This week my guest is biomechanist Katy Bowman, author of twelve–count ‘em, twelve–books that explore how to improve health and boost well-being through movement, including the best-selling “Move Your DNA,” as well as her newest, “I Know I Should Exercise, But….” Her back catalog includes “My Perfect Movement Plan,” “Rethink Your Position,” “Movement Matters,” “Dynamic Aging,” “Grow Wild,” “Simple Steps to Foot Pain Relief,” “Diastasis Recti,” “Don't Just Sit There,” “Whole Body Barefoot,” and “Alignment Matters.” In fact, Katy has published so many books that she founded her own independent press, Uphill Books. She has also been named one of Maria Shriver's Architects of Change for her work to change the way we move and understand our need for movement, and is the founder of the movement education company Nutritious Movement, based in Washington state, where she lives. (This episode is a re-broadcast, in honor of the release of “I Know I Should Exercise, But…”) We covered: - How writing a book is really an exercise in processing everything she's learned for herself (in addition to being a way to communicate information) - Finding the kind of writing that feels like a downhill flow instead of an uphill slog - Matching your output to your phase of life - How to find the quiet you need to write in a noisy world - Balancing the necessity and allure of technology with a hunger for real-world, in person, nourishing experiences (what she calls “nutrient-dense” experiences) - How she works movement into her writing process - How walking boosts creativity - How she makes the most of her mornings (and why she doesn't have coffee until she's done this one thing each morning) Visit Katy at nutritiousmovement.com or follow her on Instagram @nutritiousmovement. Katy Bowman: Integrate Movement Into Daily Life, And Don't Overdo Your Fitness Efforts!

It is time for more Katy Bowman! Katy is one of my favorite educators in the health and fitness scene and her Nutritious Movement movement is so awesome and has such a great following (follow her on Instagram (@nutritiousmovement) to see her thoughtful commentary and the beautiful, Earth-based lifestyle she is living out there on the Washington peninsula). This is a very educational episode as Katy illustrates the importance of a movement-oriented lifestyle separate and distinct from one's fitness regimen—so integrating movement into all aspects of your day, not just for one designated block of time. Katy is also a book writing machine with a new book, My Perfect Movement Plan: The Move Your DNA All Day Workbook. This is an unusual book because it is formatted like a journal, asking you to participate in the process and further connect with the message. Instead of a simple Q&A about her book talking points, this episode is a thoughtful conversation about the impact movement and fitness can have on the human body. You will learn why athletic training can often be counterproductive to health, and how to integrate movement into your daily life in a graceful and sustainable way. It's not a huge task, (but it might be to get your butt to the gym and get in shape) and it has a massively beneficial impact on your health.  Katy Bowman, M.S. is a biomechanist, bestselling author, and founder of Nutritious Movement. She has written many books on the importance of a diverse movement diet including Move Your DNA, Rethink Your Position, Whole Body Barefoot, and her latest My Perfect Movement Plan: The Move Your DNA All Day Workbook. Follow her on Instagram @NutritiousMovement   TIMESTAMPS: How does one integrate movement into daily life? Even athletes need to get way better at having a more movement-oriented lifestyle. [00:51] Most casual endurance athletes are overdoing it to the extreme excess and the extreme detriment to their overall general health. [7:04] Cardio, strength, and flexibility should all be packaged together. [12:03] By watching the Paralympics, people will be inspired to improve their exercise habits. [13:34] People easily lose motivation like when they used COVID as an excuse of why they got out of shape. [18:32] Sometimes we are strong in only one narrow area of fitness rather than all around fitness. What movements are functional for an average human? [21:34] It really is quite easy to integrate movement into your lifestyle. Do squats in line at the taco truck, anyone? [27:48] The fitness industry is pervasive.  You are told you must buy exercise equipment and dietary supplements when maybe you can get what you need at home. [29:30] Psychologists are exploring the reasons or excuses people have for not being more active. [33:10] There seems to be a focus on athleticism rather than just recognize movement as important. [36:43] Living in the digital age, we find ourselves constantly entertained and connected which compromises movement. {48:19] Life is busy.  It is so important to walk, walk, walk. A few months ago my daughter had a routine checkup at the doctor, who asked how much screen time she gets in a day (which is more than typical recommendations but way less time than children spend sitting in school). The doctor told her (but really she told me): “You should get more exercise.” Carys isn't a team sports kind of person.  