☩ LISTE LITURGIQUE ☩ 1. Who wrote about giant wasps, talking horses, and eating babies? Paris Geller knows the answer! In this ep we’re trying to figure out what the hey “brobdingnagian” means—and how to say it. We cover the 1726 novel Gulliver’s Travels (where the word originated), as well as other words the same author invented, why this novel was controversial when it came out, and how the 2010 movie adaptation got Scarlett Johansson the role of Black Widow. Other pop culture we ref: Arthur, Animal Farm, Iron Man 2, Cats, Begin Again, The Devil Wears Prada, Pacific Rim, Alice in Wonderland So it's a show? TumblrSign up for our TinyLetter!

Simon Dillon emailed a photo: "Hello Marc. Although over month ago, this photo shows me driving back from Canberra to my home town Bendigo (700km) while listening to your podcast. Myself and my friend, and fellow musician, Keven McCarthy had just spent the Easter long weekend at the Australian National Folk Festival presenting “Songs From The Australian Tradition” session on each day of the festival. Australia has many traditional songs. Many of these songs use traditional Irish melodies or are even parodies of traditional Irish songs. The Nation Folk Festival was one of 3 festivals the Kevin and I attended in South Eastern Australia over 17 days around Easter. We started at the Lake Cullulleraine Music Festival, then the National Folk Festival and ended up at the Koroit Irish Festival. By the time I arrived back home, we had covered 2800 km and listened to many Irish and Celtic Music Podcasts, the quintessential road trip podcast. Keep up the great work. 16:13 - "Seven Stars, The Sloe" by Mitchell & Vincent from The Preservation of Fire 19:18 - "Celtic Tiger" by Ciunas from High Time 22:59 - Ruben Lopez emailed a photo: "I heard the podcast #393, and was drawing. Conor Coll emailed: "Hey Marc, Just replying to let you know I received the music you sent and I am currently listening to them, still trying to decide between my favourite! As an Irish man I have been hearing Celtic music all my life and it takes me back to a lovely atmosphere when I listen to these tracks. Recently, I have been following a band which I had done a little camera work with in the past, The Ronan Gallagher Band. They are very talented and are from the region I come from, so I am a big fan of their music. They are what inspired me to look for more traditional music which lead me to this newsletter." We've circled around nearby cities, but never met. You moved to New Orleans just as I moved from there to the Mississippi gulf coast. And now you are in my old stomping grounds of Atlanta. My family is moving from the Mississippi gulf coast to the eastern most city in North America (St John's NL) so my wife can get her PhD in analytical chemistry. (I know you understand about moving to support your wife) We will be driving there mid December (all 54 hours of it). Apart from episode 421 the long drive - that's an understatement - we would like to have a few CDs to pass the time on the road. I know there is a large Celtic music scene up there. Do you know of any St John's or Newfoundland Celtic artists that we could buy to support and listen to on the way there? Thanks muchly, P.S. I am an aspiring writer and your podcasts have inspired several stories (now if I could just get published) Txs again. Keep the Celtic light burning, in all its colors" Marshall Blosser emailed: "Marc, I have enjoyed your podcast for over 12 years. The variety of music you bring to this show never fails to inspire and amaze me. The fact that you follow the roots of the music and the tendrils of its influence show just how connected the world is and how music is one of those things that can unite everyone. You understand and respect that musically there is no one Celtic musical voice. But rather that it is a rich and varied chorus of voices that make up that sound. I applaud the fact that you are seeking musicians and tunes for a Celtic LGBTQIA+ Pride special next year. The fact that you stand for the diversity that makes this music so touching and valuable is wonderful and so needed everywhere. Peace and may you never lose your laughter, your joy or your autoharp Marshall Blosser" 38:08 - "Keys to the Castle" by Kellswater Bridge from The Proof Is in the Pudding 42:32 - "Hail to the Autumn" by Captain John Stout from Love Abides 46:35 - James Cope emailed: "Hi Marc,Your ebook is a wonderful gift, thank you. I see the changes in the music business, some beneficial, some not so much. Your ideas and knowledge help me as a long time, and older generation musician “unpaid Professional” (mostly) to find where I can land and have the best impact on the art form. Being upbeat in these changing times is a choice and