Ever since I heard about ‘The Blue Tits' cold water dipping community, I loved (the brilliant name!), the philosophy, its inclusivity and focus on community but mostly how much it centres on helping people to move forward, gently pushing themselves towards doing something that can be life-changing when it's often needed most.  Chatting with Sian Richardson, its founder, was a great conversation as her enthusiasm and encouragement of everyone is clear throughout and is obviously the reason a meeting of a few like-minded souls on a beach in Wales became a global community. I enjoyed istening to her own story about overcoming depression and finding solace in movement, particularly running and swimming. Joining a community such as she (almost mistakenly) created, can have a transformative power on our lives and I hope listening inspires you to move in a direction you want to take perhaps by sharing the experience with a friend.   About today's guest: Sian Richardon founded The Bluetits Chill Swimmers in the winter of 2014 in the Pembrokeshire sea. There are now over 120,000 members all around the world. The community's values are fun, trust, inclusivity and to ‘challenge our limits together'. You can start your own ‘flock' by visiting the website below and starting your own Bluetits community. Sian is also director at Pencarnan Farm caravan park and campsite in Pembrokeshire. In her search for answers and to reclaim her own movement again she discovered natural movement. The philosophy of training real life practical movements to be able to keep using them as we age, coupled with the benefit of using strengthening and mobilising whole-body movement patterns that are underused in today's modern world made her realise she had found a way to move for life. Wendy's aim is to help people embrace a movement-rich life, at any age, to improve mobility, strength and confidence to keep moving well and doing the things they love for as long as they want.  MovNat Level 1 certified & Functional Range Conditioning certified, she coaches online group classes live & by replay in the Reclaim Movement membership as well as online and in-person private coaching in Oxford.  Find out more about Reclaim Movement: Website  Instagram YouTube Facebook FREE E-BOOK - 'Making the Ground your Friend for Life!'  NEWSLETTER: Sign up for the monthly(ish) newsletter, 'Just.Move' RECLAIM MOVEMENT MONTHLY OR ANNUAL MEMBERSHIP - FREE 7-DAY TRIAL: includes LIVE (& by replay) natural movement classes, all replays, mini movement videos, tutorials, community support, movement prompts, and regular motivation. A truly inspiring woman, Jo Moseley shares her journey with me about how finding a new type of movement played a pivotal role in changing her life direction and helped her overcome sadness. We discuss the catalysts that led her to embrace stand-up paddle boarding, including perimenopause and personal loss.  Jo talks about the paddleboarding challenges she set herself, including a coast-to-coast journey and fundraising efforts. She emphasises the transformative power of movement on mental health and finding joy in the small things, as well as the support she received from friends and family. In our conversation, Jo also shares her passion for beach cleans and the positive impact they have on the environment and personal well-being. She emphasizes the sense of agency and purpose that comes from making a difference, meeting others, and being part of a community.  Jo is a truly relatable person who set challenges to move herself forward and in so doing, made a hugely positive change in her life.  About this week's guest: Jo Moseley is a 59 year old single Mum of two grown up sons from in Yorkshire. After a difficult perimenopause that left her crying in supermarket aisles and the grief of losing her Mum, Jo rowed a million metres and marathon for Macmillan Cancer Support in her memory in 2014. In 2016 she started paddleboarding having injured her knee earlier that year. She knew immediately it was something very special and for the first time in months she “felt like a warrior not a worrier.”  