US companies are ramping up their efforts to lobby Congress on the international tax provisions they'd like to see in a comprehensive 2025 tax bill. Among their priorities is retaining the current rates on foreign income, which were included in Republicans' 2017 tax law and are poised to increase in 2026. But there are open questions about how lawmakers can pay for these extensions and make good on President-elect Donald Trump's domestic corporate tax proposals. On this week's episode of "Talking Tax," reporter Lauren Vella sits down with Rohit Kumar, co-leader of PwC's National Tax Office, to discuss which international tax provisions could be addressed in a 2025 bill. He also offers insight into how companies are thinking about the 15% global minimum tax with Republicans taking full control of the White House and Congress. Doug McHoney (PwC's International Tax Services Global Leader) is joined by Rohit Kumar, PwC's National Tax Co-leader and former deputy chief of staff to Senator Mitch McConnell (R) to discuss the US election results. Doug and Rohit cover what the republican-controlled House, Senate and Presidency means for tax reform, why 2025 will be a year for significant “must-pass” tax legislation, the role the federal debt and budget deficit will play, the potential implementation of tariffs, the fate of the OECD's Pillar One and Two, as well as how the new administration could approach digital services taxes (DSTs).
In this episode, Monika explores the potential impact of a Trump presidency on the cryptocurrency market. Following recent U.S. election results, the crypto industry celebrated as Donald Trump returns to the White House as the 37th President of the United States, prompting a sharp rise in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrency prices. Many in the industry expect a more relaxed regulatory approach under Trump, including his proposal for a federal reserve of Bitcoin, which could position Bitcoin as a recognized asset if a major country begins to hold it in its reserves. She explains the concept of national reserves, which are assets held by central banks, like the Federal Reserve in the U.S. or the RBI in India, and typically include hard currencies and assets like gold. Adding Bitcoin to this mix would represent a significant shift, potentially complicating the Fed's role in managing the money supply and interest rates. Monika cautions listeners about the risks of investing in an asset that isn't regulated in India. Monika addresses a common question from her followers: Are systematic investment plans (SIPs) still a viable strategy? While some argue that SIPs may not yield strong long-term gains, she clarifies that SIP performance depends on the quality of the mutual fund chosen and a long-term investment horizon. Although Sensex and Nifty have returned around 23% per year in recent years, she reminds investors that returns tend to normalize to historical averages of 12-14% annually. In listener queries, Sarvesh Sinha (name changed) seeks advice on whether to use funds from underperforming mutual funds to pay off a personal loan he took to help a family member. Shivanand Patil wonders if he should redirect SIP contributions to pay off his home loan sooner. Lastly, Rohit Kumar (name changed) asks about adding gold and international investments to his portfolio. We also hear excerpts from a very interesting forum held last week with Harvard economist Jason Furman and Rohit Kumar of PricewaterhouseCoopers who both question the efficacy of even having a debt limit at all. Furman and Kumar were involved in negotiations between President Obama and Republicans in Congress during the last debt limit crisis in 2011.

The U.S. will hit its borrowing limit on Thursday, according to Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, and her department will need to take "extraordinary measures" to avoid default. That means the clock is ticking for Congress to take action to raise the debt ceiling. For the moment, though, Democrats and Republicans are in a staring match.House Republicans say they won't raise the limit without significant spending cuts. The White House says it won't negotiate over it.Juana Summers talks with two people who've been here before: Jason Furman, who was an economic advisor to then-President Obama during the 2011 debt ceiling stalemate, and Rohit Kumar, who was then a top aide to Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell. In participating regions, you'll also hear a local news segment to help you make sense of what's going on in your community.Email us at considerthis@npr.org.
