Good Mood Method is a nervous system therapy program designed for individuals recovering from physical and emotional trauma. The approach combines music, movement, and meaning to help clients rebuild biological safety in their nervous system and feel like themselves again after traumatic experiences.Founded by Gilad Miller, a Polyvagal and Logotherapy Practitioner, Foundation Training Specialist, and Trauma-Informed Somatic Coach who recovered from a moderate to severe traumatic brain injury (TBI), Good Mood Method leverages clinically-proven somatic practices to create sustainable healing. By emphasizing recovery at home between appointments, the program helps the nervous system anchor itself in safety and presence—the foundation for a meaningful recovery.Summary of the EpisodeIn this episode, host Bethany Lewis (The Concussion Coach) speaks with Gilad Miller about his journey of recovery from a moderate-to-severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) sustained in a skateboarding accident. Gilad shares his experience of being discharged from the hospital and later being told he was “medically fine,” despite battling debilitating symptoms like insomnia, sensory overload, and depression. The conversation explores the critical gap between physical recovery and holistic healing, emphasizing the need to treat the whole person—mind, body, and spirit. Gilad introduces his integrative approach, the Good Mood Method, which is built on three pillars:Music: Using the Safe and Sound Protocol (a Polyvagal Theory-based listening therapy) to retune the nervous system and reduce sensory sensitivity.Movement: Utilizing a trauma-informed version of Foundation Training to restore the body's structural integrity and teach the nervous system that it is safe.Meaning: Employing Logotherapy (inspired by Viktor Frankl) to help individuals define what “getting better” truly means to them and anchor their recovery in a sense of purpose.Gilad and Bethany discuss the importance of social connection for co-regulation, how to build a compassionate relationship with one's own body, and the necessity of moving at a pace that feels safe to the nervous system.Resources MentionedSafe and Sound Protocol (SSP): A five-hour listening therapy based on Polyvagal Theory designed to reduce sound sensitivities and improve social engagement.Foundation Training: A bodyweight movement practice focused on restoring the posterior chain (spine, hips, and head carriage) to build structural stability.Logotherapy: A therapeutic approach developed by Viktor Frankl focused on finding meaning in all forms of existence, even suffering.Viktor Frankl's Book: Man's Search for MeaningGuest Contact InformationWebsite: http://goodmoodmethod.caSocial Media: @goodmoodmethod (Instagram)Free Class: https://www.goodmoodmethod.ca/no-cost-classConnect with Bethany:Website: www.theconcussioncoach.comFree Guide: "5 Best Ways to Support Your Loved One Dealing with a Concussion" on the website

Story at-a-glance Kyphosis (rounded upper back) signals spine failure from muscle weakness, poor posture or fragile bones; it increases risks of falls, breathing problems and early death Height loss exceeding 3 centimeters often indicates silent spinal fractures; these allow your spine to buckle forward even without noticeable pain Postural kyphosis from poor habits is fixable, while structural kyphosis from osteoporosis and vertebral fractures is harder to correct and more dangerous Strengthening your back muscles by lifting your chest while lying face down provides lasting benefits, including reducing broken bones even years after you stop doing these exercises Avoid forward-bending exercises like sit-ups if you're concerned about kyphosis; instead focus on extension-based movements, proper posture both day and night, and Foundation Training

Doch was kommt danach? I'm going to be honest. I went into this one blind. And I've gotta say: Worth it!Here's how it went: Someone I trust recommended that I talk to their friend about something called Foundation Training. I did a quick Google and noted two things: 1) Created by a chiropractor and 2) Reparative in nature. That's all it took. I called John Bowden + set up an Intro to Foundation Training Workshop at the studio. And then I asked him to sit for a chat. So as you listen, keep in mind that I'm sincerely curious and sincerely delighted in what John is sharing with me. And I think you will be too! After the conversation, John lead me through a few poses and it tracks. Foundation Training is an impactful practice for strengthening + aligning the physical form. I'll be at the workshop on Saturday, November 16th. Hope you will be too!Follow John Bowden on social: @bow_den_of_earth