Three years later Jo became the first woman to paddleboard 162 miles coast to coast fundraising and picking up litter.  A film about that challenge called Brave Enough - A Journey Home to Joy has been screened to a great reception online and at prestigious adventure festivals, which is available to rent or buy.  Her first book SUP Great Britain (as above) was published by Vertebrate Publishing in June 2022 and was the first GB guide dedicated to paddleboarding. It soon became a bestseller. As a result she was invited to write a book about paddleboarding in the Lake District which will be published in spring 2024.  Jo is currently setting herself a #FeelGoodJoy challenge to do a Headstand a Day until she's 60 - which will be December 2024!  Instagram www.instagram.com/@jomoseley Website www.jomoseley.com Email healthyhappyfifty@yahoo.com Book: ‘Stand-up Paddleboarding in Great Britain: Beautiful places to SUP in England, Scotland & Wales' - on Amazon or on Adventure Books More about your host, Wendy Wendy (49) founded Reclaim Movement after a running injury at 40 turned into 4 years of chronic pain. Today's podcast is with Ian Markow. Ian is a personal trainer and movement educator based in Delray Beach, Florida, and founder of Markow Training Systems. Ian utilizes methods and philosophies from Functional Range Conditioning, the Postural Restoration Institute, and more as he works with clients from the general population to professional athletes. Ian is an internationally recognized expert in fitness, mobility, and human performance and has a number of educational programs, courses, and workshops. With the vast amount of information on corrective exercise, movement, and mobility training, knowing where to start and how to view the human moment equation can be challenging. As helpful as movement training can be, it can also easily create a training narrative that an athlete is dysfunctional, and promote a “nocebo” effect of movement limitations, as well as create an environment of high pressure on the part of the trainer to elicit particular movement and range of motion outcomes. On today's podcast, Ian discusses taking a practical perspective that centers on what an athlete can do rather than what they cannot and the simple gateways he manages to engage with the individual's breathing, mobility, and alignment. He also gets into ideas on managing more superficial movement abilities versus more deep-seated structural elements, gives his take on assessments, and much more. I just haven't found anything that gets there." - Ian Markow "I think you can generally get stronger. So let's strength train and keep you fit while we work around some of your limitations, but also specifically for your elbow. When you go to play tennis or paddle, why don't you go ahead and do these elbow cars? Let's do a few more of these every day and just keep the thing moving." - Ian Markow "I could care less what her hip rotation is because we're obviously crushing it. She feels great. She's more confident. You know what I mean? So those are the outcomes that matter, and it all comes down to the goal." - Ian Markow "In another way of putting it, I'm kind of thinking about stumbling, thinking about what the right phrase is, but just keeping the training vibe. It's keeping the training vibe and is the main thing feeling better and not getting bogged down with other little minutiae.

Then his adventurous mind and body lead him to explore things like Obstacle Course Racing, Natural Movement, the Wim Hof Method, and Functional Range Conditioning, among other approaches to wellbeing optimization. Drawing on these experiences, Coach Pax enjoys educating people on the power of creating and maintaining a healthy mind-body connection, which is the foundation for the goal of being fit for the long term.     Alongside Master Coach K, Pax has delved deeper into the science and practical application of movement for health. Having assisted in teaching Restore Human courses in Europe and North America, he is a key contributor to the further refinement and execution of the Restore Human Method.

