With beginnings in sculpture and conceptual art in the UK, Kayleigh Heydon moved to Melbourne ten years ago and has since incorporated painting, ceramics and music into her practice.Don't be offended, but you're probably making your humble cup of tea wrong. When we investigate the subtleties of tea making with Manchester born and raised Kayleigh, it gets heated pretty quick. She's from the North and she needs it strong. Whilst apparently no one wants to be "The Tea Master" in Britain (too much pressure to be the person making everyone's cuppa), they certainly have an opinion on how each one should be made. According to Kayleigh, it can get very political (depending on where you're from).Something that struck us when we began unpacking the Starving Artist myth were the realities of being an artist in Australia in contrast to the UK. She's very aware of how the myth can be used to "other" people in conversations or interactions and finds it an awful way of devaluing someone who is a professional creative. We all agree that it can be an easy way to create a quick and unbalanced hierarchy where the artist is always at the bottom. We discuss the elephant in the industry - the gender divide between representation and support of male artists and female / non binary artists. When it comes to her favourite places in the city of Melbourne, the Preston Market is in her all time top five destinations. You already know how much we love the Preston Market, and it was wonderful to chat about specifics - Kayleigh loves chatting to her favourite butcher and asking for tips and recipe-specific cuts of meat. It's such a crucial community meeting place and we share a collective moment of respect and alarm at the current situation regarding the proposed destruction of the market. Grab a meticulously made cup of tea and join us as Kayleigh shares her green mango and prawn salad, her kitchen super power and the most epic kitchen disaster story that it left us speechless...Find us @whatartistseat on Instagram and our website www.whatartistseat.com.auLinks to Kayleigh's work and anything else we chatted about:Kayleigh's websiteKayleigh's instagram Artist Brendan HuntlyFavourite cook - Clare ScrineDeuce - Wild Type https://www.savetheprestonmarket.com/ Hosted on Acast.

On this episode, Jay sits down with Andy Laub. Andy is a certified tea master, a mindfulness expert, and sound healing practitioner, and just an all around interesting dude. Andy also happened to be the very first guest that Jay recorded with, but for whatever reason the episode wasn't published until now. Andy, and Jay discuss the path that led him to tea, ways to develop mindfulness practices other than just sitting and breathing, which incidentally opens a discussion about a shared interest in contemplative photography, and the two finish off strong with a great conversation about fear, faith, and gratitude. This episode covers all the bases, and does not disappoint. Jay's links:InstagramFocus Therapy Website

Julia Rios of the This is Why We're Like This podcast is back for our post-read discussion of Aliette de Bodard's wonderful space murder mystery novella, The Tea Master & the Detective (https://amzn.to/3aD8cOU). In this episode we discuss power structures within & outside of large organizations like unions or monasteries, the friendship between the main characters, and doing worldbuilding with non-Western cultures. It's a fun conversation, and we were so happy to have Julia on the podcast! If you haven't picked up this novella, I highly recommend the book as a nice corrective to our current crazy times. Also, a quick note on scheduling: We've had to be a bit nimble this last month as both Matt & I adjusted to new life situations. It also turns out I published the pre-read a week early because I wasn't paying attention to the dates. So this episode is coming out on a highly unusual Friday. We'll have another bonus episode next Tuesday, and we have multiple bonus & book club episodes w/ special guests already recorded & ready to go for next month. So expect regular, frequent content from us after this, and thanks for sticking with us while the world got turned upside down! --- As always, we'd love to hear from you! Chat with us on twitter at @spectologypod, send us an email at spectologypod@gmail.com, or submit the episode to r/printSF on reddit. We'll reply, and shout you out in the next podcast when we talk about your comment. And if you like the episode, subscribe at spectology.com or whever you listen to podcasts, and share it with your friends! To find links to all the books we've read, check us out on Bookshop. Hej alla! Månadens bok är "The Tea Master and the Detective" av Aliette de Bodard. Andra saker som nämns Johan Larsson Olanders "Agenterna från MRO", Johan Wanloos "Fitnesstjejer mot människoätande robotar" + "Black Metal Yeti", T Kingfisher/Ursula Vernon, Diamond Previews, Max Gladstones "The Craft Sequence", Lee Child, David Lagercrantz, Chris Claremont, John Byrne, Roy Thomas, Neal Adams, X-men, Hard Case Crime, Scott Von Doviaks "Charlesgate Confidential", Max Gladstones "A Kiss with Teeth", Sherlock Holmes, Stephen King.
