steve PerryBruce brings us a song off Kenny Loggin's album "High Adventure." Loggins and Perry co-wrote this rocker with Dean Pitchford who would go on to write the screenplay for Footloose. The guitar work is from Neil Giraldo, Pat Benatar's husband and guitarist. This is one of Perry's furst non-Journey works, and he was looking to connect with other songwriters as he prepared to work on his solo album. Halloween by the Dead KennedysWayne features a punk work which encourages people to be themselves each day rather than just putting on masks at Halloween. The Dead Kennedys formed in 1978, and this song is off their second studio album, "Plastic Surgery Disasters." They recorded four albums before breaking up in 1986, though they have reformed from time to time ever since.Crazy by SupertrampRob's staff pick is "a little song to make you feel good," a deep cut off the last album with Roger Hodgson. It is off their studio album "...Famous Last Words..." which was their follow-up to the amazingly successful "Breakfast in America." The album would reach number 5 on the album charts and contained the hit "It's Raining Again." INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:D. N. A. by A Flock of SeagullsWe close out with an instrumental from New Wave artists A Flock of Seagulls.

I have really enjoyed doing my show over the last 5 years. I've met so many incredible people. I've chatted with amazing bands and influential creatives who breathe life into the artform.A good buddy of mine knew perpetually upcoming music producer, Chris Collier and made the introduction. Why do I say perpetually upcoming? Because Chris is always upping his game. He won't rest on his accomplishments, and why would he stop now? He's at the top of his game, for now, but there's always another artistic mountain to climb, so most of us will keep watching from afar, wondering how he's done it.If you actually listen to the entire show, you'll know the secret, which, in many ways, hasn't ever been a secret, but simply a way of being. I highly suggest we all try to be a little more like Chris Collier and love what we do with an unrivaled zeal. Ray Charles - The Sun Died (1968) Ray Charles - Understanding (1968) This song only reached #46 in 1968, but it was a big enough hit to inspire the odd-ball takeoff recorded by The Red Shadow. It contains the unfortunate little snippet: My old lady also understands that a man must have respect What I mean is, if she must play around don't let me catch her, because what I don't see can't hurt me, you understand? But on the other hand, If I should ever catch her I'm not gonna talk about-a and call her a bunch of bad names like you all might No no mh What I'm gonna do, I'm gonna go down-town to the Hardware store and buy myself a double blade ax, Come back, square off, and believe her soul's gonna Belong to the good lord Because her head's gonna belong to me, and I Guarantee she'll know what I mean when I'll say... The Red Shadow - Understanding Marx (1975) Red Shadow was an odd outfit performing polemical rock and roll from the mid-1970s. The core of the group was three ideologically minded economists who met at the University of Michigan in the early 1970s. They decided to form a band to preach the urgent message of left-wing economics. Red Shadow put out two albums, Live at the Panacea Hilton (1975) and Better Red (1978) [Ed: WHICH I JUST BOUGHT FOR YOU!!]. Red Shadow's song “Gone Gone Gone” is a parody of the Beach Boys' “Fun Fun Fun” in which the malign corporate overlords will be “gone gone gone when the workers take their power away.” Similarly, “Anything Good” reworks Chuck Berry's “Johnny B. Goode” to accommodate the following lyric: They may know how to serve the ruling corporate brass But they'll never have the knowledge of the working class No no, no they don't know know know Anything good Sammy Davis Jr. - The People Tree (1972) Written by Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse, who also wrote Sammy's only #1 hit, "The Candy Man". That song was from the soundtrack to the movie Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory. "The People Tree" was, in fact, the follow-up single, and it sank without a trace. Gordon Parks - Blowin' Your Mind (1972) With vocals by O. C. Smith, whose big hit was "Little Green Apples". Talk about trying to make lightning strike twice (see "The People Tree")! O. C. Smith had been recording since the mid-'50s, starting out as Ocie Smith. An excellent stylist. I could and should do a whole show about him. Leonard Nimoy - Spock Thoughts (1967) The Beach Bums (alias for Doug Brown and the Omens) - The Ballad of the Yellow