Irish premier Micheál Martin recently paid a visit to the White House to meet with Trump. UK correspondent Enda Brady explained that Ireland's historical low-tax policies have helped lure many US companies over - and the nation would collapse without the extra support. "It could pose real dangers for our country as well.""Social media is giving up on fact-checking. The truth is smothered by lies told for power and for profit." he said, appearing to refer to Meta's ending its fact-checking program.without safeguards, AI could "spawn new threats to our rights, our way of life, to our privacy, how we work and how we protect our nation."161 years ago, a New Zealand sheep farmer predicted AI doomOn June 13, 1863, a letter titled "Darwin among the Machines" written by Samuel Butler (under the pseudonym Cellarius) published in The Press newspaper of Christchurch warned about the potential dangers of mechanical evolution and called for the destruction of machines, foreshadowing the development of what we now call artificial intelligence—and the backlash against it from people who fear it may threaten humanity with extinction. It presented what may be the first published argument for stopping technological progress to prevent machines from dominating humanity. The letter drew direct parallels between Charles Darwin's theory of evolution and the rapid development of machinery, suggesting that machines could evolve consciousness and eventually supplant humans as Earth's dominant species."We are ourselves creating our own successors." he wrote. "We are daily adding to the beauty and delicacy of their physical organisation; we are daily giving them greater power and supplying by all sorts of ingenious contrivances that self-regulating, self-acting power which will be to them what intellect has been to the human race. In the course of ages we shall find ourselves the inferior race."In the letter, he also portrayed humans becoming subservient to machines, but first serving as caretakers who would maintain and help reproduce mechanical life—a relationship Butler compared to that between humans and their domestic animals, before it later inverts and machines take over.Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon says AI can write 95% of an IPO prospectusThe initial registration prospectus for an IPO, called S1, usually took a six-person team two weeks to complete. However, now 95 per cent of the work can be completed by AI in minutes, he said. Goldman Sachs chief David Solomon questions start-ups' need to listHe also asked private companies to take ‘great caution' before deciding to go public, adding that the depth of capital in private markets has made the need to go public redundant for many. US companies are ramping up their efforts to lobby Congress on the international tax provisions they'd like to see in a comprehensive 2025 tax bill. Among their priorities is retaining the current rates on foreign income, which were included in Republicans' 2017 tax law and are poised to increase in 2026. But there are open questions about how lawmakers can pay for these extensions and make good on President-elect Donald Trump's domestic corporate tax proposals. On this week's episode of "Talking Tax," reporter Lauren Vella sits down with Rohit Kumar, co-leader of PwC's National Tax Office, to discuss which international tax provisions could be addressed in a 2025 bill. He also offers insight into how companies are thinking about the 15% global minimum tax with Republicans taking full control of the White House and Congress. Underground Leviathan: Corporate Sovereignty and Mining in the Americas (U Nevada Press, 2024) explores the emergence, dynamics, and lasting impacts of a mining firm, the United States Company. Through its exercise of sovereign power across the borders of North America in the early twentieth century, the transnational US Company shaped the business, environmental, political, and scientific landscape. Between its initial incorporation in Maine in 1906 and its final demise in the 1980s, the mining company held properties in Utah, Colorado, California, Nevada, Alaska, Mexico, and Canada. The firm was a prototypical management-ruled corporation, which strategically planned and manipulated the technological, production, economic, urban, environmental, political, and cultural activities wherever it operated, all while shaping social actors internationally, including managers, engineers, workers, neighbours, and farmers. In this study, he aims to unearth the hidden relationships between communities that transcend national states. Throughout the book, the author points out how modern corporations are run by a kaleidoscope of interests and groups, and many of the issues they face are relevant today. Israel García Solares was born and raised in the Xochimilco neighbourhood of Mexico City. I studied for an undergraduate and master's in economics at Mexico's National University (UNAM) and a PhD in History at El Colegio de México. García Solares is currently an Assistant Professor at the Institute for Research in Applied Mathematics and Systems at UNAM, and his research focuses on the global history of technological actors in the 20th century. Guess who finally decided to do their job! The Department of Justice dropped indictments on a sweeping Russian disinformation criminal ring, funding MAGA social media-stormtroops calling for the violent overthrow of our democracy to establish a Russian-style dictatorship and abandoning Ukraine to Russia, where it would be genocided. As Gaslit Nation has long warned: If it sounds like a Kremlin shill, it's a Kremlin shill. Fortunately for the DOJ, Russian-backed MAGA traitors in Congress confessed to being unregistered foreign agents by deliberately blocking Ukraine aid for six months, giving Russia the advantage in a dangerous invasion threatening all of Europe. Follow the money! Lock the traitors up! In this week's bonus show, exclusive to subscribers at the Truth-teller level ($5/month) and higher on Patreon, Russian mafia expert Olga Lautman of the Kremlin File podcast joins Gaslit Nation to break down the sweeping charges by the Feds, exposing Russian active measures trying to steal the election for Trump like they did in 2016, with help from MAGA/Russia shills like Dave Rubin, Tim Pool, Benny Johnson, Lauren Chen, and Lauren Southern, among others. Longtime Trump/Russia connector, Kremlin propagandist, and Senator Rand Paul advisor Dimitri Simes was also indicted, along with his Russian-born wife. We also discuss what's next: Who else might have their home raided by the FBI? We're looking at you, David Sacks!
