What does it mean to be California Sober? Marijuana or cannabis is available in so many forms now: edibles, tinctures, vaping oils, and dry leaf. It is also becoming more acceptable as a substance of use. Today we have Kim Porter and Bob Lamb from our partner Be A Part of the Conversation here with us to talk about this California Sober trend as well as harm reduction, how using high THC products is not the same as marijuana from the past, and the mental health risks that come with cannabis use including an overall sense of apathy. We also talk about how parents can role model responsible use of marijuana if they have a medical marijuana card and the dopamine of it all. We touched on so many topics in this conversation, join us! Things we mentioned in this episode: Kim was our first guest on the podcast! On this episode of Clean and Sober Radio, host Gary Hendler and cohost Mark Sigmund discuss a confusing national trend. Some claim that because they are not using their old drugs of choice but using others instead, they are clean and sober. Take for instance, country recording artist Jelly Roll. He claims that because he abstains from cocaine and opiates but smokes weed, he is sober. In some circles it is called "California Sober." Are you really sober when you are using, just not using the drugs that got you high and addicted? That's our discussion on this program.

“It still feels like a miracle to me. How I was able to do something I never thought I could do. It's so important to connect back to moments like that when facing something difficult.” Justin Wolf started New Brew, a euphoric seltzer, about a year ago after leaving alcohol behind in October 2021. Despite looking like a well-adjusted human with a successful career and marriage, Justin was hiding a dirty little secret (or so he thought). An ultimatum and the healing power of psychedelic drugs led him to find freedom from alcohol and create his own sober•ish journey. After years of traditional treatment from therapy to pharmaceuticals it was when he developed his own tool kit of support that he was able to truly step into his version of sobriety. He shares about the importance of finding your baseline without any substance, including coffee, to know what it feels like to just operate as you and the power of showing yourself “I'm okay when I have nothing in my system.” We discuss how just because people don't want to drink alcohol doesn't necessarily mean they don't want to partake in an altering activity, it's just the booze that is destructive for them. We talk about how important it is for young kids to know what alcohol really does to your body and mind as so much development is going on during the times that kids are taught alcohol is cool. This is such an important conversation as we are in a time where there are so many healing modalities outside of what we have traditionally thought of. I am so grateful for people like Justin and his team who are disrupting the booze industry and I could not be more in their corner. Check out New Brew at www.drinknewbrew.com. About Sober•ish Uprising At Sober•ish Uprising we find freedom from alcohol on our own terms. Founded by Holly Krivokapich, a former heavy drinker who started a sober•ish uprising of her own and everything changed, we know it's not about saying no to the drink but saying yes to you. Holly works with 40ish, personal development junkies who are ready to put their sober curiosity into action, making it their next power move, and doing so with all the fun and none of the dread. Through our podcast, 1:1 coaching and her signature program The Sober•ish Experiment, we support those to create and live their own sober•ish journey. www.soberishuprising.com JUSTIN WOLF, CEO & CO-FOUNDER OF NEW BREW Justin Wolf started New Brew after being frustrated by all the non-alc and "functional beverage" options that didn't live up to their claims. While traveling in Mexico, he experienced the transformative benefits of Kava Root and Kratom Leaf, and set out with his two brothers to create a RTD beverage for California Sober and health conscious individuals like him. Caitlin Clark signs with Indiana of WNBA for a whopping $76, 000. Shed no tears, though, as she'll make 8-figures in endorsements. Not bad for a rookie. Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis signed a bill to require the teaching of the dangers and atrocities of communism in grades K-12. OK, but why did we need a law to do this? Aren't Florida schools already teaching political and economic isystems? Sounds like grandstanding by the Gov one more time. We're peeling back the layers of addiction and sobriety's complex landscape with the help of Dr. Blair Steel, guiding us through the science and heartache of substance dependence. Embrace the nuances of "California sober," a term that's as multifaceted as the journeys of those who walk the line between recovery and relapse. Our discussion spans from the shifting tide in marijuana legislation to the perils of fentanyl-laced recreational drugs, stressing the critical need for a strong foundation of sobriety for those grappling with addiction. Blair also explains the intricate dance of emotions and avoidance behaviors that often lead individuals to substance abuse. Through the lens of generational attitudes and the biochemistry of addiction, we dissect how dopamine's allure and the brain's quest for homeostasis can contribute to dependency on substances and activities alike. From the potency of emotional support to the delicate balance required in holistic healing, our conversation illuminates the importance of facing our feelings head-on for true mental health and personal growth. We are back – heute mit Chris Nanoo und einem Strauß voller bunter Geschichten. California Sober, oder was? Maybe, your friend announced they're not drinking anymore, or your sister's now “California Sober,” or maybe your entire office is participating in Dry January. It's not just you, going sober is the hot new thing, with 41% of Americans aged 18 to 35 saying they don't drink at all. Today, we explore the changes in drinking culture, in how we think about wellness and health, in how we socialize and spend our free time, and yes, changes in technology, that are converging to make America sober. Max interviews three Crooked Media producers about their relationship with alcohol and then talks to Dr. Edward Slingerland, an expert on humanity's relationship with alcohol, about why humans drink and what changed about alcohol and our world to make more people choose sobriety. And when she did do stuff, she played drums with The Blake Babies, Juliana Hatfield, Antenna, Gentleman Caller, Sunshine Boys, and Mysteries of Life among other 90s darlings.