She doesn't love hiking, and she only really likes biking when friends are with us. Something about the ‘get more exercise' advice didn't sit quite right with me, but I couldn't put my finger on why. Then I found Katy Bowman's work and suddenly it all made sense. Katy points out that movement and exercise are not the same thing. Even if we aren't getting enough exercise, what we need far more than exercise is movement. In this episode, we discuss questions like: What, exactly, is movement? What does it mean for our children to move…and how about us? How do we get more of it when our days are already so full?  (I know I thought that, but I've found ways to incorporate a daily stretching routine without taking any time away from anything else I do.  We discuss how in the episode!) What children learn through movement

In fact one of our first episodes on this podcast was actually a whole episode dedicated to exploring the concept of movement nutrition and obviously draws on Katy's work heavily, and so that podcast would pair very well with this one - so if you're keen to check that out first or straight after, it is all the way down in Season 1 Episode 3. But throughout this episode, we discuss the broader concept of biomechanics, we delve into the difference between posture and alignment and explore how the way we move can influence how we feel and contribute to our experience of pain and injury. We also delve into some key topics from Katy's new book to help you build more awareness around your own alignment, movement and mindset. There's obviously a huge amount that we didn't get to cover, as the book goes into a really impressive amount of detail while still being really accessible to read and having read it back to front myself I can very honestly highly recommend it. So I really enjoyed this conversation with Katy, I got a lot out of it myself and I know you will too - if you do find value in it, please let us know by leaving us a review on your podcast app and help us spread the message by sharing it out with family and friends. This week we're talking about Nutritious Movement, the brainchild of our brilliant friend, biomechanist, fitness expert, and best-selling author Katy Bowman. Katy's term "nutritious movement" refers to the type of movement that nourishes, educates, shapes, energizes, and repairs us in ways that support optimal health and vitality. And, as Katy explains during the conversation, that does not describe most conventional fitness approaches. So here, Pilar talks with Katy about a great many science-y things very few of us have ever learned about movement and exercise, including some key differences between the two. Katy shares some misconceptions most of us hold about what good fitness constitutes and requires, and she offers up some wonderfully simple, effective, and sustainable strategies for improving your body's physical form and function. We wrap up with a few experiments to help you discover what nutritious movement feels like and how you can easily enjoy more of it, starting today. Bestselling author, speaker, and a leader in the Movement movement, biomechanist Katy Bowman has been changing the way we move and think about our need for movement. Her eight books, including the groundbreaking “Move Your DNA” and “Movement Matters” have been translated into more than a dozen languages worldwide. Bowman teaches movement globally and speaks about sedentarism and movement ecology to academic and scientific audiences. Her work has been featured in diverse media such as the Today Show, CBC Radio One, the Seattle Times, and Good Housekeeping. One of Maria Shriver's “Architects of Change” and an America Walks “Woman of the Walking Movement”, Katy has worked with companies like Patagonia, Nike and Google as well as a wide range of non-profits and other communities, sharing her “move more, move more body parts, move more for what you need” message.  Her movement education company, Nutritious Movement, is based in Washington State, where she lives with her family. In our conversation we talk about form, feet, injuries, and Jess Finley's ‘hooky' acromion process (it's part of your shoulder). When you use swords, or do any other sport, the movements – or lack of – that you do all of the rest of the time when you are not doing swords create your ability to move freely and effectively with a sword in your hand. What is your body doing when it is not doing swords? We mention Ruth Goodman's book, How to be a Tudor. You can find out more here: https://www.penguin.co.uk/books/287/287072/how-to-be-a-tudor/9780241973714.html and listen to our podcast episode here: https://guywindsor.net/2021/04/fire-and-cauldrons-episode44/ If the section on barefoot shoes inspires you, check out Freet shoes https://freetbarefoot.com Use this code at checkout: THESWORDGUY10 to get 10% off- and if you do, I'll also get a small commission. Yay! The author mentioned when we are talking about Finland is Robert Holdstock, the Mythago Wood series. We also discuss sedentary culture, what it's doing to us and our kids, and how we might improve our environment to make movement more likely. Human movement is at an all-time low and our children are currently facing both a movement and nature deficiency, with physical, mental and environmental consequences.  