you are an inspiration. As a friend of mine once said, “Damn! Jim you have made something from nothing!” So…. Damn Marc!! you have made something from nothing. Thanks again." Melinda emailed: "Marc, I have subscribed to the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast - I am still listening to shows from years ago, which was where you played the Joss song, and the "Don't Drink with Hobbits" song, which I LOVE! Shared it with my son who just cracked up with me. We are in El Paso - as far West as you can get! Have not been to any of the festivals in Texas, but go to Phoenix each year to enjoy the Ren Fest there. Have been to the Ren Fest in Bonner Springs, KS, in MD (think they shut that one down, but it was huge and wonderful!), and AZ. Actually, I am still listening to your podcasts when you still lived in Austin, so didn't know that's not where you lived now :) Would love to see you live. Will have to make sure to listen to the more up to date podcasts to get your latest events - or check your website. Keep up the great work! For ages my wife and I aspired to visit Australia and New Zealand. Being two unabashed geeks, we could not make a trip Down Under without dropping in for a tour of Hobbiton. What an amazing day it was conjuring up the feeling that, at any moment, Sam, Frodo or Bilbo might emerge to challenge all of us interlopers in The Shire. While that particular encounter didn’t happen, I did get to talk up the podcast to fellow tourists plus our guide in response to their questions regarding my catchy and quite fetching t-shirt. Hopefully, you’ll pick up a few new worldly fans as a result. I’ve been a devoted listener to the podcast for many years and credit multiple episodes for enriching and expanding my collection of Celtic music. At last count, some 15 artists have joined my growing mix, which all came about only because you featured them in an episode after they submitted their hopes, ambitions and livelihood for consideration. Thanks to you and all the incredible indie Celtic artists for providing us a way to connect and support what we love. In closing, here’s an idea to ponder. What about a future Celtic Invasion Vacation to New Zealand? After all, Dunedin in the South Island has a mighty strong Scottish heritage and the Celtic spirit is alive and well I hear. Not to mention Hobbiton beckoning away on the North Island. A bit ambitious perhaps but it would be up there in the Trip of a Lifetime category, which I can definitely vouch for. My best to you, your family and all the fans in the 2019 new year. Sláinte! When I travel the world I can still listen to my celtic music. A few shows back, you featured Bangers and mash. well they’re playing near my hometown. in fact playing for two weeks just a five minute drive from my house. thank you for keeping me a contact such wonderful bands" Rachel Bryant emailed: "Marc, Just dropping you a line to say how much I'm enjoying all your podcasts!! This time of year, I especially appreciate holiday music that is different (and better) than what I'm forced to hear in public. Today, I am cleaning the house ahead of company, and enjoying the music and a very thematic beer, pic attached. I wish I could mail you some... maybe it's available in your area? I highly recommend this beer. I try to wear my podcast shirt so I can spread the word! I made a new group of friends that way just a week ago, and we swapped stories of our favorite music venues and Irish/Celtic festivals. Happy Holidays to you and your family!" Regarding voting, although all your featured musicians are wonderful, when asked to vote for a specific episode's featured musician, perhaps asking to vote for that particular/featured song would be more appropriate? By that I mean, I have gone back & searched the bands featured but found 2 or 3 songs as my personal favourites. Absolutely no offence to the great bands but I wouldn't go as far as voting them as my favourite bands, rather songs :) Also, what do you think about either as the final episode of the year or the first episode of the year, featuring the top rated songs of the year, voted by the listeners? Anyway thank you again and I promise to become a paid subscriber once I have some income. Currently in the process of starting a sustainable, holistic, self sufficient & off-grid Ecovillage in Canada. More on that if you are interested. Namaste" Vote in the Celtic Top 20. Thank you so much! I use them on my running playlist. I have your podcast to thank for where I am today. My wife’s family is Scottish and Irish. I am of German heritage. After attending several St. Patrick’s Day celebrations with them, I really started to listen to the music. I stumbled upon your podcast shortly thereafter. I was a casual