Fans often sleep on the late films of Hiroshi Teshigahara, the man who directed Woman in the Dunes and The Face of Another. But, as guest Eric reminds us, Teshigahara's late films are equally as powerful. Rikyu and Basara: The Princess Goh represent a magnificent and unexpected late career peak from the master filmmaker. They are the kinds of masterful films one would expect from a Kurosawa and are startling to watch as delivered by a formalist like Teshigahara. Jason also especially liked the pseudo-documentary Summer Soldiers, a morally ambiguous story about Americans stationed in Japan during the Vietnam War. This obscure film crystallizes everything likes about this director: a constant quest for innovation, a drive for deep moral truths, and an exploration of the transience of ego and identity.Great films and a great discussion -- as always.

Wabi-Sabi overall is finding perfection in the imperfections... finding strength in our weaknesses. Wabi deals with the beauty in uniqueness, individuality, singularity. Sabi shows respect to the aged, weathered, antique, defects, and mistakes. A little history: Sen Rikyu was considered the "godfather of the tea ceremony" - Tea Ceremony was designed to bring peace in oneself, and peace to Lords and politicians, higher ups... - It became a way to show off, be flashy, and display how much better you were than every one else. - Rikyu stripped it down to bare essentials, and wabi sabi focused on the simplicity of materials used. - The humbled tea ceremony took the focus off of the vain materialistic aspects, and returned the focus back to the participants sharing in the moment.

Professor Islam Issa on Julius Caesar

The Essay

400 years after the publication of William Shakespeare's First Folio, five writers are each asked to pick a speech from one of the Folio's plays, tell it what they think it means, and what it means to them. This time, the author, curator and broadcaster Professor Islam Issa chooses a speech from Act 2, Scene 2 of Julius Caesar. It's a speech which he says is full of masterful language, can leave us with surprising take-homes about everyday life, and has a fascinating performance history. In an essay which takes us from the Roman Empire to Robben Island prison, Islam shows us how much a short speech from early in the play can teach us about humanity and every day life. Drawing on reflections and quotes from Islamic scholar and mystic Jalal al-Din Rūmi and the father of the Japanese chanoyu (the tea ceremony) Sen no Rikyu, Islam reveals how a passage from a play which is over 400 years old might say something about mindfulness in the present moment. Today at Talking Tea we’re in Montreal beginning our exploration of this city’s vibrant tea scene. Our first stop is Cha Do Raku, a new tea house and shop in Montreal’s Plateau district. Cha Do Raku (it means “decadence of tea” in Japanese) and its owner and founder, Shiho Kanamaru, have already made a name for themselves through the highly regarded teas offered through Cha Do Raku’s online store. Today we visit Shiho in her new shop and chat about how she realized her dream of a tea space that embodies the spirit of doraku, a simple, relaxed enjoyment of tea. Some of Cha Do Raku’s most talked-about teas are “icho”, an unusual, slightly oxidized green tea from Japan. Shiho talks with us about some of these teas, how they compare with other Japanese green teas and with Taiwanese oolongs, and best methods for brewing them. Cha Do Raku also carries high quality matcha, and Shiho shares a little-known preparation technique she discovered for bringing out the aroma and sweetness of matcha.