The good news is, while the problem feels massive, the solution is quite simple…and fun! Katy's forthcoming book, “Grow Wild: The Whole-Child, Whole-Family, Nature-Rich Guide to Moving More” is out in the UK on 24th June, SRP £24.99, published by Propriometrics Press; distributed by Chelsea Green Publishing. “Movement is a giant circle of a diagram, it's any time you change the shape of your body or even the tissues within your body. Exercise is a specific type of movement… you do it to a mode, or a specific time frame… I am just trying to get people to think differently as we are so sedentary culturally that to exercise every day seems like a tone of movement… but we really require a tremendous amount more than just 1 hour a day and it really needs to be distributed better throughout the day.”Why you might ask is this necessary? To be able to use our bodies in the future! To be physically fit enough to be able to do the tasks we do now in the future. “You have to water your garden so it continues to produce”, by continuously moving in different dynamic ways throughout the day “you nourish your tissues”.This week we had the pleasure of speaking to bio-mechanist Katy Bowman, bestselling author, speaker, and a leader in the Movement movement. Did you know that your body needs movement as much as you need food? In this episode of the Align Podcast, biomechanist and movement guru Katy Bowman explains what human movement truly means, why it affects your quality of life, and how to get yourself to move more often and effectively in a sedentary world that offers limitless reasons to sit on hours.  What's really interesting to know is that it's not enough that you exercise or move your body once in a while; Katy says you should be moving in ways that optimize ALL parts of your body. Yes, there's actually a "dosage" of movement required for different body parts. It seems complex, but it's totally achievable if you introduce even small changes in your routine. Whether you're working in front of the computer or glued to the TV screen, there are easy ways you can secure that daily dose of healthy movement. Learn more as Katy and I delve deep into that in this educational talk. Learn more at nutritiousmovement.com.   One of my favorite things to do is observe people in the grocery store or airport.  How do their hips move?  Is their head way out in front of their body?  Are they looking down? Falling forward?  I am victim to my own scrutiny as well.  What is my posture at the end of a marathon or triathlon?  How to do I stand when giving a talk or at the counter preparing a meal? What hurts or is stiff?  Can I do movements that I did as a younger person.  How do I move my body throughout my day or on the weekends doing gardening or yardwork? Are these changes a reflection of aging muscles or even deeper changes within our own cellular structure.  How might we affect aging by becoming more mobile? Katy and I discuss these things and more.  She is a wealth of knowledge and ideas that I believe can help you and your family.  Enjoy the interview.  Links to her website, podcast, and books are listed below.  Check out our website at doctordulaney.com and email me at jami@doctordulaney.com   https://drive.google.com/file/d/1nS9FTnxDhaZZBGjAPOKG6-PY31BcA3w1/view?usp=sharing https://www.facebook.com/NutritiousMovement https://www.instagram.com/nutritiousmovement/ https://www.nutritiousmovement.com/product/dynamic-aging-simple-exercises-for-whole-body-mobility/ https://www.amazon.com/Plant-based-Wellness-Cookbook-Generations-Cooking/dp/1733967702/ref=sr_1_3?crid=1U4J4U0SZUXUF&dchild=1&keywords=plant+based+wellness+cookbook&qid=1621083696&sprefix=plant+based+well%2Caps%2C173&sr=8-3

When you use swords, or do any other sport, the movements - or lack of - that you do all of the rest of the time when you are not doing swords create your ability to move freely and effectively with a sword in your hand. What is your body doing when it is not doing swords? We mention Ruth Goodman's book, How to be a Tudor. You guyyyyyyys. This is my podcast fan girl moment. When I first started scheming the idea of creating a podcast, Katy Bowman was at the top of my mental interview dream sheet. I’d recently found her work with everything I experienced with Diastasis Recti and was a huge fan. I’d read two of her books, listened to countless podcast interviews with her, and wanted to soak up as much knowledge as possible. From her work, I also discovered Jill Miller. The two of them have similar philosophies and teaching styles, but each have a superhuman amount of knowledge and wisdom to share. They collaborated to create the Walking Well program and make quite a powerhouse team together. AND they’re on the podcast this week!! Needless to say, when I recorded this interview with them, I was super nervous. I was trying to keep it together but couldn’t help but feel the creeping dread of imposter syndrome. They’re on another planet when it comes to movement and how the body operates and as an already awkward person, I felt like a bit of a goober interviewing them. BUT I did it! And they shared so many amazing tips and bits of advice in this episode. It’s one of my favorite *beefy* podcast episodes and I hope you enjoy hearing from them as much as I did. 065: Walking for fitness and movement longevity with Katy Bowman and Jill Miller Here’s what we talk about: - Walking as a personal fitness program as well as a family-friendly 'move more' activity. The importance of walking, especially for people who tend to choose higher impact activities.  - The importance of alignment while carrying kids and/or their gear. What are the best ways to manage that?  - Any tips to encourage kids to walk with you and enjoy it? - Why do some very fit people struggle with long walks? It could be because of the law of specificity in exercise, because of poor alignment, weak feet on strong bodies) - Why is walking so good for postpartum bodies? - And a Q & A segment from those of you who chimed in on Instagram (how many steps should we aim for each day, how to get back into yoga postpartum, tips for healing plantar fasciitis while remaining active)   Here’s a bit about Katy and Jill if you aren’t familiar with their work: Katy Bowman, M.S., is a biomechanist, a movement educator, the creator of Nutritious Movement and the award-winning author of many books, including “Move Your DNA” and “Dynamic Aging”. An America Walks “Woman of the Walking Movement”, Bowman consults on educational and living space design to encourage movement-rich habitats. She has worked with companies like Patagonia as well as non-profits to ensure diverse socioeconomic groups benefit from her “move more, move more of your parts, move more in your life” message.  Her site is www.nutritiousmovement.com.  Jill Miller, C-IAYT, ERYT is the cofounder of Tune Up Fitness Worldwide, creator of the self-care fitness formats Yoga Tune Up and The Roll Model Method and author of the best-selling book on myofascial release “The Roll Model”. With more than 30 years of study in anatomy and movement, Miller has developed fitness programming for major gym chains such as Equinox, 24 Hour Fitness and Yoga Works, as well as Fortune 500 corporate clients and professional sports teams. She is recognized worldwide as a pioneer in forging relevant links between the worlds of fitness, yoga, massage, athletics and pain management. If you are experiencing Pandemic Stress, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) can help! This is a stressful time for most of us; the mental health aftermath of a pandemic is sometimes called a "second pandemic" because of the rise of depression, anxiety, and PTSD. No wonder so many of us are exhausted! In this podcast episode, co-hosts Diana Hill and Debbie Sorensen discuss Pandemic Stress and give examples of how they use ACT practices themselves, as they experience emotional ups and downs. We talk a lot about nutrient density and diversity on this podcast. Every food has a unique nutrient profile, and when we get in food ruts and eat the same thing every day, our nutrition suffers. The same thing happens with movement. Modern life limits the way we move our bodies, but then chronic illness can limit it even more. This creates a vicious cycle. How do we break free and expand our ability to move, enhancing our health at the same time? My guest is Katy Bowman, a biomechanist, teacher, speaker, and author. She's written 8 books, including the bestselling Move Your DNA, which has been translated into more than a dozen languages.

Welcome back to Embodied Curiosity! Today’s episode is with my friend Keith from Elements Embodied. Keith is on a quest to be more fully human. This quest led him from the Great Lakes to Germany and then to the pacific northwest, where he is now feeling at home on the West Coast. A certified yoga teacher, a trained wilderness guide, and seasoned musician, Keith combines his unique talents and interests into immersive experiences that bring people into their whole selves – more aware, more connected, and more alive. Keith is passionate about the movement arts and experiencing the full range of motion in this human form. Through the interdisciplinary arts of music, movement, and the medicine of nature connection, he believes we can heal ourselves, our communities, and the natural world. In this episode, we catch up and discuss the big topic on everyone’s mind, COVID 19. We are right in the middle of a global pandemic, and Keith and I discuss what has been coming up for us. We talk about our hopes for the future, homesteading, nature connection and education reform. Some of these topics are difficult  to discuss, and it’s a challenging time for many right now. Hello! Welcome to Episode 17 and I’m thrilled to share with you today’s conversation! I had the opportunity to talk with Katy Bowman of Nutritious Movement. If you haven’t heard of her, you’re in for a treat!   I originally found Katy’s work about 8-9 years ago. I found her through one of her blog posts about squatting. The way she approached movement in a big picture way really resonated with me. But I didn’t think a lot of it, it was back when everyone was blogging and I was reading lots of different blogs. I came back to her work a couple of years later when I was feeling very stuck with my own diastasis recti and pelvic organ prolapse, and I couldn’t find answers that made sense to me and what was happening to my body.