Beret (1966) With Bob Seger(!) on vocals. Look at the composer. From AllMusic: Despite a meager recorded output, Doug Brown and the Omens continue to hold a key place in Detroit rock and roll history as a launching pad for the young Bob Seger. Brown was already fronting the Omens when he first met Seger in 1964, soon inviting the aspiring singer/songwriter to join the band; financed by Del Shannon, sometime around 1965 the group cut a single, "TGIF"/"First Girl," which represents Seger's first known official recording. In January 1966, Brown produced Seger's regional solo blockbuster "East Side Story," the record credited with making the singer a Detroit superstar; the following summer, he also helmed Seger's "Heavy Music," another local smash. Which doesn't excuse this particularly tone-deaf single. I guess no one thought their darker moments would be around in 2021. The Osmonds - Havin' A Party (1975) Gentle Giant - Weekend Cowboy (1970) The Isley Brothers - Sweet Season/Keep On Walkin' (1972) Pat Boone - Wish You Were Here, Buddy (1966) James William Guercio - Tell Me (1973) Terry Kath on vocals, uncredited. Bob McGrath - Sir Duke (1977) The Utica Club Natural Carbonation Beer Drinking Song (1968) The band playing on this is the Chicago-based The Trolls. Richard Berry - Doin' It (1973) Richard Berry wrote and recorded the original 'Louie, Louie,' later performed by The Kingsmen. It is the second most-covered song in the history of rock music. Be Thankful For What You Got (inst.) - William DeVaughn (1974) From Wikipedia: DeVaughn was a salaried government employee as a drafting technician and a part-time singer. He wrote a song called "A Cadillac Don't Come Easy", which was eventually re-written to become "Be Thankful for What You Got", in 1972. He spent $900 towards getting it recorded with Omega Sound, a Philadelphia production house. The record producer at Omega, John Davis (a member of the MFSB studio session group), came up with a smooth arrangement, eventually booking time to record at Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia, used by Philadelphia International Records. The song was released on Roxbury Records, a subsidiary of Chelsea Records, run by industry veteran Wes Farrell. You know him from his work with The Partridge Family. The record sold nearly two million copies on its release in spring 1974, reaching No. 1 on the US Billboard R&B chart and No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100. With a sound and content influenced by Curtis Mayfield, its simple and encouraging lyrics hit home, to the extent that it became featured on gospel radio stations. When his success as a recording artist seemed guaranteed, DeVaughn quit his government job. DeVaughn released an album, mainly of songs with a religious character, and its second single, "Blood Is Thicker than Water", reached No. 10 R&B and No. 43 pop later in 1974; "Give the Little Man a Great Big Hand" had only minor R&B chart success early the following year. Live, DeVaughn preached to and admonished his audience from the stage [Ed: Just like George Harrison!]. He lost interest in the music industry not long afterward, working in a record store and again as a draftsman. Dave Dudley - Coffee, Coffee, Coffee (1965) Written by Tom T. Hall. Terry Jacks - Put The Bone In (1974) Lee Edwards (The Christian Con Man) - Maui Girl (1983) From one of the biggest inspirations for this show, for better or worse, 365 Days Project: "The Christian Con Man Goes Hawaiian" is like a three-wheeled Radio Flyer rolling down a rocky hill. It starts slow but careens out of control by the journey's end. The track "Maui Girl" appears at the point when Lee Edwards is really picking up momentum (or another glass of cheap whiskey). "KIMCHEE LOVIN'!! I SHOOK HER COCONUTS!" UK - In The Dead of Night (1979) This is the almost never-heard single recorded with Terry Bozzio on drums, instead of the original with the also-great Bill Bruford. Bill Haley and the Comets - Me and Bobby McGee (1972) The Four Tops - So Deep Within You (1973) Odd to hear The Four Tops cover The Moody Blues. This has to be Justin Heyward on lead guitar. HAS to be. IS. Here is an article. Fanny - Conversation With a Cop (1970) From Discogs: Fanny was an American rock band, active in the early 1970s. They were one of the first all-female rock groups to achieve critical and commercial success, including two Billboard Hot 100 top 40 singles. The group was founded by guitarist June Millington and her sister, bassist Jean, who had been playing music together since they moved from the Philippines to California in the early 1960s. After playing in several bands, they attracted the interest of producer Richard Perry who signed them to Reprise Records in 1969 as Fanny. The band recorded four albums together before June Millington quit the group. Following a final album, Fanny disbanded in 1975. Lee Dorsey - Yes We Can Can (1970) Jackie Lynton - The Ballad Of Hank McCain (1969) From the soundtrack to "Gli Intoccabili" (aka "Machine Gun McCain"); Written by Ennio Morricone. Fricking GREAT. GTOs - Circular Circulation (1969) Hugh X. Lewis - Evolution and The Bible (1968) Frank and Nancy Sinatra - Life's a Trippy Thing (1971?) Renaissance - Island (1969)