listener for a number of years. After the economic collapse of 2008, I found myself without a job. I went back to school to become a nurse and found that I needed to learn how to speed read in order to keep up with the assignments. I used the jigs and reels in your podcast to help keep me on tempo and keep my speed up. Fast forward several years later.... My daughter wanted to take dance lessons. My mother in law told her that if we enrolled her in Irish or Highland Dance she would pay for lessons. My daughter settled on Highland Dance and we found a group that offered lessons. It was a pipe and drum band with a dance troop. They also offered bagpipe lessons for free. After listening to your podcast for several years, my love for the music had grown so much that I jumped on the opportunity to learn the bagpipes. I now have become an active member of the band, performing for gigs and the competition team, but I also have branched out on my own as a solo piper. I look forward to your podcast every week. Please keep up the great work and we’ll keep listening!” 1:25:14 - "Love Is Ever the Strongest Spell" by The Round Table from Tales from the Turning Leaf 1:29:44 - "Jiggy Biddy's Slur Horn" by Tartanic from Uncharted 1:32:46 - Gerry Corr emailed a video: "Marc, Had a great evening listening to your Podcasts…….sitting on the deck on a cool, late summer evening enjoying sweet Uisce Beatha" GERRY CORR VIDEO Mike Coombs emailed a photo: "Dear Marc, I really love your podcasts! I've started with the Celtic music because of a brasilian band called Tuatha de Danann. I'd like to indicate them for you. I just listened to the "Summer Road Trip #361", and I heard a Brasilian band, Braia! They have almost the same musicians of the band I mentioned. Here follows some other names I remembered, mainly with flute or Whistles on their songs: Kernunna (BR), Tuatha de Danann (BR) , Braia (BR) , Flook, Luar na Lubre, MuteFish, Thanks for your very nice mood, always, and for your inspiration! Anyway, just wanted to say I really enjoy the podcast and hope your travels in Star Wars are out of this world! Sláinte!" Sean Lightholder emailed on Facebook: "What's up Marc. I heard you call out for female pipers back on your Fight Like a Celtic Woman episode. My good friend and fellow Irish musician Autumn Rhodes was posting a new female Uilleann piper every week there for a while in an effort to raise awareness of how many talented female pipers are out doing their thing. I'd reach out and say you were referred by me to see if she could point you in the right direction ??" Elle Clark emailed: "Hi Marc, I really appreciated your statement on diversity! I don’t know if you’ve already done this in the past but I’ve been thinking for a while to suggest a queer-themed episode. I thought maybe it would be “too political” or something... guess not! I’d really love to hear an episode featuring queer songs and/or queer artists. If you can’t gather enough there’s always the old standby of love songs originally sung by one gender being covered by the other without changing the pronouns. This could be a good episode for June which is pride month in the US, or maybe there is an important date in Ireland that would suit."

A great place to live. I moved from DC to Decatur Ga in 1992 to be around for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Never moved back. Three random Celtic items. 1) WRFG (FM 89.3) has a long-running Celtic music show broadcasting every Sunday 5-7pm 2) The Marlay House in Decatur GA is our best local Irish pub. The pub used to have a weekly Irish music session but I think that has gone dormant. One of the best pubs to get a pint, watch rugby and football (soccer) and get some trad food. Good place for St. Patrick's Day with live music. Bonus is that the Marlay has its own fish n' chips food truck that goes to outdoor festivals. 3) Mac McGee on Decatur square is another good Irish pub with a large selection of irish whiskey. The pub occasionally has Irish music. Decatur itself has some of the best restaurants and bars in the Atlanta. I particularly recommend the Brick Store Pub (best beer selection in US) and Chai Pani (great Indian cuisine). Wishing you a smooth relocation” Sam Vermeulen emailed on Facebook: "Just discovered this show on spotify. I'm on the 3rd episode non stop . Thanks for doing this." I feel like I don't say that enough. It's a blast to follow your musical world. Along the same lines, the Heroes CD is incredible. It's been getting regular play on the commute from work. Thank you for that too. I got a grin when you mentioned it on the podcast and said "you probably don't have this album." I follow your blog via RSS feed, as I have for years. Sometimes the old ways still work. Anyway, I just read the one about social media not sparking joy for you. *raises hand* Right there with you on that one. I hear more and more that employers won't hire someone without a social media presence. Does it truly matter? I've never thought so. Sounds like you're coming to the same conclusion after years of being in the trenches on that. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the idea of immediacy, but everything seems to be immediate online. As they say, when everything is an emergency, nothing is an emergency. Unless you're one of these YouTube stars making bank on ad revenue for having millions of followers. Maybe then I'd get the need, but I don't follow any of those types. It's a weird balance. People tell me I'm old for not being on Facebook. Many in the younger generation don't bother with it either. Not sure where that leaves me. But I know what I like. I seek out podcasts and music. That's how I found you years ago. I've never had a reason to second guess. It takes all types in the world. It's like that in any business too. It just seems to me that musicians make music. As Spock told Kirk, it's your first, best destiny. Anything else is a waste of material. ;) I admire that you're willing to try new things, and I can't imagine how much of it comes down to marketing. In the end, you've built a solid product with a solid brand, and you continue to do so. It speaks for itself. I did have one old school idea... have you thought about broadcasting your podcast feed on XM radio? Or even on local FM bands (in conjunction with local Ren Faires and cons)? Then the radio stations feel the need to advertise for you. Radio is where music lives, right? You probably have considered it, but it never hurts to toss an idea out there. I've wondered why, as popular as Ren Faires are now, why there is no Ren Faire Radio. But then... this is what you do in podcast form, isn't it? Is radio not the great granddaddy of all social media? Orson Welles knew it. Freddie Mercury knew it. 80 years on, has it really changed so much? Apologies for rambling. In any case, this is a long-winded way of saying that this old school music fan appreciates you efforts. I have for years, and I will for years to come. I hope your move to Atlanta goes smoothly. All the best to you and yours." 44:39 "Hold Onto Your Soul" by We Banjo 3 from Haven 48:39 "Barrowburn" by Cady Finlayson from Celtic Purple 50:40 "Down By The Sally Gardens" by Dervish from The Great Irish Songbook 55:10 CELTIC PUNK 59:40 "Beggar in the Road" by Templars of Doom from Hovels of the Holy 01:02:39 CELTIC INVASION VACATIONS Every year, I take a small group of Celtic music fans on the relaxing adventure of a lifetime. This week kicks off with some follow-up on John's epic fridge journey. In addition to *many* photos of uneven refrigerator doors, John has also received several warnings about what he needs to be watching out for. John also appends his anecdote to include a related new appliance, and Merlin recommends a tactical ice option. Your hosts discuss the mysterious tween Whisper Network. Merlin thinks John might be a Buddhist. John revisits Merlin's oopsies with apparently not remembering to record podcasts. There's initially some confusion about lists, but there's clearly no confusion about Merlin's overdue need for a checklist. Merlin hopes that John can help remove his defects of character. John shares that he didn't get his money's worth from a recent podcast. In a mini-topic, your hosts talk about _Game of Thrones_ and kids. Hey, everybody likes dragons, but could you ever *really* produce a suitably kid-friendly version that makes any sense at all? An edited collection exists, but John is definitely not sold on how the edits got made. Merlin suffers a brief distraction to perform some financial tech support, and John briefly impersonates a YouTuber. Merlin needs some help finding an artifact from his youth, and John has beef with whether the artifact is actually funny. Then, that becomes a whole thing, and the guys reminisce about old newspaper cartoons. Next up is what John describes as a "quick item" about buying a couch. The struggle is real, people, and John hasn't seen anything he really likes. John has twice as many kids as Merlin, and they loosen the legs of things. Your hosts seem to agree on the widespread problem of improper furniture scale, but they do forgive the monsters their Brobdingnagian home furnishings since they live in the midwest. Which is large. Is it okay for a couch to be permanently moist? Finally, John closes by extolling the benefits of a proper headboard. (_Recorded on Tuesday, April 23, 2019._)
