The resurgence of the American Entrepreneur - More and more people are leaving their jobs despite the turbulent economy for something better: being their own boss. View the full video interview here. Ross Buhrdorf is the CEO & Co-Founder of ZenBusiness where he has been responsible for overseeing remarkable company and customer growth. In the past two years ZenBusiness has grown its customer base by more than 600% and raised more than $250 million - placing ZenBusiness in the unicorn category. Ross was the founding CTO for HomeAway where he oversaw the technology that built the company from startup to IPO, and through its acquisition by Expedia for $3.9B. In his more than 30 years as a technology leader, entrepreneur and C-level corporate executive in both public and private companies, Ross helps transform the way consumers interact with technology.
New Insights from Ross Buhrdorf. This episode is something different. It's an experimental format that I'm super excited about. Welcome to another episode of The Tony Shap Show.
Ross Buhrdorf, the CEO of ZenBusiness, is leading the way for a new wave of entrepreneurs. ZenBusiness is on a mission to empower the next generation of entrepreneurs, small business owners, gig-economy workers, and freelancers to take charge of their lives and futures by ditching the corporate world and working for themselves. His company enables these intrepid folks to start, run, and grow a successful business. The amount of people that want to opt out of the traditional corporate rat race is staggering. Pre-pandemic ZenBusiness had roughly 30,000 customers—and the number recently exploded to 250,000. Buhrdorf, a long time tech executive, early in his career saw older workers get fired at the company he worked at. This caused an epiphany—if they laid off the experienced talent, what would happen to him ten or more years later? He decided that since it's risky to pursue the traditional corporate route, he might as well chart his own course and be in control of his destiny. Buhrdorf then rebooted his career as a successful entrepreneur. Buhrdorf is not alone. Americans are a relentless, maverick, rugged and determined bunch of people. While we like complaining and arguing with each other, Americans have this built-in sense of self-determination and grit. We refuse to give up in the face of disaster. Against all odds, we persevere and bravely forge forward, in pursuit of our dreams and goals.

As the 2020 pandemic continues to threaten America’s small businesses, it makes sense to talk with people who are saving them, by serving them through technology. My guests today do just that. They are Ross Buhrdorf, CEO & Founder of ZenBusiness, and his colleague Lamine Zarrad. Lamine, who is SVP of Financial Services, was a guest on Barefoot Innovation last year, when he was CEO of Joust. Joust was acquired by ZenBusiness earlier this year. In our conversation, Ross and Lamine explain that their target market is service businesses with zero to ten employees. They explain that, in order to thrive, these little enterprises need to digitize every aspect of their activity, from marketing to legal to finance. Reflecting a pattern that I’m seeing everywhere, ZenBusiness is seeing the demand for this digitization soaring in the pandemic, which is driving activity of all kinds into digital and online channels. I’ve been saying that, in finance and financial regulation, we’re seeing a decade of technology adoption and innovation squeezed into a few short months.

While we have great weather mixed with southern hospitality and a Texas can-do attitude, there’s one thing that really makes our city shine: An incredible network of entrepreneurs, investors, mentors and startup resources. On this episode of the Austinpreneur podcast, Ross Buhrdorf, CEO of ZenBusiness, is here to talk about “the network effect” and the role it’s played in his success as an entrepreneur, and as an investor and mentor.
In this episode of the Millionaire Mindcast, we have an epic interview with Ross Buhrdorf, who shares all the actions and beliefs they've applied to flip up a startup company into a multi-billion dollar travel industry. Get ready as we dive in on today's conversation! Ross Buhrdorf is a serial entrepreneur, CEO at ZenBusiness, which democratizes entrepreneurship by making it easy to create, maintain and manage an LLC or other corporate entity. He is responsible for building both the team and the technology platform that ultimately created and defined the concept of the “short-term rental” and “vacation rental by owner” market. In his more than 30 years as a technology leader, entrepreneur and corporate executive, Ross helps transform the way consumers interact with technology. Also, CTO of the year in 2011 and founding chief technical officer for HomeAway (NASDAQ: AWAY) which he helped grow the company from a startup to its current position as a $3B global leader in the travel industry. Also, a member of the Board of Directors for American National Bank (where he is helping them through a digital transformation and security upgrade). He is passionate about the consumer Internet, security, mobile technology and how to apply innovation to build better products and a better world. At an early age, Ross was exposed on entrepreneurship. He is a risk taker, who believes that the best way to startup is to get out from your own comfort zone. It's just how managing the risks and being not afraid to fail and to continue the journey. However, Ross had failed startups but preferred to learn more from the failures in many cases. He knows that everything isn't going to be what he expected. But handling the situations wisely, setting a standard culture, finding the best actions, tools, and resources will help give more to the world. It is everyone's responsibility whatever selections they've made but making sure that you're getting the right perspective. Moreover, he believes that everything starts with the team and neighborhood. It doesn't need the right information but the right people. Ross trusted everyone's talent and capabilities. The team must have a common set of goals and culture, passion, and believed that you can do it. It empowers to come up something that is legendary and beyond to what expected. Action and consistency lead to the rewards if it's good or bad it depends on whatever actions you're taking. But don't forget to take extreme ownership and accountability in whatever actions or situations you're in. Lastly, Ross emphasized that at the end of the day it's not about the money or wealth but it's all about the freedom that money can give, and the control you have with your destiny!