Living in the United States presents difficulties when you're trying to find new music for inspiration. Oftentimes, I leaf through YouTube, watching some older favorites and the algorithm points me towards a band I might enjoy. This happened again recently with a Danish band called VOLA. This band writes incredibly thoughtful, engaging melodic songs with complex rhythms that speak to the drummer in me.Having reached out via social media to connect with the band through their management, I was pleased to find that Adam Janzi, their drummer, was open and available for a chat to talk about the new album, Witness.Witness is due out on May 21st, and at the time of this recording is still roughly 6 weeks away. I hope that you hear this show and realize that not only VOLA is worth cherishing, but that it's young drummer, Adam is a man with a destiny and purpose as a new classic. This is my interview with the thoughtful and insightful Adam Janzi on the Rockstar Superhero podcast.Time Codes:1:45 The ability to play for the song4:00 What does a name mean?7:00 Creative choices of the landscape11:10 Keeping to oneself in Scandinavia14:30 Being a kid in Sweden18:00 Secular vs religious and keeping it away21:30 Didn't have to pick religion26:30 Doing drum covers for an audition29:25 Double edged American swords33:00 Living the musical career isn't rosy36:20 Knowing when to take the attention away40:20 Cinematic music courtesy of VOLA43:30 Worshipping through music and perfect moments47:30 Influenced by Terry Bozzio?50:50 Queen of the Damned54:30 What emotion drives the band?Subscribe to the shows here:1) Rockstar Superhero:Itunes: https://apple.co/3u8wlI9Audible: https://adbl.co/3sCnfSkSpotify: https://spoti.fi/3qxjQDLGoogle: https://bit.ly/3kC66WaTumblr: https://bit.ly/3ttKmzfDeezer: https://bit.ly/2Zr5lW7JioSaavn: https://bit.ly/3k29jhvCastbox: https://bit.ly/3bunV6UiHeartRadio: https://ihr.fm/2PKvm172) Rockstar Radicals:Itunes: https://apple.co/2OR4kVx Spotify: https://spoti.fi/3qHHFZHDeezer: https://bit.ly/3srQ3grPodchaser: https://bit.ly/2NG2UwLGoogle: https://bit.ly/3uIQVzkJioSaavn: https://bit.ly/387Y2HGCastbox: https://bit.ly/3t0yCUliHeartRadio: https://ihr.fm/3vbWKFuBlog @ Tumblr: https://bit.ly/3cQqRKwWanna be on the show? It was an honor to talk with one of my favorite musicians and biggest musical influences, Gary Husband. In this conversation, Gary talks about his journey from early gigs as a teenager with the Syd Lawrence Orchestra, to 36 years of working with Allan Holdsworth, to working with John McLaughlin and the 4th Dimension, and more. Gary also shares his thoughts about “success” and the difference between waiting for opportunities versus creating opportunities. Be sure to check out Gary's website and his newly launched VideoCast education videos. They're amazing! http://www.garyhusband.com Gary Husband is one of a rare breed of musicians in that his expression is divided equally in his capacity as a drummer and a pianist and keyboardist of international repute. Further associations and performing/recording credits include his work with Randy Brecker, Jan Hammer, Jerry Goodman, fusion/jam band Gongzilla, Germany's NDR Bigband, Soft Machine, Maria Schneider, Christian McBride, Eddie Van Halen, Dean Brown, Bob Berg, Nguyên Lê, Joe Lovano, Charles Tolliver, Bireli Lagrène, Peter Erskine, Ron Sexsmith, drum n' bass protagonists Lemon ‘D' and Dillinja. As an internationally established drum clinician he has performed alongside Dennis Chambers, Vinnie Colaiuta, Terry Bozzio, Billy Cobham, Simon Phillips, Omar Hakim, Ricky Lawson, Todd Sucherman, Paul Wertico, Denny Seiwell and Bernard Purdie, and most recently has been developing a series of motivational videocasts in drumming. His alter-ego as a pianist/keyboard player brings an extra dimension to his musicality at the drums. Indeed, he has been the keyboardist & second drummer in John McLaughlin's 4th Dimension since 2007. Gary continues to devote a substantial proportion of his time recording and performing worldwide across many styles of music.