Our cells, including brain cells, are influenced by movement mechanics.  Our guest today is a leader in movement mechanics and aging.  Katy is part biomechanist, part science communicator, and FULL-time mover.  Katy Bowman has educated hundreds of thousands of people on the role movement plays in the body and in the world.  She is a prolific author of many books and other media outlets.  She directs the Nutritious Movement Center in the Pacific Northwest and travels around the world teaching Nutritious Movement™ Katy explains "Nutritious Movement" - the idea that our cells are influenced by mechano-transduction (AKA movement mechanics or the "mechanome"). Movement is not really the same thing as exercise as exercise is more of a sub-category of movement. Katy foresees the day that we will know how individual movements are good for specific aspects of health, similar to how we understand specific micro and macro-nutrients are important for health (eg fats, carbohydrates and various vitamins and minerals). We can open up way more opportunities for people to figure out how movement works if we move beyond thinking about physical activity as exercise alone. For example, most people arrange their homes so things are easy to get to (reducing our movements) and so it’s easy to find a place to sit. And those seating options keep us in the same geometry whether it’s the dining chair, sofa or toilet. How can we create more movement opportunities in the home? Katy may suggest things like putting the tea bags on a higher or lower shelf than the mugs so we have to squat or reach for them. Clear an inviting space so one can sit on the floor and stretch. Add a Squatty Potty, etc. Katy introduces us to some of the co-authors in her book, Dynamic Aging, who are all now in their 70s and 80s and have had success with Katy's movement methodologies over the last decade or so. She challenges cultural norms of how habit and sedentarism give rise to "inevitable" aches and pains of aging. It requires an inventory of all the aspects of our lives that impact how and where we move. Katy starts with how people get dressed, even what clothing we are wearing may restrict our ability to move. Note, footwear is a big deal! Shoes matter. Our lives require changes in "shape" and "load." Katy explains what it means to change up things in these domains of movement. She elucidates how we can set up our natural state environments like homes and offices to adapt and thrive in our aging bodies and in our daily tasks. We briefly discuss the roles of stress and trauma on our bodies and how this relates to mechanotransduction and movement mechanics. Katy recalls her involvement in Move for Minds seminar last year (2017) and we focus the last part of our conversation on brain health. Why is it so tough for us modern humans to take good care of ourselves? We created all of this technology to make life easier on our muscles, bones, and joints—so why do these core components of our bodies now seem to make us suffer more than ever before? For episode 33 of the Good Life Revival Podcast, I had the pleasure of speaking with biomechanist and movement ecologist Katy Bowman, who likely needs no introduction among my audience but here goes anyway. Katy is a prolific writer, speaker and podcaster on the topics of natural movement and human physiology from a cross-cultural perspective; she’s a serious research scientist with the rare skill of being able to translate often esoteric scientific jargon into clear, engaging, actionable English. Through her work in the field of biomechanics, she has become well acquainted with the ways that our bodies have been warped and reshaped by this strange sedentary zoo we call civilization. She wants to help you and me feel better from day to day, and reclaim as much of our innate human animal potential as possible by educating us on the ins and outs of “nutritious movement.” Katy and I had a fascinating and insightful conversation, exploring why a healthy relationship with our bodies is about so much more than diet and exercise alone. She also offered some really useful advice for farmers and gardeners like me to help avoid a “monocrop of movement” while playing in the dirt. Katy’s book ‘Move Your DNA’ is my pick for February in our ongoing book club series – stick around to the end of the episode for a discount code to save 20% when ordering through her website. They also talk about the massive benefits of spending more time outdoors and why Katy is lobbying for outdoor exposure to be classified as a nutrient. I’m excited to say that Katy Bowman is here today! In fact I think she’s the most requested guest to date, so many of you listening will be especially interested in today’s episode. Katy is the movement mastermind behind the award-winning blog and podcast Nutritious Movement (formerly Katy Says) that reaches thousands of people every month. She’s blogged for 10 years on the topic of movement and its importance to health. Along the way she also found time to author 8 books, including the best-selling Move Your DNA and Movement Matters. A biomechanist by training, Katy pioneers research on the effects of our modern sedentary culture and the profound potential of human movement. She’s convinced me that movement can be just as nutritious as food … and she’s not just talking about getting to the gym. To find out what she is talking about, stick around! Katy Bowman on Nutritious Movement If you’ve been around my blog, you may have noticed I have some strong feelings on eating real, nutritious foods and avoiding empty, toxic ones like sugar and processed oils. Well the way I feel about sugar and processed foods is the way