Helping rehabilitate a former triathlete after a serious accident made Dr. Goodman realize he wanted to dedicate his career to pain management. There were serendipitous moments in his life which led to the development of Foundation Training. Living a very active life and then having back pain himself at a very young age. Going to Chiropractic school 20 min away from the training facilities of the US Olympic Water Polo team. Having the opportunity to introduce the team to what would become Foundation Training. These are just a few of these serendipitous moments. He and his college friend and former fire fighter Jessie Salas, now form this power duo, taking FT all throughout the US and world. I describe how I have sprinkled into my daily movement snacks a very effective way to “turn on” my butt, decompress my spine, activate deep diaphragmatic breathing and much more. It all starts with gravity. Gravity has the ability to adversely affect processes in some or all of the following physiological systems: Your respiratory system, because a compressed rib cage limits the lungs' ability to expand and diminishes your breathing capacity… Your digestive system, because squashes organs don't function nearly as well as they should and that burdens the body's ability to gain nourishment from food.. Your circulatory system, because squeezed blood vessels are not as efficient or as effective as they ought to be transporting nutrients, oxygen, carbon dioxide, hormones, and blood cells to where they need to be transported in order for your body to perform or fight disease… Your nervous system, because a compressed spinal cord and constricted neural pathways slow the progress of all those neurotransmitters trying to communicate from the periphery to the central nervous system – and back again – and can undermine the brain's ability to coordinate and influence all the activities of your body… Hunching all day at a keyboard, tilting our heads forward over our phones, commuting long hours, and slouching on the couch simply magnify and aggravate these problems, resulting in poor posture that throw our bodies out of balance, causing unnecessary stress and strain that compromises our joints, restricts organ function, and weakens our force output. Dr. Eric Goodman, DC is the founder and creator of Foundation Training. He has published 3 books contributing to health innovation for individuals and communities. He continues to treat and lecture around the world but lives mostly in Hawaii with his wife Jen and their daughter Sunny. Foundation Training was born of out of necessity. In 2007 Eric Goodman was in his last year of chiropractic school gaining knowledge and skills but remaining debilitated by back pain that had followed him for years. He was advised to get spinal fusion surgery, but after deeply considering the effectiveness and physical toll it would take, declined this option. He instead worked to create a better solution. This choice became the catalyst for his life's work. Dr. Goodman became the doctor he wished he had, creating innovative corrective movements as the answer to his pain. Understanding the challenge of being a patient without viable options, he started teaching the exercises to help other people help themselves. These exercises became Foundation Training and have been utilized by tens of thousands of people to get out of pain. The “business” of Foundation Training is a family affair, run by close friends committed to the common goal of helping people and holding to the commitment of continually learning how to do this better. Over the years, our talented teaching staff have contributed significantly to helping us breakdown the information to make it easier to learn, including developing certifications that allow us to produce instructors who deeply understand and are skilled at teaching the material. Foundation Training's programs remains innovative, continually evolving as knowledge, resources, and applications expand. The community of instructors, clients, patients, and friends whose lives have been improved remains the core of who we are. Connect with Dr. Goodman: https://ftstreaming.com/ Have questions? Running and Returning is a book, a story, and a glimpse into the tapestry of life for now 61-yr-old runner, Vicki Hunter. Vicki is a prior fellow trainer I met in at RallySport in Boulder. She has recently published a book and whether you are a runner like Vicki, a parent of a child with addiction, or none of the above… this episode is one you'll identify with. Vicki's story is testimony to the resilience of the body and the mind. 00:00 My Guest: Vicki Ash Hunter is a writer, runner, coach, and retired university instructor. A lifelong athlete, Hunter found respite in running as a teenager in the 1970s and hasa since relied on it to satisfy her competitive nature and keep her body and mind healthy and strong. Her running resume is stacked with races ranging from 5K to 50 miles, including the 1988 Olympic Marathon Trials and the Pikes Peak Marathon a dozen times, She still competes, and in 2021, at age 60, ran the Boston Marathon in 3 hours, 30 minutes. Hunter's running career is dotted with accidents and injuries, however, and some of them were life-threatening and life-altering. Most significantly, she came back from near-death after a car accident in 1997, when she was pregnant with her first child. She credits her own fitness and fortitude; her will