Brobdingnagian Bards are back for the 10th season of Sherwood Forest Faire. That means were are once again in the same vicinity of each other. That means craziness will ensue. Andrew McKee is a little hoarse in this episode. That means Marc Gunn gets to make fun of him while Andrew's guard is down. But it's not all goofiness. In fact, we make a big announcement. We're making a new album! You can learn the new album name. As always, this show is brought to you by our Nagians Only Club on Patreon. Sign up today so we can keep entertaining you! So you will mostly hear fun Celtic music on the show. But it'll be mixed in with songs inspired by Star Wars, Star Trek, Lord of the Rings, Doctor Who and Firefly. WHO'S PLAYING IN THE PUB TODAY? 0:18 "The Hunter Set" by Runa from Current Affairs Everyone is Irish on St Patrick's Day. But I prefer to see this as a holiday for everyone of Celtic ancestry. I don’t know how many kilts I’ve seen worn on the holiday, but it’s a lot. 8:25 FACT #1 Ireland is one of seven Celtic nations. These are the places that the Celts settled after invading their way from central Europe before finally being conquered by the Romans and driven to the fringes of continent. The nations include: Ireland, Scotland, Wales, the Isle of Man, Cornwall in Southwest England, Brittany in France, and Galicia in Northwest Spain. While the Celts settled in those locations, they were eventually pushed out of those homelands to places around the world. 9:32 “Almost Irish” by Ceann from from Almost Irish and Best of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast 14:45 FACT #2 Boston, New York, New Orleans was one of the top 3 immigration points for the Irish during the potato blight of the 1800s. “Men of New Basin Canal” that honors the 30K Irishmen who died digging that canal. 15:22 “Men of New Basin Canal” by Marc Gunn & Jamie Haeuser from How America Saved Irish Music 18:29 FACT #3 March 17th is the holy day of St. Patrick in the Catholic church. Because of this, it was not celebrated like you find it today. In fact, March 17 was a dry holiday in Ireland until the 70s. All the pubs were closed. In 1995 they began celebrating it like in America. It's quite a ironic that as a sainted holiday, St Patrick's Day is celebrated with drinking. 19:00 "St Patrick Never Drank" by Marc Gunn from Kilted For Her Pleasure 21:27 FACT #4 St Patrick was not Irish. He was born in Scotland or Wales in the 4th century. Originally, he was enslaved and taken to Ireland. He escaped, became a Christian and went back to convert the Celts. He died in Ireland on March 17, 461. I was born on St Patrick's Day. I have a song for all those born on March 17th or of Irish heritage. 21:55 "Happy Birthday from Ireland” by Marc Gunn from Soul of a Harper 25:08 PUB CHAT I want your feedback. What are you doing today while listening to the Pub Songs Podcast? How has this show inspired you? Send a written comment along with any pictures to marc@marcgunn.com. Use the hashtag #pubsongs in the subject of your email. River Godbee replied to my Marc's Musing email: "Typically I am cleaning up around the house, which never ends when you have a 5 year old! But I also listen while driving to work/school or going on walks. I used to use a variety of podcast apps, but now I stick to Spotify so that I can have my music and shows in one place. (It also makes it easier to find the albums you mention in the show.) And for St Patrick's Day? Since I live in Savannah, I will be avoiding downtown and spending the day with my wife and daughter." Carol Baril replied to Marc's Musings: "Hey Marc! Love the last Coffee with the Celtfather! I was sick last week with a stomach bug and bad head cold so I listened on my phone while sitting at home with my kitties! Usually I'm working at my desk and your Podcasts are a great way to relax thru the stress of computer work! I loved that Beer, Beer, Beer song with the Harry Potter twist! Keep working on that one and you can put it on a new Sci-fi drinking song CD!!! Take care and give your girls hugs from me and my kitties!" 27:06 FACT #5 Green is most-often associated with St Patrick’s Day. But St Patrick’s color was actually blue. And as a wild twist, I was told that the Scots wore orange. It wasn’t until much later I realized that green was the color of Catholics and orange was the color of Protestants. And of course the Republic of Ireland is largely Catholic. 27:35 “The Orange and the Green” by Brobdingnagian Bards from Brobdingnagian Fairy Tales 29:56 FACT #6 St Paddy’s Day is the shortened version of St Patrick’s Day. However, that shortened name is often misspelled. It should be spelled Paddy. Not Patty. Patty is a girls name. Paddy is short for the Irish name Padraig. 