Katy Bowman feels about sitting still. Deprive your body of its daily dose of movement, she says, and it’s just as bad as not eating your vegetables. The amazing part is that regular exercise doesn’t even undo the effects of sitting for long hours in a desk chair or on your couch. Research shows that too much sitting can lead not only to obesity but higher rates of cancer, cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. It can even shorten our life span. So what’s a healthy mom to do? Katy Bowman lays it all out, step-by-step. She explains exactly what we can do about this cultural problem and how to meet our body’s movement quota in a sedentary world. In This Episode You’ll Learn why we’re not getting enough “Vitamin Squat” … and why it’s so important we don’t go without it what movement can do for the body, and how to get more of it the reason why not many of us adults are very good at squatting (and why my toddler is pro!) why Katy has very little furniture in her house … yes, not even a couch where kegels fall short … and what to do for the pelvic floor instead the difference between stationary and sedentary ways to get out of our comfort zone and try new movement (even when everyone else is just sitting around) modifications to help you recover the ability to squat “nutritious” ways to move after having a baby how to create the ideal dynamic work space the relationship between diastasis recti and pelvic floor issues … and how to fix it the cool way her family does dinner and breakfast pic

In today’s poggie Brooke speaks with Katy Bowman, a biomechanist, founder of Nutritious Movement and all-round activity advocate, about the curse of convenience in modern life and what it is costing us in terms of movement, the food we eat, our health, our relationships and the larger structure of our society in general. They also talk about the infiltration of technology into the lives of both adults and kids, as well as some really practical ways of lessening the impact technology has on our days, and how to deal with the inevitable complaints from kids (and maybe some adults) when they’re forced outside. They also talk about the massive benefits of spending more time outdoors and why Katy is lobbying for outdoor exposure to be classified as a nutrient. Katy shares her family’s journey towards minimalism and why it began with letting go of their couch, and how the root of their simplification lies in a desire for more movement rather than less stuff.   Episode 24 of All About Fitness features author and founder of Nutritious Movement, Katy Bowman. This was a first for All About Fitness, the interview was scheduled through a publicist; and to be completely honest, before receiving her book, Move Your DNA, I had not heard of Katy Bowman, but the concepts discussed in her writing were familiar to me as a fitness educator who teaches that exercise is a function of movement. In a cool synchronicity, I interviewed Jen Sinkler before I interviewed Katy; when I was editing our podcast I realized that Jen had made a specific reference to Katy’s work.     Katy is a health and wellness educator who promotes the concept that rather than limiting ourselves to specific types of exercise that we should focus more on participating in all types of movement. We often think of physical activity as a construct of a specific activity like flexibility, cardio exercise or resistance training; through her blog, books and podcast - Katy Says, Katy helps people to focus on improving movement literacy by taking every opportunity to be as physically active as possible, which can greatly enhance the overall quality of life. A biomechanist by education, Katy uses scientific knowledge combined with real-world practicality to reshape the concept of physical activity into holistic, natural movements as opposed to a series of isolated, discrete joint motions. Katy’s books include: Move Your DNA, Whole Body Barefoot and the recently released Movement Matters.      In our conversation today we focus on why it is important to think about enhancing movement through ALL types of physical activity. Research shows that people who move throughout the day are healthier than people who are stuck in the same position. You’ll hear Katy use the term Captive Humans - to describe how the shape of our body becomes dictated by the limited scope of movements we perform throughout our daily lives. On this episode you'll learn why it’s more important to focus on complete movement literacy, why the modern concept of exercise may actually be limiting how much we move and what you can do to be more physically active throughout your day.      Please visit the sponsors of All About Fitness:   ActivMotion Bar Here is an example of the ActivMotion Bar in action   Terra Core by Vicore Fitness Use product code AAF to save 20% on the purchase of a Terra Core   SKLZ Fitness Products Use product code PM30 to save 30% on your next purchase Check out SKLZ products in action HERE   Connect with Pete McCall: Instagram: @PeteMcCall_fitness Twitter: @PeteMc_fitness pete@petemccallfitness.com