to deliver a healthy baby; running; and the care of specialized and alternative practitioners for her and her daughter's survival, recovery, and return to real life. Where she is now Hunter, who retired from the University of Colorado, where she taught political science, is now a running coach certified in Foundation Training and the Lydiard method. She is a movement specialist who works with athletes of all levels and abilities and is particularly attuned to the needs of ultrarunners. Influenced by her own experience recovering from injuries, she is passionate about and dedicated to helping people move better. Hunter holds a Ph.D. in political science and is the mother of two grown daughters. She and her husband live in Boulder, Colorado, and Kona, Hawaii. Running and Returning is her first book. As we release this podcast, it is the last day to register for the September Retreat in Boulder, CO. where you can enjoy a deeper conversation and running clinic with Vicki included in the retreat weekend. Describe your horrific accident, 14 weeks pregnant At 55 you suffered another critical injury, this time trail running, and it resulted in some fear and trauma have you gone through any therapy to be sure that the trauma isn't stored in your body? 18:50 What was it like as far as people around you, and the kind of support you needed, wanted, vs maybe repelled? 29:45 When did you start running? 37:38 How did that first trail run after your arm injury go? That year, 2016 , you're 55, with so many major life events, one of those was your daughter's struggle with addiction. How has that played out in your reliance or enjoyment of running? In a bomb shelter under attack in the Middle East, Dr. David Berceli, PhD observed what would become the foundation for much of his work. As mortar shells assaulted the shelter's exterior, David observed as young children shook in terror and adults sat, stoic and unmoving. “We train ourselves out of these endogenous rhythmic movements of the human body that actually are designed to help us reduce stress or release trauma,” David observed. “By trembling, those two year olds were actually healthier than the adults who simply froze that mechanism and didn't allow their body to discharge the excited [energy] that was being created by the mortar shells.” This was the match that lit the flame for David, who then decided to dedicate his life to helping people deal with trauma, specifically in mass quantities. This led to the creation of the Tension & Trauma Releasing Exercises (TRE®), a series of exercises that stimulate the body to release deep muscular patterns of stress, tension, and trauma. This system of exercises initiates the body's natural reflex mechanism of shaking or vibrating to release tension and calm the nervous system. In this episode, Dr. Lakhia and Dr. David Berceli discuss all things trauma and how to release that through the body's natural response to trauma and stress.

Sometimes, the greatest struggles can bring forth the greatest innovations. That is certainly true for Dr. Eric Goodman, DC, the founder of http://foundationtraining.com (Foundation Training). As a young man in chiropractic school, his severe back pain from multiple disc herniations became unbearable. “I had about a year left of chiropractic school when my back got bad to the point that I was like, ‘I don't want to be a chiropractor,'” Dr. Goodman tells Dr. Lakhia. “Driving hurt, standing hurt, sitting hurt, and laying hurt. You're just out of options.” It was in experimenting with his own pain in motion that he was able to develop Foundation Training, a combination of exercises and breathing techniques that helps with anything from basic daily movements to athletics. Josh Brigham became a devotee of Foundation Training from his own spinal issues. Now a trainer and owner of http://adaptclt.com (Adapt CLT,) he uses Foundation Training to bring others the same relief he's experienced. He says a video about decompression breathing that he saw at his first Foundation Training event changed how he thought about breath. “It was just real easy to make that concept live inside of you,” Josh said. “And that's how it was introduced to me. And it never went away.” In this episode, Dr. Lakhia, Dr. Goodman, and Josh discuss all things Foundation Training — how to get started, and why changing how you bend and breathe can change your pain.
Did you know your body has complex cannabinoid systems that can help naturally relieve pain? Science didn't even know they existed until fairly recently. Dr. Eric Goodman, Doctor of Chiropractic and creator of Foundation Training, sees the amazing relief cannabis brings to his chronic pain patients. If we can understand how these systems work, and why cannabis works so well with them, we could find better solutions for chronic pain in the future and say goodbye to prescription painkillers for good. || LINKS || www.foundationtraining.com | www.calderalab.com/darin | Full Show Notes - https://darinolien.com/understanding-cannabis-the-cannabinoid-systems-in-the-body-dr-eric-goodman/
