She discusses her personal journey with fascia-focused methods, including self-massage and Yoga Tune Up, and questions commonly held beliefs about fascia adaptation from exercise. Laurel critiques the metaphorical narratives versus physiological mechanisms, examining the roles of muscle, tendon, and the nervous system in recovery and training. Overstretching, underrepresentation, and pressure from every direction… What's really happening behind the scenes in competitive dance? John Corella sits down with Sharmila Mitra, a longtime friend and respected voice in the dance world. She's a competitive dance teacher, studio owner, and a Pilates and Gyrotonic instructor who's helped dancers heal, grow, and stay in the game for the long run. She's also the author of “The Power of Intention for Dancers,” and her story is one many in the industry will recognize: pushed hard, stretched beyond her limits, and told her work was “too ethnic” to compete. John and Sharmila dig into some hard truths: Is a dancer's flexibility more important than their physical safety? How do we stop celebrating movement that could be damaging our joints for life? Sharmila shares how overstretching as a young dancer led to long-term injuries and why she's passionate about giving today's dancers a better way forward. The two also talk about how Pilates, intention-setting, and proper cross-training can shift the entire experience of competitive dance. Can winning mean more than just a trophy? What if dancers were encouraged to check in with their bodies, not ignore what hurts? This episode is a must-listen for teachers, parents, and dancers alike, especially anyone who's ever questioned the way things have always been done. You'll walk away with a fresh perspective, a few strong opinions, and maybe a little more compassion for the kid struggling through warm-up. My guest for the 50th episode is Smadar Goshen, a choreographer, dancer, a certified Gaga teacher and a Gyrotonic & Gyrokinesis trainer and teacher's trainer. Smadar completed her B.A in dance and M.A in choreography at the Jerusalem Academy for Music and Dance. Since 2011 her pieces are performed on various platforms worldwide. In the yearbook of magazine tanz 2023, She was honoured as one of the 10 promising choreographers & dance pioneers in Germany. Since 2024 she is supported by the state capital Stuttgart and the Landesverband Freie Tanz-und Theaterschaffende Baden-Wuerttemberg. In our conversation, we explored the tension between personal identity and artistic expression, the role of the body in processing memory and trauma, and the impact of grief on creativity. We talked about the ways in which the body carries memory and trauma and about how Smadar's artistic practice engages with personal and historical narratives. We talked about the role of dance as a channel for transformation and about the difference between performing to be seen and performing as a medium for something larger. We talked about the instinct to resist being absorbed into a collective identity and about how that tension informs Smadar's work. We talked about Jewish identity, the legacy of the Holocaust, and about how Smadar's encounter with a memorial site deeply shifted her perspective. We talked about the war in Israel, about its impact on identity, and about the complex emotions of belonging to a national narrative. We talked about how the body knows things before the mind does and about the importance of listening to the body in times of transformation and much more.Connect with Smadar:Website - https://smadargoshen.com/Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/smadar.goshen/Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/smadar_goshen/Vimeo - https://vimeo.com/user14631161Support the podcast:https://movementlab.eu/mftb-supportSubscribe to get the podcast to your email:https://movementlab.eu/subscribe15% Discount Coupon for our online courses: MATERIALFORTHEBRAIN15%https://movementlab.eu/courses
In this week's episode I interview Dinah Siman, a wonderful multi-talented teacher who practices Pilates, Yoga and Gyrotonic™, and has made her name in recent years by specialising in Menopause Pilates. Now also an author, Dinah aims to impassion movement teachers to celebrate menopause and give confidence to support students during this transformative phase. We talk about both the history and the current understanding of menopause, Dinah generously shares her own journey, and I especially love her thoughts about the opportunities menopause can offer if it's well understood and well supported. Regardless of your personal practice or what you teach, this book truly is written from the heart and designed to give everyone a sense of confidence and well-being in what can be a difficult time to navigate. Written with Dinah's lively sense of humour and backed by science (but not loaded to be a ‘heavy read') we get to chat about how the book works, why it felt so important to write, and why it's a must-buy for anyone who is (or works with) women in movement!! So I really hope you enjoy this conversation and find a lot of value in it. 38 min. Interview: Jen Bleier, Somatic Educator Maureen and Pierre interview Jen Bleier, friend and somatic educator. Trained in Gyrotonic, Gyrokinesis, Pilates, Somatic Experience practitioner, and small "d" dancer. Jen's work spans different modalities, hence her self-description as a somatic educator. Jen said: “when you work with bodies, you can't not work with emotions.” Maureen and Jen are on the same team - working to heal, working to educate, integrating Mind Body Spirit health. So what is Gyrotonic? Officially: the Gyrotonic Expansion System. Gyro - meaning rotating movement that heals - hence tonic. Those who do yoga and work with bodies, those who suffer with lower back issues, sciatica, know the pain that comes from our skeletal system impinging nerves. Better support, better flexibility and expansion of the skeletal system can relieve that pain. Increased space in the skeletal system promotes synovial fluid, whose principal role is to reduce friction between cartilege and bones in joints. Improved flexibility in the body, for instance through an expanded skeletal system that is being compressed everyday by gravity, walking, standing and sitting, can produce improve health. . Gyrotonic started out as "Yoga for Dancers." It was started Juliu Horvath. There are over 6,000 Gyrotonic trainers worldwide. Perhaps you didn't know that? We certainly didn't until Jen educated us. Check Jen out at: https://jenbleier.offeringtree.com Check out Gyrotonic: https://www.centergyrotonic.com/about/gyrotonic_expansion_system/ In a similar vein, Ido Portal: Movement Culture. https://www.idoportal.com Healing through movement. At the beginning of the podcast, Maureen says: "we're all waiting for the medical world to catch-up." Meaning, catch-up to practicality and success of somatic paths to improved health. And to some extent it is. Physical therapy after surgery - get up and move. Medical imaging's improved understanding of healing and body mechanics, brain function. And, yet to some extent it isn't because movement therapy is difficult to monetize. Nonetheless, through sharing and learning pathways, courtesy of podcasts, streaming videos, worldwide web interconnectivity, it's happening. We're delighted you are along for the ride in Learning Conversation. Enjoy!

