The Business Method Podcast: High-Performance & Entrepreneurship
Listeners, today's episode is a masterclass in innovation, tech leadership, and entrepreneurship from someone who's seen it all. We're joined by Ross Buhrdorf, one of the foundational figures in the rise of the internet. As the founding CTO of HomeAway, Ross helped scale the company to a $3.9 billion acquisition by Expedia. But that's only part of the story. Before that, he was at the heart of one of the internet's earliest search engines—Excite.com—which at one point was bigger than Google. Now, Ross is back in the arena with his latest venture: ZenBusiness, a mission-driven company helping millions of entrepreneurs start and grow their own businesses with confidence and ease. In this conversation, we go deep on: What it was like building Excite.com in the early days of the web How HomeAway scaled into a global platform with billions in valuation The emotional and mental shifts after a billion-dollar exit Why Ross believes every human should have access to entrepreneurship How ZenBusiness is leveling the playing field for small business owners The tools Ross uses—like NLP and visualization—to set big goals What he looks for in a winning startup idea and founding team The most important leadership lessons he's learned across 3 decades How to build companies that align with your values, not just your wallet Whether you're a founder, a tech enthusiast, or someone dreaming of launching your own business, this episode is packed with powerful takeaways and firsthand wisdom from a true digital pioneer. LegalZoom makes various #1 claims, including that it is the “#1 choice for online small business formation,” that it is “#1 rated by small businesses,” and that is “voted #1 by small businesses.” ZenBusiness challenged these claims in the same case we wrote about yesterday. In some industries, companies can look to empirical third-party data (such as sales data) to support these types of claims. When that doesn't exist, companies are left to find their own support. NAD's decision show how tricky that can be. https://www.kelleydrye.com/viewpoints/blogs/ad-law-access/nad-decision-considers-1-claims Gonzalo Mon gmon@kelleydrye.com (202) 342-8576 www.kelleydrye.com/people/gonzalo-e-mon Hosted by Simone Roach Subscribe to the Ad Law Access blog - www.kelleydrye.com/subscribe Subscribe to the Ad Law News Newsletter - www.kelleydrye.com/subscribe View the Advertising and Privacy Law Resource Center - www.kelleydrye.com/advertising-and-privacy-law Find all of our links here linktr.ee/KelleyDryeAdLaw
LegalZoom has a box on its website with the title “As Seen In” followed by the logos of five publications that have featured its services. In an NAD challenge, ZenBusiness argued that because LegalZoom has an affiliate relationship with some of those publications, it needs to disclose its connections to them in order to comply with the FTC's Endorsement Guides. LegalZoom argued that mere press mentions don't qualify as endorsements and, therefore, that a disclosure isn't required. https://www.kelleydrye.com/viewpoints/blogs/ad-law-access/nad-decision-considers-as-seen-in-claims Gonzalo Mon gmon@kelleydrye.com (202) 342-8576 www.kelleydrye.com/people/gonzalo-e-mon Hosted by Simone Roach Subscribe to the Ad Law Access blog - www.kelleydrye.com/subscribe Subscribe to the Ad Law News Newsletter - www.kelleydrye.com/subscribe View the Advertising and Privacy Law Resource Center - www.kelleydrye.com/advertising-and-privacy-law Find all of our links here linktr.ee/KelleyDryeAdLaw

In today's rapidly evolving entrepreneurial landscape, technology is the great equalizer, opening new avenues for innovation and challenging traditional notions of business scalability. We sit down with Sameer Gulati, CPO at ZenBusiness, to explore how the company is empowering startups on their business journey. We examine the impact of recent innovations on the entrepreneurial environment and delve into the rapid shifts in competition and remote work.Episode HighlightsTechnology is having a transformative impact on the entrepreneurial landscape, enabling a new wave of business ventures through accessible tech stacks and digital tools like Generative AI.ZenBusiness positions itself as the K-12 level for early-stage businesses, offering specialized tools and services that guide startups through their formative years until they're ready for more specialized software. The rise of platforms like ZenBusiness raises questions about the changing dynamics of small business scalability and regional competition. The concept of a '1-button company' could revolutionize not just the startup phase but the entire lifecycle of running a business. In a compelling example of eating their own dog food, ZenBusiness encourages team members to launch side hustles, serving as a real-world testbed for the company's product offerings. Despite having a majority of their workforce based in Austin, ZenBusiness's commitment to a remote work culture is so strong that even local social gatherings are rare. What's Next Austin? “Austin has shown that as an ecosystem, as a talent pool, as a well-connected city with ambition, it certainly has the potential to be the place which creates not just the next set of unicorns but also decacorns. I'm optimistic about that. We believe that we can be one of those.” Sameer Gulati: LinkedIn, X/TwitterZenBusiness: Website, LinkedIn, X/Twitter Austin Next Links: Website, X/Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn

Hvordan du holder dig orienteret uden at blive opslugt at negative nyheder dagen lang. Ross Buhrdorf, the CEO of ZenBusiness, is leading the way for a new wave of entrepreneurs. ZenBusiness is on a mission to empower the next generation of entrepreneurs, small business owners, gig-economy workers, and freelancers to take charge of their lives and futures by ditching the corporate world and working for themselves. His company enables these intrepid folks to start, run, and grow a successful business. The amount of people that want to opt out of the traditional corporate rat race is staggering. Pre-pandemic ZenBusiness had roughly 30,000 customers—and the number recently exploded to 250,000. Buhrdorf, a long time tech executive, early in his career saw older workers get fired at the company he worked at. This caused an epiphany—if they laid off the experienced talent, what would happen to him ten or more years later? He decided that since it's risky to pursue the traditional corporate route, he might as well chart his own course and be in control of his destiny. Buhrdorf then rebooted his career as a successful entrepreneur. Buhrdorf is not alone. Americans are a relentless, maverick, rugged and determined bunch of people. While we like complaining and arguing with each other, Americans have this built-in sense of self-determination and grit. We refuse to give up in the face of disaster. Against all odds, we persevere and bravely forge forward, in pursuit of our dreams and goals.

Many people think of testing and optimization as selecting one tactic and then seeing if it has a positive or negative impact. But that's just validating ideas, and not the best way to maximize outcomes or profit. In fact, that approach has a less than 10% success rate in terms of winning experiments. According to Andrew Anderson, Head of Website Optimization Programs at ZenBusiness, the better way to experiment is to move from a validation mindset to a discovery and exploitation mindset. In this episode, Andrew explains what this tactic looks like and how it can be applied to websites, content, and growth. Andrew has been described as "The Most Passionate Optimizer in the World".He also touches on how and why he got into writing and blogging, and how he constructs articles which is completely different from the typical SEO model. It's a really fascinating discussion. His expertise lies in banking regulations and financial services, and he co-founded fintech Joust in 2017, which was acquired by ZenBusiness in 2020. “really learn yourself, understand your limitations and understand your strengths… I'm hesitant to tell people to trust your gut. The gut is so important and it's very important to know when to trust it. And so, the only now you would know when to trust it and when not to trust it is by truly, truly understanding who you are. And there are many different ways you can get there… Now what your limitations are. And sometimes they are very difficult to accept but nonetheless are there. As the 2020 pandemic continues to threaten America’s small businesses, it makes sense to talk with people who are saving them, by serving them through technology. My guests today do just that. They are Ross Buhrdorf, CEO & Founder of ZenBusiness, and his colleague Lamine Zarrad. Lamine, who is SVP of Financial Services, was a guest on Barefoot Innovation last year, when he was CEO of Joust. Joust was acquired by ZenBusiness earlier this year. In our conversation, Ross and Lamine explain that their target market is service businesses with zero to ten employees. They explain that, in order to thrive, these little enterprises need to digitize every aspect of their activity, from marketing to legal to finance. Reflecting a pattern that I’m seeing everywhere, ZenBusiness is seeing the demand for this digitization soaring in the pandemic, which is driving activity of all kinds into digital and online channels. I’ve been saying that, in finance and financial regulation, we’re seeing a decade of technology adoption and innovation squeezed into a few short months.

Starting a small company used to be simple. Get some space on Main Street, put out a shingle, and begin plying your trade. Then the regulatory state came, and so did the internet. Hello and welcome back to Equity, TechCrunch’s venture capital-focused podcast (now on Twitter!), where we unpack the numbers behind the headlines. This week wound being incredibly busy. What else would a week that included both the Airbnb and Affirm IPO filings, a host of mega-rounds for new unicorns, some fascinating smaller funding events, and some new funds? So we had a lot to get through, but with Chris and Danny and Natasha and your humble servant, we dove in headfirst:Affirm has filed to go public! The fintech unicorn is big, growing, and losing less money over time. We were pretty impressed in our first look. Then, with a bit more time, we dug deeper and found a weakness or two. Still, Affirm is heading public and not in poor shape.Airbnb filed, and we jumped into an Equity Shot as fast as we could on Tuesday to get our minds around the news. Since then, Danny dug through the venture capital winners circle -- a surprisingly small subset of firms! -- and we also got into some questions that I had about the company's finances.Robinhood is said to have an IPO in the books, so we talked a bit about what we know concerning its Q3 growth. And then there was edtech, as always. This week we talked about Tencent backing Udemy, Duolingo raising again, and Transfr picking up a Series A that we thought was super interesting.Danny wanted to talk about the Trust & Will Series A. We tried to not make that many jokes.ZenBusiness raised $55 million as well, in an outsized Series B.Financial Venture Studio put together a new fund to cut small checks into Seed-stage fintech startups. We think that's great. Especially given what we know about what is going on in the fintech venture world. And Natasha walked us through her latest deep-dive, a look into the world of virtual headquarters. This led to the worst joke of the show. What a week! Three episodes, some new records, and a very tired us after all the action. More on Monday!

But don't forget to take extreme ownership and accountability in whatever actions or situations you're in.
