É a música. A minha avó e a minha tia-avó. A minha mãe não ligava muito. Ela estava sempre a parir. Então a minha avó tomava conta. Isto mudou a minha vida. E isso me levou à música, porque detectaram-me na rua a recitar poemas. Vale a pena. Agora vou a Cabo Verde descansar. Eis a programação do festival "Au fil des voix": https://www.aufildesvoix.com/
Send us a textJane Duncan, a 67-year-old dancer and educator, shares insights on her life and careers. She always knew she was a dancer, starting when she was 11. For her, dance was a healing and power source. While she cherished it, always seeing herself as a dancer, she changed careers, got degrees and flourished. She shares her mentors and how they changed her life. She now volunteers with an organization that accredits fire organizations. All her life lessons she lays out. Jane Duncan: Dancer, Educator, Contributor As is the case for most dancers, we have a knowing from an early age that we are dancers. The blessing with that knowing, is that we always know who we are no matter who old, fat, or infirm we may become. I stopped trying to make my living as a dancer in my mid to late twenties but since then, I have danced on the edges of my life. In addition to dance as a primary definer, so is education. I have been an educator of adults since I was barely an adult myself beginning as a dance educator at Mount Royal College. At that time one of my students said to me, “Jane, what you are is an educator.” I was mortally offended! I thought, “I am a dancer!!” The student was right, though. I am also an educator. This understanding culminated in earning a doctorate in adult education and higher education leadership and lead me from teaching in post-secondary to administering education in emergency services to fulfill the need for a new challenge. This experience resulted in an invitation to be appointed as a volunteer for an emergency services accreditation body. I have been contributing to that cause beginning in 2008. I have been given many gifts and giving back is what I am called to do. Send us a textIn this episode, we visit the rouge imperial state that popped up in the Balkans after the conquest of Constantinople. This state is called the Despotate of Epirus, as it was the rightful inheritor of the Roman Empire. Michael Komnenos Doukas was a bastard cousin of the Emperor in Constantinople... but now he had the chance to really make a name for himself and carve out a piece of the old empire to form his new kingdom. In this episode, Michael goes from a puppet of the Latins to a full-blown rebel, going to war with Latins, Albanians, and the city of Dyrrachium. When he entered the old imperial cities, he was greeted as a liberator and a hero, but when he crossed over to the Latins, he became the cruel conqueror... but maybe he was just the type of cruel conqueror the Greeks needed to deal with the Latin Crusaders now living in the midst of the old Roman Empire. The History of Modern Greece Podcast covers the events from Ancient Greece, the Roman Empire, and the fall of Constantinople in 1453, to the years under the Ottoman Empire, and 1821 when the Greeks fought for Independance... all the way to the Modern Day.Website: www.moderngreecepodcast.comMusic by Mark Jungerman: www.marcjungermann.comCheck out our 2nd Podcast: www.antecedors.

Theodore Laskaris started his career in Constantinople when he married the daughter of the Roman Emperor Alexios the 3rd. But after the city was sacked, the noble members of the Imperial fled in all directions. Theodore found himself in Nicaea, where he started a resistance against the Latins. After many successes, he was crowned the Emperor by the Patriarch and started the Empire in Nicaea. However, he was not the only member of the royal family to claim that title, and soon, five Roman emperors were running around the frontiers, with several offshoot Imperial states rising in the three corners of the old empire. Theodore Laskaris finds himself under attack by, not only the other Greek States, but also the Seljuk Turks and the Latin Crusaders in Constantinople. The History of Modern Greece Podcast covers the events from Ancient Greece, the Roman Empire, and the fall of Constantinople in 1453, to the years under the Ottoman Empire, and 1821 when the Greeks fought for Independance... all the way to the Modern Day.Website: www.moderngreecepodcast.comMusic by Mark Jungerman: www.marcjungermann.comCheck out our 2nd Podcast: www.antecedors.com

Stephen Drew shares his experiences gained from a bikepacking tour through Namibia's vast landscapes.Stephen called this his Ride of Independance and his journey to taking on such a challenging route is full of overcoming adversity. Stephen's is an an experienced Mountain Biker, and regularly participated in the racing scene at events such as the Trans Alps. His first experiences of touring were actually taken on a motorbike and it was during one of these trips that a freak accident resulted in an above the knee amputation of his leg. Prior to the accident he was The motorcycle accident was a truly life changing event, but listening to Stephen recall how he made his way through the rehabilitation and recovery process, I could tell that he was focused on getting the most out of his life. From learning how to adjust to life with one leg, to using a prosthetic limb to cycle - which is very rare for an above the knee amputee, to taking on a multi day bikepacking trip through some of the harshest landscapes in Namibia. A boomerang is supposed to return