Yoga is an ancient practice with many non-physical branches. The few ancient physical postures that did exist were closer to a sitting practice than anything else. In the 1920's Tirumalai Krishnamacharya added Scandinavian/Western gymnastic type movements into the physical posture portion of Yoga. This series is inspired by him & his alchemy. I recommend at least two soft Yoga blocks, a Yoga mat with some traction & pads/towels as needed. Welcome to Nucleus Strength; a Podcast devoted to Movement, Health, and Well Being. Holle is a HealingStrong friend and currently a therapeutic instructor. Holle was integral in helping shape the structure of HealingStrong, which in part, helps in guiding group leaders with policies, procedures and processes. She came into therapeutic movement through the GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM® in 2005 with an injury. Beginning a GYROTONIC® apprenticeship at Body-n-Balance in Alpharetta, Georgia, she began to teach while rehabilitating her shoulder. She is certified as a Gyrokinesis instructor and a Pre-Trainer authorized to teach students beginning on their own path to instructorship. Holle attended her first therapeutic course with Paul Horvath and Uwe Herbstreit in 2007, and the direction of her work refined towards holistic, comprehensive resolution of bio-mechanical pain patterns. In working with people struggling through chronic pain, she recognized a frequent connection to situations of stress and backgrounds of trauma. Combining the beauty of art and nature, the kinship of supportive people, and the empowerment of movement, she started facilitating retreats for women to restore hope and foster healing. To more fully help people bridge the divide between movement potential and current restrictions, Holle gained her licensed massage therapist designation in 2020, and shortly after began personal mentorship under 5 time Olympic team massage therapist Benny Vaughn.Holle's Website: www.holleknowles.comHealingStrong Mission Statement

The ABMP Podcast | Speaking With the Massage & Bodywork Profession
For thousands of years, various cultures have used sound as a tool for healing. In this episode of The ABMP Podcast, Kristin and Darren speak with Ben Brown, founder of HND + TMPL Massage Therapy, about how sound affects the body, mind, and spirit, insight into what a sound offering consists of, and how different instruments play different roles during a massage session. Ben Brown is the founder of HND + TMPL Massage Therapy, an NYS-licensed massage therapist and educator, a sound practitioner, and a former GYROTONIC instructor. Ben's practice is based on the wisdom of the body to find its way back to health. He strives through conscious touch, to create space and awareness of the body in its present state. Let's talk about Lyme disease. It's a bacterial infection caused by the bite of an infected tick and it's pretty prevalent in the US with over 300,000 cases reported each year. But here's the thing, conventional medicine usually only treats the symptoms of Lyme disease with antibiotics, which can have negative side effects and don't address the root cause of the disease. That's where functional medicine comes in. It offers an alternative approach to treating Lyme disease that focuses on supporting the body's natural healing processes. Functional medicine practitioners use a variety of tools and techniques to identify the underlying factors contributing to a patient's Lyme disease, such as genetic predispositions, environmental toxins, and nutritional deficiencies. That's why today I am bringing you some of the most inspiring stories of people who have healed themselves of lyme disease through functional medicine testing, nutrition, detoxification and alternative medicine. This is the Lyme series: This is the series to listen to or send a loved one who is suffering with Lyme and has exhausted all other options. There is hope. You can heal. First up, we roll a clip from episode 199 with Devon Dionne. Devon's wellness journey dates back to her late 20's. Despite being a dancer and appearing slim and healthy, she had a disordered relationship with food, and was pre-diabetic and pre-menopausal: her blood sugar and hormones were completely out of balance. And, she was suffering from Lyme disease. Through a combination of Gyrotonic training, holistic anti-aging strategies and nutrition, Devon completely healed her Lyme disease, balanced her hormones and now feels healthier than ever. Then we're throwing it back to episode 247 with Adrienne Nolan-Smith. Adrienne was diagnosed with Lyme disease at just 11 years old. Back then, doctors didn't know much about Lyme, how to recognize it, much less, how to treat it. Antibiotics weren't working, but Adrienne did not give up. She went on a route to heal herself and between a whole foods diet, hyperbaric oxygen therapy, alternative medicine and more Adrienne healed her body from Lyme disease. Thank You to Our Sponsors!
