We're peeling back the layers of addiction and sobriety's complex landscape with the help of Dr. Blair Steel, guiding us through the science and heartache of substance dependence. Embrace the nuances of "California sober," a term that's as multifaceted as the journeys of those who walk the line between recovery and relapse. Our discussion spans from the shifting tide in marijuana legislation to the perils of fentanyl-laced recreational drugs, stressing the critical need for a strong foundation of sobriety for those grappling with addiction. Blair also explains the intricate dance of emotions and avoidance behaviors that often lead individuals to substance abuse. Through the lens of generational attitudes and the biochemistry of addiction, we dissect how dopamine's allure and the brain's quest for homeostasis can contribute to dependency on substances and activities alike. From the potency of emotional support to the delicate balance required in holistic healing, our conversation illuminates the importance of facing our feelings head-on for true mental health and personal growth. Why Meaning and Purpose is the Root of Life & Recovery (Episode 105) We are in a massive mental health crisis in America, and facing an even worse addiction and opioid epidemic. In addition to being addicted, so many others are drifting through life sad, depressed, hopeless and lacking meaning and purpose in their lives. In this episode we dive into why, and how discovering our higher calling is so vital in the recovery process and how it helps nurture our lives. Learn about some important people who have made a huge impact in our world through finding meaning and purpose, even during horrific pain and tragedy and how it saved their lives. Find out how this concept is cultivated in recovery; and how faith in God and the good news of the gospel takes this idea to an entirely different level, one of eternal perspective.
The manipulation of the timing and dose of kiwifruit may have applications in terms of sleep and recovery (e.g., antioxidant consumption in relation to training) in athletes that warrant further investigation. The results presented suggest a potential role for kiwifruit consumption in sleep promotion and recovery protocols for elite athletes. Consuming 2 kiwifruit 1 h before bed is a practical wholefood-based intervention that can easily be implemented in real-world settings. Kiwifruit is available in wholefood form, but it is also consumed in various processed forms, e.g., drinks, sweets, lyophilised products (i.e., freeze dried), dehydrated products and juices [64]. Further research is warranted to develop protocols and/or products designed specifically to promote sleep and/or recovery in elite athletes. #kiwi #exercise #sleep Doherty, R., Madigan, S., Nevill, A., Warrington, G., & Ellis, J. Why Relapse is a Normal Part of Recovery (Episode 47) While relapse is certainly not encouraged, it is usually a normal part of the addiction recovery process. Negative emotions are one of the main causes of relapse. Many people who struggle with addictions experience emotional, physical and environmental triggers they may not be aware of because they are disconnected from themselves emotionally. In addition, we may not have the best coping skills since we have used our addiction to cope with challenges and sooth our pain. In this episode we explore what lapse and relapse is, how it happens, why it is normal, and some relapse prevention strategies. Please share this podcast with anyone you know who needs help.

“I’m in recovery from mental illness,” is a common phrase in our circles. Sure, mental illness is replaced with the specifics – schizophrenia, bipolar, or depression, to name a few – but the idea that people consider themselves to be living a life free from the symptoms of mental illness is a common one. However, is it true? Is recovery actually a thing? Or are all these people just deluding themselves? Gabe and Michelle discuss this – and more – on this episode of A Bipolar, a Schizophrenic, and a Podcast. Highlights from ‘Recovery’ Episode [1:40] Are Michelle and Gabe in recovery? [4:30] What is recovery and where did that term come from? [7:00] Should we be policing language or context surrounding mental illness? [11:00] What’s all the fuss over person first language? [16:30] Why do we think people dislike the word “recovery”? [19:00] What word should we use instead, if not “recovery”?