when it leaves your hand. But a boomerang kid, well, that's something else entirely.Do you have a boomerang kid? That's a term for an adult child that's returned home, like a boomerang, and now lives with you again. If so, you're not alone. We'll talk about what you can do about it.You're not alone if you have a boomerang kid living in your basement. The latest Boomerang Kids Survey by Thrivent, conducted in April, found that 46% of parents have had an adult child move back in with them at some point. This trend brings unique financial challenges for both parents and children.Impact of Student Loan DebtThe survey revealed that student loan debt is a significant factor preventing boomerang kids from achieving financial milestones:Buying a home: 39%Saving for retirement: 34%Building emergency savings: 36%Additionally, 28% of young adults report living paycheck to paycheck due to student loans, with only 22% saying their first job helps them pay down that debt.Financial Strain on ParentsAn adult child living at home may not be a significant financial burden if you only provide basic necessities. However, the costs can quickly escalate when parents start covering expenses like smartphones, student loans, and car payments. Many parents are willing to help their kids even to the point of jeopardizing their own financial stability. A Bankrate survey found that around half of parents have sacrificed emergency savings and debt payoff efforts to help their adult children, and 43% have tapped into retirement savings. This financial support can lead to dependence, where adult children begin to expect regular handouts. To prevent this, it's crucial to establish boundaries and encourage financial independence.Strategies for Encouraging Financial Independence1. Realize the Need for ChangeIt's essential to recognize the importance of addressing this issue. Having an adult child living at home should be temporary unless there are mitigating circumstances, such as caring for a disabled parent.2. Set Non-Negotiable RequirementsYour boomerang child must have a job and be earning an income. Set a deadline, such as “Moving out day is two months from now if you're not working yet.” With plenty of jobs available, this should be feasible.3. Establish a Budget and Financial PlanOnce your child earns money, sit down with them to create a budget and financial plan. Emphasize the importance of saving money to move out and live below their means to achieve future financial success. You can temporarily offer to match their savings to accelerate the process.4. Encourage Emergency SavingsTeach your child to save for emergencies, ensuring their budget allows for this once they're on their own. This will prevent them from needing to borrow money or move back in during a crisis.5. Be a Financial Role ModelLead by example. Demonstrate wise money management practices to instill financial responsibility in your children. Proverbs 22:6 tells us: “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.”It's never too late to start teaching financial responsibility. By implementing these strategies, you can help your boomerang child leave the nest successfully and achieve financial independence. Remember, the goal is to guide them toward a future where they can manage their finances wisely and thrive on their own.On Today's Program, Rob Answers Listener Questions:Why did my credit score drop after making a large payment on my credit card? Can we withhold tithing temporarily to focus on expenses for our son's home, or should we continue tithing even though it's a struggle right now?I formed a revocable trust 23 years ago after my husband died when I owned a house. Now, I no longer own the house, and the only things in the trust are my car and some investments totaling about $80,000. Is it still worth having the trust, or should I get rid of it? If I do get rid of it, how do I do that? I'm also concerned about the tax implications for my children after I die. Would it be better for them to have the trust or not?I'm considering adding an addition to my home, which I own for free and clear. My 401(k) has grown substantially and is now around $1 million. I wonder whether it would be better to borrow the money for the addition and deal with the opportunity cost or to set up a home equity line of credit and pay it back over the next 10-15 years like a regular mortgage. What would be the better option for me?Resources Mentioned:Boomerang Kids Survey (Thrivent)Rich Toward God: A Study on the Parable of the Rich FoolFind a Certified Kingdom Advisor (CKA) or Certified Christian Financial Counselor (CertCFC)FaithFi App Remember, you can call in to ask your questions most days at (800) 525-7000. Erin and Brennan watch the 4th greatest submarine movie and wonder why it's not more popular than the ratings suggest. We got Michael J. Fox, Cree Summer, Don Novello, and Leonard Nemoy blazing a trail through the latter days of the Disney Rennaisance. Erin gets personal with Rasputin's . . . life, Brennan learns how fast a saw can cut a "female" in two (it's actually a FEMUR and not a FEMALE) (...dumbass), and our four basic food groups: beans, bacon, whiskey, and lard. Dr. Sweet is our favorite hero particularly as we unpack character motivations, and we wonder about Mole's backstory because no one will tell us. Apparently, we don't want to know! Ultimately this is a far more entertaining film than the critics will claim, I mean, y'all bought that there was a secret map on the back of the Declaration of Independance!!!!!