This month we're joined by special guest Julia Rios! Julia is a Hugo-award winning Editor & Podcaster, host of the This Is Why We're Like This podcast (which Matt has been a guest on!), and can be found at @OMGJulia on twitter. She edited the Machina Serial Box series, and her fiction has been featured in the Mexicanx anthology A Larger Reality. We're reading The Tea Master and the Detective by Aliette de Bodard (https://amzn.to/2Jqepmr), a Homesian mystery story told by a space ship. It's a lovely, warm, cozy, and short book at a time when all those things feel in short supply. And of course, it's about some big issues that we'll talk about in the post-read. This episode, we discussed what makes a mystery story, the different sub-genres of detective fiction, and how much we like ships with personalities. We hope you enjoy the episode & pick up the book! --- As always, we'd love to hear from you! In the days before Pan Con Podcast, Mike Beltran was the second Mike on another show called Tea Time! with Mike and Mike. In this episode of this podcast, that other podcast's founding Mike, Mike Ortiz, joins this podcasts's host, Mike Beltran, for a conversation between the two Mikes from Mike & Mike, except this time one Mike is just visiting the other Mike to hang out and drink tea. It's all very confusing, but still a worthwhile listen. The two talk about Mike Ortiz's passion for tea and tea culture, how he developed his palate, the impact he hopes to have in bringing tea to more Americans, and the baller move he pulled at a major tea competition. Dorje Kirsten's path as an astrologer and meditator began when he went to the Naropa Institute in 1992. There he was immersed in the unique world wisdom tradition training blending with psychological studies and poetics that only that university has to offer. While at the Naropa Institute he met his teacher Chagdud Tulku Rinpoche. To deepen his understanding of mind he went to live at Rinpoche's retreat center, Rigdzin Ling, in 1995. He stayed there for 11 years engaging in deep retreats and became a ritual arts master and shrine keep of the Nyingma tradition of Tibetan Buddhism. In 2006 he moved to Arcata California and began practicing the art of Astrology and Feng Shui as a method of helping others align with their own inner wisdom. In 2013 he became a certified Tea Master under the auspices of the International Tea Masters Association. Colin Hudon is a doctor of Chinese medicine and Tea Master. His introduction to Chinese medicine began when traditional Western methods failed to heal a debilitating rash that covered his body. A mere 24 hours after receiving acupuncture and beginning a treatment of herbs the rash had all but disappeared prompting more questions than answers as Colin decided to become a student of the ancient traditions of Chinese medicine. A long time friend of Rich Roll (episode 2) and Julie Piatt (episodes 2 & 23), Colin has accompanied them on all 3 of their Our Plantpower World retreats offering a morning tea ceremony featuring the teas from old growth tea forests and trees up to 500 years old. These teas are a far cry from the tea most of us are accustomed to that are from tea plantations that are perpetually harvested using chemicals and modern farming techniques. Colin's describes his tea as "living tea" and this inspired his company of the same name selling such teas from China and Taiwan plus hand made tea pots and bowls, known as tea ware. The practice of drinking high quality tea is highly ceremonial and designed as an opportunity to connect more deeply with one's self, with others and with nature. This conversation showcases the deep wisdom that belies Colin's biological age. Together with hosts Andrew and Claire Davies (a doctor and nurse) he discusses the differences between the Eastern approach to maintaining good health and the Western medical treatments focused on ill health or disease, and contemplates the benefits of incorporating both. Colin is writing a book about his own philosophy on achieving good health and he describes "5 healths" which include sleeping and eating seasonally, mindful eating based on a whole foods, plant based diet, individual based movement practices, meditation and drinking tea. Ben is the founder of New Age Primal with Dr Greg Emerson. They're both by chance former elite and professional athletes and passionate preventative care preachers. Their facilitate performance and survival courses for corporates, teams, individuals and even professional athletes, helping them thrive and rather than just survive. By chance/instagram I think, I was lucky enough to get in touch with Ben and stay with his partner Bel and their husky dog Maska last winter on a ski trip with the Organic Mechanic boys. On this trip Ben took us river surfing, cold water swimming off his river jetty and made us an epic fire and cooking pit in the back yard for a primal organic feast after an afternoons skiing. We didn't have time for a podcast whilst I was there so it was a real treat to catch Ben on skype, despite some loss in audio. I loved Ben's mission, focus and determination, particularly with his work in creating awareness for epilepsy which he lives and with. He doesn't just walk the talk, he runs, swims, forages, and pushes the boundaries of it what is possible mentally and physically. He also has a a beautiful new child Zahara and plenty of New Age Primal work on the go. This talk has inspired me to learn survival skills and see what I'm really capable when you're life's on the line. It reminds me of a lesson Wu De, the Tea Master and Zen monk, shared with me in the car recently, that all successful people in business, life, sport and even spiritual practices are hungry for challenges. They don't just overcome them they seek them out. I hope to seek some with Ben shortly and I hope you do to. Think less, experience more and don't just survive, thrive! Yours happily, :Doug