Do you exercise? If so, have you ever considered the fact that your distant ancestors probably didn't? Natural-living human beings of the past didn't need to 'exercise,' because their day to day lifestyle likely included enough natural movement to keep them fit and healthy. They also managed to avoid so many of the chronic health problems and dysfunctional physical limitations that we now face as a civilization.  As we have devolved into our current sedentary lifestyle, most of us have worked hard to eliminate and outsource as much movement as possible. Meaning, we have come to the point that our normal bodily movement is so limited that we have to take breaks from our daily routine to squeeze in an allotted time to move around. And this moving around is what we now call exercise.  But what if there was a way to build habits of functional movement into our regular activities, without having to make a special appointment at a gym, or with a trainer? In this episode with natural movement pioneer and author Katy Bowman, we learn how to re-contextualise how we use our bodies, and how to incorporate movement as the crucial bodily nutrient that nature designed it to be.  By learning how to avoid many familiar, yet damaging fitness routines, and turning your workspace and home into a movement gym, you'll see your body and how it is meant to move and operate from a whole new perspective.  Katy's message serves as a powerfully simple, and practical approach to functional movement and mobility. This is a perfect episode to share with your gym rat friends, and couch potatoes alike. We all need to move it, or we'll lose it. But moving it the way it’s meant to move is the only way to create lasting health and fitness.  Episode Breakdown What is the purpose and intention for building a movement practice? What movement practice can do for us that a gym can’t? The different between mobility and flexibility Fashion vs comfort: can we have one without sacrificing the other? We’ve dipped our toes in the water before, but now let’s dive in and define “Junk Food Movement” in the way that we use it when defining Nutritious Movement. This episode is a satisfying culmination of our previous discussions on Junk Food Movement—and will leave you with the tools and understanding to be a more critical thinker when it comes to your movement diet.

Whole Guidance Podcast: Nutrition | Fitness | Happiness | Mindset | Ancestral Health | Holistic Wellness

In this podcast I'll be exploring Movement: I'll explain how movement is one of the most essential nutrients for your body I'll talk about how a lack of movement affects your health Finally, I'll talk about the different types of movement that your body expects and how to increase your consumption of real movement nutrition CLICK HERE TO LEARN WHAT ARE THE BEST FOODS TO GET YOU LEAN Movement is life. Life is movement. If you're not moving you're not living. Movement nourishes your body and mind. Your body and mind are actually one and the same. Clinical Professor of Psychiatry Dr Dan Siegel defines the mind as the following: "The mind is an embodied process that regulates the flow of energy and information." Your mind is embodied within your entire being, your whole body, cultivating the many different life processes happening within. From your left pinky toe to your right ear lob. Whenever I refer to your body I'm also referring to your mind and vice versa. So you can think of your body and mind as one entity called the bodymind. Movement then moves not only the body, but the mind your entire bodymind. Movement acts as a pump. Every time you move you contract and relax different muscles in your body and this process of restriction and expansion within each muscle acts like a pump. These pumps move water, blood, oxygen, nutrients, energy and information throughout your body. No pumping action means no nutrition for your cells. Your lymphatic system is your waste management system and does not have a pump of its own as does your circulatory system that has the heart as a pump. Lymph fluid in your lymphatic system only moves when you move. If you don't move then all that toxic waste just sits around in your lymphatic system and doesn't get into your bloodstream where it can be processed for detoxification and elimination. Overtime this causes a toxic buildup in your body and when you do decide to move this will eventually overwhelm your detoxification organs such as your liver, skin, lungs, and kidneys. You must get into the groove and move in order to transport nutrients to where they are needed the most inside of your cells and in order to transport and eliminate waste out of your body. If you're not moving and remain in one position for long periods of time and I'm not just talking about sitting, this applies to any long held position standing, kneeling, then your cells begin to starve due to a lack of nutrition and you also create a buildup of waste. One of the symptoms you will experience due to a lack of movement is tiredness and low energy. When your cells do not receive the nutrients, energy and information that they need to function your metabolism begins to slow down, your bodymind begins to slow down because it's low on nutrition and energy. Even though the energy is there inside your body your lack of movement is not transporting that energy to where it's needed the most. Not only does a lack of movement cause you to feel tired, but because the nutrients aren't being transported to vital organs in your body such as your gut, heart, and brain your bodymind begins to lose focus and attention and you also begin to experience unstable mood swings and can begin to feel irritable. Having unstable energy levels isn't just due to a lack of nutrients reaching your cells, but also due to your inability to handle carbohydrate and sugar. Eating excess carbs and sugar creates many issues in the body including having unstable levels of blood sugar. So while you may experience an energy high at first after a carb-heavy meal or snack as the sugar rushes throughout your bloodstream it's not too long before your energy comes crashing down as all that sugar gets quickly burnt up for energy and any excess sugar gets put into storage and then you begin to feel hungry again.

