Most of us, even if we're very active, are not moving our bodies the way nature designed them to move. We exercise plenty. We also sit plenty. We wear shoes that don't help keep our feet strong or our posture properly aligned. That can set the stage for aches, pains, and injuries, especially during this time of life when our joints are more vulnerable. This week we talk with movement coach Petra Fisher about the small daily adjustments we can make and exercises we can do to enhance mobility, decrease pain, and improve performance. Petra is a movement coach, body nerd and recovering lawyer. She is certified in Restorative Exercise, MovNat and Functional Range Conditioning. Petra's mission in life is to help women reconnect with their bodies so they have less pain, more joy & get to do more of what they love for the rest of their lives. In this episode, Chelsea and Kevin talk to the amazingly resilient, Aaron Baker about his recovery from a spinal cord injury that altered the course of his life and how we can all find a way forward despite the odds we're given. We also touch on what the writing process has been like for us, as three authors. About Aaron:  In 1999, as a professional motocross athlete, he sustained a career ending spinal cord injury. He fractured his cervical vertebrae 4, 5, and 6 rendering him a quadriplegic, paralyzed from the chin down. He was given a “one in a million” chance of every feeding himself again.  From the onset of his injury, he focused on rebuilding and redefining his life. He became a student of his mind and body, and has mastered a set of fundamental tools he uses and shares daily.  Today, he is a recovering quadriplegic husband, father, adventure athlete, author, orator, entrepreneur, and ambassador for spinal cord injury. He co-founded the Center of Restorative Exercise and represents Red Bull's non-profit charity-Wings For Life Foundation as a member of the Board of Directors, USA, and Chairman of the Ambassador Council. Have you ever created an app before?  The women I interview this week has done just that with her husband.  This is a whole different kind of business than any other I have featured before.  This is a power packed interview with a smart, passionate, high-energy entrepreneur.  Lean in and learn all about FitKrasia from Karina Ballantyne!  Karina was born to move. An athlete and dancer from as early as I can remember, exercise and movement has always been a source of joy and strength. After graduating from UCSB with a degree in Psychology I chose to pursue personal training as a career to share that joy with others. I moved to Santa Barbara to attend SBCC for two years to study in Exercise Physiology and become certified with the American College of Sports Medicine. I use Foundation Training, Pilates, and Restorative Exercise, to improve the health and wellbeing of my amazing clients. I believe movement is a critical component of optimum mental and emotional health.   As a movement educator, my focus is on whole body alignment restoration and habit renovations. As a coach I’ve learned that even the best modalities and techniques don't help people unless they actually do them - consistently! I wanted a smarter way to incentivize my clients (and myself) to create healthier habits for a long lifetime of fitness. In September my husband and I began creating a tool to help empower others to empower themselves. FitKrasia is the result. The game combines tried and tested techniques for positive behavior modification into an easy to play app. With FitKrasia we aim to help people create an environment and lifestyle for improved well-being.   W: www.fitkrasia.com E: karina@fitkrasia.com

If you've ever been told anything you wanted to achieve was impossible, whether your health, your wealth, career, family, sports, business, arts, or otherwise, then do we have the one-in-a-million show for you. Today I'll be talking with Aaron Baker, a true hero of mine, who also happens to be one of the most able-bodied recovering quadriplegic athletes, business owner's and inspiring people out there. Since his injury, he's walked 20 miles across death valley, ridden his bike not once, but twice across the country. Go-carted, mountain biked, and does more in a day that doctors say was ‘impossible' than most people will do in a lifetime. And that's what I want to talk with him about today. About believing in yourself no-matter what the experts tell you to achieve the impossible…or at least give it your best shot! We'll talk about getting started, overcoming odds, and going after your dreams, like there's no tomorrow. That plus we'll talk about pink training wheels, mountain-biking mammoth, go-karts and red bull, and why having your toe-nails painted all the colors of the rainbow, just may be the greatest gift in the world! Questions and Topics Include: Overcoming Odds How happy he was getting his first motorcycle at age 3 How he won Nationals and the World Championship How Ego and Confidence blended How he had the mindset to win, or the psychological edge over his competition How he was in the zone, space, flow, where he was almost invincible How seeing a quadriplegic friend completely unnerved him (who later became very successful with a family and working for Oracle) How his subconscious knew or was foreshadowing his accident What happened on the day of the accident Pre-race and new gear rituals he would do What happened while testing his racing motorcycle How did he keep breathing after he fell How he was peaceful with the experience and just allowed it to unfold. What was his Near Death Experience (NDE) while in the hospital How he's come back through gratitude How he was so fortunate to have a ferocious (fierce) mother that was on his side for an optimal healing environment How his mom brought in nature music for his health Why he wouldn't change a thing How he was allowing love to flow naturally Why all we can do with our lives is to share ourselves and ‘give it away” Why he had to stay so mindfully in the present, in the day-to-day, present moment How he was so mindful and present – which he needed in order to survive and then to heal How to stay in the moment (mindfulness) and work on one flicker or improvement at a time How having his toenails painted all the colors of the rainbow helped him turn inward, visualize and picture his toes moving again (how he used visualization and meditation to help himself to literally rewire himself!) How he used the law of attraction and visualization to start “rewiring and re-firing” How water helped him to heal (and how scary it was being put in the water the first time) How he was asking for more whenever he got treatments What a clean slate means, and what it truly means to move forward How the outlet for his energy became the workouts he was doing. What happened when he was 1 year into his recovery How he made it through when he wanted to end things… How he found a miracle partner in the healing process, Taylor Kevin Isaacs How they made it through financially How he did a tandem bike ride across the country with his mother. How he began pedaling his own bicycle!!! (And then did a SECOND bike-ride across the country, SOLO!!!) What is the trike he rode across the country How he debuted the trike at the LA marathon. How he walked solo 20 miles across Death Valley How much he's been at peace through the process How he's become an explorer of his potential, his body's potential, his mind's potential, and discovering the limits of his ability to create and make things happen – incredibly inspiring!!! Want to be more resilient? Jacqueline Saszi talks us through what it means to be more resilient, from properly managing your energy, bouncing back, and having the ability to absorb high levels of change while still being productive. Cool. Listen up, and then stop by Jacqueline’s site and contact Jacqueline to checkout your own resiliency profile! About Jacqueline Saszi After working in the adolescent drug and alcohol treatment field for 12 years and becoming very disillusioned, Jacqueline took a leap of faith and followed her heart from Phoenix, Arizona back to her hometown of Atlanta, Georgia. She took an administrative position with Linda Hoopes and Resilience Alliance, and thus began her journey into the world of organizational change and individual resilience. She became certified as a professional coach, as well as completing a certification as a Personal Resilience Practitioner in 2010. In 2011, at the age of 35, she found myself with a back injury that left her disabled for months. In order to avoid major surgery, she received treatment from chiropractors and various bodyworkers, and eventually found Katy Bowman and Nutritious Movement™. After studying with Katy for 3+ years both online and in person, she completed the Restorative Exercise Specialist/Certified Personal Trainer Certification. With her training and experience working with young people and their families, her personal commitment to health and wellness, and her training and education, she was able to start her own business and do work that she was passionate about: consulting and coaching with individuals and organizations to guide them through transition and uncertainty, and working with people to improve their physical health using Restorative Exercise and natural movement.