30:52 “P Stands for Paddy” by Emish from Sinners Make the Best Saints 36:30 FACT #7 The most famous Irish song is Danny Boy. But it’s not actually Irish. Okay the melody is an Irish tune called “Derry Aire”. But the lyrics were written by an English lawyer and songwriter named Frederic Weatherly. I get the song requested so much that I play two versions of “Danny Boy”, the original and a parody about cats. 36:57 "Danny Boy for Cat Lovers" by Marc Gunn & The Dubliners' Tabby Cats from Whiskers in the Jar 40:00 FACT #8 The first St Patrick’s day parade was celebrated in New York in 1762. The Irish were trying to hold on to their heritage. Parades sprang up around the world since then, most notably in Chicago where the river is dyed green. Dublin too now has a big St. Patrick’s Day parade. 40:37 "Patrick's Day Parade" by Mick Moloney from McNally's Row of Flats (Irish American Songs of Old New York) 44:05 FACT #9 The leprechaun is a fascinating and mischievous creature from Irish lore. The modern representation was actually a racist link between the Irish and monkeys. It was meant to belittle the Irish immigrants in the early 1900s. It seems Irish Americans embraced and rebirthed the myth. Oh and apparently, there are no female leprechauns in the lore. I wrote a song that celebrates America’s contribution to the leprechaun myth and to Irish music. 44:36 "The Leprechaun" by Marc Gunn from Soul of a Harper 48:35 FACT #10 Slainte Mhaith is an Irish toast. It means “here’s to your good health”. In lovely Gaelic fashion, it’s spelled nothing like it sounds in English. So if you’re out drinking, be it Guinness or tea, raise a glass and repeat the Phrase. 48:53 "Slainte Mhaith" by Kilted Kings from Name On My Soul 50:53 FACT #11 More than 13 million pints of Guinness are consumed on St Patrick’s Day. I hope you will raise a glass also to Charlie Mopps, the fictitious inventor of beer. 51:11 "Beer, Beer, Beer" by Marc Gunn from Kilted For Her Pleasure The Pub Songs Podcast is listener-supported. A family buys a plot of land on the outskirts of a mysterious village and are plagued by a strange fog that comes down out of the hills.
Inspiration is a funny friend. It finds you and guides you. It takes you to strange and wonderful places. It introduces you to heroes. I started playing Celtic music in 1999... by accident. I had three "Celtic" songs in my song repertoire: "The Scotsman", "Irish Ballad" by Tom Lehrer, and an original Enya-esque song with nonsensical lyrics called "Lounging in La La Land". I was practicing on the South Mall at the University of Texas at Austin when red-haired gentleman asked if I'd like to perform at a Renaissance festival. As a Dungeons & Dragons nerd, I was so excited I asked my friend Andrew McKee to start a band with me. Soon the Brobdingnagian Bards found new Celtic music heroes and inspiration. For me, it was The Wolfe Tones, Christy Moore, The Irish Balladeers, and some random cassette that was called Irish Drinking Songs. That was my introduction to Celtic music. Those were my first Celtic music heroes. Later, I added Ed Miller, Serious Kitchen (featuring Vicki Swan & Jonny Dyer), Dougie MacLean, The Elders, Gaelic Storm, Clandestine, and even Bing Crosby. So of course many of these you have heard on my podcasts. Who are your Celtic music heroes? Welcome to the Pub Songs Podcast, the virtual Public House for Celtic culture and change through music. My name is Marc Gunn. I am a Celtic Geek musician and your guide to a kinder, happier world. Today’s show is brought to you by my Heroic Gunn Runners on Patreon. 2019 marks the 20th anniversary of the Brobdingnagian Bards. To celebrate this amazing milestone, we are releasing a LOT of cool new content every month. We have also made this podcast public once again. Last year, we restarted the band through Patreon. We are creating all new music together. That hasn't been done since 2007. We wanted to give our kind members of the Nagians Only Club on Patreon, a special treat. However, we realized that this podcast is a great tool for bringing new Brobdingnagian Bards fans back into the fold. We asked our Nagians if we could make it public again. They overwhelmingly agreed. And so... it's back! In this episode, we take one of the most in depth examination of how we got started. We share some fun anecdotes and stories from our time together early on. Yes. We've done some of this before. But this is a 20 year retrospective. So it's all new to us. We hope you will join us in our crusade to have fun sing Celtic songs and being Renaissance festival geeks. Maybe you'll even join us at Sherwood Forest Faire at the end of March. Two weekends! You can find details on our website, where you can also buy music, merch and join the Nagians Only Club for just $5 per month. This supports us as musicians. It encourages to continue creating new music for you. Will join us?