Check out the new single "She Rides Fire" Here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uSTLlYoRtXg Inspired by rock icons Led Zeppelin, Blondie, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Killing Joke, Soundgarden, Queens of the Stone Age, Iggy Pop and more, Chainflower guitarist, songwriter, producer and founder Kelly Wheeler, created a vision of music and art that has driven the new band to major recognition in the music industry. Kelly has also gained success with recording and live appearances alongside other legendary artists from iconic bands including Jane's Addiction, Berlin, Tool and Guns 'N Roses. Kelly is also the artist and director of Chainflower visuals from album art to concert posters to music videos. Kelly's recent search for a new singer led him to acclaimed vocalist, songwriter and recording artist, Syd Duran. While signed to Hollywood Records, Syd landed her first tour opening for the Jonas Brothers. She has opened for the epic rock band Korn and performed at major music festivals with Avenged Sevenfold, Godsmack, Disturbed, Sevendust and Lita Ford. Syd's powerful vocals received national headlines as the featured artist on Breaking Benjamin's popular single “Blow Me Away”, hitting number 5 on the Billboard Rock Charts and heard in the Halo 2 original soundtrack. Syd's solo work and recent single “Dust and Bone” continues to be featured on major TV networks and national commercials, including FIFA Women's World Cup, 20/20, The Walking Dead, 68 Whiskey, American Gods, Total Bellas, ABC, E!, FOX and MTV. After writing and recording new songs scheduled for release this year, Kelly and Syd were introduced to drummer Raanen Bozzio by good friend and world-renowned drummer, Ryan Brown, who suggested that Raanen join them on Chainflower's journey. Raanen Bozzio is the powerful drummer and son of drumming legend Terry Bozzio. Surrounded by music growing up, Raanen started playing professionally at age 11. He has recorded and shared the stage with many prominent artists including Cypress Hill, Wednesday 13, Periphery, Weed Eater, The Memorials, Orgy, Fact Pattern, and Lords of the Damned. Raanen is endorsed by Sabian Cymbals, DW Drums, Promark Drumsticks and Evans Drumheads. Chainflower's music is a collection of soul-baring, youth and female-driven rock about empowerment, restlessness, and self-image, that captures the fleeting, ultimately beautiful uncertainties that come with growing up and beyond. “Rock hasn't always been inclusive, but there are certainly strong women that kicked in doors for bands like us,” Kelly and Syd say. “We believe that now is the greatest time in rock for amazingly talented women and the talented men who recognize them.” https://chainflowermusic.com/ https://www.instagram.com/Chainflowermusic/ https://www.facebook.com/Chainflowermusic https://twitter.com/ChainflowerLA This episode is proudly brought to you by: #Betterhelp : https://www.betterhelp.com/sipod for 10% off #Coldest Water Bottle: Use code "10DEREK" for 10% off https://thecoldestwater.com/ #LootCrate : http://loot.cr/3rWoAnw Code "Suckitpodcast" for 15% off BUY MERCH!!!!! #Merch Store: https://www.dckproductions.com/shop Follow me: https://www.instagram.com/suckitpodcast https://www.facebook.com/suckitpodcast https://www.twitter.com/suckit_podcast --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thedarksideofmusic/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thedarksideofmusic/support