I am so excited to share this interview with Katy Bowman today! As a prolific author, biomechanist, and founder of the Nutritious Movement movement, Katy is a real thought-leader who is passionate about teaching people about the power of natural movement and the importance of integrating movement into our lifestyle. Katy has authored books like Move Your DNA and Movement Matters, and now has a new book out called Grow Wild, about the challenge parents these days have when it comes to raising children in today's modern world in a natural manner. Even when you take the pandemic out of the equation, it's undeniable that the reality of our (pre-Covid) modern world was one that was extremely supportive of a digitally dominant and also highly sedentary lifestyle. “This is the most sedentary group of humans in history,” Katy comments. But even though the world we live in makes it super easy to be lazy, there are still many practical methods we can all utilize to ensure that we are getting enough movement. In this episode, Katie shares these simple, but highly effective actionable steps you can take to organize your life, daily routine, and home environment in a manner that helps you integrate movement in a more natural way. You'll learn fascinating information about the physiology of the human body that will completely shift your perspective on movement and parenting (and also the strong connection between the two) especially when she highlights how “our ideas of safety and not moving go hand in hand.”  Katy also breaks down why we require a wide variety of movements to be able to maximize bone density, and explains the unique importance of movement for children so certain diseases do not show up later on (did you know that  osteoporosis is actually a juvenile disease that manifests in later years?). She also reveals that you can actually dress your children in a way that either “helps or hinders their movement” and that one unfortunate side effect of parents hindering their children's movement in an “effort to keep them safe” is that they are now less able to assess risk and have a good understanding of how to assess their self. Katy also explains the value of setting aside time to do longform investigations into the subjects that interest you most, and the reason why she describes longform reading and/or investment as an important skill to cultivate. You will also learn about the danger of this “pandemic of myopia” we are currently in, and why “the environment is the problem” (Katy organized her book by environment for a reason). You'll also learn why Katy says that there are “many nutrients to be found in movement” as well as how to set up your home environment and lifestyle habits for success in a practical way. “This isn't about moving into a cave and wearing a loincloth,” Katy says, but about making “really small changes.”TIMESTAMPS:Rather than moving, we are living in a crazy sedentary lifestyle. [01:45]Katy moved from urban life to a much more traditional lifestyle. [05:30]Her children are being exposed to nature in a big way. [11:06]Kids need nutritious food, community, and lots of movement. The health of a child is really setting up that adult for what they can experience later on. [14:46]Everything that we use is hyper-stimulating, like a sugar addiction. [19:33]The developing body needs the most movement, and it's more than total movement. [22:29]If parents don't have the opportunity to bring to their family this ideal rural life, what can they do to expose their kids to nature in a healthy growing way? [26:20]Think outside the chair. There is a relationship between culture and posture and movement overall. [33:23]There are many “don't move” messages in our culture. The side effect of not letting our children move to keep them “safe” has also made them unable to assess risk. [36:30]Kids have a different makeup in that some just have to move and others more easily can be still. [39:26]Because of the pandemic, people have had to find other ways of moving. [49:15]Kids need to learn to walk. From the beginning they have been on wheels: strollers, trikes, bikes, and in carpools. [51:08]Transitioning is difficult. [55:18]The launch party for her book is going to be “book walk.” [59:52]   LINKS:Brad Kearns.comBrad's Shopping PageGrow WildNutritious MovementKaty BowmanJoin Brad for more fun on: Instagram: @bradkearns1Facebook: @bradkearnsjumphighTwitter: @bradleykearnsYouTube: @BradKearnsWe appreciate all feedback, and questions for Q&A shows, emailed to getoveryourselfpodcast@gmail.com.