Last year, this podcast became patron-only as part of the Nagians Only Club on Patreon. That is now changing! You see, January marked the 20th anniversary of the Brobdingnagian Bards. It seemed a shame to hide all of this great content from Nagians around the world. So we asked them if we could make this podcast public once again. They resoundingly said, "YES!" We are very pleased to share this show with you. Once a month, you will hear us chat about what's new, funny things that happened or are happening, behind-the-scenes look at new songs, chat about geek culture, and all of the silly antics that make up a Brobdingnagian Bards show. Yes, it's a lot like listening to a Brobdingnagian Bards with all of the craziness that ensues. Sign up today! Of course, this podcast would not be back without the generosity of members of the Nagians Only Club. You can support our mission to make Celtic music fun when you join us there on Patreon for as little as $5 per month. Plus, you'll get episodes before regular listeners. The Nagians Only Club on Patreon is part of the modern record label. We are creating new music and sharing our fun sense of humor with you because of your generosity. So please sign up today. Oh! And stay tuned. There's a new episode coming out soon!,
Pubs are often dark places. I'm sure dark things have been discussed. Maybe I'm naive, but I don't feel they are any darker than what we find on social media. I don't like social media. It brings out the worst in people. It makes the world a more vile place than it actually is. And so I avoid it, like the plague. Fair comparison. That's one of the big reasons I changed things up this year. But before we get to this year, let's talk about last and the many things happening in the pub. In this show, you will hear some of my picks of the best Celtic bands of 2018. You'll enjoy new music from the Brobdingnagian Bards to celebrate our 20th anniversary. Learn about the new Song Request feature of Coffee with The Celtfather. Understand my new mission statement for the podcast. And then we will chat about how the pain of engaging on social media outweighs its use and why I moved to YouTube. Finally, I launch a new feedback section today. So I need your feedback. If something is broken, fix it. That's what my dad told me when I was a kid. The simple fact is things break all the time. We don't fix always fix them. We get stuck in a rut. But it's the way things have always been. The way things are. It's a tradition. So we choose not to change. 2018 was a good year for me. I rebelled. I broke down traditional music business barriers. Now I'm forging a new path for a new year for my music...and for this podcast. The Pub Songs Podcast is reborn this year. It's a little bit more like a pub. Patreon is an incredible tool for helping musicians and creators to get paid. However, as a new patron, it's very easy to miss out on all of the cool features Patreon has to offer. Andrew McKee and I try to break down those features to share with you how you can get the most out of your patronage. Let's Get Started This is The Celtfather. My name is Marc Gunn. I'm here with The Irish Bard, Andrew McKee. Today, we're gonna give you a Patreon Primer, to help you better understand how to get the most out of Patreon. I've been using Patreon since 2014. However, it really wasn't until I started the account for the Brobdingnagian Bards that I really realized that a podcast like this would be super useful. I have a lot of friends on Patreon. And Andrew is planning his own Patreon. I thought we'd talk about some of the awesome things you can enjoy and how best to do that. Sign up for different levels. Each offers progressively more access to our creations. Why you should Download the Patreon App This is the easiest way to interact with the community. It's not superbly sophisticated, but you can comment and reply to comments. You can ask questions, and get answers. You can also listen to podcast episodes directly from the app, either downloading or streaming the episode directly in the app. It saves your space. You can fast forward in 15 second increments or you can drag the slider to different points in the podcast. How to subscribe to the Patreon Feed If you have a preferred podcatcher, you are also given a personal podcast feed that you can insert directly into your podcatcher. That's how I prefer to listen. How to Download Music to your computer Now if there are albums or singles you want in a blog post, you'll probably need to use your desktop computer. You can listen directly in the app, but it's kind of annoying. I would prefer to download them and put them directly into my iTunes. Searching in the App Patreon doesn't currently offer a great search feature directly in the app or on the desktop version. That said, Patreons best option is the tag feature. We try to tag every post that we make with simple, easy-to-figure out tags.ie. "bootlegs" are our live concerts. "A Brobdingnagian Minute" will load all of those podcast episodes. "MP3" is the free mp3s that we share. "vlogs" are video blogs.Go to the Posts page on the desktop. You'll see tags on the lefthand side. Just click one and get the desired content. If there's a better way, let me know. How to Interact with the Community Bonuses Save money on Merch Here are some great Patreons you can support Marc Gunn Andrew McKee, The Irish Bard Brobdingnagian Bards Irish & Celtic Music Podcast Did we miss anything? Is there something you like about it or that you think would make Patreon better? Post in the comments.