If you ask Chainflower what kind of music they create, their response may surprise you. “Savagely unique,” they'll say, which turns out to be the perfect description for the rising band's personal brand of insightful modern rock. Their aggressive sound has been hailed as a modern rock and roll cocktail sparkling with influences of Led Zeppelin, Evanescence, Paramore, Stone Temple Pilots, The Dead Weather, The Pretty Reckless, Black Sabbath and The Runaways. Coming from Los Angeles, the prodigious band was destined for rock stardom long before they signed a distribution deal with Universal Music Group Distribution/Hood Associates Records and racked up positive reviews in the press with only a handful of songs out at the time. After Chainflower released two critically acclaimed EPs, they became “a modern touchstone for a new crop of rock artists,” as College Music Journal noted, adding that “the blast radius of Chainflower is expansive.” NeuFutur went on to say, “Chainflower is gritty and hard-hitting with a complexity that few in this style have. There are nods to the Detroit rock scene, the 80s goth of Sisters of Mercy, and just enough punk rock to keep things going at breakneck speed. While they could easily succeed in the grunge 90s, the time for Chainflower is now.” I Am Entertainment continued, “Chainflower is able to create rough and tumble rock that has enough catchiness to merit serious radio play. The guitars sizzle while the intense vocals and splashy drums shine, effectively tattooing their music deep in the hearts of those listening.” Inspired by rock icons Led Zeppelin, Blondie, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Killing Joke, Soundgarden, Queens of the Stone Age, Iggy Pop and more, Chainflower guitarist, songwriter, producer and founder Kelly Wheeler, created a vision of music and art that has driven the new band to major recognition in the music industry. Be sure to check out Gary’s website and his newly launched VideoCast education videos. They’re amazing! http://www.garyhusband.com Gary Husband is one of a rare breed of musicians in that his expression is divided equally in his capacity as a drummer and a pianist and keyboardist of international repute. His classical roots, his quest and development in the improvisational, jazz and jazz/fusion areas – not to mention his tenure in the pop, rock, funk and blues circuits – are all evident inside Gary’s distinct and far-reaching musical personality. His solo album and DVD output has also reinforced his status as a critically acclaimed writer and arranger in the contemporary music world. For close to four decades Gary has worked alongside a vast and eclectic range of celebrated musicians including John McLaughlin, Allan Holdsworth, Jeff Beck, Jack Bruce (Cream), Gary Moore (Thin Lizzy), British pop/funk band Level 42, Billy Cobham, Al Jarreau, Mike Stern (Miles Davis), John Wetton (King Crimson), Chris Squire (Yes), Andy Summers (The Police), Steve Hackett (Genesis), Robin Trower (Procol Harum), and with producers Sir George Martin (Beatles), Trevor Horn (Grace Jones & Art of Noise), Quincy Jones (Michael Jackson), Jerry Hey and James Guthrie (Pink Floyd). Further associations and performing/recording credits include his work with Randy Brecker, Jan Hammer, Jerry Goodman, fusion/jam band Gongzilla, Germany’s NDR Bigband, Soft Machine, Maria Schneider, Christian McBride, Eddie Van Halen, Dean Brown, Bob Berg, Nguyên Lê, Joe Lovano, Charles Tolliver, Bireli Lagrène, Peter Erskine, Ron Sexsmith, drum n’ bass protagonists Lemon ‘D’ and Dillinja. Indeed, he has been the keyboardist & second drummer in John McLaughlin’s 4th Dimension since 2007. Gary continues to devote a substantial proportion of his time recording and performing worldwide across many styles of music.
