Henry Darger is one of the most profitable outsider artists out there. Unfortunately he didn't reap the benefit of that while he was alive, spending much of it in abject poverty. He was compelled to make and write art during the time he was not working as a janitor or dishwasher. His artwork dealt with themes of child abuse and violence, subjects very familiar with Darger when he was put in an asylum at the age of 12. Strange Country cohost Beth with special pinch (or pitch) hitter Terry discuss this artist and why work gets recognition after they're gone. Theme music: Big White Lie by A Cast of Thousands. When home feels like a war zone, our heroes in uniform are the ones rushing into the line of fire. Today, we have the privilege of hearing from one of these brave souls - Jeremy Vaughn, a state police officer who courageously faced a dangerous encounter on February 11th, 2022. He shares the chilling account of a high-speed pursuit that began with a confrontation at a gas station and culminated in Vaughn being shot in the neck by career criminal Caleb Elledge. Elledge cut off his ankle monitor 10 months prior and had violated parole three times leading up to the shooting. What happens when the people we depend on for our safety find their lives hanging by a thread? We explore that question as Jeremy's wife, Victoria, recounts the agonizing moment she learned of the incident and the steps she took to ensure their son's safety. Her perspective offers a stark look at the personal toll these incidents take on the families of law enforcement officers. But this conversation doesn't stop at personal experiences; it takes a deep dive into the larger issues plaguing the law enforcement landscape. The Vaughns' story is a testament to the spirit of resilience, but it also underscores the need for systemic changes. Jeremy passionately discusses his frustrations with a justice system that often fails to hold serious criminals accountable. He emphasizes the importance of rigorous training, the need for increased respect for police, and the role of faith in shaping his perspective on his job. What can we, as a community, do to support those who risk it all for our safety? What does it take to ensure justice is served? Join us as Jeremy and Victoria Vaughn share their insights on these crucial issues.Website: https://www.nodoubtaboutitpodcast.com/Twitter: @nodoubtpodcastFacebook: https://www.facebook.com/NoDoubtAboutItPod/Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/markronchettinm/?igshid=NTc4MTIwNjQ2YQ%3D%3D

Right about now, as you are dashing through the snow … or around town … you might be wishing upon a star for a way to hit pause. Maybe you could use a prayer for hope. Or a prayer for paying the bills. A prayer for when you're too busy. Or a prayer for going on a walk. Maybe a prayer for friendship. Or a prayer for giving thanks. Authors Audrey Elledge and Elizabeth Moore offer these and more in their newly released book titled “Liturgies for Hope: Sixty Prayers for the Highs, Lows, and Everything in Between.” These contemporary, comforting liturgies break through the noise of modern life to offer time-tested wisdom. Audrey works at SparkNotes and Elizabeth at Penguin Random House as these two friends both live in New York and serve with the Church of the City New York. They're on the show to share more about the liturgical tradition, this new collection of prayers and the hope that is available to you and me today. EPISODE SHOWNOTES: Read more. WHAT'S YOUR CAUSE? During the global pandemic two gifted women in NYC connected to write meaningful liturgies for their church. What began as an exercise in helping their local church community give voice to the feelings of pain and longing in their city as it became ground zero for this frightening pandemic,... Audrey Elledge and Elizabeth Moore co-authored a beautiful book together called Liturgies for Hope: Sixty Prayers for the Highs, the Lows, and Everything in Between. This book was born out of navigating life in New York City in 2020 while the city was known as the epicenter for the pandemic. But these words reach beyond quarantine and speak specifically into life today with words like, "A Liturgy For Those in Need of a Good Cry", "A Liturgy For a Lunch Break", and "A Liturgy For Those Who Haven't Belly Laughed Recently". Honestly for myself, listening to this conversation that we recorded a few weeks ago miraculously speaks into my today in a way I couldn't have imagined. You'll love this book – without a doubt – and you'll adore the authors after this conversation. Audrey Elledge and Elizabeth Moore started writing liturgies and prayers for their local church in New York City as a way of helping their friends and co-congregants deal with the fear and isolation of the COVID-19 lockdowns in their city. Those liturgies grew to become their new book, Liturgies for Hope: Sixty Prayers for the Highs, the Lows, and Everything in Between. In this episode, Audrey and Elizabeth talk with Jonathan Rogers about the connections between poetry, prayer, and liturgy, and the connections between creative work, friendship, and community.Support the show: https://therabbitroom.givingfuel.com/memberSee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
In this episode, Stacee and Doug interview longtime friend, Dr. Brenda Elledge, of Elledge Counseling Associates located in the DFW metroplex. This is Brenda's second visit to the Speak Out Loud podcast - you can find her first interview with Stacee on Doug on the topic of how/when to seek counseling at SOL episode #17. For several decades, Brenda and her team have guided thousands of people to find hope and help for their mental health and emotional lives. Brenda recently received her PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision and has a passion for helping others develop their skills to professionally serve those struggling with mental health. For many years, Dr. Elledge has also been an adjunct professor at her, Stacee and Doug's alma mater, Dallas Baptist University. Stacee and Doug visit with Brenda about the connections between mental health and mental illness and several key practices people can make a part of their lives to maintain and improve their mental health. When a mental health struggle turns into a crisis, Brenda shares the initial steps she takes to help patients and those who love them find hope when hope feels lost. Stacee and Doug share about the pain, confusion, and fear from their own experience of being in the depths of a mental health crisis and, from those hard-learned lessons, what do to, what not to do, and how, with the help of family, friends and professional counseling, hope and life could be found out of that pit. God has not promised a life free of trouble, but He does promise you can overcome whatever you or a loved one are facing through him. "Take heart! I have overcome the world!" (Jesus - John 16:33) To connect with Dr. Elledge and her practice, visit www.elledgecounseling.com To learn more about Stacee and Doug and their message of hope for those struggling with mental health and for those who love and support them, visit www.speakoutloud.me.