This month, I talk with Jennie Breeden about Comics and Kilt Blowing. Jennie is the author of The Devil's Panties web comic and carries a leaf blower at Dragon Con for unsuspecting kilt wearers. I also share my new love of the Virtual Tip Jar and how I hope it will allow me to do more Live Video concerts! SHARE this show at http://celtfather.com/ This week, you can look for me on Facebook Live a bunch. I'm doing Coffee with The Celfather to promote a private internet concert on Thursday, Nov 16 at 8 PM Central Standard Time. Tickets are $15. You can get them on The Celtfather store on Square. This will most-likely be a small group of viewers. Feel free to bring your song requests and come ready to chat with me. I decided I'm only releasing one episode of the Celtic Christmas Podcast this year. That means, I'm gonna focus on Spotify playlists of Christmas music to promote. Rather, I'm going to be listening to Christmas music on Spotify myself. Whether you listen or not is irrelevant. But I do want to share my playlist with the hope that you might enjoy the songs too. My latest playlist is called Christmas Drinking Songs. There's a new sale up on the Brobdingnagian Bards Square store. It's an incredible deal. The offer is good until the end of November. If you ever wanted Brobdingnagian Bards CDs, go now! This month, I have an interview with Jennie Breeden. She's the author of The Devil's Panties comic strip. I interviewed her at GenCon as the convention opened. Unfortunately, we only made it halfway through the interview before the Vendor's Hall opened and the interview came to an abrupt end. So I guess I'll have to seek our in the future to finish the interview. Here's my interview of Comics and Kilt Blowing with Jennie Breeden. Stick around after the interview as I share thoughts on Facebook Live and my new virtual tip jar. Can the Virtual Tip Jar change the way I do live shows online? I'm hoping so. Here's how you can help... and it's not just with your generous donations. Welcome to the first episode of Autoharp Radio. My name is Marc Gunn. And yes, I play autoharp. When I first started playing the autoharp in 1997, there was no easy way to listen to the autoharp online.
This is a show of Rebel Songs. From traditional Irish rebel songs to rebel songs inspired by Firefly, you'll hear a fun mix of songs to get your blood boilin' with music from Marc Gunn, Derek Warfield & The Young Wolfe Tones, Brobdingnagian Bards, The Kilt Lifters, Crikwater, Marc Gunn & The Dubliners' Tabby Cats, Bedlam Bards, 3 Pints Gone, Kilted Kings, Ed Miller. Listen and share. Then subscribe for 5 Free MP3s at http://pubsong.net/. Before we get started, I want to let you know that my next album of Firefly music is now being funded on Kickstarter. It's called "As Long As I'm Flyin'". You have until May 18, 2017 to make a pledge if you want a physical CD. After that go to FireflyDrinkingSongs.com. I started compiling this episode at the beginning of 2017. I planned to use it as a platform to share my anger and frustration with the Trump administration's assault on civil rights, health care and the environment. But I decided not to. Overall, that's not what I do musically. Instead, I'll let the songs speak for themselves. Politics is a huge part of Celtic culture. I heard a quote by Irish songwriter Frank Harte on the Irish Music Stories podcast (episode 2) that said, "Those in power write the history. Those who suffer write the songs." For that reason, many of the best traditional Irish songs are rebel songs. They are the songs of people who suffer. When I started playing rebel songs with the Brobdingnagian Bards, we played them, not for the politics, but because they were powerful songs. This show is dedicated to rebel songs in general. The first half has some more traditional rebel songs. The second half are the not-so-traditional ones. And I promise to leave my politics out of any discussion. Pub Talk Celtfather Tuesdays. You might notice that this show came out on Tuesdays. I'm trying to better manage my content. I put out the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast on Thursdays.