Most of us, even if we're very active, are not moving our bodies the way nature designed them to move. We exercise plenty. We also sit plenty. We wear shoes that don't help keep our feet strong or our posture properly aligned. That can set the stage for aches, pains, and injuries, especially during this time of life when our joints are more vulnerable. This week we talk with movement coach Petra Fisher about the small daily adjustments we can make and exercises we can do to enhance mobility, decrease pain, and improve performance. Petra is a movement coach, body nerd and recovering lawyer. She is certified in Restorative Exercise, MovNat and Functional Range Conditioning. Movmed is a sensory first, mechanics second system, training the deeper brain based reflexes in the body as the main priority. We're all more athletic and functional on the other side of stress. Movmed helps people identify stress related dysfunctions, with the intention of remodelling the mind/body connection without those internal restrictions. We make professional athletes better at their sport, and the general population feel relief and comfort in their bodies that allows them to better pursue their goals. Stress related dysfunction can turn to injuries, pain, and limited ranges of motion. With the right change in perception, pain can be reduced to discomfort and motion can improved quickly. Movmed helps identify lacking perception in the nervous system, helping reconstruct our interoception (the ability to sense your internal state), reflex driven behaviours, and parasympathetic performance that our bodies are designed to thrive on. I have been in athletics for over 25 years and started my coaching business 10 years ago with the goal of transforming people's minds and bodies. I've always had a deep curiosity for mechanics and physics, not just of the body, which led to my academic studies in Philosophy and Mechanical Engineering. Thru years of searching for the most innovative solutions to serve my clients, I have been introduced to multiple elite accreditations and mentors. Some of these mentors include Wim Hof from the Wim Hof Method, Scott Sonnon, the creator of TACFIT program and Coach Gil from GOATA, among many more. In 2016 I was a part of the first class of Wim Hof Method instructors to be certified by Wim to teach his method in the USA. Becoming a WHM instructor has been a fun and life changing experience. Scott Sonnon, the creator of TACFIT program, has been crucial for my understanding of the energy systems in our body. Going through the TACFIT 26 Field instructor test remains as one of the toughest challenges I've ever completed. Most recently in 2021 Coach Gil from GOATA has been transformative in the way I understand the gait pattern for forward locomotion. Combining the knowledge I've gathered and experience of implementation, my latest materialization of information and services is the Pelton Plan. Co-hosted by Anthony Manuele and Dr. William Rajbar, the foremost podcast opening discussion about the most innovative ways to train, and move. your body. "Currently I work as a chiropractor in Banff Alberta, however my passion is human movement/biomechanics. I put theory into TEST to find out what works and what doesn't. The Bruce Lee quote “take whats useful and disregard the rest” is how I find movement truth. The ultimate truth is in the movement not the theory, it has to work in reality. Now Running/Gait mechanics and martial arts (especially boxing) is how I test truth in movement; theory is always put to the test! From my teenage years into my late 20s, I spent significant time within mainstream fitness practices such as Crossfit, powerlifting, Olympic lifting, gymnastics, and bodybuilding, not in that particular order. I have also spent time playing soccer, boxing, skiing amongst other sports. Having stacked many injuries in my teens/20s from improper training, I was led on a journey into chiropractic and sports injuries. I have worked with 1000s of injured patients in 8 years of chiropractic practice and have seen many injuries in the gym as a former Crossfit coach for 5 years. I've now spent 1000's of hours learning and practicing systems such as Functional Range Conditioning, Weckmethod and Goata. Goata has my interest at the moment, as I see it as a platform for a new Paradigm in movement. I believe we (Experts) are using incorrect maps of movement, therefore injuries are prevalent in sport and life. I will always test and retest in my own theories in real movement. This episode we're going to be talking about the difference between "pattern fractal training" (mastering movement by training the patterns and portions of the pattern exclusively) vs training stimulus provided from other forms of training (using tools like maces, ropes, pulsars, cable machines, etc). In 2018 I became a master-level MovNat certified trainer (Level 3 + aquatics + combatives), and in 2020 I became a Coast Guard licensed captain. I operate a part-time sailing charter business on an Islander 36 in Berkeley, but mainly make my living producing radio, podcasts, and books based on podcast interviews. My writing focuses on the intersection of health and politics, with occasional forays into anthropology and agriculture. I've written/edited several books including Hormetics: Physical Fitness for Free People, Three Sheets to the Wind: The Art of Flying Spinnaker, and most recently, The New Strongman Code: Building Resilient Fitness Community in the Post-COVID Era. My work has been published in BBC.com, Acres USA, Townhall.com, and Erraticus. I host a tribe of natural movers every Saturday morning in a public park for free movement, in nature. We borrow from many different modalities, including MovNat (aka the Natural Method), parkour, yoga, etc., although we swear by none of them. We spend the most time doing groundwork and inventing games, while incorporating the elements as much a possible through barefoot running, open-air "bathing” (a la Hebertisme), and cold water swimming (when high tide allows it)." The ultimate truth is in the movement not the theory, it has to work in reality. Join me on my journey to change the movement game for the public and experts." --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/the-art-of-move/message