Dematus is a three piece melodic metal band hailing originally from Rolla, Missouri. Over the years the band has played numerous shows ranging from backyard parties to festivals from all over the country even taking part in charity events and has had extensive airplay. Now currently located in Pittsburgh they have shared the stage with Otep, Chimaira, Soulfly, Mushroomhead, Bleed The Sky, Oceano, New Year's Day, Stolen Babies, iWrestledabearonce, Soilwork, Devil You Know, and many more. It has been said that the band could best be described as Evanescence and System of a Down's illegitimate child. Passionate about stunning the crowd with her abilities and talents the band is fronted by Jessica, a wide ranging, screaming and operatic stylist. Jessica also plays lead and rhythm guitar reminiscent and inspired by the likes of 80's guitarists Randy Rhoads and Dave Mustaine, along with current guitar virtuoso John 5. In addition Jessica is classically trained flutist and is a lyricist and composer for the band. She has won several awards including The John Phillips Sousa Award and The Marine Semper Fidelis Award. On the drums, Ryan keeps the band in step with his fierce beats and is a born metronome. Although he had received classical and jazz training in his youth, Ryan's more dominant and ferocious side took over in his teens pulling him into the metal music. Able to read music, play the xylophone, timpani, and percussion instruments, he has been a long time band section leader. His talents being likened to, and inspired by, some of the all time greats such as Terry Bozzio, Carter Beauford, Neil Purt, Will Hunt, and many more. Self taught bassist, Brian, is undoubtedly the heartbeat and high energy source of the band. Having a natural ear for music, one would definitely call him a raw, yet polished, talent. As Brian would say, he doesn't play under the influence of other musicians. His goal, as a musician, is to simply reach beyond his know talents while striving to find new levels.

As a little girl, she took piano lessons, but ultimately, went on to try out for drum corps in her hometown in upper Michigan. She was one of two girls there. How she hears rhythms in everyday activities, even when she is climbing stairs or driving! She tells us how the idea that she "looks like a librarian” and other factors may have kept her from being hired to play in rock bands. She did not let anything hold her back from finding opportunities to showcase her drumming. She played in bands and posted instructional videos on Instagram and YouTube. She was discovered on Instagram by Drumeo and was invited to Vancouver to film a cover of the metal song “Down with the Sickness” by Disturbia. She delivered a powerful message - “Don't judge a drummer or anybody by their looks.” By delivering that message, she has been an inspiration to many aspiring drummers.Dorothea also teaches online and she even taught a nearly 90 year old man.She encourages us not to deter ourselves from pursuing a passion. You can find Dorothea on YouTube and Instagram. Here is the Drumeo video for the cover mentioned in the interview. The Mindful MinuteWhenever you are doing an activity that requires sitting for long periods of time, don't forget to take breaks. Here's an easy one to let go of tension in your neck, shoulders, and wrists. Start by establishing long and even breaths in and out of your nose. Don't hold your breath at any time. Sitting up tall in Mountain Pose, tilt your head side to side. (PAUSE) Next, turn your head side to side like you are saying no. (PAUSE)And now tilt your head up and down as if you're saying yes. (PAUSE) Next, roll your shoulder forward five times. (PAUSE). Roll them backwards five times. (PAUSE) And now, interlace your fingers, roll your hands forward, one at a time, holding on to the interlace. (PAUSE)Release your fingers and now stack the opposite thumb and fingers on top as you interlace your fingers again. This is going to feel uncomfortable because this is not the way you're used to interlacing your fingers. Roll your hands backward, one at a time. (PAUSE)
Pat welcomes Beth Fieger Falkenstein to the show to share her memories of her brother, legendary frontman of The Knack, Doug Fieger.

Presentatie: Peter de Ruiter De muziek die je hoort: Nasal retentive calliope music (We're only in it for the money, 1968) Are you hung up? Johnny Royal is a good friend of mine from college, and I wanted to reach out to him and Nero in Hollywood, California to see how his band Black Lodge is doing out there, and how the music scene compares to Pittsburgh.
